You should not only be able to create plays and modify existing plays, but there should be generic playbooks that you can select and the coach will use that play book. There should be an offensive playbook and a defensive playbook. On offense there will be generic playbooks you can choose for your team (especially when you sign another coach and get rid of the real life nba coach of a team) such as the triangle offense, the princeton offense, and various full court and half court offenses. Instead of having plays every team runs you can have teams either play like they do in the nba or when you get a coaching change you can opt to keep the old nba coach's playbook or pick a new one or create a new one. You can create one from scratch, have mostly created plays with few modified plays, have mostly modified plays with a few created plays, or take plays from certain offenses. Whatever you do the choice is up to you. You would have full control of how your team runs. On defense you wil also have a playbook that works the same as the offenseand run defensive plays such as 1-2-2 zone ,1-3-1 zone, 3-2 strong side combination, and etc. You should have defenses to control the full court and half court. Plays assigning defensive assignments as well. For the existing coach's in the nba such as doc rivers, larry brown, phil jackson you can either keep their playbooks when you play franchise mode or get rid of them completely or just add a certain number of modified and/or created plays to an existing play book. If you make a coaching change say signing a coach for the magic and let doc rivers go you can sign the coach and either keep the previous coach's playbook, keep it and create and/or modify some plays to add to the existing playbook, or you can adopt a playbook you can choose from in the game or create your own playbook from scratch. The playbooks can also be user oriented so if you save it on a memory card to take it to a friend's house you can run plays that you put together. Also during the game there could be quick plays that you can draw up yourself or follow the coach's suggestion on a play he wants to run depending on your playbook and/or the coach's philosophy he will either refer to a play in the playbook, draw one up or modify one from a playbook.
