The 2007 Warriors, led by record-setting senior quarterback Colt Brennan, carried a school-record 13-game winning streak, dating back to the end of the 2006 season, into the 2008 Sugar Bowl. The 2007 season would have been the first undefeated season in school history had they not been finally defeated in the Sugar Bowl. The Warriors claimed their third-ever WAC championship in 2007 with a victory over defending conference champion Boise State. The championship was the school's first ever outright conference championship in football. Brennan went on to set more career records in the FBS, and the Warriors became the third team outside the BCS conferences and second from the WAC to receive an invitation to play in the Bowl Championship Series.

June Jones, frustrated with what he viewed as a lack of support from the University, opted to leave Hawaii at the end of the 2007 season. After initial reports had him interviewing at SMU, Hawaii officials had offers to raise his salary from $800,000 a year to $1.7 million a year and offered a commitment to improve its facilities; in addition there was an outpouring of support from Hawaii fans, including Gov. Linda Lingle. However, Jones contacted Hawaii on January 7, 2008 and let them know he had decided to accept an offer from SMU. Jones said the work that needed to be done to improve the football facilities and the campus in general would never get done with him still there. He said after all of the broken promises, leaving was the only way to send a message. Jones went 75-41 at Hawaii, including 4-2 in bowls. His teams finished first in the WAC twice and second two other times.

On January 15th, 2008, McMackin took over the position of head coach for the Hawaiʻi Warriors. Upon signing his 5-year contract, McMackin will become the highest-paid state employee with a $1.1 million annual salary. The previous record was held by his predecessor June Jones, with a $800,016 annual salary.

2008 SEASON PREVIEW

2008 marks the beginning of a new era in Hawaii football. June Jones spearheaded a major turnaround at Hawaii from 1999-2007, turning a team that was 0-12 in 1998 into a consistent winner, but after the Sugar Bowl run, Jones left to take on another rebuilding job at SMU. Hawaii decided to promote within the program, as former defensive coordinator Greg McMackin is now the man in charge.

McMackin, who returned to Hawaii as defensive coordinator last season after a previous stint in the same position in Jones’ first season in 1999, has had a lot of experience as a defensive coordinator in the collegiate ranks and in the NFL, and he was also the head coach at Oregon Tech from 1986-90. There are more familiar faces on the ‘new’ coaching staff, as Ron Lee, who spent the last nine seasons as wide receivers coach, is now the offensive coordinator, his brother Cal moves from linebackers coach to defensive coordinator, and secondary coach Rich Miano is now an associate head coach along with George Lumpkin, who has been involved with the program in some capacity for nearly four decades.

While there is some familiarity on the coaching staff and on the roster, there are going to be a lot of new names penciled into the starting lineup, starting with the prolific offense.

Star QB Brennan, owner of 31 NCAA records and finished third in the Heisman Trophy voting last year, was drafted by the Washington Redskins. Along with Brennan, his record-breaking receiving trio of Jason Rivers, Davone Bess, and Ryan Grice-Mullen are all gone. All told, Hawaii has only four starters returning on offense.

QB Tyler Graunke gets his chance to start after being stuck behind Brennan for the last three seasons. Graunke threw for 1,234 yards and 10 touchdowns as the backup last season, though he started two games when Brennan had some injury issues. However, the senior will have competition behind him as third-string QB Inoke Funaki returns, along with the addition of two very good JUCO recruits, including Greg Alexander, who lit up the California junior college ranks over the last two seasons.

The new starting receiving corps will have their work cut out for them as they will have to replace the best receivers in Hawaii football history. WR Malcolm Lane is the top returning receiver (270 yards, 2 touchdowns, 19.3 yards per catch) and joining him in trying to replace Rivers, Bess, and Grice-Mullen is a very inexperienced cast, which includes speedster Michael Washington and Cal transfer Daniel Lofton, son of Hall of Fame receiver James Lofton.

While the pass is the focus of the offense, the backfield is the most veteran unit on offense and will take some load off of the revamped passing attack. Kealoha Pilares (388 yards rushing, 249 yards receiving and 4 total touchdowns) is a great blocking back and should only improve in just his sophomore season. Leon Wright-Jackson also returns, and the highly-regarded junior looks to make a huge impact this season after rushing averaging 6.6 yards per carry in limited touches last season.

One area that isn’t a concern is the offensive line, which should be sturdy in 2008, as the unit as a whole is more experienced. They lose First-Team All-American LG Hercules Satele and starting RG Larry Sauafea. However, First-Team All-WAC C John Estes returns, along with LG Keith AhSoon.

The defense will also look different as just four starters return to that side of the ball. The D-Line and Secondary seem to be hurt the most by the loss of starting talent. The defensive line loses three starters in First-Team All-WAC DT Michael Lafaele, DE Amani Purcell, and DE Karl Noa. The only returning starter is DT Fale Laeli (25 tackles, 2 sacks), but DE David Veikune (34 tackles, 7 sacks) was named a First-Team All-WAC honoree last season despite starting in just one game and returns to help anchor the front line.

In the secondary, the Warriors lose First-Team All-WAC CB Myron Newberry, CB Gerard Lewis, and SS Jacob Patek. The only players with starting experience that return are SS Keao Monteilh (19 tackles, 2 interceptions) and FS Desmond Thomas (56 tackles) who split time at the Free Safety spot last season. CB Ryan Mouton (26 tackles, 2 interceptions, 4.3 speed) is described by defensive backs coach Miano as the best corner that Hawaii has had in nine years, and he could prove to be one of the top defensive backs in the WAC this season.

Linebacker is the strength of Hawaii’s defense, as the Warriors have two of the top linebackers in the conference in Solomon Elimimian and Adam Leonard, Elimimian led the team with 141 tackles last season, and he was a First-Team All-WAC member, along with Leonard, who had an excellent season (105 tackles, 11.5 for loss, 2 sacks, 4 INT) despite having injury issues last season. Both players will have to come up huge once again if the Warriors are to be solid defensively. Also watch out for is Blaze Soares, who had 28 tackles (7 for loss) and two sacks in a reserve role last season

Warriors’ fans will have to be patient this season, as the team returns the fewest returning starters in the WAC. With several tough conference and non-conference games on the schedule, Hawaii will have a serious fight on their hands to make a return to the postseason, but with a lot of familiar faces and some new characters ready to step in and step up, a sixth bowl game in seven seasons is within reach.

Hawaii Warriors [0-1][0-0] at #5 Florida Gators [1-0][0-0]

Warriors Surprise the Gators; Fall Short of Upset

Gainesville, FL [AP] - The Warriors surprised everyone who was watching this game, as they kept toe to toe with the #5 team in the Nation. They even had the lead at one point of the game. Hawaii did a great job mixing up their game plan, rushing and passing. I guess that's what happens when a team gets a new coach.

Hawaii shockingly put the first points up on the board. They forced Florida to a three and out, drove down the field with ease, and scored on a 1 yard run by backup running back Kealoha Pilares. This woke up the Gators unfortunately, as they would put together a 6 play, 63 yard drive, capped off with a 37 yard run by last year's Heisman Winner, Tim Tebow.

On the ensuing drive, Hawaii got all the way down to Florida's 1 yard line. They would go for it on 4th down, but Wright-Jackson would get stuffed short. Florida would use this momentum to their advantage, as Tebow would dump it off to Kestahn Moore, who then ran it 76 yards for the score. But Hawaii was not giving up, scoring on their next drive on a 6 yards pass from Tyler Graunke to Wright-Jackson. With the score 14-14, Florida's Percy Harvin would break free on a 56 yard screen, giving them the lead. Hawaii answered back with a 24 yard field goal by Dan Kelly, which would lead us to half time.

On the opening drive of the 2nd half, Florida tried to get fancy, going for it on 4th down. But they would fail as Hawaii would intercept the pass. Hawaii would then drive down the field and get into the red zone once again. On 3rd and Goal, Wright-Jackson took a run up the middle, dove over the line, and got wrecked, fumbling the ball but luckily Hawaii's Alonzo Chopp was their to recover it for the touchdown, giving Hawaii their first lead of the game.

Kelly would make his 2nd field goal of the game to give Hawaii a ten point lead with 5 minutes left in the 4th quarter. From then on, it would be all Florida, as they would score 21 unanswered points. Two of those score came with under a minute remaining as Hawaii was trying to make a comeback.

Both Bryant [TL] and Mouton [TR] Picked off Canfield; Thomas makes a big hit on Canfield, Leonard [BR] celebrates after recording a sack

I know what you're thinking. No that is not a typo, I meant to put Run. Although Hawaii is known for their air attack, this season is exactly the opposite. With two extremely good running backs, the Warriors will be running a lot. Just think of last season's offense, and picture running instead of passing. Leon Wright-Jackson is a beast, and he is only a Junior. Hopefully he does not get injured [Knocks on Wood]

The Warriors came into this game wanting to rebound after last weeks tough loss against the Gators. They did just that, as they would squeeze by the Beavers and snuck out of Corvallis with the Win. The started with Oregon State winning the coin toss and electing to Kick. Hawaii was doing a great job running the ball, but was stopped and was forced to punt. On the 3rd play of the Beaver's drive, Canfield threw one of his three interceptions on the day, this one was intercepted by Jeremy Bryant, and was returned 67 yards for the touchdown.

After a punt by Oregon State, Hawaii would continue their success on the ground, as Leon Wright-Jackson would punch it in from the 3 yard line, making it 14-0 Hawaii. Oregon State finally got on the board with a interception return of their own, as Graunke threw off of his back foot and the ball went behind the receiver. Hawaii would then drive down the field quickly and added 3 more to their lead right before the half.

Wright-Jackson would continue his dominance as he would score his second touchdown of the game, on another goal line run. On the ensuing drive, Oregon State mixed it up a bit, throwing and running nicely, on their way to a touchdown of their own, making the score 24-14 Hawaii.

On the opening drive of the 4th, Hawaii was forced to kick a field goal, which would be the last point for the Warriors. Oregon State then tried to make a comeback, and it seemed like they were, as they scored in 3 minutes on a 33 yard pass from Canfield to Stroughter. Only down by 6, the Beavers forced the Warriors to punt with less than 2 minutes remaining. With no timeouts left, the Beavers tried their best to get down the field, but the Hawaii defense was too much to handle, and time would run out.

San Jose State Spartans [1-3][0-0] at Hawaii Warriors [1-1][0-0]

Warriors Win Conference Opener

The Hawaii Warriors won their conference opener game today, as they beat San Jose State in what some people would call a blowout. It seemed like there was no defense playing on both teams.

There were lots of big plays, including 3 record being broken. 2 Of which were the same record. With 30 seconds left in the 1st quarter, Michael Washington received the kickoff and took it to the house on a 96 yard return, breaking the NCAA record for longest kick return. But late in the 3rd quarter, San Jose State's Kevin Jurovich would take the kickoff from the middle of the endzone, all the way for the touchdown, breaking Michael Washington's record. The third record was by Hawaii quarter back Tyler Graunke, who would break the NCAA record for the longest pass, that was held by Florida's quarter back Tim Tebow. Graunke hooked up with Leon Jackson on a screen pass that went all the way, for a 83 yard touchdown.

Overall it was a good, exciting, but yet kind of scary game. Although both offenses were explosive, it's kind of bad that Hawaii's defense couldn't stop the passing attack of San Jose State. If they can't handle San Jose State's offense, how are they going to stop Boise or Fresno? Only time will tell.

Tyler Graunke had a phenomenal game, finishing with 306 yards, going 11 for 14 and 5 Touchdowns. But he did throw an interception. He has yet to play a game without throwing an interception. Although those are some impressive stats, Leon Wright-Jackson's are even better. The Player of the game had 325 yards offensively (172 Rushing, 153 Receiving). He also scored three touchdowns. Another player who did great was Hawaii wide receiver Michael Washington. It wasn't on the offensive side of the ball though, it was on special teams. He is Hawaii's version of Devin Hester, as he would take two kickoffs for touchdowns, and almost broke a punt return for a touchdown. Next week the Warriors have to fly up to Fresno, to take on the Bulldogs of Fresno State.
