Since I am bored at work, I figured I would start another thread to keep the discussion going. This has probably been asked before, but since I don't see it in the general boxing discussion board, I'm going to start it.
What is the greatest fight you have ever seen and why? This doesn't have to be just boxing, as some have possibly seen MMA fights that they thought were the best.
The greatest fight I have ever seen, bar none, is Corrales vs. Castillo. I have never seen a fight that was so intense from the opening bell to the end of the fight. They were throwing bombs at each other from the word go, and it made me actually fear for their safety. I kept saying "No one can keep taking these shots. Someone is going to get seriously injured." To top it off, what an ending. Castillo knocks Corrales down twice, Corrales gets up and stops Castillo. Unbelievable. Makes me miss Corrales. May he rest in peace.

I'd have to say Tyson vs Douglas. That was the first fight I ever watched, and I was absolutely in awe. Soon after that I watched a Jones Jr fight and became a huge fan of the sport, instantly. To this day I pick boxing over any other sport. If a good fight was on at the same time as the superbowl, I would watch the fight instead.

I'm the same way. Boxing is my number 1 sport, MMA number 2, and then probably a tie between baseball and football. Both very good fights. Chavez-Taylor was great other than Richard Steele waving it off at the end. I felt so bad for Taylor after that fight and if you all have seen the Legendary Nights documentary on HBO about the fight, they show Taylor now and it's depressing. That being said, Chavez solidified his greatness with that and is still, in my opinion, the greatest mexican fighter of all time.
Tyson-Douglas is the one fight that I wish I could go back in time, knowing what I do now, and put money on Douglas. What was he, like a 42-1 underdog? What was impressive was that Douglas seemed to neutralize everything Tyson wanted to do. It was shocking. I thought when Tyson knocked him down that it was over, but Douglas got up and knocked Tyson out. Great fight. It's just too bad that Douglas never amounted to much after that fight and subsequently got knocked out by Holyfield.
Anyway, good stuff. Keep 'em coming.

Douglas is the perfect example of a guy who puts everything into one big fight. He fought a close to perfect fight against Tyson. No onr saw it comin(hints the 42-1 odds). Then in his very 1st title defense was ko'd by Holyfield in one round. Either lost his focus, or Holyfield was just that good. I think it was a little of both.

Another poster already said Tyson vs. Douglas, so I will go with Bowe vs. Holyfield I.

No Superstars or what have you but the Michael Katsidis v Graham Earl fight sticks in my mind. Earl down twice, his corner throw in the towel and the referee threw it back out and continued the fight. Earl then battled back and won.

Is this a misprint? Katsidis has only lost once, and that was to Casamayor.

I must be thinking of another guy, not Katsidis. It was in 2006.

Yeah, Katsidis was undefeated until Cassamayor. That was a winnable fight for him too. He just got careless, winging wild haymakers and got caught. Good fight though. An earlier poster mentioned Pryor vs. Aguello 1. Great, great fight between 2 world class guys. Those are the types of fights that I love. Fights between 2 amazing fighters at the top of their game going at it in a closely contested fight, such as Leonard vs. Hearns (one of my favorites). That's why Trinidad vs. De La Hoya was so dissapointing. I was looking forward to that fight for 2 years and when it was finally announced, I couldn't wait. 2 undefeated stars in their prime going at it. But the fight didn't have that excitement and drama that I wanted from it, as the only drama came from the fact that De La Hoya decided to just move and barely punch in the last few rounds and Trinidad won a surprise decision. It was unfortunate.

Oh man.....I can't believe I forgot Hagler Hearns. FOTY for 2006 with Monishiphur (horrible spelling) vs sitchawalitch (horrible spelling again, Thai names are so hard to spell) was incredible too.

Any fight where both fighters felt like they were going to die afterwards has to be included in the list. Ali - Frazier 3 was an unbelievable fight and a incredible show of courage and heart from both men. There wasn't a winner or loser in that fight. It was basically a survivor.

That fight has been my signature for a while now, and I agree. I was thinking the same thing. These two hammered each other from beginning to end, and it kind of remided me of the fights between Dela Hoya and Mosley some more of my favourites...

Greatest fight I've seen would probably be Benn v Mclellan, Benn down numerous times, comes back to finish Mclellan late on. Sadly of course Mclellan suffered brain injuries but it doesn't take away from the amazing fight and fantastic performance from Benn.

Benn vs. McClellan was a great fight, but what happened to McClellan afterwards was disturbing. But when you look up pure action fight, Benn vs. McClellan should be one of the first fights you see. I just wish it ended differently for McClellan because he was a extremely talented fighter.

What is the greatest fight you have ever seen and why?
Troy Dorsey v. Greg Haugen bloodbaths from the early 80s.
Hagler v. Hearns. Nuff said.
Hagler v. Leonard -- I'm a huge fan of both, but was pulling for Sugar that day/night, and it was an awesome fight.
Tyson v. Douglas -- Not so much a great fight, just everyone was stunned that someone was standing up to the bully. Douglas pretty much had his way with Tyson and showed everyone what happens when a bigger man stands up to Tyson. Tony Tucker and Mitch "Blood" Green illustrated this to some degree early in Tyson's career. Once the blueprint was drawn, Holyfield and Lewis followed. Some think Bowe would have done this to Tyson had he been given the chance. Douglas was very talented, but poorly motivated and disciplined. He trained properly, was motivated by his mother's death, and put it together ... for one night. He resumed his "Duster Muglas" character soon after.
Gatti-Ward -- I forget which one it was (2?), when Gatti hurt his hand and was taking punishment for a few rounds while he could punch with it. Then he starting throwing bombs with it, wincing every time. I remember coming off the couch and standing and yelling for him.
Bowe v. Holyfield -- When Holyfield was rocked and out on his feet early in the round, the "Warrior" was created when he came back with some big punches and had Bowe hurt later in the round. That is when Holyfield showed everyone what type of fighter he was/is.
Vargas v. Trinidad - I hate (but respect Tito), and I thought I wasted $50 on this PPV when Vargas was floored twice in round 1. But young Vargas battled back, eventually knocked Tito down, before Tito overwhelmed him for a KO win. Great fight.
Ali v. Frazier I -- I've always like Joe better than Ali, and sorta hold a grudge on Ali for how he treated Joe in public despite Joe giving Ali money to train, helping hoim get his license back, etc. I was glad to see Joe get the best of Ali in one of the best fights of all time.
Morrison v. Mercer -- One of the most brutal knockouts ever.
Breland v. Davis -- Mark Breland was rising to stardom following the Olympics and was winning the fight until a cartoonish, yet devestating overhand right by Aron davis connected to Breland's temple and ended the fight in dramatic fashion. Breland never recovered from the loss.
Taylor v. Chavez -- Taylor left the ring with a loss, internal bleeding, and devestation he never recovered from. The fight was stunning as it was entertaining. Given how it has turned out for Meldrick, I like most people, just wished h could have walked away with a win, at least then he'd have *something*.
Mosley v. Forrest -- I'm not a big Mosley fan and to see Forrest connect and stagger Mosley a few times while being deficient in comparable skills was refreshing to see that styles and anticipation skill still matter.
Leonard v. Hearns I -- As a big Sugar Ray fan, this fight was awesome. Losing big on the cards, Leonard pulls out a 13th (If I remember right) rd knockout. I'm soon to be 35, and as a youngster I was big fan of the middleweight division in the 80s and the free fights on ABC's Wide World of Sports.

Emarrassingly, I did not see that fight. I usually go with my father-in-law to a Mexican bar to watch the PPV fights (La Gente get a little rowdy). One of the guys I usually sit by videotaped the replay (HBO or Sowtime) for me ... on VHS. I can't find a VCR. *grin* (At this point, it's slipped my mind).
I'll watch it on YouTube to night. I watched Taylor-Chavez the other day. The expression on Taylor's face once he realized the fight was stopped is just crushing to witness.

In no particular order:
Corrales vs. Castillo I: Ten rounds of all out action
Hagler vs. Hearns: The best three round stretch in modern boxing history
Foreman vs. Lyle: it was before I was born, but the OP doesn't say anything about non-live fights not counting... just two sluggers going at it
Dodie Boy Peņalosa vs. Hi Shup Sin: Not really an all-time great fight, but it was awesome seeing Dodie Boy (Gerry Peņalosa's older brother, who had an atrophied leg due to contracting polio as a child) win the flyweight title via KO. Peņalosa would have qualified as an athlete for the Paralympics because of his disability but instead spent a career whaling on what were technically more "able-bodied" opponents, and winning a couple of world titles in the process.
Ali vs. Frazier III: The Thrilla in Manila. 'Nuff said.
Pacquiao vs. Barrera I: Great storyline involving a young and hungry up-and-comer going up against one fo the long-time best in the division. And the action lived up to the build-up.
Ward vs. Gatti I: A slugger fan's delight.
Trinidad vs. Vargas: Right up there with Coralles vs. Castillo I as one of the most action-packed fights in recent history.
Morales vs. Barrera I: Any of their three fights could make my top ten, I just went with the first one.
Douglas vs. Tyson: Not that great of a boxing match, but at the time, Tyson was plain unbeatable in my then-11-year old brain. In terms of the world's reaction to the outcome, there can't have been a bigger upset.

Hagler vs. Hearns: It only went 3 rounds, but it was the most action packed and brutal 3 rounds you'll ever see in a boxing match.
Ali-Frazier 3: One of the best fights in history, with Ali scoring a 14th round TKO and saying afterwards that "it was the closest thing to death." Great fight.
Morales-Barrera 1: Non-stop toe to toe action from the opening bell and these guys literally didn't let up for 12 rounds. The start of a great trilogy between these two Mexican legends.
Corrales-Castillo 1: The greatest Lightweight fight in history IMO, and maybe the best fight ever. Unbelievable action all the way thru and how either guy finished the fight without being seriously, seriously hurt or killed is beyond me.
Gatti-Ward 1- Two all action fighters that gave their all and battered each other for 12 rouinds. They went on to fight another great trilogy.
Foreman-Lyle: This was a Heavyweight slugfest between two murderous punchers with both men hitting the canvas multiple times. Both men showed tremendous heart to keep getting up from the other man's bombs. A wild war!
These are just a few of my all time favorites!
