The Miami Heat had a terrible 08 season with only 15 wins. They traded away their Hall of Fame center (Shaquille O'Neal) who was obviously on the decline physically for a younger more versatile player who's contract could possibly expire after the seasons end (Shawn Marion).
The Miami Heat's management has had a lot of pressure to turn their franchise around and get back to the promise land. They needed to get started quickly.

The Celtics win it all. Despite a horrific 06-07 season, Boston's big three came together and finished an incredible season by defeating the Lakers in 6 games in the NBA Finals, crowning themselves champions of the basketball world. With the green powerhouse in the East the heat know it will be extremely challenging to rebuild over a 3 month offseason and beat the defending champs.

First move; trade away unnecessary contracts for expiring ones. The only remaining players on the roster at the start of the off-season were Dwayne Wade and Shawn Marion (Marion did excercise his player option on this upcoming season, and the Heat were happy to see him returning alongside a healthy D. Wade). Therefore the Heat went into one of the best free agency periods in decades with about $42 M.

The free agency market was huge. Deron Williams, Lou Deng, Monta Ellis, Elton Brand, and many other big time players were atop the list. The Heats' top priorities were a PF and PG. They offered Deron Williams and Elton Brand a contract that matched their individual aspirations. Elton Brand accepted, while D. Will wound up in Portland. Miami was not completely satisfied with the outcome of the free agency period, but they felt their team took a huge step toward success by obtaining a player like Brand. Three other signees that will be a large part of the team as role players coming off the bench were Jalen Rose, Daniel Gibson and Eddie House.

Next was the draft. The Heat had the 5th overall pick. Eventhough they filled a gap at the power forward position Miami felt it was necessary to grab a center who could be around for years to come. With that said they drafted Georgetown's center Roy Hibbert. In the second round they decided to get their point guard. They are assuming that he will be the starting point guard on the team next year (unless an upgrade arises mid-season). With the 53rd pick in the draft, the Miami Heat selected Sean Singletary from Virginia. The New Look Heat seemed to be ready for the start of the season.

Filling out the roster after the draft the Heat signed Maurice Taylor, Wayne Simien, Anthony Carter, and David Harrison to minimum salaries. Now they're ready!
