View Full Version : Why is my kicking so bad

I miss literally 90-95% of my kicks. It appears to me that I am aiming them straight. I was 85-90% in 2K5 so I know how to aim kicks. But they always hook. I have tried about everything I can think of (I use a generic kicker), but even kicking from the 10 yard line unles I drop the arrow way low and kick a line drive they always seem to hook. The wind baffles me as well. Sometimes in the same game where there is 3-5 mph wind to the left I will adjust for it and the ball goes straight where I kick it without being affected by the wind at all. Later in the game I kick it straight and the wind hooks it dramatically. I feel like the game is screwing with me. But seriously, this is not a whining thread. I am looking for pointers for people who kick pretty well. I am a pretty good player in every other aspect of the game so it is hard for me to explain to people why I go for it on 4th from the 20, but really the chance of me hitting that FG is less than 10%.

I hook the ball everytime, but I adjust my kicks for the hook. Everytime I kick the ball it goes from left to right when I have a generic kicker. I just over compinsate and I make most of'em. I never adjust the up/down arrow and am pretty much money from 50 yards in.

I hate when you change your line up, your generics change too. When I get a new kicker, it's harder to make the kick because their tendencies.
I played Trekie the other day and I whiffed on the stick as I was kicking. Thumb slipped off, and the ball was just short. I scored two late TD's which, if I had the FG, likely would have sent the game to overtime.
I am erratic with the kicking game. Sometimes nail long ones, other times miss from the five, lol.

Are you using a left-footed kicker?
I'm usually automatic form 45 and in with a righty, but with a left one, I'm usually 60% on XPs

This could be because your are a lefty or a righty. Say if you are a righty when you push up on the stick you tend to move the stick to the right instead of striaght up and if your a lefty you move it to the left. So if you always hook your kicks to the right you should just move the arrow to the left more or just go to practice mode and practice moving the stick up. I dont really think you have to move the stick up 200mph either its just a timing thing.

Make sure your not using a controller that has the little rubber ring missing. I ripped mine off the grey rubber around the controller. Afterward i lost 8 leagues games to kicking. It was a combo of my kicker nate conway and that rubber piece being off. I also think that they did make it a little harder to kick with wind or something. My FG % is up. I get accurate kickers now.

i found that kicking is easy if you can consistently aim it to the right or left. i swing my stick slightly to the right on purpose and aim the arrow to the left. i rarely miss a kick anymore. it's definitely a wate of a good star player to have a star kicker.

Bronze kicker :)
In all seriousness, I got sick and tired of having a millimeter nudge of an arrow send a kick sailing wide 6 feet. My blood pressure is thankful for the change, and my offense is just fine.
It feels great to have a guy like Ray Guy who can bang it in from 45-50 yards, and also make your opponent go long field with his booming punts.

Im automatic with 50 yards with a generic kicker. I nailed a 53-54 yarder before with a generic in a dome.

Hey Tpat, what's up with your buddy PigskinPlanet. I sent him a FR after a game a few months back, he never responded. Does the guy still play?

you know what you move the arrow around too much, I never move it up or down only left or right. I noticed it in our game last night, you were moving it around i thought you were doing it to throw me off thinking ill try to block it lol.
But yeah just aim for the end left right and not up down.

I use a generic kicker
tpat,
after several games kicking with generics with crooked foots, a bronze kicker is a must for me... you also get the benefit of your opponent starting at the 20 often. if you must have a generic, i would go to practice mode and kick a bunch. practice mode will move the spot around which is nice!

generics are perfectly fine you can hit fgs perfeclty from the 35 yard line, i really believe a bronze kicker is a horrible waste.
and to GT
Im on at random times cant really tell you, but most likely late nights pacific around 7 to 12am if im not out playing basketball.

I don't think pigskin planet plays anymore. He was a big fan of 2K5 but never got on board with 2K8.

I have been having a horrible time kicking lately, but it's just an off spell.
Just pull the stick back smooth and straight, then learn the timing on when to nail it forward. Hold it forward to the follow through. Do not wobble at any point in the kick. You need to have steady hands. I tried today to wobble ever so slightly left and then right when I was holding it back and my kicker was running at the ball, and it went out of bounds at the 38 heh.
Generic kickers get the job done for me. I can see the advantage of a bronze kicker, though. More room for error, and you can hit it into the endzone everytime. If you hit it into the endzone your opponent has to have some balls to try and run it out, even with a legend returner.

Depends on the generic too. Epstein couldn't make a 25 yard FG with 100 MPH wind at his back.

Here are some tips that have helped me. Not 100%.
- First thing is getting the timing down to get the distance in your kicks.
--- The game will play with your timing no matter how you pull the stick back. I heard once that how you pull back on the stick... and I went in an screwed up every pull back and had no more problems then the so-called smooth pull backs.
- The push on the joystick will of course effect power and aim. But like I said work on the power just to get the distance. Kick from 20-25 yd line rather than 30+ for the big kicks.
- Get your aim down next. And not just straight. See how going left/right will effect your kick and by how much.
- Finally a key that many may not realize is when you kick most of the time it is at a angle.
Unless you go old school and run the ball to try and dictate the placement of the ball when hiked.
