The online modes are Ranked Leagues, Player Leagues, and Roster Downloads.
The 2K servers are down so I cannot check them out.
You start your career offline with creating your GM, then you pick your team, and you start on November 3rd, 2008.

You start at the end of the 2008 off-season. Teams begin to make ridiculous trades like BJ Upton to Houston (the Rays made 6 trades in the first off-season on my copy) and you basically have to re-sign your entire team because they say that almost everyone's contract is expired.

are the menus really that bad?
First off, the menu text is very small as it was in MLB 2K8.
The menus are user friendly as there is a tab on the left with everything you need. I don't know what the reviewers meant by the crazy menus.

The visuals look very nice and the gameplay is fun.
When stealing a base, it zooms in with a PIP to show it up close....
The animations are very smooth on the field.

I managed one of my team's spring training games and it's pretty cool- fast moving. I got sidetracked during the game and ended up quitting, but the few innings I watched were pretty entertaining. It might just be how excited I am for baseball season.

You are kinda of scaring me with the radical trade comment. Are there any just insane trades occuring say Jose Reyes for no-namers or leauge average players?
Also are the menus quick in the speed of loading does, it take a while to move from scouting screens to stats, etc.?
kevinorris
January 27th, 2009, 12:21 PM
Loading has been okay with me. I think the text is easier to read thank MLB 2k8.
I tried starting a quick dyansty with the Rays to see what all I would have to do, and I was offered Reed Johnson and Kevin Hart for Carlos Pena. The deals aren't completely crazy, but there are way too many big names being traded.
The player rating system is different than in any other game I've ever played. It's in increments of 5 and for example, Carlos Pena is only a 65 overall. I think Chipper Jones was a 70, K-Rod is a 75.

Here are some trades:
Miguel Tejada for Edgar Renteria and Nate Robertson
Pat Burrell for Bronson Arroyo and Alex Gonzalez
Jacoby Ellsbury for Kenji Johijma and Miguel Batista
Troy Tulowitzki for Bob Howry and Reed Johnson
The menus are very quick to load. Takes about a flash of a second to access stuff.

The simulation screen only tells you future important dates (Amateur Draft, FA Period) For the Offseason so you would have to view the League News page.
Also, when offered a trade you can either:
Accept
Reject
View Offer Details
Think About It
The Simulation Speed is fast you can go through a day a second.

rdogg1026
January 27th, 2009, 12:42 PM
What "skills" are hitters and pitchers rated for and what is the numerical range of those ratings?
Players are rated for:
Hitting
Power
Plate Discipline
Speed
Baserunning
Range
Arm
Glove
Overall
And a Potential rating next to each one
For instance, Justin Upton has a 40 Hitting rating with a 75 potential. The ratings are from 20-80.
Pitching ratings:
Stamina
Control
The pitch types
Overall
So who is the highest rated player? A-Rod? what is his rating?
A-Rod is an 80 which I believe is the max.

When you propose a trade, it does not get accepted or rejected immediately. It takes a day for the team to respond. If the other team does not like your offer, they may counter it or flat out reject it. When putting a player on the trading block you get offers for him occasionally.
Edit: I put Chad Tracy on the block and the first offer I got was:
Tracy for Elarton, Westbrook, and David Dellucci.

I am disappointed with the realism of the game- as far as contracts and frequency of trades goes (the computer makes up some random free agents that are pretty good to start the game and I would like that to be fixed) but after managing a full spring training game with the Rays, the game is enjoyable.
It's fun to watch and control.

Soriano singled and then stole 2nd on the 2nd pitch. You don't have to hit pitch for every pitch - It does the whole at-bat. The game summary text is REALLY small. The AI lineups are normal. No strange decisions after 2 innings.

First thing you do for scouting is you pick how much money you want put into each country. You NEED at least 30 million dollars to scout in Japan. The rest you can invest from 100K-4 Mil. I will wait and see what players they scout for me and what I can do with them. I will get back to you on that.
As for another poster, The simming for the Regular Season shows you the Standings, the Pitching Line, and the player of the game, and Key Injuries.

I am a huge fan of World Wide Soccer Manager, which is a lot like this game except for soccer. Soccer is a much simpler sport with way less statistics, but WSM still manages to have incredible detail with hundreds of ratings for each player which directly affect the game.
Is this true in MLBFOM, or are players a flat rating and that is it. Also, is there a way that the game determines a player's consistency, and do players always reach their potential (like in FIFA) or is it much harder to predict (like in WSM)?

There is a DL. I have one Injury right now (Mets) Daniel Murphy is out with a Strained Right Calf so I placed him on the 15 Day DL since he needs 2 weeks.

Since this is a manager game, can you go out and get drunk and pass out in your car at a stoplight?... Like Larussa?
Also, does this game play at a 'normal' or old timer sped up way?...There should be an option for this...I myself want a game to go at a fairly slow pace....Say at least 20-30 minutes(if not slightly longer) to manage a full game.

So do you think it's possible that the ratings are actually deeper than what we see and that this is the game's way of giving you a rough estimate of a players ability? Simpler games have ratings set in stone. Better ones keep them flexible and hidden. And also, I know that you might not be able to answer this yet, but do you think ratings or actual player stats figure in more when determining player value and production on the field?

2008 Yankees budget is listed at 179.7M.
I don't see a thing for Finances (Tickets, and Merchandise) I don't think a GM is in charge of that.
Yankees have 119 Mil to spend in the off-season it says.

US Southeast
US Northeast

I am more into the managing aspect of these games, like trades, scouting, signing - not going in the game and controlling the game like a Manager does. So I cannot give an honest feel or review for the in-game stuff because I don't care for it as much as the GM duties. I love the GM parts of it. It has all of the things a GM needs to do. The Free Agency blunders, and contracts will be fixed soon.

On the gameplay/entertainment: 9
I'm a baseball fanatic- I write fantasy baseball articles at least twice a week for FantasyPros911.com which is owned by BaseballDigest.com, and I participated in the National Fantasy Baseball Championships every year. To me, I was hoping to play this game to act like a real life GM, but it's not as realistic as I thought it would be with these ridiculous trades and contracts.

Is Citi Field in the game or do the Mets still play at Shea Stadium?
I want to say Citi Field. They don't really mention the name of the stadium anywhere.
How is the manager mode? Do you get to set like double play depth for infield and shift the outfields? Can you call hit and runs or sacrifice bunts?
You can call Hit and Runs, Bunts, Steals.
You can set shifts, and Double Play Depth.

How long does free agency take?
Head Coach was a blast.
Free agency needs to be fixed at this point. There are fictional guys that are better than Prince Fielder.
It takes 3-4 days to hear back about an offer, but probably a week or two (10 minutes).

On the realism of baseball operations: 4
On the gameplay/entertainment: 9
I'm a baseball fanatic- I write fantasy baseball articles at least twice a week for FantasyPros911.com which is owned by BaseballDigest.com, and I participated in the National Fantasy Baseball Championships every year. To me, I was hoping to play this game to act like a real life GM, but it's not as realistic as I thought it would be with these ridiculous trades and contracts.
So without the ridiculous trades and contracts what would your rating be on the realism of baseball operations?

All of the big name players got re-signed in my first season (I'm playing opening day right now). Most of the free agents were asking for one year deals and signed within the first week, there were few remaining after that.

A: Alex Rodriguez has been playing great and I'm sure he will continue his high level of play.
B: Alex Rodriguez has really been playing well and hopefully he can keep his current hot streak going.
C: Alex Rodriguez has been playing a little over his head lately, it will be very difficult for him to keep up his current hot streak.

The BIG time International players have a 30-40 Overall with Potential from 60-80. I sent them to AA. (I am not really involved in this Franchise though)

1. Can you create new teams or are you limited to current MLB teams?
2. Do the players have no-trade clauses?
3. Are players' hometowns, colleges and/or high schools listed?
4. Are players/coaches ever ejected, suspended or fined?
5. Is there an All Star Game?
6. What awards are given out during and at the end of the season?
7. Does weather play a factor in games? (i.e. wind direction, rainouts, etc)
8. Do players have personalities that affect things like contract negotiations, team chemistry and ejections/suspensions?
9. Do you have control over the physical appearance of players?

-I can't tell exactly, but I wouldn't be surprised if it did.
8. Do players have personalities that affect things like contract negotiations, team chemistry and ejections/suspensions?

ok...so let me get this right....its a one season deal online for leagues? ITs not like a league where you can keep going multiple seasons, goto the offseason, trade etc...like the single player but with human gms?
I do not know yet. No leagues have started yet.

People who have been answering questions: What version are you using?
Anyone using the PC version: Any additional info you'd like to add about using the PC version?
I've preordered the PC one but I'm torn between that and Xbox. Is the Roster update available currently for PC users as well?

The fantasy draft only consists of 25 rounds. The computer drafts the remaining rosters for you, in other words, your entire farm system. I'm not very pleased about this.
The nice thing about prospects is that it is fairly detailed in that it tells you their current and potential rating for each category so you can see if you're going after a power hitter, finesse pitcher, etc. I was glad to see this instead of just an overall projection, but having no idea what kind of player he is.

Thanks for all the answers and info...I'm really excited about this game. Here are a couple of questions in concerns to the minors:
Are you allowed to control all the lineups and rotations of every level in the minors?
Can you play out the games in the minors like you do in the majors?
Does it have the Rule IV draft for the minors? I know it has the rule IV for majors; but there is a minor league component to the real-life winter meetings.
Thanks!

Yes you play the minors games.

I thought I read somewhere that they were going to have an update to the rosters so contracts would be accurate and the correct players would be on their respective teams.
Right now people are saying half their team is disappearing, when actually everyone that they thought were signed longer has had their contract up and left without them knowing...
Is this true or no?

Bigmentz07

But are the roster updates only what they were before major free agents signed? AKA Sabathia still a free agent testing the waters?
Also, why are all the length of contract one year (and expiring before you play a game!). Ryan Ludwick, skip schuemaker and rick ankiel all were gone before i played a game with the cardinals!?

Right now there is a tentative plan to release 3 roster updates:
Released SOON: rosters (and the game's "start date") current as of Jan. 20
Released last week of February: rosters & start date current as of Feb. 15 (start of Spring Training)
Released second/third week of April: rosters & start date current as of Apr. 6 (Opening Day)
As you can imagine, there are lots of variables, so this is subject to change, but it is the current plan. If not much happens in the next few weeks (no major trades; FA like Manny, Dunn, Abreu still unsigned, etc.), then there might only be the April update. Due to the nature of the game, there won't be any midseason updates.

Ok so they have waivers which is great. My other question was if you can just send a guy down to the minors then call him back up again the next day? I hope they have some way of restricting player movement or else you don't even need a 40 man roster!?!

First straight answer I got. Your the man rdogg. So we'd all have to agree that playing a fantasy draft mode would be the best way to get anything out of the game immediately if you normally wanted to play with the "real" rosters. Thanks for the tip.

I've played baseball sims for years on the PC and what I don't understand is that there are "reserves" on the extended roster screen that aren't either on my MLB or Minor League rosters. In fact, each level of the minors have a list of "reserves". Are these player in limbo? Do they develop? What's the point of reserves?

Reserves should be playing on one of your rosters. Check AAA, AA, and A to make sure. I never saw a player listed who wasn't playing somewhere.
