View Full Version : Win $50 - APF2K10 cover art contest

This was another forum member’s idea… so let’s roll with it:
Scenario: (FICTION at the moment)
(please look up the word 'fiction' if you do not know what it means)
2KSports has decided to continue the 2K football series. This will be a limited budget game that will build upon and improve APF2K8. The game will feature updated graphics and commentary, new stadiums and teams, corrected APF2K8 bugs, improved presentation, franchise mode, and more customization (e.g. you can edit every generic player’s name and number and the names will even show up on the uniforms during league play). Also, in an unprecedented move, 2K will steal something from EA, instead of vice versa. 2K will implement Madden09’s grass. Company officials have stated, upon their review, it was the only thing in their game worth implementing.
2K has invited you to submit your idea for the Xbox360 or PS3 box cover art. It must meet the following guidelines:
1) This limited budget game will not feature a paid athlete or coach. A generic athlete may be used or any other non athlete.
2) The cover art must be something a consumer would look at and be compelled to purchase the game.
3) The cover art must be something 2K would permit to be published.
4) Quality photos, creativity and market appeal are important.
5) The name of the game is ‘All Pro Football 2K10.’
6) You must include the 2KSports logo.
7) You must use a Xbox 360 or PS3 game template.
Based on the criteria above, several will be selected and voted upon. The deadline for submissions is Tuesday, October 21st at 1000 EST. The winning submission will receive a $50 Gamestop gift card.
Stay tuned: This contest will feature a brand new 2K10 football song by Ebineezer!

I just use Powerpoint. Copy and paste my sample or get one online and copy/paste your photo... add text and submit.
P.S. Brownster14 probably uses PhotoShop. He is a gold, I am a generic.

If he's a gold and you're a generic, I'm a beer-bellied middle-aged bald man sitting on the recliner watching and eating Cheetos.
Mmmmmm...Cheetos.

If they did a new football game, it should not be called All Pro Football. That was a horrible name from a marketing perspective. Just my 2 cents, and I have plenty more where that came from on the concepts, vision, an goals of a new football game.

What would you name the game?

I agree. I like 'Legends of the Gridiron 2K10'. However, this could be a game without 'legends' and 'Generics of the Gridiron' doesn't sound good. I would go with a name other than 'All Pro Football', but I think 2K would see it as a brand (although not a top selling one) and keep the name.
I have plenty more where that came from on the concepts, vision, an goals of a new football game.
I am assuming a low budget game based on number of sales which would limit the time and improvements put into the game. I think almost all of us would be thrilled to get the game described in the scenario and it could be completed quickly with a small budget.
I agree with your statements, but tried to be realistic with the scenario.

per the rules... no paid athletes. The other cover could be deemed generic teams/players (no logos are visible). Your cover will not lose anything by replacing the pro player with a generic one.

Nope. :)
But if you are telling the truth and that is your cousin, I wouldn't call Aplington-Parkersburg a cup-cake school. Parkersburg, Iowa has a population of 2,000. Miami, Florida has a population of 2,000,000. Parkersburg has 1 high school, Miami has 40. Parkersburg has 4 current NFL players, Miami has 4 current NFL players.

Here's my final entry didn't have much time, but since willis was a problem I just went back to my original idea. With the title logo as close as I can get it to 2k's style, that they use on their recent games :D (keep that in mind when voting, if 2k was to make a cover...it would look something like this title logo).

I wouldn't go with the 2k10 names. Instead I would stick with titles that better represent the theme of the game. This would allow the gaming companies to go to binanual release and focus more on the game, then putting out a release every year. And no, Bring the Pain, would not be the theme, but I couldn't think of anything better last night. lol

That looks awesome Valdarez! Legends of the Gridiron is also the name I like.
2K makes great games, but how can 'amateurs' come up with box art and promotion ideas that are 100x better than what they put out?
IF... another football game comes out, they should have a contest for the box cover art, advertisements and promotion ideas (and include Ebeneezer's song in the game).
Offering a gift of a free game and a T-shirt for A+ work has to be a better deal than what they are paying for C- work.

Well, I wouldn't be too hard on them. 2K Sports is far better at innovating than most in the sports genre. Look at what they did with APF2K8.
- Unparallelled Customization in a Sports/Action game (Uniform / Teams)
- Meaningful Abilities vs. Numbers (this is a game, not sports coding 101)
- Balanced Gaming in Sports Game (NFL, NBA, other games are NOT balanced)
- True Strategy Sports gaming (Amazing jump in sports gaming)
That last one can not be over emphasized. As an RTS fan and a strategy fan first, what they did with APF was truly revolutionary in the field of sports games on the strategy front. Honestly the balanced teams, with custom content is an AMAZING concept and I give them total props for it. Whoever came up with the idea at 2K Sports should get a raise and a huge pat on the back.
Where they failed, was not letting go of the past and bringing in the Legends. That was just a bad idea all the way around. They vastly over estimated the product appeal of older legend players and failed to recognize the market potential vs. the cost. It's a pretty common theme that most gamers would have preferred full on customization over the likes of Jerry Rice and Dan Marino. Give us the ability to MAKE these players, and tack on the custom moves.
2K Sports future in football lies in providing full customization, tools for user generated content, mechanism to share user generated content, and better online features. Why pay for Madden, NCAA, AFL, for a total of nearly $200, when you can pay $60 for 2K Sports Legends of the GridIron and play ANY number of leagues that is only limited based on the fan base's imagination.
I recently have been transitioning from a software architect role to a product management role, and it's a difficult task to envision a future product based on the needs of the customer and the ability of the company to deliver valuing in costs of development, time to market, and return on investment. I imagine this is much more complicated in the gaming world where you try to keep secrets and ideas close to the vest. I'm sure with hindsight and fan's reaction in the review mirror now, that 2K Sports would have made several different key decisions.

I did this today while I am still learning how to use this soft ware. This is not a cover but a ad on the #1 selling points. I did include the Legends but IMO they are not the selling point of this game. Madden has legends also. I went with the selling points that separates tAPF 2K8 from any other football game period. If you critique be nice about since I have had this software less than 24 hours and never used anything like it before. I made the pic a lot bigger than it is showing LOL.
