It's impossible to use as a defense

No its a very good Run Defense..I use it aloy against those run heavy teams and gold back..It brings a extra linebacker to pursue the ball carrier

I'll wait for kia to explain the big details, but I find it successful with the right personal.
I've had some success with it on Pats squad, mainly it's personal and play calling. It's harder to play then the 4-3 (not so much pick up and play) but if used right it can be very useful because of it's variety.

I love the 3-4 defense. It's improved my pass defense a ton. And with so many different types of biltzes to choose from, you can confuse the hell out of your opponent.

I basically use the 3-4 exclusively nowadays. It's a really good formation if you can run it right. Having the extra linebacker to cover or blitz is a big help.

Well 1st thing you must edit the playbook. Cause none of 'em have all the necessary plays to run it effectively - IMO.

The 3-4 is not impossible at all. It Does take a great deal of trial and error though.
I use it on all of my teams, and have gotten pretty good at it (although i got smashed by BenRichardson in our last NSL scrimmage..oh well).
Here's my set up for my favorite one
DT-Art Donovan
OLB-Lamar Lathon
OLB- Robert Braizle
CB-Albert Lewis
CB-Terry Mcdaniel
FS- Nolan Cromwell
--now you are probably thinking "2 generic ILB's? I'll just run right up the middle.
Not against Art Donovan you wont. He's by far the best A GAP crushing DT in this game. He never gets tired, and his leadership bonus is great.
If you dont really want to spend a gold on a DT...then Jerome Brown, Fridge, Dan Salieamua are good options. Ive also tested the bigger 270+ plus DE's at that spot, and they do a good job as well..and get great penetration/pressure, because they right over the center and in front of QB.
The one thing you MUST do with the 3-4 is reposition the "Rush OLB".
He is lined up incorrectly. Back him up 2 steps, so that he actually lines up as a LB, and not a dang defensive end.
If you do not do this, he will be instantly engulfed in blocks every play. Put him where he is supposed to be, and he will make plays.

set your D-Line to "balance" or Run stop..whichever you prefer.
Back up Merriman 2 steps so he is even with the ILB on his side, control either Phillips or the ILb on his side, and you should get some results.
