My suggestion is that like football games have audibles you can have plays that you can call. If you play against the cpu, online, or with a user against the cpu then you can shuffle through the playbook with either the directional pad or some other way. Here the playbook will open up like a little transparent book on the screen on an area of the screen that is away from the action (whereever the players aren't or going to it can be a corner or where ever on the screen) and you would press a button, probably the select button to choose the play. The problem is if you have a very thick playbook then it would take a while so either you can pause the game or bookmark certain plays or set them as some kind of audible to use. The play on the page would capture the whole play showing the motion players go for carrying out the play. You would see the xs and os moving on the page, ex: the center is supposed to cut a screen for the ball handler and roll to the basket, on the page you would either see an x or a c setting a screen for the pg icon and then going towards the basket. When you play against a user the plays will not be shown on the screen, but code words that you use for the play will appear on the page of the transparent playbook page instead of the play. Ex: I am on the spurs and I pick a play out of the playbook for manu to run past a screen and hit a baseline shot. I gave that play the code word: fish. On the screen whenever you play against another user the word fish would be written on the play page instead of the motion page. This may be a tedious process though so I want to get some feed back on this.

Here's my take on how it should work:
When you open the "Change Play" window, it should be a small, transparent window divided into three section. There should be a top section which is shaped like a rectangle, short and long, stretching from one end of the window to the other. Then the rest of the window should be evenly divided into two halves.
The top section would feature the word "Tempo" in the middle of it; on the left side of the section would be the Left trigger symbol and the phrase "Slow Down." On the right side of the section, there would be a symbol of the Right Trigger and the phrase "Speed Up." That way I could seamlessly change the temp of play by my team.
In the left section, there should be a picture of the right analog. Along the right analog there should be small arrows of up, up/right, right, right/down, down, etc. If any of you have played WSB 98, then you know what I am talking about - just imagine the pitching interface. Next to each of the arrows should be a short name for a play. The names would have to be like seven letters or less so that they would fit, but they would include whatever plays you have put into your playbook (you could switch plays in an exhibition by pausing the game and replacing moves to the right analog).
In the right section, I would have the names of the five players on the court currently, their energy status and their biorhythm. By their name I would have their button Icon and by pressing their button Icon, they would automatically be substituted for at the next deadball opportunity.
All of this would have to be kind of small to fit, but I think it could be easily done and would really make this add to this game!
