Upon creating my GM I selected the Orioles to be his team of leadership, as I am a die hard fan. The owner allows for a $92 million dollar budget, as the Orioles are a middle-market team. I knew coming in that my success was going to be based on my ability to restructure the shaky (understatement) Orioles pitching staff. Coming in, I hoped that Guthrie would resemble an ace in some ways, but wasn't surprised at all to see that he wasn't a even shell of one. All pitchers that followed Guthrie on the default roster were even worse, which was not unexpected. Cabrera, Olson (has since been traded for Pie), Liz, Bass, Albers, and Waters lack control and stamina. The default bullpen does have some nice beginning pieces in Sherrill (good trade bait), Jim Johnson, Danys Baez, and Chris Ray. The default lineup is very solid. Roberts is one of the best leadoff hitters in the game. Mora is a sufficient 2 slot hitter. Markakis is a stud. Huff is a perfect 4. Jones is a developing superstar. Add Luke Scott in that mix and you have yourself an offense. When Wieters arrives....its all over.
My moves, offensively:
1. Extend Markakis: He just signed a 6/66 contract in real life, and I offered him a 7/70 deal on the game which he happily accepted.
2. Extend Roberts: He asked for a 4/20 on the game. Although this is somewhat unrealistic, I offered it in order to save money; he accepted.
3. Extend Jones: Another unrealistic, yet money smart deal. 5/10.
4. Add Dmitri Young: I was looking for a slugging first baseman since I let Millar (Friese) go. Radhames Liz and Dennis Sarfate for Young.
5. Add David Eckstein: I was looking for a stopgap SS. Ramon Hernandez shipped to AZ for Eckstein and a prospect reliever; I initially asked for Steven Drew, by was declined.
6: Add Eliezer Alfonzo: Solid stopgap catcher while I wait for Wieters.
1. Roberts
2. Mora
3. Markakis
4. Huff
5. Young
6. Jones
7. Montanez
8. Eckstein
9. Alfonzo
My moves, for the staff:
Cash smart moves that allowed me to improve my offense allowed me to spend a lot of money on the pitching staff. I made a huge, albeit unrealistic, splash!
1. Sign CC Sabathia, 6/166. Huge deal out of Baltimore, the biggest by almost 100 million! This sure makes for a beautiful start to the staff.
2. Sign young prospect type pitchers (2). Can't recall their names, but they had solid ratings in the necessary statistical categories.
3. Sign solid relievers in the rule 5 draft; I got 2 efficient relievers this way, both of whom appear ready to help the cause in the coming season.
1. Sabathia
2. Guthrie
3. Albers (3, 4 and 5 could be replaced by any of the young pitchers in the organization throughout year)
4. Prospect #1
5. Prospect #2
Bullpen:
Headed by Chris Ray, George Sherrill, Randor Bierd (has been traded in real life, to Red Sox), Troy Patton, and Jamie Walker (not in MLBPA)
