I've been (finally!) having some pretty consistent success with my current squad, and was considering trying to make some improvements. The improvements may wind up being somewhat into the cheese category though....
Anyway, the squad looks like this right now:
Gold:
Willie Wood (FS)
Dave Wilcox (OLB)
Silver:
Deron Cherry (FS)
**** Anderson (SS)
Joey Browner (SS)
Bronze:
Scott Studwell (ILB)
Dexter Manley (DE)
Dave Butz (DT)
Jim Harbaugh (QB)
Rob Moore (WR)
Christian Okoye (HB)
What I'm considering changing is shifting to some 2-way players. The first change would be to drop Willie Wood and Jim Harbaugh - then pick up Sammie Baugh to fill both of those positions, leaving me with a free Bronze. Pick up Alvin Harper. The next change would be to drop Dave Wilcox and **** Anderson, then pick up Chuck Bendarik and Ronnie Lott. Bednarik would then be subbed in at Center on offense. That would leave my team looking like this:
Offense:
Sammie Baugh (QB)
Rob Moore (WR)
Alvin Harper (WR)
Christian Okoye (HB)
Chuck Bednarik (C)
Defense:
Sammie Baugh (FS)
Deron Cherry (FS)
Ronnie Lott (SS)
Joey Browner (SS)
Scott Studwell (ILB)
Chuck Bednarik (OLB)
Dexter Manley (DE)
Dave Butz (DT)
Special Teams:
Sammie Baugh (K/P)
Joey Browner (Gunner)
Deron Cherry (Gunner)
What do you guys think? I'd considered going with Steve Tasker instead of Alvin Harper just to get another Special Teams Demon out there. :)

i dont know about putting chuck at center, everything else is cool. if u comes across a running style team chuck would be really fatigue at center and might allow a DT to get easily through to Sammy
however since everybody likes to pass on 2k8 this shouldnt be a real problem so GO FOR IT but i just see it bieng a concern toward running teams

Hmm. Really? I went with Bednarik before, and never had much trouble with Bednarik at Center. If he gets too fatigued, I can always sub the generic Center back in, right?
I've not tried Baugh out at FS before, but I figured I have Cherry and Lott there to bail him out if things get ugly. If he performs even slightly better than a generic, then I call that a success.

well yeah but mostly while i play i have had times where i forget to sub out my legends when they are too tired to perform

Wait, why 4 safeties?

I used chuck at center numerous times and he does tire out, so don't worry. FYI...He played more MLB than OLB during his career. It wasn't until late in his career that he moved to the outside.

Quick question....so why is it alright to sub FS/SS for corners, but not a TE for WR?

This team is extremely un-balanced, you do not have the offensive firepower to defeat most gamers.

Cant stand Alvin Harper. Cliff Branch is way more reliable.
Ive been thinking of trying Lou Groza along the O-line since he is my kicker on most of my teams. Id like to here how baugh and Bednarick do. I have Otto Graham on a team, that guy is a beast of a QB, and I know he played some Safety as well..Im curious to see how he does there also.

That's easy - it's not. I don't sub FS/SS for corners. I use 4 safeties, all playing safety.

Irony. ur doin' it right.
Wow. Me build a defensively stacked team? I wonder what kind of player would drive me to do that???
The second half of that statement is what gets me - I've played with AND WON, using just Jim Harbaugh and Christian Okoye on offense. I recently splurged and picked up a bronze WR. You're going to tell me that a QB, 2 WR, 1 HB, and 1 C is not enough firepower? That....that's just delusional. That's more than enough firepower to win. Heck, I'd be downright spoiled to have receivers that get open so quickly. I've been playing with generic WR's for so long - I forget what it's like for a receiver to catch a ball in tight coverage. You can ask several players around here - I make generic receivers look GOOD. :)
So anyhoo - a Gold QB, 2 Bronze WR's....I'll be able to pass *just fine* thank you very much. Okoye in my backfield as he has been for months. I'm just stunned by the mentality that this isn't enough firepower. It's plenty - so long as you're not calling fade routes and deep outs every other down. :P

Perhaps, but I have Rob Moore for reliability. I was looking at Alvin Harper to add the sizzle - downfield threat, since I'd have a Gold QB that can fully take advatage of that. The other option was to pick up Steve Tasker, adding a second set of reasonable hands, and adding a bit more "oomph" to my Special Teams - which is already pretty special. ;)

I'm a firm believer in a balanced team. For better or worse, we have been scoring teams this way at www.2kfootballstrategy.com.
Team Balance Scoring
Gold = 3 points (for a total of 6 points)
Silver = 2 points (for a total of 6 points)
Bronze = 1 point (for a total of 6 points)
So all in all, there are 18 points available for a team.
Your first team scores the following:
Defense: 13 points
Offense: 3 points
Wow... heavy D.
Here's one of my Cowboys team from the NSL League:
Gold: WR - Terrell Owens (Bump Buster, Break Away Burst, Quick Feet, Strength Bonus, Tough in the Middle)
Gold: CB - Terence Newman (Coverage Bonus, Quick Feet, Ball Hawk, Leadership Bonus, Speed Burner)
Silver: QB - Tony Romo (Scrambler, Rocket Arm)
Silver: TE - Jason Witten (Possession Receiver, Tough Over the Middle)
Silver: OLB - DeMarcus Ware (Pass Rush Bonus, Quick Feet)
Bronze: WR - Patrick Crayton (Possession Receiver)
Bronze: HB - Marion Barber (Strength Bonus)
Bronze: ILB - Bradie James (Run Coverage)
Bronze: SS - Roy Williams (Footsteps)
Bronze: FS - Ken Hamlin (Ball Hawk)
Bronze: CB - Anthony Henry (Ball Hawk)
It scores the following:
Defense: 9 points
Offense: 9 points
Making it a balanced team.

True, thats the only way id even consider alvin harper..if i had leadership on the field, which you do.
Tasker aint that bad. He gets the dropsies from time to time, but he is okay on the intermediate stuff.

Do you know anything about Sammy Baugh or Chuck Bednarick Zeus?
Look them up before you give me grief about that.
Secondly, you scored my first team, but what about my second?
Defense: 15
Offense: 8
Still defensively stacked, but by your system it's much closer on offense than before.

Numbski, just out of curiosity, with the mutiple guys you have on special teams, why do you kick off and punt so short? I would think you'd get excellent kick and punt coverage and make people go the long field against your defense as much as possible.

Kickoffs I directionally kick vs a return specialist. I get burned too much if I don't. I gave up on trying to get better coverage a long time ago. Punts - I'm punting as far as I can. I don't know why people don't believe me. I just don't have a star punter.
Side note - I just configured this team, and I was disappointed on a few fronts:
1. Since the game didn't recognize that I had 2 strong safeties (Ronnie Lott is really a FS), I lost Joey Browner on special teams.
2. I couldn't set Sammy Baugh as my punter. The only way I can think to do it would be to make him second on the depth chart, and manually sub him in at QB (which would be a PAIN!)
3. It wouldn't allow me to assign Steve Tasker to special teams - again, I'd probably have to make him 3rd or deeper on the depth chart to allow it.
4. Sammy's coverage skills seem to be okay - but he is pretty slow. No closing speed to speak of. If you've ever been picked off, and then tried to chase down the defender using your QB, you know what I'm talking about. It's bad. The few times the ball came his way he did alright though.
5. Bednarik is *very* spotty at center. Sometimes he's lights out, sometimes you'd think he was a generic.
So far as counting points, I think I'd take out-of-positions like this at half-points. Sammy is definitely NOT a gold-class Safety, and Chuck - perhaps I'd class him as a Bronze Center.
So points would look more like this:
Defense: 12.5
Offense: 8
Again, still not too shabby, but it isn't like I'm getting a ton of extra players here.
