View Full Version : How to use Walter Payton effectively?

I've gotten pretty good production from most of the Gold RB, but I unfortunately haven't had too much luck with Payton. I must be doing something wrong since he seems to be pretty popular on the boards. How do you use him to maximize his effectiveness? What kind of team/offensive schemes are you using? Thanks!

Walter IMO is the worst RB out of the gold ones, thats dispointing since he was the the greatest HB ever. his attributes are lackluster.

Walter is the best IMO...

His leadership helps him get better blocks with the generic lineman, and I usually use one bronze legend lineman with leadership to help the blocking even more and this way no other lineman is needed. And you see some of the best blocking this way.

His goal line dive is deadly if you know how to use it, just do it in practice mode and you will figure it out, it's amazing when done right.

As for play calls I just mix in a little bit of everything, stretch plays don't work as well with Payton like with a quicker back like Sanders or Sayers. But when you do run stretch plays or plays way outside use his scissor kick when he receives the ball, and by the time you get to the defender you can make a move and the move will most certainly fool at least one defender.

You can get really creative with Payton because he can do any move in the book and he can do them all well, this is why he is the most fun to use IMO.

I use a bronze center and bronze LT with bull dozer and get Mike Ditka. I am loving running the zone cutbacks. Weak- I Sweeps, and Iso since my linemen single blocks every body in the front 7 except NT.

I can never get those zone cutbacks to work. Is it a run where there's basically a different hole against different defenses or what? I've spent a lot of time in practice mode in both 2k5 and this and never got that run figured out. Do you need a high tier back or a back with cutback to run it?

Walter Peyton is Cheese according the Hitman...

Because I used Peyton effectively using his abilities to his fullest Hitman went on to rave how I am a full blown cheeser and haven't changed from Calvary...

All over an Actual player on the game, it took over a year to find someone who can use Peyton effectively and since I can its labeled cheese since no one else thought of it...

that scissors move is cheese; not payton. his attrbutes suck it dosent justify payton besides the finesse and power, i guess the scissors kick too, but that is cheese.

How could a move they intentionally put into the game knowing what it be cheese?

How about you drop Walter Payton and add Barry Sanders, and see how that works out.

Payton has Leadership over every other back, and I've found blocks develop better for him than the other Gold backs. Could be all in my head, but if it works it works.

I have noticed the same thing, the short running game is much easier with Payton than another back IMO

I've played abit more with Payton and I agree that his leadership helps with blocking -- the only thing though is that I find that it is very inconsistent. A few times you see stellar blocking, but most of the time, blocking is about average, forcing Payton to rely on his relatively poor (in game) running abilities. Again, I may be missing something, but as they made him, I don't think Payton is worth his gold status.

Wrong!! Walter Payton is worth his gold status if you replace him with OJ Simpson.

I agree the blocking can be random with his leadership.

I think they made him pretty accurate except he deserves Stamina Bonus... He averaged 20.85 caries a game and Earl Campbell averaged 21.23.

They should have had the scissor kick just for Payton and have it not be an ability and made him like this:
Leadership
Goal Line Dive
Stamina
Finesse and Power
Durability (This one is questionable because I'm not sure it does much) Iv thought about this one maybe add BT, but that might make him too good... But he was in the Top 3 backs of all time...

CAP-Sweetness

Leadership Bonus
Scissor Kick
Finesse&Power
Cutback Ability
and for fun Breakaway Burst or a more deserving attribute like Clutch or Quick Feet or Branching Tackles, quite possibly Workhorse, or Stamina Bonus

I doubt it -- Workhorse, speedburner, and even stamina are better than durability for a running back.

There's nothing wrong with Walter PAyton.

He just doesnt get the benefit of the magic tapping A button as some of the gold backs and doesnt have the workhorse boost either.

Running with him actually requires some timing. His scissor kick is best used as a set up move. He can give you everything you want, and he is a effective possession receiver when lined up in the slot or split out wide in ace formations.
