Fuentes Comes To Anaheim

New General Manager NEPatriot777 had a bunch of work to do when this offseason began. He had Francisco Rodriguez, Mark Teixeira, Garrett Anderson, and Jon Garland all leaving for free agency. After a long wait with a big offer on the table, Mark Texeira signed with the New York Yankees. During this period the Angels also watched the single season saves record holder, Francisco Rodriguez, also go to New York....The New York Mets that is. To address the loss of Rodriguez, the Angels brought in lefty closer Brian Fuentes. Fuentes brings alot to the table and is a good replacement to Rodriguez. Many thought that the closer position would be a battle between the rookie sensation Jose Arredondo and the veteran Angel Scott Shields. But the acquisition of Fuentes now puts them in a SU role, which only makes the bullpen better. Fuentes is a 3 time All-Star who had 30 saves in 34 opportunities last year with a 2.73 ERA

Garland leaves the Angels

Jon Garland would be the next to go out of the Angels free agents. Garland signed with the Arizona D-Backs on a 1yr 6.25 million dollar deal. There is also an option year for 2010 that would pay Garland up to 10 million. The Angels now officially will have a battle for that number 5 spot on the rotation. Likely candidates are Dustin Moseley, Nick Adenhart, Shane Loux, and Anthony Ortega.

Abreu Joins Angels!

Bobby Abreu signed with the Angels earlier this week making a dull Angels offseason have a little more jump in it. Angel fans were wondering how the team would address the loss of Mark Teixeira, and although its not Teixeira, Abreu will be welcomed nicely. He fits perfectly in manager Mike Scioscia's style of play. A guy who works the count, gets on base, has some speed, and has a good amount of pop to go with it. Angels fans were very happy with the signing and at the price who wouldnt? The Angels inked him to a 1 year deal for 5 mil. A steal in many peoples eyes. Abreu will join a lineup that needed the power Abreu brings to the table.

Santana, Angels Reach Extension

Feb. 14, 2009- Today the Angels made a big move within the organization. They signed RHP Ervin Santana to a 4 year extension avoiding arbitration. The deal is believed to worth up to about 30 million dollars. Santana, 27, was an all-star for the first time in his career last season. He went 16-7 with a 3.49 ERA. In 2006 he showed Angel fans what he could do going 16-8 with a 4.28 ERA, but in 2007 he struggled mightily going 7-14 while posting a 5.76 ERA, and was later sent down to triple A. Many believe this to be a good signing, but for Angel fans they hope to see the Santana of 2008 and not 2007.

Can The Angels Fly To Heaven?

http://www.exemplarinc.com/images/Athletic%20page/destinationalbum/images/Angels_02_jpg.jpg

This year will be the 7th year baseball will be played since the Angels won the World Series in 2002. The question buzzing around Anaheim is, can they do it again? After winning their 7th AL West title last year, they were defeated, again, by the Boston Red Sox in the playoffs. Many people felt that with the acquisition of Mark Teixeira at the trade deadline would get them over the hump in the playoffs. Unfortunately that didnt work out for them. Now Teixeira is a New York Yankee and many felt that that ended all hopes for the Angels. But in this offseason with the acquisition of Bobby Abreu the Angels have found new hopes. A 3-4-5 of Abreu, Guerrero, and Hunter could be very dominating in 2009.
http://nickbon.com/Bobby%20Abreu.jpg
How big of a factor will Abreu be?

Also the Angels still have one of the deepest pitching staffs in baseball. Despite the loss of star closer Fransisco Rodriguez, and starter Jon Garland, the Angels have addressed these needs. They signed closer Brian Fuentes and plan addressing the loss of Garland by using someone within the organization. Dustin Moseley, Nick Adenhart, Shane Loux, and Anthony Ortega are likely candidates. The pressure on these kids is not that strong either, because injured pitcher Kelvim Escobar plans on being ready by midseason, if not earlier. So with Lackey, Santana, Saunders, Weaver, and Escobar/kids mentioned above, the Angels will have a strong starting 5 leading into one of the most dominating bullpens in the game. Darren Oliver, Kevin Jepsen, Scott Shields, Jose Arredondo, and Brian Fuentes rounds out your bullpen as of now.
http://cache.daylife.com/imageserve/0h1j7Do8QU8u5/610x.jpg
Arredondo was dominating in his rookie season, can he follow it up strong in 2009?

All in all the Angels look like a very well rounded team. They are definately poised to finally get over that hump in the playoffs and try and grab onto that second world series title.

I love this time of year. April, is my favorite however. I love this time, because MLB 2K is always about to come out, baseball season starts for our school, and Spring Training in the MLB starts. Everyone on here is usually all hyped for the game (We got shut down last year, but this year truely looks great) and its fun to all talk about the game.

Than when it comes out, is the best week of the year, besides the Christmas-New Years Eve week.

Angels to start talks on an extension for Lackey?

Tempe, AZ Feb. 18, 2009
Today we learned from new GM NEPatriot777 that the Angels are going to open up talks on an extension for ace John Lackey. Lackey, 30, debuted in 2002 and won game 7 of the World Series as a rookie. In 2007 he had a sensational year going 19-9 with a 3.01 ERA. He had 179 strikeouts in 224 innings. In 2008 he was injured for the first part of the season, but came back strong going 12-5 with a 3.75 ERA. Lackey would no doubt be the premier starter available in the upcoming free agent class. But he has already shown interest in wanting to stay with the Angels, and now it looks like the Angels are going to try and repay the favor. GM NEPatriot777 stated, "I would love to wrap John up soon, and were going to start talks very quickly. We have a little over a month before the start of the season and i think that that is enough time to get this deal worked out". If the Angels can get Lackey his extension, they would have a solid 4 starters set for a while. Lackey, Santana, Saunders, and Weaver would be a great 4 guys to have locked up. This would definately keep them premier players in the playoffs for many more years.

Player Profile: Bobby Abreu
http://mlb.mlb.com/images/players/mugshot/ph_110029.jpg

Bobby Abreu was signed by the Astros as an amateur free agent in 1990. In 1998 he signed with the Phillies, thus starting a great career. In 2004 he finally got his first all-star berth after a great run with the Phillies. In July 2006 Abreu was traded to the New York Yankees for minor league shortstop C.J. Henry (a 2005 first-round draft pick), left-hander Matt Smith (a seven-year minor league veteran), catcher Jesus Sanchez, and right-hander Carlos Monasterios. After putting up 2 good seasons with the Yankees he went to the free agent market in 2009. The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim signed him on a 1 yr 5 mil deal. One of the steals this offseason. Abreu has a lifetime average of .300 with 241 HR 1084 RBI and 318 SB. He plans on doing great things with the Angels and hopes to take home a world series title. Awards for Abreu include: 2004 NL Silver Slugger (OF), 2004 & 2005 NL All Star, 2005 NL Gold Glove (OF)

Today ESPN reporter, Marshall Allman sat down with Angels GM, Preston to do a quick interview. In this interview they talk about the off season and upcoming season. Here is what the GM Preston had to say about his team:

http://angels.mlb.com/ana/images/community/foundation_logo_250x300.gif

Marshall: "Thanks for coming and joining us for another exclusive Marshall and Preston in the Afternoon interview."

GM Preston: "No problem, anytime."

Marshall: "This year it seems like you guys have been very busy in the off season. Can you walk me through what you wanted to accomplish in the off season and what you have done to accomplish such things?"

GM Preston: "Well yes, it has been a very busy off season for us. We lost some really good players that we though would be very hard to replace. I feel that we have addressed each area very strongly. I feel that with the additions of Brian Fuentes and Bobby Abreu we can be a World Series contenders. Fuentes does a good job to replace K-Rod. Abreu is that middle of the order bat that is going to help out Vlad a lot this season."

Marshall: "Did you feel that letting K-Rod go was possibly the wrong thing to do? Considering he just came off of a record year with 63 saves."

GM Preston: "No not at all. K-Rod wanted to start negotiations with us at a really high price. We didn't feel that it was necessary to spend that much money to bring him back to the team with an already solid bullpen. We had Arredondo and Shields ready to take over his role. It just worked out very nicely that Brian Fuentes had great interest in coming to our organization. I do wish the best of luck to Frankie, but as a team we are moving on."

Marshall: "Do you feel that Brian Fuentes is a player that is capable of filling Rodriguez's shoes?"

GM Preston: "Absolutely. He is a solid lefty reliever, who has always been a dominant pitcher during his whole MLB career. I don't think people give him enough credit for what he has done during his career in Colorado. He was pitching in an especially hitter's friendly ballpark. Plus, with the move toward home, I think he will adjust very nicely hear in Anaheim. I look for him to have a very good season."

Marshall: "With Teixeira gone, is Morales a long term answer or just a short term answer to a first baseman?"

GM Preston: "Right now, I would say ask me after the first season. This is his first chance to prove himself after a full season. Now, if he gets injured or doesn't play well at all, then we might think about making a move at the deadline. But from what I have seen, i think he should do fine."

GM Preston: "So to answer your question, I would say long term as of right now."

Marshall: "As an organization do you have anything else planned?"

GM Preston: "Well as of right now, we are unsure on how we are going to full fill our number 5 spot our rotation. We have been in talks with Pedro Martinez about possibly inking a deal to come pitch for us. We don't want it to be a too long of a contract as wee hope to have Kelvim (Escobar) back by mid season. We do feel that Pedro would really enhance our rotation."

Marshall: "Alright that's all the time we have for right now."

GM Preston: good luck with everything on the show!"

Angels Report: Pedro to Angels?

Feb. 27, 2009 Tempe AZ
As the Angels are underway in spring training they still have one big concern. Whos going to be their number 5 starter? They figured the would fill this hole by using a youngster, but in a short interview GM Preston told us differently. "Well from what we have seen, we really want to win this year and we dont want to rush any of our kids. Right now were in serious negotiations for free agent pitcher Pedro Martinez. We believe we are nearing a deal, and expect to have an answer by March 3. We believe we have made a good offer to bring the veteran to the team." This would be a huge move that would most likely give the Angels one of the most lethal starting 5 in the Majors. A starting 5 of Lackey, Santana, Saunders, Weaver, and Martinez could be the rotation that will lead the Angels to their 2nd World Series win. Sources believe that deal is a 1 yr contract but they arent sure on the amount of cash. We will try and keep you updated as soon as we find out.

Anaheim CA,
The report out of Anaheim as the Angels are preparing for opening day is that SP Pedro Martinez has agreed to a 1yr 8 million dollar deal. This move gives the Halos a strong starting 5 in the rotation. Angels fans everywhere are ready to make him feel at home. It was a bittersweet day in Anaheim as the Angels rallied down 5-2 to come back and win it 6-5. Kendry Morales was the difference maker as he went 3-4 with the game tying homer in the 8th. Then Gary Matthews Jr. won the game in the 9th with a 2 out single that brought home Figgins. The bad news unfortunately takes the cake here. Vladimir Guerrero tore his ACL sliding into second base after his 2nd AB. He will be out for at least 150 days and will miss most of the season. Angels GM Ross said that he wasnt sure what the team planned on doing to address the loss of their biggest power threat. He mentioned a possible trade, but also said they might stick with the farm system and see what that brings them. The Angels will finish this series Sunday for the final game of the series. Expect GM Ross to call up Brandon Wood to play DH on the upcoming game.

It was another thrilling game at the Big A where the Angels pulled the sweep of their division rival A's. It was a battle throughout the game, and there were way to many hits allowed by both teams. But in the 11th the Angels got just enough as Kendry Morales was the hero for the 3rd day in a row. This time roping a double over the head of Holliday that brought home Rivera. The Angels play Boston tommorow as Pedro Martinez makes his Angels debut.

The Angels went at it with the team that knocked them out of the playoffs again. Although it was an early, regular season game it had the intensity of a playoff game. The two teams went back and forth, but it was the Angels who got the last laugh thanks to Juan Rivera. He was hitting liners all night and he brought home the winning run for the Angels. Pedro Martinez made his Angels debut and did pretty good. Despite giving up 4 runs, 1 was unearned and another could have been but was ruled a hit. The Angels were happy with how he played and hope he can win throughout the season. They play 2 more against the Sox, with Lackey and Santana going.

The Angels win streak was snapped tonight as the Red Sox won 6-3. It was a horrible night for the Angels as John Lackey was rocked as he could only go 5 and a third innings allowing 10 hits and 5 runs. To go on with the horrible night, another Angel Outfield was injured as Torii Hunter left the game with a hurt back. He was then placed on the 15 day DL with back spasms. The Angels hope to get back on track next game with Ervin Santana taking the mound for his second start.

The long ball came into play tonight as Gary Matthews Jr., and Mike Napoli each clubbed 2 homers, while Morales also hit 1. The Angels almost tripled their home run total on the year tonight as the ball carried alot better than in Angel Stadium. Next up they hope that Jered Weaver can be solid again as they go for that 7-2 record.

Chone Figgins out of Anaheim?

http://cacophonycafe.files.wordpress.com/2007/08/capt846ea39d3aa24221ab9200b26e5fdf09athletics_ange ls_baseball_ans108.jpg

Anaheim, CA
The Report out Anaheim is that speedster Chone Figgins could be sent out. Just 2 days ago there was a report that Figgins was placed on the trade block, and now the report is that they have numerous offers. According to sources, the Indians may have offered Johnny Peralta but when talking to GM Preston Ross he refused to comment on it. If indeed Figgins is on the block, the Angels will probably be looking to acquire a power infielder to help bolster the lineup that is without its two best players(Hunter and Guerrero). It would make sense that the Angels would trade Figgins who is in his contract year. The Angels have depth behind him in Brandon Wood, Maicer Itzuris, and Erick Aybar who can all play 3rd base. We will try to keep you as updated as possible.

The recent of rumors of Chone Figgins being traded might become a reality if the Angels cant get any offense. Figgins, the leadoff man, went 0-4 and didnt help the team at all tonight. This was a very frustrating night for the Angels and they hope to bounce back next game with Pedro Martinez on the mound.

Erick Aybar's 2 run single in the 6th proved to be the game winner as the Angels won by only 2. Brian Fuentes grabbed the save despite giving up a leadoff homer to Justin Morneau to start the 9th. Chone Figgins won tonights game in the 9th by hitting line drive to center that just barely dropped in below Gomez. Joe Saunders pitched great until he got into trouble in the 5th and allowed 3 runs to come in and tie the score, none of which were earned though. After pitching a scoreless 6th Kevin Jepsen, Scott Shields, and Brian Fuentes shut the Twins down allowing only 1 hit in the last 3 innings. Figgins dealt, Dye comes to Halos!

http://www.bestsportsphotos.com/images/PF/05FigginsChone01.jpg

Anaheim CA
In whats been a wild week of recent rumors about Chone Figgins being traded have come to a reality. On their off day after taking the series against the Twins, the Angels reached an agreement with the Chicago White Sox to send Chone Figgins, Robb Quinlan, and Matt Brown to the South Side for Jermaine Dye. Dye will replace an injured Vlad Guerrero who is out for the season. When Torii Hunter returns from his injury the Angel outfield will be Abreu, Hunter, Dye. A scary thought for any opposing team. At the end of the season the Angels will decide to resign either Guerrero or Abreu and the outfield should stay very similar. The trade allows Brandon Wood to step into a full time job at 3B, where the Angels have plenty of depth. They have Maicer Itzuris, Freddy Sandoval, and Sean Rodriguez who can all play third if needed. The White Sox receive a top of the order 3B that they needed, a good utility man in Robb Quinlan, and Matt Brown a mid level prospect that didn't look to have strong future in Anaheim. The Angels add much, much needed power to a lineup that sits 14th in the league in Home Runs. A deal of Chone Figgins and Jermaine Dye almost fell through earlier in the winter but old GM Tony Reagins was unable to pull it off. New GM Preston Ross was able to speak with us and had some things to say about the trade. "I feel that it is a great trade, and when the White Sox called us up about Figgy we were immediately listening. I knew that Jermaine had almost come to us earlier and I was hoping that we could land him. Reagins felt that the team didn't need him at the time, but right now i felt that we needed his presence in our lineup. Figgy will be greatly missed but Brandon(Wood) can now start at third for us. Plus with Figgins contract up i was unsure on how things would work." When asked about the Indians trade he said, "Yes the Indians did make contact with us and we were getting close to a deal for Johnny Peralta. But when the White Sox got involved we realized that it wasn't the best offer on the table. In the end I believe this was the better move for us as a team to win." The Angels will have a very potent lineup now with an already great pitching staff. Look out for them to make a huge run toward a World Series this year.

This was an unbelievable game for the Angels as they captured their 11th win. Pedro Martinez took the mound but struggled through the game. He allowed 3 runs to come across, but gave up 14 hits. On the other side, Dontrelle Willis looked like the Dontrelle of old as he pitched 8 scoreless innings against the Angels. But when he came out into the 9th, he struggled. The Angels gave many of their guys a day off, including Mike Napoli, Brandon Wood, Juan Rivera, and Howie Kendrick. To have Kendrick sit they had to call up Sean Rodriguez, a prospect that had a short stint with the Angels in 2008. He had been 0-4 on the night before his last AB. In the 9th Gary Matthews Jr. flew out, putting Dontrelle only 2 outs away from a complete game shutout. But then Manager Mike Scoscia decided to not let this one slip away. He pinch hit Brandon Wood who singled. Then he pinch hit Mike Napoli, and after working the count to 3-1, BOOM! Home Run! 3-2. That would end Dontrelle's night and in came Fernando Rodney. Rodney threw a first pitch fastball to Reggie Willits who roped it into left. Tying run on, winning run up. Erick Aybar took the first pitch changeup for a strike. Next pitch Aybar ropes a basehit into center. Now its Sean Rodriguez, just called up to sit the bench and start on rest days. Rodriguez took the first pitch he saw, a 99 mph fastball, and cranked it into center. A Walk Off 3 run shot for the kid! We talked to him afterword. "Wow! What a game huh?! I can't believe that that just happened." When asked how it felt he said, "Oh its the greatest feeling you can get. The rush of knowing that you just won the game for your team, wow I'm shocked. All i was trying to do was get a basehit so Jermaine could come up for a chance to win it. I got a fastball and just swung and hit it as hard as i could." After this, the Angels are flying high and have an 11-4 record. John Lackey faces Justin Verlander in the final game of the series next.

The Angels looked terrible tonight as they were shut down by the Orioles. An error in the first followed by a homer ended up killing them as they lost 3-1. The offense didn't show up for this short series as they Angels only scored 3 runs in the 2 games. John Lackey was let down again by his offense after a great performance. He is now 1-3 on the year. Manager Mike Scoscia was very dissapointed after the game. "We just didn't play tonight. The guys looked out of it at the plate. They had plenty of opportunities but just couldn't come through. They better get their act together because were heading to New York tonight to play a tough Yankee ballclub. That's all i have to say." On the bright side, Torii Hunter could join the lineup as soon as tommorow!

The Angels had their first official slugfest tonight as they had 30 hits in an 11 inning thriller against the Yankees! An official record for the team. Unfortunately, the Yankees did the same to them getting 25 hits. After comeback after comeback by the Angels, including a 2 out rally of back to back homers off Mariano Rivera. The Yankees won it in the 11th. Alex Rodriguez brought home the winnning run with 1st and 3rd and no out. But no he didn't drive the run home with a hit or homer, Alex Rodriguez, in the midst of a slugfest, brought home the winning run on a SQUEEZE! Very ironic if you think about it. The Angels do have a bright spot though. After a couple games with Salt Lake, Torii Hunter will join the team tommorow!

It was a tough game for the Angels as they battled but could not win. Joe Saunders had a gutty performance but fell short and lost his first game of the season. Derek Jeter has been unstoppable this series and the Angels cant find an answer for him. Torii Hunter made his return as he went 2-4. Sean Rodriguez got his second start to give Howie Kendrick the day off and he went nuts. Last start he hit a walk-off 3 run shot. This time he went 2-4 with 3 RBI including a double, and another homer! He is definately fighting for a starting job right now. Next the Angels send Jered Weaver to the mound in search of breaking that losing streak.

It was a wild night in New York as the Yankees beat the Angels 6-5 in 10 innings. The pitching match-up was the one to see as CC went against Pedro. They both battled and were pretty even the entire game. Each allowed 4 ER and each got no decision. The battle raged as the Yankees took the lead with a 3 run 7th. But Jermaine Dye went yard to answer the call in the 8th. This lead to a battle that would go into extras. In the bottom of the 10th with 1 down, Xavier Nady took a curveball by shields and blasted it into the night. This would give the Yankees the win on the night and in the series. You can, and its pretty easy. Just use 2KReelmaker, and use the "Save" tool. Save As Screenshot. Than load it after, and when you exit it should ask if you want to upload to 2Kserver. Choose Yes. Than get on your linked 2KSports.com profile page, and it should show up in your sig.

It was a tough night for the Angels as they couldn't find enough offense to win. David Percey had his best start of the season for the Jays as he went 8 innings and only allowed 1 run. That 1 run, was the only bright spot of the night for the Angels, as Jermaine Dye hit another home run giving him 6 now, the new club leader. The Angels finish this short 2 game series against the Blue Jays facing their ace, Roy Halladay.

Sean Rodriguez. Remember this name, because this kid is the real deal. Two times this year hes come up to the plate and won the game for the Angels. He has only played in 4 games and twice he won the game. This is the future second baseman for the Angels, don't be surprised if Howie Kendrick gets dealt later on in the future. Tonight Rodriguez was the hero, but it was a team effort. With 2 outs in the 9th Jermaine Dye hit a triple to score 1 making it 9-8. Matthews Jr then hit a single to tie it. Then pinch hitting for Morgan Puffer, Sean Rodriguez laced a hit to win the game. The Angels now face the Kansas City Royals next.

The Angels showed what they could do on their best of nights tonight. The offense exploded hitting 4 home runs, all produced by the 4, 5, 6 hitters of the lineup. Pedro Martinez had a great outing again going all the way for a complete game. His only run was unearned which will lower his ERA even more. As if it couldn't get worse for the Royals, starter Luke Hochevar, who was 4-0 coming into the game, got hurt in the first inning. He let the leadoff man aboard and then the next batter hit him in the face. The new pitcher allowed that run to score which gave Hochevar his first loss of the season. The Angels face Gil Meche next with Lackey on the mound.

What a game for the Angels! Another comeback in the 9th leads them to victory. And yes, its another new face to be the hero. Brandon Wood was all over the ball today as he went 4-5 and smashed in the winning run in the bottom of the 9th. The Angels were down to their last out and smacked in 3 straight hits to win the game. All 4 of Woods hits were to right field. The Angels saved starter John Lackey from losing as he had a shaky outing and went 5.2 innings with 12 hits and 4 runs given up. The Angels will try to sweep this red hot Royals team next.

Matthews Jr. Out of Anaheim?

In recent reports, Gary Matthews Jr. has demanded more playing time, or wants to be traded. He felt that his role on the team isn't important enough. The Angels might have a hard time trading him, due to the fact that he has a gigantic contract. There have been reports that they have spoken to the Reds, but nothing has come through yet. Although today GM Ross told us that they were taking phone calls for him, in hopes to give him what he wants...more playing time.

Weaver sent down, Adenhart called up!

Report out of Anaheim is that the Angels sent down 4th starter Jered Weaver. 1 night after allowing 8 runs in 4 innings against the Red Sox, manager Mike Scoscia told him to go to Salt Lake to work on his command. "His command hasn't been where we've wanted it to be the past couple starts. We want him to go down and work on a couple things." Indeed Weaver has struggled allowing 16 ER in his past 2 starts. Getting the call is young potential star, Nick Adenhart. Despite his struggles last year, this year Adenhart was impressive in spring training, and is 4-1 with a 1.73 ERA in the minors. Scoscia has been really impressed with what he has seen. "Nick is throwing the ball very well right now, and if anyone was to take a spot in this rotation, its him. He's been working hard and with Weaver's struggles, we decided to give him the call. We will see how it works out. Adenhart is expected to make his first start right after Pedro pitches tonight against the Sox. It will be against Texas in Arlington. The Rangers are right on the Angels heels in the division and it should be a very good game.

What a thriller for the Angels tonight! Bobby Abreu was the hero for the first time this year with a walk off 3 run shot in the 11th to win it for the Angels. It was a neck and neck game the entire way, until Josh Bard had a 2 RBI single against Scott Shields. The Angels with their never say die attitude fought back in the 11th to make it 5-4. Then on a first pitch fastball by Okajima, Abreu launched it into the rocks in left center. Nick Adenhart makes his debut this year tommorow against the Rangers.

John Lackey did not have his stuff tonight as he only lasted 4 innings against this tough Rangers offense. The entire Angel staff didnt do great tonight as they let up 10 runs. The defense was horrible as well giving up 4 errors, a season high. The only good things were that Bobby Abreu hit another home run, and Torii Hunter followed 2 batters later with a blast of his own. Halos Top Prospect Conger Going To Triple A!

Hank Conger has been someone the Angels have loved ever since they drafted him in 2006. Well its 2009 and he's another step closer to the majors. Today the Angels announced that their number 1 prospect in the organization is getting the call up to Triple A Salt Lake. Conger was batting very well in Double A, and the Angels felt he was ready to make the jump. With a set catcher in the majors, its not likely we will see Conger this year, but if he keeps this pace up, we could see some competition next year. The switch hitting power catcher is just what Scoscia likes in his lineups. Also, if Napoli goes down, Scoscia might be willing to let the kid come up and take a few hacks. Either way its a big day for Hank, and he hopes to be joining the Big Club soon.

It was a tough night for the Angels as they lost a heartbreaker to the Seattle Mariners. Joe Saunders was rolling through the first couple innings, but then he fell apart allowing 5 ER in 5 innings. He struck out 8, a season high, but couldn't stay consistent. Carlos Silva, who had struggled all year, picked up his first win of the season allowing 3 ER. Jose Lopez turned out to be the hero with a 2 run shot that would be the difference. The Angels hope they can get a better performance by Pedro Martinez next.

Matthews Jr. traded to Yankees!

Today the Angels made big headlines by trading Gary Matthews Jr. to the Yankees. The deal was Matthews Jr. and Rich Mullis, a Double A prospect, for Damaso Marte. The Angels dump Matthews salary to a team who could definately afford it, and they take Marte, who the Yankees have been shopping for a while now. Marte still has 3 years left on his contract as well. Also, the Yankees receive OF help that they needed in center. They picked up Michael Bourn for Melky Cabrera earlier, but hes struggling and was sent down to triple A. Matthews will join the lineup for the Yankees next game. The Angels needed Marte at the moment as Oliver, there go to guy lefty, has been struggling and they needed a lefty arm to pitch in middle of the game. The Angels bullpen hasn't been as strong as it was lived up to be. Jepsen, Speier, Oliver, and Arredondo all have ERA's over 4. Marte should really help them out. The Double A pitcher, Rich Mullis, the Yankees hope will pan out as he has a decent fastball and decent curve. If he develops these pitches he will be effective. This trade came upon request by Matthews and we were able to catch up with him. "I didn't want to leave initially, but i feel that my services can be used elsewhere where i can get more playing time. The Yankees will be a nice fit because ill get to play in Center where i belong." Mike Scoscia also commented about Marte joining the team. "Were really happy to have Damaso, you can never have too much pitching, and right now our bullpen could use a lift. This definately helps the team. Im really happy with the way Preston is running things around here."

Loux, Willits Get Call

Immediately after the Gary Matthews trade, the Angels called up Reggie Willits for Morgan Puffer. Puffer had been struggling in the majors in his stint with the club. The Angels also decided to let Kevin Jepsen go down to work on some things, and they brought up Shane Loux who has been dominate in the minors. Loux will go into the middle relief role where Jepsen was. Jepsen had an ERA over 5 so it was clear he needed to get out.

Light Up That Halo! The Angels won a thriller tonight with young prospect Nick Adenhart on the mound. It was his second start this year and he pitched 9 innings of 3 hit scoreless baseball. The problem was, Erik Bedard was stride for stride with him. It wasn't until in the 10th inning, Kendry Morales lined a bomb to right field off of Tyler Walker. In the bottom of the 10th Brian Fuentes came in a struck out 2 to close the game out and receive his 13th save of the year. The Angels will try and take the series with John Lackey facing Brandon Morrow tommorow.

thanks man, yeah i like the way Fuentes is closing things out. Idk dude im 40 games into the season so im starting to get used to each persons delivery, so i can max out, or come close to, every pitch. Adenhart has only been up for 2 starts. But before i called him up i went and played about 4 or 5 exibition matches with him so i could get used to his delivery. So thats just how i do it

Angels Rookie Adenhart Killed In Car Accident

Terrible news out of California this morning, where we've just learned that the Angels rookie Nick Adenhart was killed in an early morning hit-and-run accident in Fullerton on Thursday.

The news was first reported by TMZ and later confirmed by Yahoo! Sports baseball columnist Tim Brown.

Just 22 years old, Adenhart started for Los Angeles on Wednesday night and struck out five batters over six scoreless innings in a 6-4 loss to Oakland. It was only the fourth start of his young career and first since earning the third spot in the Angels' rotation over spring training.

According to reports, Adenhart was driving home with three others in his silver Mitsubishi when a mini-van ran through a red light and hit Adenhart's car, causing it to crash into a light pole. A female driver and male passenger died on the scene while Adenhart was taken to the hospital where he died undergoing surgery, according to a spokesman from the UC-Irvine Medical Center. The driver of the mini-van fled the scene, but was later apprehended by police. No other members of the Angels' organization were involved.

This is the most tragic news you can imagine in the baseball world and our thoughts go out to Adenhart's family and the entire Angels' organization, which was already reeling from the death of a fan who was involved in a fight on Opening Day.

RIP NICK ADENHART!!! YOU WILL ALWAYS BE IN OUR HEARTS!

and by the way...let this be a lesson to everyone, drinking and driving is a terrible thing! That loser took the lives of 3 PEOPLE last night just because he was drinking while driving. If you drink and drive because you think its "cool" then you are a complete idiot. Anyone that drinks and drives needs to realize that at any moment you could take someones life, hell you could take yours as well. Think before you do something stupid like that.

agreed man. me and my dad were hit by a drunk driver when i was 6 and my dad was killed. its crazy how you can miss someone so much and that someone can miss so much of their life. especially with adenhart being 22, he had so much to accomplish. RIP

Tough loss tonight for the Halos. They came out of the gates swinging, getting a run in the 1st. But Randy Wolf pitched excellent after that and shut them down. In the 8th Manny Ramirez tied the game on a single up the middle off Pedro Martinez. Then after a tight top of the 9th. It would be Orlando Hudson to lace one off Damaso Marte into center for the game winner. The Angels hope to improve their luck with Joe Saunders on the mound next.

Light Up That Halo as the Angels win an 11 inning pitchers duel against their cross town foes. It was a battle as the Angels scored in the 1st again, and again were shut down. But this time it went into extras thanks to brilliant pitcher by long time Angel reliever, Scott Shields. He pitched 3 fabulous innings of relief and kept the Angels in the ballgame. Then in the 11th, after a perfectly executed hit and run between Maicer Izturis and Erick Aybar, Howie Kendrick hit a deep fly ball to center that was far enough to bring home Izturis. This was a big win for the Halos and a big boost of confidence. They hope to keep on winning with Jered Weaver making his first start since being sent down to Triple A a couple weeks ago.

Today was a great day for Bobby Abreu. Abreu had 3 hits and was no doubt the player of the game. He hit a homer in the 9th that would end up winning it. He also hit a couple singles that brought in some key runs. Abreu leads the Angels in RBI's and HR's now and is really establishing himself as a leader on this ballclub. Starter Jered Weaver made his return to the club after a short stint in Triple A. Weaver had a good outing going 6 innings allowing 3 runs, but striking out 7. The Angels head back home to Anaheim now to face the White Sox as Jermaine Dye will square off against his old team, while Chone Figgins faces his.

What a game tonight. Win or lose you have to give it up to the Angels tonight. The White Sox had a great game pitching as did the Angels. This game went 18 INNINGS!! Unbelievable if you ask me. Ervin Santana pitched 10 innings and his only run was a Carlos Quentin homer. Jermaine Dye hit 2 Homers against his old team for the first time! Chone Figgins was 1-7 as the Angels held him at bay. The Angels used alot of their arms tonight so the bullpen should be tired tommorow. They hope they can get through the rest of the series. John Lackey will be on the hill for the Angels next.

Angels Sign Matt Brown, Call Up Bulger

Today was a very interesting day for the Angels. Earlier this season the Angels traded Chone Figgins, Robb Quinlan, and Matt Brown for Jermaine Dye. Luckily for Angels, The White Sox released Brown due to an overcrowding at 3B. So today the Angels went out and picked him back up, making the Jermaine Dye deal even better. To put Brown down they also called up Jason Bulger to come into the bullpen.

6. C Mike Napoli 2-4
7. 1B Kendry Morales 0-4
8. LF Juan Rivera 0-4

Tough loss tonight for the Halos as the Seattle Mariners had Felix Hernandez on the mound shutting things down. The Angels had a hard time hitting anything hard against him but did manage to score two runs. It wasnt enought though as the Mariners would win by getting a run off of a Maicer Izturis error. Izturis was in the game because starting SS Erick Aybar left the game with an injured finger. We do not know the extent of the injury at this point. The Angels need to bounce back from this disappointing loss though, as we are almost into June.

Angels Aybar Has Broken Finger! Atkins, Peralta To Fill Void?

It was not good news coming out of Anaheim today as the Angels lost starting SS Erick Aybar for a good amount of time with a broken finger. They have placed him on the 60 day DL. This injury brings up questions about a possible trade now for a SS. Or, Brandon Wood, who has played SS could move over there and then the Angels could trade for a 3B. GM Preston Ross did not deny this, "Losing Aybar is a big blow, hes a top of the order guy who can fly. We are going to look for a replacement and see what comes up though." Rumors have been circulating around Colorado that the Angels are interested in 3B Garrett Atkins, but GM Ross has not commented on that. Also Johnny Peralta, who the Angels were interested in earlier, has been mentioned. We will keep you updated as we find out more.
