I'm hoping it's simply because I'm so early in career mode, but the second thing you have to do is some Croatian tournament, and you have to beat the "challenge" to move forward, if I fail I have to repeat the tournament, really don't consider this a career mode type of gameplay, I'm desperately hoping it's simply because I'm so early in my career, I liked it in TS2 that each month there's different events that you can or can't enter and if you fail you just move on to the next month.......

Answered the question myself by playing further into the career, no it's not linear once you get past the first couple of "hurdles" it opens up into a proper calendar mode :)

Hi Placebo. So what is the calendar like? Roughly how many tournaments a year and do you get a decent range of opponents?

Well I'm on the junior tour and there's 24 tournaments in he year, each month you can choose between a hard tournament or an easy tournament, obviously it's a risk/reward thing, win the hard one and you get more XP points to improve your player and more unlock points to go shopping with.....
