I haven't played NBA 2k since NBA 2k7. So there are a few things I need to get used to.

What are the bars under each player mean?

How do you use lock down defense feature?

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

You can use the right stick to adjust the defensive pressure (tight, normal, sag), and cheat to left or right on the fly. It's kinda a nifty change.

What the poster already said. If you get good at it enough, or lucky like I did you can poke the ball away from behind. I'm glad they have this, it adds skill to defense. I always play off Rondo and play tight defense with good defenders.

The bars let you know how hot or cold a player is and the likelyhood of the shot going in. If you noticed that as you move around the bar gets full or empty. If the bar is full that means that there is a good chance that you would make it from there. When it gets red that means your hot and light blue for cold.

Lock on defence is triggered with the LT Trigger(you must hold it down). Once your player is in good position an icon will appear(forgot what the icon looks like) letting you know that you can lock on. Just stick around your opponent for a while and the icon should appear. The better defenceman gets the icon sooner i believe and can lock on longer.

Hope this helps

Does the lockdown D stuff just happen naturally or do you have to push the left trigger halfway or anything?

They'll move into defensive stance naturally, but if you need assistance (a.k.a. Lock-D) then you hold LT.

You hold it for as long as your want lock on D. Keep in mind your opponent can still get around you and at that point its better you go back to controlling your player so you can get in from on him. After getting infront go back to lock on.
