View Full Version : NBA 2K9 (PC) Crash to Desktop thread
3pointshooter

I am creating this thread as I am seeing a trend of people having the exact same problem. For whatever reason the game will crash to desktop with no explanation. Although when it happens may vary I am seeing it only when I am in the main menu.
I have to recheck the config.cfg file to make sure that my refresh rate and resolution hasn't changed or else I will continue to have problems. One time I couldn't play a certain team. I forget the name but everytime I attempted to play the game I would get kicked to desktop. The only fix was to simulate the game. If you are also noticing this post about here and any possible fix you've come across.

Same problem, getting real ****ed now. I had an amazing game going and it did this yet again in the third quarter. It's not even fun to play because I know damn well I won't finish the game, I'll just get booted again.

I'd rather not be able to start a game than be fooled and teased by playing 3/4 way through only to lose everything. I'm going to try to uninstall it and reinstall it to see if that does anything. Already backed my saves up.

What a shocker, uninstalling the game and redownloading it did nothing. I got through one game and a one on one match, and then it booted me in the first quarter again the Spurs.
Other people who bought the game told me that once they downloaded the pirated version (not illegal since they already paid for the game) that it doesn't crash since it bypasses Steam's involvement. It sounds like it's something to do with Steam's integration.

I've tried closing Steam after booting the game, but that didn't work. It very well could be Steam. Not sure.

I'm having the same problems when it reboots for no apparent reason. Also having a problem with my controller. I'm using a Logitech dual action. I can control the players on one-side of the court only, but then the teams change sides, I have to pass the ball to get it up the court instead of dribbling. Anyone else have this problem?

It only happens to me when the CPU team calls a timeout after I hit a shot. Rasual Butler hit a corner three in Kobe's face to tie the game at 76 in the 4th, then the CPU called a T/O which crashed the game. Never fails.

No one does anything special to get mine to crash. I can just be dribbling up court and it'll kick me. I wish they'd fix this over the stupid console problems since this is a gamebreaker, the console niggles aren't.

Put 2K in windowed mode by going to options/video settings, then minimize the window, find Steam in the bottom right corner of your taskbar (should be a black and white icon), right click and click exit.

I'll try that right now. Tried playing the Spurs for the second time today (best team in the league besides mine) and I was beating them by 20 and the game booted me again. Nothing more fun than that
EDIT: Uh, I don't know how you did that but it doesn't work because the game is running and is a Steam application. It gives me that error.
I actually got it to close via task manager, but then I got a BSOD at the end of the third quarter.

I called 2ksports tech support, and they told me that it was my computer that was the problem. (B.S if you ask me) They also said they haven't received any calls of the problem ( blue screen then reboots) They're tech support is useless. I just want to be able to play this game.

November 4th, 2008, 02:59 AM
I think I might have found the problem for re-booting and the blue screen. I went into Nvidia settings and turned my resolution down from 1280 by 768 pixels all the way down to 960 by 600 pixels, and played 3 games in a row with out it kicking me to the desktop. I don't know if this will work for everyone, but it's worth a try. Now if I can get my controller to control my team after halftime, I'll be satisfied. I have to pass the ball to advance it down the court, when the teams change ends. I can't dribble the ball.

I believe I know have a fix for this problem. By adding that game to the exclusion list of DEP the problem went away. Or you can disabling DEP by using /NoExecute=alwaysoff instead of /NoExecute=optout (reboot). Should solve the problem of the game crashing to desktop.
For the 1st time since I purchased this game I am now able to use the NBA 2K9 desktop icon to start up a game without it crashing at the main menu. That's a first in my book. Still testing though.

The crashing for NBA 2K9 for the PC seem to happen (for me) when I click on the mouse or use the green button just as soon as the game loads (the 1st screen). If I wait until all the team's icons are shuffled in order I don't experience any crashing. But if I right click or use the green xbox 360 game pad button before then I notice a crash. After 5 starts it's pretty consistent. I can't guarantee this will work for you.

You could try posting your pc specs including the OS and the situation before the game crashed and answer some of these questions to help eliminate the possible causes.
But from what I read so far it might be an AMD problem. The game might not be optimized for 64bit OS.
Is VISTa 64bit stable? Not just in gaming?
-----
Does your PC meet the minimum system requirements? I know those requirements are not really accurate but still you should take it into consideration
Try running the game at the LOWEST possible setting and if the problem goes away then try setting the graphics higher little by little and testing for the problem.
Check that the resolution/refreshrate you are using is supported by your monitor/LCD
-----
Are you playing online or offline?
If playing offline are you always connected to the internet? If you are always connected to the internet try disabling your internet connection first and try replicating the error
If playing online check your firewall/AV and try to add steam and NBA2k9 executables to the exception
-------
Are your graphics drivers updated? Try checking for and using updated drivers for your graphics card. Also try to find special hotfixes for the games from your videocard websites
---
Is your directx updated? Try updating your directx to the latest (search "download directx redistributable" in google and click the result that leads to the MS dload page and download...install when finished)
---
Is your graphics card overclocked? Try returning it to stock speeds and try again. There are sometimes system stability issues when overclocking especially when aggressively oc'ing your card.
---
There are many possible causes and it is best to eliminate the obvious ones so that it would be easier to determine the culprit
By the way I have a low-medium build STOCK PC and everything is working fine at the highest setting (except for AA I only set it at 2x)

600W OCZ StealthXStream
22" Viewsonic VX 2262wmp
monitoring my resources using rivatuner the game seems to use the dual core CPU pretty well (uses 75-85% both cores) the GPU doesnt heat up much (mine never reaches 70c) and RAM usage is at 1.8Gb
im not really sure now what causes the CTD :(
regarding my Oced processor, well it runs cool anyway since im using aftermarket cooling, my other games run without a hitch too (crysis, GRID, the POS farcry2) and ive also tested the OC with orthos prime for a few hours without errors so it shouldnt be an OC problem
im running the game maxed out BTW, but i dont think that should be the problem since people running the game on lower settings are also experiencing CTD. my first suspect was a memory leak (wherein the game uses more and more memory till it runs out and the game crashes. well im not sure if it is, but will try to monitor some more..so far the game hasnt crashed again since i started monitoring so ill check if its a memory leak)

Every other game plays fine, Crysis, GTA IV, COD4, WiC, GRID, you name it, except for this title.
Heat is not an issue, neither for my CPU, nor my GPU
EVGA Precision shows my GPU at the 65-70 degree range at full load when playing this game, which is well in line for my GPU.
CoreTemp shows my cores in the high 40 - low 50 range during load, once again, well within limits, and then some.
Heat is not an issue.
Vista x64 automatically defrags my hd once a week.

The culprit is NOT my system, but rather this game itself.

180.48 WHQL drivers here.
I've done some troubleshooting and realized that in my NV game config profile for 2K9, I had 4x AA forced on, whereas in the game itself, I had 8x MSAA selected.
I changed the NV game profile to application controlled instead of forcing it, thus allowing the games 8x MSAA to take effect and so far no crashes.
Furthermore, when I play the game now, I alt-tab out of it and kill the steam process(es) via task manager.
So in my case, it may have something to do with either the appropriate AA level being in effect and/or Steam being taken out of the equation yielding a non-crashing game. Of course, it may very well crash the next time I play, but so far 3 games and no crashes since the above changes were made.

December 25th, 2008, 03:55 PM

So far so good.
The above changes (once more for reference: letting the games 8x MSAA take over and no longer forcing AA via Nvidia's Control -- a conflicting AA level at that, as well as killing the Steam Processes via task manager) have proven to be successful, at least in my case.
7 games played so far and no more crashes or blue screens.
All temps still check out fine on both my GPU and CPU.

you're on to something there. if i do anything in the initial screen, after the profile loads, it crashes. if i wait... pretty stable.
the thing about alt-tabbing out and killing the steam.exe process may work only because it gives the game enough time to load some array.

I just got through another game without a CTD, and I even let it paused for about 30 minutes. usually even if I did that I would come up to be greeted with the desktop. Hopefully it was my AV scanning files non stop, so if you don't have NOD32 check to see if your AV has any sort of real time scanner and disable it.

they wont because they already have out money anyway :P
things ive done (latest, and boy ive tried so many things)
1. put Steam on NOD32's exclusions list
2. turn off IMON and AMON
3. Let windows manage my pagefile
* I have 4gb ram and before i set my pagefile to static 4gb min/max..
still have crashes though but at least not in game, sometimes it crashes when scanning through stats, so yeah after a game, i get paranoid and dont bother looking at signature moves and top3 plays (the top 3 plays is dumb anyway) and proceed to save the association ASAP lol

They can't even get their own site working, every time I try to log in through the boards I get taken to the main page where I have to log in all over again.
I also find that after a game is over, and all those stats they show on the NBA.com thing or whatever, if I click on one of them I instantly get booted to the desktop every time without fail.

I've actually been having good luck. I got one CTD (which still happened even before it started happening every damn game) and a BSOD which is my soundcard's fault, but other than that I've played about 6 games without a problem. I just keep disabling those NOD32 things. XFire says I've played 6 hours in the last week, so that's 6 hours of no issues.
Maybe it's all a fluke.

i installed the new nvidia drivers. as opposed to getting into the game only if i waited patiently for the movies in the intro menu to finish, now, I get a CTD when changing the home or away teams.

Ive started getting random CTD's too.
CHKDSK turned up nothing.
Memory/RAM checks out fine as well.
The culprit is NOT my system, but rather this game itself.
I have the Steam version, and a warez version, but I am running the Steam one.
System specs:
Q6600 @ 3.2 (on a TRUE h/s fan unit)
GTX 260 216 SC
4GB DDR2
Vista X64 Ultimate SP1
Using an X360 controller
i tried many things like offline mode, compatibity mode to XP sp 32 etc. but nothing worked
so far im trying out turning off physx on my nVIDIA control panel..so far 3 games and no CTD
specs
e8400@3.6GHz
GTX 260 (forceware 181.00)
4Gb OCZ Fatal1ty DDR2 800
Vista 64 sp1
using both the steam and reloaded version crashes :(
i have
q6600 3ghz
gtx 260 (180.84 beta drivers for gta iv)
2gb DD3 RAM
Vista 64 ultimate sp1
xbox 360 controller

as far as "upgrading" to win7, thats not a very sound idea as win7 is still in beta stage although its running smooth so far (at least based on my experience)
there has to be something thats causing your CTD and its not just as easy as saying "go upgrade" esp if your PC meet the requirements. It could be the drivers, a PC component thats failing, or a conflict with the program thats why you have to be more specific what issues you are having and if you are having this issue with other games or is it NBA 2k9 specific..
in short, help us help you :)

1) Yeah well you won't necessarily be "upgrading" to an OS that lasts only 30 days (legally).
2) Wouldn't go as far as saying it's good. Still has a lot of issues to fix and gets a BIG thumbs down for lack of support.

I still say its a stupid advise (if all things fail, upgrade) so for my config, ive been having CTD problems before, at this point my PC is more than enough for the game, and if I wasnt that determined to test many configs and just followed your irresponsible advise then how?
So if a Corei7 user with a GTX 280 is having CTD problems no matter what he tries youll advise him to step up to a GTX 295? thats just silly, id rather be humble enough to say I dont know how to help than tell someone to spend money just because "i must feel so smart and have to give advise even if it isnt sound"

3. In wobblers case, whom I was addressing that response to, he has done all he could and followed what you did yet he is still having CTD problem. My conclusion is that a) Then it might be a hardware issue thus the need to upgrade his hardware in order to play this game without encountering the problem over and over again (that is if he intends to continue to play this game). b) Wait for a patch. c) Play another game
I never referred to your config.
follows on 2
4. Your changing the circumstances and I have to change my view based on the circumstance. Obviously if you have more than enough to play this game and still encounter CTD. You've exhausted all possible resolutions to your problem, then I would say that the game has programming issues and conflicts with the OS that affect its performance. Unless you know how to patch it yourself well then kudos to you, if not wait for that overdue patch.
If you think I am monotonous about everything then I pity your view in life.

^^ wobblers specs should be enough to run the game
I have Vista 64
Athlon X2 5200+
Radeon 3870
2GB RAM
now had you been more "detailed" in your explaination instead of just saying "upgrade" then I would have been cool with your reply.
that being said, if all things fail, the easiest escape would be reformatting instead of just upgrading and try to play the game with just the minimum apps needed
In this case maybe just the OS, drivers and the game to see if it still suffers from CTD,
installing an extra 2gig sounds good to since he has 64bit VIsta (although thats just for extra perfomance and may not directly be related to the CTD problems)
@wobbler, have you tried updating your drivers? and when you did, did you properly uninstall it?
(changing drivers didnt do the trick for me but it could do for you)
do this
1. download latest ATI driver (dont install yet)
2. download "guru3d driver sweeper" and download (and install)
3. uninstall current driver and reboot
4.boot into safe mode and run driver sweeper (clean ATI display)
5.reboot to normal mode and install latest ATI driver
6. reboot and try to play if it helps

I found out my CTD wasn't even NOD32 related. I started leaving it enabled and it's fine as well. No idea what changed, but it changed before I applied the patch as well.
My BSOD are from my stupid *** Audigy soundcard, but that's on Vista. The one I have doesn't even have Vista drivers because Creative is an asinine company.

I was continually crashing to the desktop as well, both before and after the patch. I suspected it was sound related and removed my Creative Labs Audigy 2 ZS card (in a win XP system). The problem has disappeared and the game runs just fine now (albeit without sound).
This is not the first game that has given me issues and as such I have a new card on order. Just an FYI for people with this card (or other Audigy). Try removing it and see if it fixes the problem.

That's the one I have. I thought about removing it and going with onboard sound but never got around to it. Then it just stopped crashing.
It's the worst sound card I've ever used. Nothing but problems any time I tried updating drivers, and any error is usually because of it. Maybe if Creative would get their heads out of their asses and code some worthwhile drivers it wouldn't suck so bad, but I'll never buy another Creative product as long as I live.

ok i think the problem has something to do with the cache files
my problem is/was that the game would crash when performing a certain layup from a certain angle and sometimes after i hit exit at the end of the game. usually on the second in a row game but sometimes in the first too (believe me when i say it's very annoying, especially when having 8min quarters .
i played the game for several months without having the "crash on the end" problem until i applied the patch...
so i downloaded a pirate version to try it without the patch.. crash was still there
but when i deleted the cache files i managed to play 2 games in a row, and not get crashed on that crashy layup..
so i apply the patch on the pirated version and crashes were back...
i'm not saying it's the patch, cause i know people had similar ctd problems before it. but what i am saying is that it's the solution for some people and it's worth giving it a shot
vista users can find the cache files folder on
C:\Users\(User Name)\AppData\Roaming\2K Sports\NBA 2K9\Cache
xp users, unfortunately i don't know :/
i'm gonna keep updating on my situation!
please do the same so we can find a solution cause 2k obviously has her attention in console versions of the game

Could it be your soundcard, I have the same problem (audigy 2zs, latest drivers). Try to reduce the hardware acceleration:
# Click Start, click Run, type dxdiag in the Open box, and then click OK.
# Click the Sound tab.
# Under DirectX Features, move the Hardware Sound Acceleration Level slider to the left (2x,minimum)
This way you cay play without re-booting problems problems.

So this is all data i can provide, but u will say Nvidia driver are not updated, and it's correct, i've tried all the last nvidia Drivers but they bug with games, i have many games in my PC, like Americas Army, GTA SA, NFS MW, PES 2k9, & all this games work fine with the current nVidia Driver.
Last day i've tried installing NBA 2k9 in another PC, so i've installer Windows 7 RC in this machine then i've installed NBA 2K9 In Windows 7, Windows display a big error message saying something like " this program need "vcredist_x86" and this message mean "Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable Package (x86)" so i've installed it and then he have update some package like ".net Framework 3.0 & 3.0 SP1" then "Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable Package SP1 (x86)" and game started in windows 7 without problem's little bit slow but game started.
Now back to my Pc with Nvidia card 7600 GT, game start but he crash when match loading, i can hear the supporters sounds and ambiance soud in the stadium, for 1 sec & he crash to Desktop.
this is a screenshot of my problem :

Dunno why you have random crashing in NBA 2k9... Maybe it's because of too high temperature, maybe it's because of Windows Home version (not windows xp professional), maybe it's because you have some 'mess' in your system... i guess...
I don't know is this game use 4core CPU so try to set Processor Affinity on NBA 2k9 (in Windows Task Manager for example) for:
- only CPU 0, CPU 1 and CPU 2 and test;
- if not works, set only CPU 0 and CPU 1 and test.
However, I don't know is this sth change. I remember there was a thread about SB sounds card making crash the game and I bet this is a problem, because you have SB Audigy 4 emulated. I suggest turn it off and use integrated for tests.
