It's 2009 and the Houston Astros are looking again for that same spark that won them the pennant in 2005. They have signed new GM Paul Derrick, who is looking to bring back the spark in Houston, and bring the Astros thier first World Series title. 2008 was an interesting year for the Astros as they started the first half of the season off poor, but made a strong run after the break falling just short of a playoff berth. After finishing last season at 86-75 just 3.5 games out of the wildcard, the Astros and GM Paul Derrick have high hopes for 2009. When Paul Derrick was addressed as new GM of the Astros, he did tell the media that pitching is something he does look to address this year, before the season starts. They will be carrying the same rotation they had last year minus left hander Randy Wolf who is gone due to free agency, but did add an old face in the addition of lefty Mike Hampton. The loss of Ty Wigginton is something the media asked GM Derrick about, but he does think the platoon of Aaron Boone and Geoff Blum could do the job.
So what is ahead in the offseason for Houston? Only time will tell, but it does seem like the new GM does want to make some moves to pull in some talent to help out on this pitching staff that had a team ERA of 4.36 last year.

[center]GM Derrick makes first big move of offseason
Pudge Signs with Astros
http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x65/pderrick22/Ivan-Rodriguez.jpg
In thier first big move of the year the Houston Astros new GM Paul Derrick acquired 13 time gold glove winner Pudge Rodriguez, GM Derrick thought it was a good idea to add some veteran experience to young inexperienced catching staff. In a press conference announcing the signing GM Derrick did not announce were Pudge would fit in the catching staff and who might be dropped down to Triple A. The inside report is that Pudge will be the daily starter with Humberto Quintero backing him up, and J.R. Towles once again dropping down to Triple A. There was no word on the contract agreement that the Astros and Pudge agreed to, but it is suspected to be a one year deal for 900k. We figure this to be the last move the Astros will make this offseason due to a tight budget, but with new GM Paul Derrick, anything could happen.

Hello just to introduce myself I am Jay Winters from Astro Fans Online and I will be doing a weekly show, going over the season and daily operations of the Astros this year. We are one day from opening day and the beginning to hopefully a wonderful season for the Astros this year. With the hiring of new GM Paul Derrick, the Astros are really looking to make a push for the pennant this year, GM Derrick was quick to make a move this year in signing some key additions to hopefully help out the team, he brought on veteran Utility player Aaron Boone, who will platoon with Geoff Blum this year at 3rd base to fill the void of the loss of Ty Wiggington, GM Derrick also brought in veteran catcher Ivan "Pudge" Rodriguez on a one year contract to be the general behind the plate this year. GM Derrick has said that he has looked around heavily for some pitching this year, as the only new acquistion made on that side this winter was ex-Brave Mike Hampton, who is coming off little playing time over the last 2 years due to injuries. GM Derrick does have a positive outlook on this season, and Manager Cecil Cooper says that he is a great guy to work with in the organization. Later today, we will have GM Paul Derrick in for a Q&A session, so readers please post any questions you might have for the new GM, and stay tuned for our Q&A.

WRTG GAME RECAP
Astros pitching steps up again only allowing 2 runs as the Astros complete the opening series sweep of the Cubs. After Rodriguez let a 2 run HR by Aramis Ramirez give the Cubs a 2-0 lead, he was pleased to see that Lance Berkman had his back, as he crushed a 2-1 curveball by Ted Lilly into the Crawford Box, to tie the game back up. Hunter Pence knocked what would be the game winning run in at the bottom of the 4th inning to wrap the series up for the Astros. Stay tuned as later we will bring you the upcoming series update as the Astros get set to head to St.Louis to face the Cardinals.

WRTG GAME RECAP
Today was just what the Astros were worried about this year, the back of the rotation falling apart, and that it did today, as Pujols and Glaus lit up Houstons pitching today with 3Hr's and 9RBIs, the only bright spot today was an inning and 2/3 of relief work were Felipe Paulino only allowed 1 hit and struck out 1.

Decent pitching just wasn't enough for the Astros today, Backe pitched a close game until the bottom of the 8th when Pujols once again became the spoiler, with a solo shot to right to put the Cards up for good 3 to 2. Watch tommorrow as aces Roy Oswalt and Chris Carpenter duel.

Criticize him for his lack of range and point out that a 32-year-old with his build seems destined to break down eventually, but the fact remains that Lee has been one of the most productive, consistent sluggers in baseball this decade. And you can throw out the fact that a broken finger cost him the final six weeks of 2008 because that's definitely a fluky injury. Here are Lee's per-year averages this decade: 150 games, .290 batting average, 29 home runs, 102 RBIs, 90 runs scored. Those are averages, remember; he topped every one of those numbers in 2006 and 2007.

Hello, everbody this is Jay Winters again, to bring you the weekly recap on the action so far this year. Well the front side of pitching has done well so far this year, with Oswalt and Hampton pitching very well. Manager Cecil Cooper did say that the back side of the rotation is what he is worried about and that nobody is guaranteed to keep their spot back there, so look for changes if Moehler continues to struggle, and if Backe falls off. As far as the clubhouse buzz, rumor has it that GM Paul Derrick has his eye on youngster Jose Veras from the Yankees, the word is that the two teams are in talks already and that the supposed deal might send Tim Byrdak and Fernando Nieve to New York, but stay tuned for more on that story. Well, Houston is getting ready for a trip to Pittsburgh now, where they will take on the division leading Pirates, who are being carried right now behind the bat of Nate Mcclouth. Definitely should be an interesting series, well stay tuned, and look forward to chatting next week, this is Jay Winters signing off, goodnight and let's go Astros!

Well ladies and gentleman its official Jose Veras is coming to Houston, in a trade that will send Tim Byrdak and a player TBA to the Yankees, don't really know if this is much of a trade on either side, I would say that Houston is probably getting the better share of this deal being that Veras is only 29 compared to Byrdak who will be 37 this summer, General Manager Paul Derrick had this to say about Veras, hes a great guy, very competitive and is tough to beat, I think he makes our bullpen even better than what it already was. Veras probably looks to split time with Hawkins in the setup role.
Also in other news around the league 3B Miguel Cabrera has been placed on the 60 day DL due to a torn finger ligament.

Berkman is remarkably consistent, posting a .300/.400/.500 season (.300-plus batting average, .400-plus on-base percentage and .500-plus slugging percentage) in 2008 for the fourth time in his past eight seasons. And while some might wonder whether Berkman's career is entering a declining phase, fact is, at age 33, he's hardly "old," and his .821 second-half OPS might not trouble you so much if you consider that Geoff Blum served as his lineup protection in 33 of his final 45 games after Carlos Lee got hurt.

The Astros bats were shortened again today as Aaron Harang pitched an impressive game posting his 1000th strikeout of his career. Roy Oswalt was roughed up for the first time this year giving up 3 runs in 5 1/3 innings, tune in tommorrow as the Astros try to to stop this 3 game skid against Bronson Arroyo.

WRTG GAME RECAP
Wow what an end to the series, this definitely wasn't a pitchers duel today, as the teams combined for 21 runs on 23 hits, it was a dogfight to the finish as the Astros took a nice lead after a 8 run third inning only to slowly let the Reds back in due to bad pitching today, definitely was an exciting end to the series though. Next week the Astros head back home to face the Dodgers in what should be a great series.

His otherworldly numbers after joining the Dodgers have been well-documented, and his struggles to find a new home may oddly help keep him motivated if he's out to prove something to the teams that passed on him. The bat speed is still there, and scouts noted there was absolutely nowhere to pitch him in the second half, showing he's still capable of being locked in when he feels like it

A monster slugger who is questionable on defense at his drafted position of third base, Braun seemed much more comfortable in his shift to left field in 2008. He didn't commit a single error, and while he fell short in repeating his outstanding rookie numbers, he did manage healthy numbers in all the pertinent categories. With a year's experience in left, and his prime years just around the corner at age 25, Braun might yet have room for growth, especially in the power department.

Player to watch
Jay Bruce
http://i290.photobucket.com/albums/ll280/Stryker2128/MLB/jay-bruce.jpg
There's little doubt that Bruce, one of the game's most promising young hitters, should continue to improve in 2009. But what kind of hitter will Bruce be in his sophomore season? Is he the swing-for-the-fences type who belted 15 home runs but batted .244 in 64 second-half games, or the gaps hitter who batted .308 and averaged 26 homers per 150 games played in his minor league career? Spring training might offer the answer, but 110 strikeouts in 413 rookie at-bats suggest the former seems more likely. That might put Bruce at risk for some slumps -- maybe the dreaded season-long sophomore slump -- but it also grants him a chance at a real breakout power season. To say he's a candidate to belt 30-plus home runs is more than fair.

Well ladies and gentleman its official the Oakland A's and Houston Astros have worked out a deal to send RP Geoff Geary and C Humberto Quintero to Oakland, for heavy hitting LF Jack Cust, the Astros will also move C J.R. Towles up to the majors to be the backup for Pudge Rodriguez. When asking GM Derrick where Jack will fit in the lineup. Paul said they really couldn't pass up on the deal, and that everybody will have to wait and see how he will fit in the lineup.

Though his 3.54 ERA in 2008 represented a career worst, Oswalt's 1.18 WHIP indicates it might have been merely a result of poor fortune. He got off to a sluggish start, with a 4-4 record, 5.61 ERA and 1.49 WHIP in his first 11 starts, but he was vintage Oswalt from then on, going 13-6 with a 2.51 ERA and 1.02 WHIP in his final 21 games.

http://i424.photobucket.com/albums/pp329/christian3betancourt/soriano.jpg
His 30/30 days are probably in the rearview mirror and he's a bit more brittle than he was earlier in his career, but Soriano continues to produce like few outfielders can. Despite missing 53 games with a calf injury in 2008, he managed a seventh consecutive year with at least 28 home runs and 70 RBIs, remarkable numbers for a leadoff hitter. Plus, while he has slowed somewhat on the base paths, he remains a skilled base stealer, enough to keep him in the teens in the category.

WRTG GAME RECAP
The bullpen was fantastic for the Astros toiday as they came in and pitched 9 innings not allowing any runs and only 4 hits while striking out 2, pitching seems to be the key to the Astros success as of late, not that the offense didn't do there part as Lance Berkamn and newly acquired RF Jack Cust both hit homers today, making an easy two game sweep of the Cubs, the Astros will now get ready to host the Padres for a 3 game series that should be good.

The numbers have been trending up in the homer department for Gonzalez over the past three seasons, while his batting average has been heading in the opposite direction. Some may see him as being on a growth trend, but it's also possible that his power numbers peaked last year. A huge spike in his homers per fly ball in '08 means that 36 homers likely are not achievable again.

Pence seemed to take a step backward as a sophomore, though the truth is, rather than an actual regression in performance, he sacrificed batting average for power. He was a streakier player than in his rookie campaign, twice batting better than .300 in a month but twice batting beneath .225. So which Pence is the real one? The answer, of course, is somewhere in between, something more like a respectable, .280-hitting, 25-homer candidate, with the potential for more.

Perhaps Fielder's critics will suggest that his going vegetarian might have sapped his power this past season, but why can't it be argued it merely threw him off track only at the very beginning of the year? Accounting only for Fielder's games played from May 30 forward, he batted .277 with 28 home runs, 77 RBIs and a .925 OPS in 106 contests, which projects to 42 homers and 116 RBIs over a full season.

Well to add insult to injury for last nights game according to team physcian Brian Moehler will be out at least 2 months with a broken rib, this definitely comes at the most inoppurtune time, as it seems as if the starters were really starting to shine for the Astros in a talk with Manager Cecil Cooper he said "Well right now we will put Brian on the 60 Day DL, and hope for a speedy recovery as far as who will take his place I don't know right now, we might just go with a 4 man rotation, or just bring in Sampson to do some spot starts, I really don't know, just hope that Brian makes a speedy recovery.

Kinsler was among the most valuable players in baseball until a sports hernia ended his season in mid-August, and you can make a case that he could be the best second baseman in the American League this year with his 20/20 bat and solid batting average. The Astros wrapped another series today, as Chris Sampson came out and pitched a stellar performance in his first start taking over for injured Brian Moehler. Cecil Cooper had this to say after the game "Chris did great tonight I was happy with his performance, I think you will probably see him some more making starts until Brian makes it back". The Astros will now take to Cincinnati for a three game series versus the Reds.

After missing 29 games because of a broken wrist in 2007, the durable version of Miguel Tejada returned this past season, as he appeared in 158 contests. His power, however, didn't join him for the trip. Tejada hit only 13 home runs, his fewest since 1998, and only three in 86 games from June 20 forward. He also had an OPS of .729, again his worst since 1998. As such, Tejada's career is in a steep downward trend, and with him set to turn 35 in May, a turnaround of any sort shouldn't be expected. He'll presumably play in as many games as his body will allow him, accounting for the dearth of talent on the left side of the Houston infield, and he'll hit for a respectable batting average.

http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/images/200805/20080506pd_pirates0505b_330.jpg
One of 2008's most surprising breakout performers, McLouth is the kind of player whom it might have been smarter to sell high in June than to stick with all season. From June 1 forward, he batted .257 with 13 home runs, 53 RBIs, 18 stolen bases and 67 runs scored in 99 games. To be fair, projecting those stats to a full season's worth of action would mean 20 homers, 80 RBIs, 27 steals and 101 runs scored, which are extremely healthy numbers. Also, keep in mind that McLouth's batting average on balls in play during that span was .277, so the deflated .257 clip might have been more a mirage than reality. Now 27, McLouth is in his power prime, and as such he's probably a better fit to bat third than leadoff for the Pirates. A future as a first-round fantasy selection might be a stretch, but 25/25 players aren't the easiest to come by.

Player to watch
Troy Tulowitzki
http://blogs.phoenixnewtimes.com/valleyfever/tulowitzki.jpg
A torn quad and a lacerated palm had Tulo out of action for much of last season, but the important thing is that he looked like his rookie-year self down the stretch, hitting .327 and slugging .469 in the second half, saving his best stretch of hitting for September. Despite a slow start to the year before the injuries hit, Tulowitzki finished his campaign with better walk and strikeout rates than 2008, and was flashing that 20-plus homer pop by season's end.
