You all seem to have different ideas about how the Wii is being marketed, and who it is being marketed to.
Well, I found a couple of articles which are stunning in their scope and explain perfectly what's happening with Wii in the marketplace, and everyone at 2K should read these, especially product managers. I'm posting it here in the wake of the discussion here about whether or not 2K should bother with a Wii version of NHL 2K9. I think these articles explain perfectly why 2K's decision to make a Wii version is right on the money.
Here is the link. I'm referring to the top 2 articles, "Birdmen and the Casual Fallacy", and "Disruption Storm".
http://malstrom.50webs.com/disruptionchronicles.htm
Here is a summary of each:
The first article, "Birdmen and the Casual Fallacy", describes the widespread misinterpretation of the reasons behind the success of the Wii, how it has led to an avalanche of so-called "casual games", why that is wrong, and the ultimate fate of Nintendo, Microsoft, and Sony. It draw heavily from the market events that occurred after the release of the Nintendo DS and other examples of "market disruption" and the "blue ocean strategy".
The second article, "Disruption Storm", goes into great details about so-called "disruptive technologies", their history, how they affect markets, what roles Nintendo, Microsoft, and Sony play in the current videogame market, and why this occurs. It also distinguishes between disruptive technologies and sustaining technologies.
I'm sure many of you will label this guy a Wii fanboy, but if you read it with an open mind, it's incredibly difficult to refuse his arguments.
