The Overall rating does not mean anything and it never has. The problem with both Kobe and Labron is that they both have unstoppable dunk packages. Kobe lacks midrange but like so many other players he can bury facial threes too easily, especially in the clutch. Kobe is good for 2/3 three pointers in the last minute of every quarter. Quite ridiculous.

Personally, I don't really care what they're ratings are as long as Kobe has the highest overall in the game. Lebron's 3 point shooting needs to be turned way down in the game because he hits almost all of his 3's whenever I see somebody play w/ him and he's not even a good 3 point shooter. Kobe should be a 97 or 98 and Lebron about a 96 or 95.

Give me a break. MJ was great because he changed how the game could be played offensively, and later on defensively. By the time he retired for the first and second time, there was nothing left for him to pove except for the fact that he could come back near 40 years old and still dominate because of his greater understanding of the sport on both ends of the court. Championships and personal accolades can only take you so far. It's your achievements on and off the court that has no rewards to be reaped that prove you are the greatest. Take Muhammad Ali for example....

great post dude. mj did revolutionize the nba as we know it. (for good and bad) he proved that one man could carry a team. (as good as he was) but the bad part is everyone wants to be like mike now. so we have iversons, kobes, lebrons, arenas', and other players that try to do what mike did. the closest we have gotten is kobe (and to a certain extent on the offensive end iverson in his prime) but lebron has a while to go and a lot to learn if he wants to be as good as mj.

I don't agree with lowering players to mid to low 90's because someone don't think they should be rated 98/99. Look at both of there stats and us the rating system to adjust a players ratings;

The only thing in Lebrons ratings that are high is his jumper - lower his mid to 85 & 3's to 75. Then you should raise his defense awareness, & blks because he improved on those.

Kobe improved his rebbounding and assist this year while improving his off & def awareness.

You can't just say a player should be a certain rating just adjust there previous rating and see what they come out with.

LB23 should be a 97/98 & KB24 is a 98/99 IMB.

How often do you see lebron making a bad pass....All superstar NBA players cry about fouls ALL OF THEM INCLUDING JORDAN.

Very, very seldom the boy is accurate as heck with his passes. And crying about fouls isn't the problem. It's trying to draw fouls and not finsh is the problem. You will almost never see Lebron flail his arms heading to the basket, becuse when he gets fouled he is always trying to finish.

And the general consensus around the league is that Kobe Bryant is currently the best player in the NBA. As Penny said, who better than to judge a player than the players who play against them night in and night out. Kobe's peers have gone on record as saying he's hands down the best current player in the league. LeBron himself said that some of the things Kobe is doing "incredible", and that he's the best the NBA has.

I also see Kobe with three rings and an MVP trophy, and that is another fact.

Da Roc, nobody has ever averaged more than 6 assists in the triangle offense. Kobe's 5.5 apg lead the team and are right where they should be given his role in the offense. I know you hate these "what if" scenarios, but it's simple logic. LeBron handles the ball like a point guard in the Cleveland offense. Kobe does not handle the ball so much in the triangle. I'm not taking anything away from LeBron, but just know that with his skill it's a given that he would have a higher assist average than a player who didn't handle the ball nearly as much. If most of Kobe's passes lead to shot attempts, he'd average 7 assists as well.

I know LeBron averages 30, 7, and 7. That's the way it is. But you can't call LeBron better than Kobe based entirely on stats because they have vastly different roles, and the stats reflect that.

Triple Ocho you make a couple of great points. LeBron is a great fourth quarter scorer, there's no denying that. HOWEVER.. he also had many more opportunities to score in the fourth quarter than Kobe did, simply because the Cavs played in more close games. Kobe doesn't have to score in the fourth quarter when his team is already up by 10-15 points and he's able to rest.

Kobe has always been passing throughout his career, he's averaged similar assist numbers through the years. To say he "just now" started passing is ridiculously laughable as he's passed just as well now as he did back when he had Shaq.

Did you watch the Finals? Yes the Lakers are a "way better" team than the Cavs on paper, but most of the team failed to show up against Boston which left Kobe little to work with. For sure, Kobe deserves a portion of the blame for the loss to the Celtics, but it was a team effort and thus everyone who played for the Lakers deserves some blame.

LeBron didn't play much better than Kobe against Boston. A 2-18 shooting performance was what "King James" opened with, followed by similar 5-22 and 6-24 efforts. The biggest reason why the Cavs survived Boston for six games was because of their team DEFENSE, something that the Lakers showed little of in the Finals. Cleveland won a couple of their games by simply grinding out ugly victories, even though LeBron James would be struggling mightily. With their only offensive weapon being harassed by Boston, they had to fall back on their defense, and it was enough for them to win a couple of games.

Also, Ray Allen was in a continued shooting slump, something he broke out of in the Finals and played spectacularly. The Finals Celtics were a much different team than the one that played Atlanta and Cleveland.

God damnit. I'll say it again, LeBron's TEAM took the Celtics to 7 games, NOT LEBRON! LeBron was absolutely horrific for the better portion of the series! Kobe's TEAM lost to the Celtics in the Finals, NOT KOBE! It's a team sport for God's sake!

LeBron tries to be a "world icon" and "billionaire athlete". Kobe tries to win championships. He won them with Shaq because he molded his game to complement Shaq yet he is crucified for it. Guess what? Kobe lead a YOUNG team through the incredibly tough Western Conference and to the NBA Finals. There's no way that happens if Kobe isn't a leader. He teared up in an interview after he won the award, speaking about how proud he was of his teammates and how much they've grown. You're right, he's a horrific leader, no leadership qualities at all. Shaq is the most selfish, lazy, unmotivated athlete I've seen. His rapping skills are horrible as well. He's thrown every teammate, coach, GM and star wing that he's ever played for under the bus as he's left the team. A good example is him taking time to heal during the season rather than off season, and him demanding huge amounts of money. He's gone on record as calling himself the MDE as well. Fact is, there's no way Shaq has four rings without Kobe or Wade, as they put in work.

LeBron's team winning over Kobe's in two meaningless regular season games gives no indication that LeBron is better than Kobe, merely that his team won on those two meaningless meetings.

And FYI, neither of those so called "top 10" players played as such in the Finals. Both Gasol and Odom shrunk for the most part, especially in game 6. This was probably a combination of nerves and the Celtics shutting them down, but they didn't play like they had during the season at all. Is it Kobe's fault that his 2nd and 3rd options vanish during the Finals?

The thing is, the Celtics were hungry. Their top three stars could taste the championship ring they had never had, and simply wanted it more. Paul Pierce equaled the production of Kobe, and then Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen flat outplayed Odom and Gasol. Gasol and Odom were both severely limited against Boston's physical front line, which lead to a major drop in their production.

So sure, on paper it should have evened out. If the Lakers really had a top 10 SF and top 5 PF I don't know where they were, because they certainly weren't playing during the NBA Finals. Man, and you act as if a player's "prime" is some magical attribute that raises their level of play ten fold. Well, it's not. A player's PHYSICAL prime is around 28, but that doesn't mean their game can't mature much earlier. LeBron may not get a whole lot better, he may plateau where he's at right now. I'm not saying that's anything to scoff at, simply that he may average 30, 7, and 8 for the rest of his career. Think about it, he doesn't have a consistent jumper 5 years into the league.

Thanks biggmone, I love the quote by Rivers and I think it's absolutely correct. And you're right about Kobe's driving ability, it is definately up there with James'. Kobe can definately drive just as well as LeBron, but LeBron can FINISH slightly better. His bigger body can take harder hits than Kobe and maintain control in the air, using his soft touch to finish more plays around the rim.

So true tripleocho, a bigger role will yield bigger stats. If you're the playmaker, scorer, leader, facilitator, you're going to have better stats than somebody of a lesser role. It doesn't necessarily have to do with better skill, although LeBron is oozing with it. Kobe can do the same things as LeBron, yet the structure of the Lakers does not call for it.

Yes, Kobe for sure deserved MVP this season. His team was riddled with injuries yet they finished with the #1 seed in the ultra-competitive Western Conference. Chris Paul's team was healthy all season and loaded with proven All Star talent. LeBron had a for MVP if he could have played through his weak hand injury, or carried the Cavs to a better record. He couldn't do either, and thus the MVP went to the right player.

And do you honestly believe this season was Kobe's best shot at an MVP trophy? The Lakers look like contenders for the next 5-6 years assuming everyone stays together and healthy, and Kobe will be the center piece of that contender. I don't expect his talent level to drop off, so I see similar MVP-esque seasons out of him.
