View Full Version : FOM: Your first moves as a GM

Upon creating my GM I selected the Orioles to be his team of leadership, as I am a die hard fan. The owner allows for a $92 million dollar budget, as the Orioles are a middle-market team. I knew coming in that my success was going to be based on my ability to restructure the shaky (understatement) Orioles pitching staff. Coming in, I hoped that Guthrie would resemble an ace in some ways, but wasn't surprised at all to see that he wasn't a even shell of one. All pitchers that followed Guthrie on the default roster were even worse, which was not unexpected. Cabrera, Olson (has since been traded for Pie), Liz, Bass, Albers, and Waters lack control and stamina. The default bullpen does have some nice beginning pieces in Sherrill (good trade bait), Jim Johnson, Danys Baez, and Chris Ray. The default lineup is very solid. Roberts is one of the best leadoff hitters in the game. Mora is a sufficient 2 slot hitter. Markakis is a stud. Huff is a perfect 4. Jones is a developing superstar. Add Luke Scott in that mix and you have yourself an offense. When Wieters arrives....its all over.

My moves, offensively:

1. Extend Markakis: He just signed a 6/66 contract in real life, and I offered him a 7/70 deal on the game which he happily accepted.

2. Extend Roberts: He asked for a 4/20 on the game. Although this is somewhat unrealistic, I offered it in order to save money; he accepted.

3. Extend Jones: Another unrealistic, yet money smart deal. 5/10.

4. Add Dmitri Young: I was looking for a slugging first baseman since I let Millar (Friese) go. Radhames Liz and Dennis Sarfate for Young.

5. Add David Eckstein: I was looking for a stopgap SS. Ramon Hernandez shipped to AZ for Eckstein and a prospect reliever; I initially asked for Steven Drew, by was declined.

6: Add Eliezer Alfonzo: Solid stopgap catcher while I wait for Wieters.

1. Roberts
2. Mora
3. Markakis
4. Huff
5. Young
6. Jones
7. Montanez
8. Eckstein
9. Alfonzo

My moves, for the staff:

Cash smart moves that allowed me to improve my offense allowed me to spend a lot of money on the pitching staff. I made a huge, albeit unrealistic, splash!

1. Sign CC Sabathia, 6/166. Huge deal out of Baltimore, the biggest by almost 100 million! This sure makes for a beautiful start to the staff.

2. Sign young prospect type pitchers (2). Can't recall their names, but they had solid ratings in the necessary statistical categories.

3. Sign solid relievers in the rule 5 draft; I got 2 efficient relievers this way, both of whom appear ready to help the cause in the coming season.

1. Sabathia
2. Guthrie
3. Albers (3, 4 and 5 could be replaced by any of the young pitchers in the organization throughout year)
4. Prospect #1
5. Prospect #2

Bullpen:
Headed by Chris Ray, George Sherrill, Randor Bierd (has been traded in real life, to Red Sox), Troy Patton, and Jamie Walker (not in MLBPA)

Thoughts / comments, your stories?

Not a bad start, but the game is definitely unrealistic in that the current teams of superstars almost automatically bid large and win their current players. Who in real life accepts an offer immediately? Teixeira stayed with LAA, CC with the Brew Crew, Manny with the Dodgers, etc.

That said Roberts signing with you for 4 years at $5 mil a year!? He'll be seeking HUGE money as he's one of the premier 2nd baseman in the MLB. My guess is more like 6 years at $12-15 / year is more like what he'll get...

Like the game so far, but there are major flaws in it still...

I saw the same thing, Chippper Jones, CC Sabathia, and Ben Sheets were the only really big free agents that didn't stay with their current team

I took over the White Sox. Not goin real in depth with this but since it makes Thome a FA and i dont wanna pay over 20mil for him since he's like 260 years old, i made an arbitration offer that i knew he would decline. Then instead I offered in for Texiera and got him signed. A much better use of 20 somethin million i would say.... :)

Roberts won't get huge money in real life. He is 31. The Orioles offered him a 3/30 extension, which he declined. He said that he wants four years. If I was the Orioles I would go 4/44, but nothing more.

Started with the Mariners, signed Bedard (3 year 5.8 per year, no bonus) and Beltre (5 years, 11 per year, no bonus), Ibanez went to teh indians (netting me a 1st round pick), went to arbitration with Jeremy Reed and Felix Hernandez (won both). Only made small FA signings like Scott Hatteberg, Nick Punto (I need someone to challenge that bum Bettancourt!), Brad Penny and some bullpen arms (Todd Coffey).

Had a great rule five draft with Mat Gamel, Colt Morton, Tony Abreu, Jared Burton and this guy named Ryan Dent from the Dodgers (fans were disappointed that they let him go)

Once the season has started I have picked up Matt Capps and Jon Broxton on waivers (we have a pretty sweet bullpen with Burton, Putz, Broxton, Capps, O'Flaherty, Dent, etc.) so there is some promise there. I have been trying to dump Miguel Batista but I can't. I can't send him to the minors and no one will tarde for him so I guess release is teh only option at this point.

I have since traded Aubrey Huff to the Royals for Mike Jacobs. Huff's numbers had significantly decreased after spring training, and I needed more power in my lineup. Jacobs had 3 home runs in his first game as an Oriole.

Ok so maybe the length was exaggerated, but my point was the game shouldn't allow a top 5 2nd baseman go for that cheap.

Yeah I agree 100%. Definitely some money issues in this game. In my career, Teixiera signed with the Giants for 9/219! Nuts!

My team is the Giants.
I brought back almost all my young talent and let Aurilia and Vizquel go as the real Giants did.
I signed Chone Figgins to be my 3B and Vlad Guerrero as my big bat.
I think Manny signed with the Yankees. Other big name FA's that hadn't signed with their original teams were Ben Sheets, John Lackey, Chipper Jones.

Lincecum went out in the first spring training game after pitching 3 innings with a rib cage injury and he's out up to 3 weeks

Vlad is 32 yrs old and wanted 8 yrs at 18.5 million per
I had made him numerous offers before he finally caved and signed at 8 yrs 24 million per.
I was desperate for a bat and it was almost spring training.

The key in this game is like Billy Beane says...sign young cheap talent and fill it in with some super high powered studs when you can.
