View Full Version : still asking for product key...

I've posted in several threads, called 2ksports, sent emails to tech support and customer service and still NOTHING. I'm watching the delayed beginning of the lakers and bobcats on TNT; although that's not an interesting game and it's still pre-season but still I wanna be able to play after this game. I really want someone, hopefully the 2k Admin Ron, to tell me what in the world I should do.

I did everything but NOTHING works. I still get the language selection first, then the agreement, and then it asks for the product key. Please, please, please I'm sick of seeing the 2k9 box sitting on my table and not being played.

Any help is HIGHLY APPRECIATED.

Thank you in advance.

What exactly did you do?

before I tell you what I did step-by-step, I should mention that I'm currently in the caribbean in medical school. My brother sent me the copy. I'm not that familiar with steam so I'm thinking it could be because I'm in the caribbean and the steam updates don't apply hear. However, this is the internet, I've never heard of a game that works only in the US. I have a real fast computer with a fast internet connection so I shouldn't have trouble.

What I did was...
1. insert the cd in the drive
2. it started installing steam first
3. it prompted me to register with an ID and password
4. I registered and got connected to steam
5. then after completing updates and whatnot it said "click finish and the NBA 2k9 will start installing."
6. I clicked finish and the select language came up
7. I selected "English" and hit OK
8. I then click "I agree blah, blah, blah" and hit install
9. Then the product key wizard popped up and asked me for the CD key, I hit next, thinking that it will just move on without it but NOTHING worked.
10. I uninstalled, reinstalled, did everything that people suggested but it keeps asking for the cd key.

There has to be a solution.

While this side of the forum may have a huge amount of stickies, I could be wrong but I believe this has been talked about, You are probably going to have to sift through some of those to find your answer. Or maybe this might be of help. Click> PC SKU Activation Key (http://2ksports.com/forums/showthread.php?t=191998)

Thanks Darkspace for the reply.
I've been through all the stickies and posts already, been reinstalling countless times, but none of them works. I've tried to follow the alternatives of installing and updating steam, but it didnt work out.

Btw, I'm from overseas and I'm working on Windows XP.
Does it matters?

Thanks

I have the same problem and i'm on the caribbean too. The first update that you do its goes to 100% or stays in 26% like me? I think it has to do with that

i encounter the same problem - and i'm from Israel (although my game was bought in the US).

When i asked the tech support about installing the game abroad they told me that there shouldn't be a problem doing that.

they told me they would get back to me on monday with an answer (i promise to update you about any developments).

in the meanwhile i'm searching for an answer and can't find one in any forum....

I think I've realized why would this happen (I live in Taiwan)

After I played with windows registry for a while
I found that there was a key about region for steam in the registry
for me, it's TW

I changed it into US, block steam in my firewall and open steam
then steam prompted me that I can start to install 2K9 (yup! without CD key)
but I can't go further as it still needs to connect to steam to verify...

and once I connect it again to internet, it told me that this product can't be purchased
in my region, at the same time, I went back to windows registry and found that the key
I modified to US is now back to TW...

so it's steam's problem... I think...
and it definitely has to do with installing abroad USA.

Hi Celtic,

In order to change your registry you go to : start---> Run ---> and type "regedit".

hope that will help us find a sollution eventually.

I think clydeli is right because I was starting to get the same impression. Everyone in the US managed to get the game installed and are fussing about small things like airballs, dunking, post play and all that while we're stuck without an installation.

I already figured that it has to do with us buying the game from the US, especially gamestop, and trying to install it where we live abroad. I can't wait till december to return to the US to install it, this is absurd.

I'll keep trying forever, once anyone of us gets a solution please post it here so that we can all start installing. BTW, I have no idea how to change the registry value... please post how. Thank you guys.

We'll definitely get a solution, hopefully from "2k admin ron," if he's hearing us.

it's not that important about that reg key,
I don't think we can do much just by messing with it. :(

hope that 2K or steam will provide a solution ASAP
It sucks we buy a legal version but can't even install it...

anyway, here goes the reg path:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Valve\Steam

let's hope so,

Admin RON, if you read this, WE CAN'T PLAY THE GAME...

I also can't find how to change the region btw, i get a window with a lot of files, but what do i have to do exactly ?

I guess that there may be a chance that this could work if we can change the region... Because the game is available in belgium too

I've changed it already...man...
steam will automatically change it back.
so don't bother trying to modify it.

a possible sollution could be to change the key and use a proxy server from us in order to fool steam....

There has to be a solution.
Exit out of Steam
Put disc into disc drive
Restart steam
Go to File
Select Check for Steam Client Update
Steam should update
After update it should let you know that you have confirmed 1 copy of NBA 2K9
Install NBA 2K9

That's not the problem

Problem is that we're installing a game without an activation key, in a country where you need one...

Europe has an activation code and needs one for installation
US hasn't got an activation code and doesn't need one

We haven't got an activation code but we do need one...

Get it ?

2K needs to send us a key, we paid for this game !!!
IT'S KILLING ME TO SEE THAT GREAT GAME LYING THERE AND NOT BEING ABLE TO PLAY IT, IS JUST..... AAARGHHHH

Some people are complaining about this game, but we can't even play it

If anyone from 2k sports is reading this thread, please send us some activation codes!

2k please figure something out for God's sake we need to run this game... I'm finally convinced that it's only the people that got the game from the US and trying to run it abroad.

I have never seen a game that works ONLY on US soil. PLEASE 2k fix this problem so we can start playing.

one thing that pi$$es me off sooo much is that I can get any company for any game on the phone. I can get 2k games on the phone and take 2 on the phone; even though, they're outsources to the UK, at least they answer their phones. Since the game's been released I can't get 2ksports on the phone not once. I've left at least 4 voicemails, emails to 2ksports, and nothing is returned. Why in the world can't these people just answer us and give us a quick solution. There has to be a patch or something we can download from 2k in order to fix this stupid cd key issue. They say they fixed it but they never considered those fans that bought the game from gamestop and tried to install it abroad.

I refuse to believe that this is as hard as solving the mid-east crisis.

I have to agree with your theory. I also bought the game at a Gamestop in the US, and trying to install it in Mexico. Well, no luck!! Steam keeps asking me for the product code!

As someone mentioned above, I think the problem is with Steam. They probably made the fix available only for those connecting to the internet in the US.

If that is the case, the only reasonable solution is for 2K Sports to provide us with a product key, don't you think?

Either that, or update Steam so that everyone outside the US is not asked for a product code when attempting to install the game.

I perfectly agree with you paco... believe me it's really annoying to see people having the game fully downloaded and complaining about absurd things like if the crowd is clapping in the arena or if online gaming is important, when we're forced staring at garnett on the cover.

I hope that 2k sports can either give us a cd key or a steam update for abroad players. Otherwise, I'd have to wait till December when I get back home and just install it. This sux man.

I'm gonna keep checking this thread every day, if anyone's gotta solution please post asap and I'll do the same. Hang in there, hopefully someone will hear us yell.

Well, the only phone number I found where an actual person talks to you is the 2K Sports U.S. Support Phone number: 1-866-219-9839. I spoke to some guy from the UK who actually tried to help! He gave me a possible solution but it didn't work. He said to call him back if I still had problems. So I will call back tomorrow morning. I will be demanding a product code!

I suggest you call the phone number mentioned above. Forget about calling the 415-507-7750 number. This guy named Christian never answers his phone or returns any phone calls. Don't even bother sending e-mails to customerservice@2ksports.com. They never write you back!

You will need a CD key. That is the fix for us that are not in the USA. Christian will send you one. He will get to you sooner or later. I can attest to the fact that he is returning phone calls and replying to e-mails (he's probably swamped right now). You'll just need to be patient. I know it's tough to wait all this time, but the game is surely worth the wait! Good luck!

Well, Im just like you guys. Living in Brazil, I still can`t install the game that I HAVE PAID for. They already got our money and gave us nothing but headaches in return. While we stay here they will still be chilling out, so my suggestion is to spread the word. T2 IS SCAMMING US! Go to gaming forums you know (IGN, Gamespot, etc), tell your friends and most important go to Amazon.com, Gamestop, Bestbuy, and all major etailers you know and let everyone know:

1) That they are selling a faulty product that will not work outide North America;
2) The bad joke their customer support is (do they have one actually?)

Maybe when we mess with their pockets (like they did with ours) they will remember that we exist.

By the way, I have emailed several times customersupport, techsupport, the store i bought the the game (got it directly from T2Store) and guess what? Not a single reply, of couse.

That`s it, spread the word guys!
