View Full Version : Submit your NHL2k 10 questions here

The powers that be at 2k have been kind enough to grant us an interview. We will be able to submit a bunch of questions that will be handed off to someone on the development team to be answered. When i get the response back it will be broken into segments and released in this forum.
I have my own questions, but I want to know what your questions are also. I will combine the best of all of the questions and turn it in two 2k.
So here is our chance. Please take this thread serious. This is not a place for smart arse comments or back handed jabs. Any of those types of comments in this thread will be moved. Lets stay on task here and see if we cant come up with a bunch of good question. 2K will probably decline comment on a few topics... You know how game company's like their secrets.
so lets throw some questions out there and see what we can find out. Id like to not let this thread linger to long. Lets get this organized and turned in. Ill get it started with some of my questions as an example. Im not looking for complicated questions intended with double meanings. Just simple and to the point questions. Just the facts
1. will nhl 2k10 have live rosters?
2. will 2k10 have lobby's?
3. will you be able to decline a fight in 2k10?
4. will the one legged, one arm, no headed skater be returning to haunt NHL2k 10?
5. For 2k 10 did you seek inspiration for the game from anything new, or is it just the evolution of 2k9
6. Is that really the sound of sneakers some people think they hear when playing nhl 2k9?
7. Will there be any new controller set up changes in 2k10?
8. Will the All Star game make a return in 2k10?
9. With the Olympics coming up soon, will we see a added emphasis on international play in 2k10
10. The Online League website is awesome. But the trade functions don't work. Any chance that will be working in 2k10?
11. Any changes to reelmaker?
12. Any Graphical improvements?

I really hope 2K can compete with EA this year. I want NHL 2K10 to be a great simulation game. 2K was lightyears ahead of EA with NHL 2K5, but then they lost it on next-gen consoles. I hope they got it back this year.

I pretty much gave up hope for NHL 10 for wii :/ I didn't buy NHL 2k9 but I'm most likely going to get NHL 2k10 wii unless it's completely trash. Though at this point I would settle for anything...
With NHL 2k10 wii
1. Will their be online mode?
2. Will the physics/animation be improved? I noticed in alot of videos players seem to pass through each other and sticks go rate through the cross bars...
3. Will it support roster updates?
4. Will it support the new wii motion+
I realize I'll never get amazing graphics on the wii but I mean EA sports did a great job on Tiger Woods 09 for wii graphics wise and TW10 will be amazing with motion+

It's hard to be patient when 2K has not released a hockey game since 2005.
If you mean 2K5, that would be 2004. But anyway, quality aside, NHL 2K6, NHL 2K7, NHL 2K8 and NHL 2K9 were all hockey games. You may disagree about whether or not they're good hockey games, but they're still hockey games.
And I know it's hard to be patient, but getting mad on the forums (likely towards stoney0ne) isn't going to get the answers back to you any sooner. You can also inquire about the answers without taking shots at the developers. It's just not necessary.

Bingo. Of course, EA is bringing it, but we can no doubt expect a much more competitive entry from 2K10 than 2K9 was. That's pretty much guaranteed. VC knows they're facing incredible odds, no way they mail this one in.

There is no doubt 2k's next installment is going to be better. The brilliant marketing scheme of "low expectations" will undoubtedly help to ensure that outcome. By that I mean, with such a lackluster effort with the current version anything released in the future, by comparison, has to be better.
I realize that the above statement sounds pejorative in nature but it is not meant that way. I am a HUGE fan of, and consumer of, 2k and am anxiously awaiting 2k10. I completely agree with RoadDogg, no way 2k10 will be a disappointment.

I think the concern that EA appears to be emphasizing fighting and force more than hockey skating and shooting skills may have substance and, if so, perhaps 2K has a chance for success by merely polishing and amplifying its product. More scrums along the boards and more cycling sound like possible EA improvements but it would be very easy to over-do those aspects to the point where speed and stick skills become secondary factors. In any case, it sounds as though hockey gamers will have two distinctly different games to choose from in 2010.

it will be very interesting to see how the board play is done...
if its done wrong, it could be a game killer
I'm picturing every time the puck gets by the boards an animation kicks in and forces a scrum...
macpuck
May 18th, 2009, 07:41 AM
That's a pretty good guess on how it will work ... or not work. A secondary concern of mine is how the rating structure will determine the way players function along the boards, Both the EA and 2K games suffer from ratings systems in which too many slow skaters are fast (etc. etc.) and coming up with some kind of "digging out/controlling the puck along the boards" rating for 400 players creates that many more opportunities to get it wrong. There are players who are good at shielding opponents away from the puck along the boards ... there are players who are good at kicking the puck free and retrieving it ... there are players who can knock an opponent away from the puck along the boars and there are opponents who can not only work the puck free but create enough space to make a pass ... and then there are those rare players who can do all of those things and make a good pass! Creating a rating system that takes at least some of these different elements into consideration will not be an easy task.

Exactly. I can envision scrums being implemented much like 2k's new fighting engine: great in theory and even execution, but occuring way too often.
If you don't adjust the fighting slider accordingly you can have up to 5 or 6 fights in normal timed game. Ah, but there is the rub, sliders. In 2k one has the ability adjust the slider, in EA, not so much. If you don't have the ability to control the frequency of scrums along the boards it will definitely be a killer.

the powers that be are heavily involved with the launching of the BIGS 2 right now... I suspect that is taking attention away from all the 2k10 games right now (in a PR sense, not a game development sense)
so my hunch is, after they get all the BIGS 2 stuff squared away, we will see them move onto preparations for 2K games (us and NBA)

I was informed today that we can expect some awnsers in a few weeks. Some time in June basicly.
2K has some big plans for the 2k10 games. Look for them to start a couple different campains in a couple different places. Aparently our questions hit them square in the eyes, and we where a little more direct and on target than expected. So they are going to include our questions in with their pr stuff
They will be awnsered, but if they did it now it would spoil some of the secrecy that game developers love
So like I said before. Look for them to get the Bigs launched, then **** the 2k 10 games like never before

the way im taking it... Our questions where right on target. They directly addressed many of the concerns around the franchise.
so instead of hand picking and half awnsering some of the questions... they are going to use them as a guide to help in the PR effort that will be started over the summer. They are working on their blue print for a marketing strategy.. If they released answers to us now it would take some of "luster" off of what they are wanting to do as the launch gets closer.
its a good thing guys... I cant/wont disclose what I was told exactly... But we should have an interesting June once the ball starts rolling.
if i could offer an analogy.... 2k is digging in and preparing for an assault

Hockey is never over.
I think it is a significant plus that stoneyOne has made contact and received at least some feedback from the developers of NHL2k10. 2Ks acknowledgement of the questions list suggests that they are at least willing to investigate the usefullness of paying attention to the people who buy their product. I believe this is a very encouraging sign and I think we should make every effort to support StoneyOne's attempts to communicate with 2K. In order to make the most of this breakthrough, I believe we should try to at least temporarily put aside our disappointments and complaints about past products and policies in order to help StoneyOne to create a more cooperative channel for communication. Could it be that "next year" may finally be arriving for hockey gamers?

I have feeling 2k is playing the release of any info pretty close to the vest so as not to encourage any unrealistic expectations fans may harbor. Under promise and over deliver may be their thinking on this one. Any prerelease info needs to be spot on to what will actually be in the game. Any glitches related to a highly anticipated new aspect of the game will certainly enflame an already weary fan base. Please 2k, whatever info you choose to release make sure you can deliver on it. It sounds like you have a competent and reliable team working on it and I look forward to a stellar 2k10.

Wild card:
2K Sports might be due for an overhaul of its NHL and NBA games. NHL 2K9 struggled to keep up with the superb NHL 09 from Electronic Arts. Their NBA franchise is still solid, although tweaks such as simplified controls could give it the boost it needs to stay ahead of NBA Live.

Will NHL2K10 be released for PC?
EA has decided to not re-box NHL 2004 again and sell it as NHL 2010 for PC? There are a lot of people out there that play hockey on PC and we will have no "new" game next year. EA's declining sales in this market segment is due to their lack of investment in any type of improvements since '04 -in fact, the games have gotten worse. there were more features in NHL '03 than in 09. They try to blame a shrinking PC game market, but if they actually made a good game, they would have the sales. You cant expect to re-release the same game for 5 years in a row and the market not shrink, can you?
Could possibly be worth taking a look at????????

A pc version would be nice for those of us craving a portable hockey game. I suppose it is too much to hope for that if they do offer a pc version that they offer an OSX version as well. If not, I'll have to finally break down and load that vile Windows operating system onto my mac. But if that is what it takes to have a decent hockey game while on the road then so be it.

I'm dissapointed in you guys. I read through this entire thread and I can't believe there isn't a single one of you hardcore fans that is concerned with wether or not the hitting is fixed. I can't believe you could all turn a blind eye to how the hitting is currently functioning just because it's a bug that helps you win games. That's of poor character man! You guys are not dumb, you damn well know that the way hitting works is a bug. I would love to know if hitting has been fixed? Has the zip factor been removed? Hitting should not be an accelerator, it should be a decelerator. Hitting with no man in front of you to hit should do nothing. The game should not help players line up their hit. The hit should be based off the players current speed and direction, timing should be a factor and a skill to be mastered. I will not buy 2K10 if the hitting is as rediculous as it was in 2K9, I would really love an answer to this question. Has the hitting been fixed?

Will 2k10 have the french text translation again?
If yes, will it be done well this time?
Why some jerseys are tucked in in the replays and cutscenes but all jerseys are out when you play the game?
Will the options (like camera, presentation...) stay saved or will we need to set them up each time again?
Will the menu be clearer this time? It's just really hard to figure where to go sometimes (the bad, really bad, horrible french translation doesn't help with that).

Marketing isn't intended to get you to buy the game. It's intended to get the people who don't go online to the publisher's official forums to buy the game.
The devs have said it's a sim game that they're very proud of. They're not asking for faith, they're doing their jobs and hoping you can appreciate the final product.

Will we be able to go online this year and manually put lines on the ice?
In 2K9 we have to go with the AI's choice for our team on line changes while online. The intimidation factor causes us to lose games we might have won because we have our speedy guys against their tough guys.
Will the new online franchise mode include COOP?
So if my friend is playing one team and I have another, can we play on one of those teams together on those nights when both our teams are not playing each other?
Will we be able to use our own or customized rosters in online franchise mode?
So that if we get, for example the rookie roster update can we use that update to start our franchise?
Is it almost impossible to get a timeout in 2K10 still?
In 2K9 it was almost impossible to use a timeout, during stoppages, when we had possession of the puck? Hoping it's easier this year.
In 2K10 can we go right back to the menu to replay/start a new game after a game is finished?
In 2K9 we would have to quit out, and then go back and setup everything all over again. It would be HUGE if the game retained your settings from the last game, simply a saved preferences file and got you right back out onto the ice. It takes about 5 minutes of setup each game in 2K9 every game online to get set for the next match.
Will we have a skill stick closer to 2K8, new controls or what kind of options will we have to change those settings?
Has the issue been fixed where you would ghost through players if you try to check them right off the faceoff?
Thanks for your time, looking forward to a GREAT 2K10!

This was a huge downer for me personally to omit this from last years game. I have no idea why it would be taken out at all to begin with? I realize most use the 3/4 cam online but why have the need to eliminate it altogether? The game, no question, should have a "create a cam" for total adjustment to fit each person's preference IMO.
Secondly, I think if 2k7/2k8 where just cleaned up, and made bug free with new animations and camera additions, it would be great.
Lastly, fix the manual goalie auto post movement when no buttons/commands are being used.... If I don't press ANY buttons, the goalie, or any other player for that matter shouldn't move AT ALL.
thanks, and good luck with following up last years disaster !!!

It sounds to me as though they're playing politics with us in regards to the submitted questions. When they offered the olive branch to allow fans to submit questions they led us to believe they would be answered here in this forum. They never said when they would be answered, and thats fine, (I'd be happy if they released the answers a week, heck, even a day before release), but now to say you'll get your answers if you sift through the information that we're releasing through other avenues seems a bit weak to me.

Never bought NHL 2k9 wii, but the Zamboni addition looked really fun for a between period entertainment. I hope they left it in with all the changes they are making.

We should be getting a steady flow of information every week. They haven't even released a trailer yet. We should also be hearing about a demo soon.

I loved the playoff beards.. but the zamboni to me was little goofy. One thing they should improve is the stanley cup celebration because I loved handling the cup but a cutscene of the players jumping on they're goalie and the commisioner handing them the cup would be nice along with presenting the conn smythe which I don't know why they took it out. Oh and a handshake after each series would be cool!

Why would they take it out. Its something EA doesnt have. I love Ovie's authenticity. Very nice.

Totally agree with everything you stated. Playoff beards add to the authenticity of the game, and playoff atmosphere has always been one of 2k's strong suits. Don't take them out.

Question:
Why are you keeping Randy Hahn and Drew Remendah as the commentators? Why not Mike emrick or the capitals commentator?

I couldn't agree more. Play off beards in the play offs were SIM. How you do ice in their Zamboni game was far from SIM but fun when you're in the mood but I never figured out
how to play it on line.

I hope when the players score a goal in overtime or a goal in the SCF they get real excited, that would look great.. especially since all 5 players will celebrate in 2k10 rather than 1 guy.

Is the Tripping fixed this year? The ease of tripping someone last year and the animations for it were awful.

Less tripping penalties. Add a good amount. I only get tripping and interference even with sliders.

One big issue is that I play NHL2k9 and will play 2k10 with the WII remote in one hand and the nunchuk in the right hand. I have a huge problem in shootouts controling the goalie because I have to switch hands every turn. Since I'm not used to the controls the whole "controling the goalie" and shootouts loses its fun.
Will there be an option in 2k10 for right and left handed players? Also, will the Wii motion take account for left handed players for shootouts or even shooting passing motions?

your question was put to Ben Bishop (a fellow lefty) this was his response
We don’t have a handedness option you can change in the game, but I played with both crease control and manual goalie control and it doesn’t seem that bad. It’s probably crease control that he was complaining about because the save gestures that you have to make pop up with the nunchuk on the left and the Wii Remote on the right. They aren’t so complicated though to where you couldn’t do it with either hand. I was playing it okay with them swapped.

Thanks for passing it along Stoney0ne.
Its almost impossible for me to try to match the gestures left handed (or switch to righty) and have fun with it. I just thought it would improve the goaltending experience for lefties that actually play left handed. This is coming from someone that played hockey and would never play 2k right handed because it would feel unnatural.

I've tryed 3 times, in NHL 2K9, 1 got screwed up pretty early in the first season, and the other 2 during the playoffs of my first season.

I could be wrong but I believe the final question-answer session before the release date occured on Friday via conference call. It's possible that they will also answer the questions Stoney has collected here in their own forum. You would think, however, if that was the case, they would have mentioned it during the conference call and/or that there would be announcements of an answer-fest all over this forum. I'm sure it's a very busy time for 2K but they appear to have initiated this question-answer exercise and so you wonder????

Yeah you're probably right mackpuck, but it still kind of annoys me that they won't answer the questions that stoney submitted from this thread. The first post in this thread, that opened in May, reads in part:
The powers that be at 2k have been kind enough to grant us an interview. We will be able to submit a bunch of questions that will be handed off to someone on the development team to be answered. When i get the response back it will be broken into segments and released in this forum.
I understand their desire to do the conference call, but to totally neglect their stated intentions and those of us that frequent and participate in these forums (the official forums) as a choice over the other forums is a little snotty.
Oh well, at least some of the questions were answered even if we had to go to other sites to find the answers.

It seems as though they are more worried about being high-tech than they are about working with their "real" customers. Stoney went to a lot of trouble to line up all of these questions and they appear to have ignored them and started another thread for the conference call. If that's the case, it is a bit more annoying than a simple miscommunication. On the conference call, some of the 2K folks even mentioned that they check the forum frequently and so they must know that they left a lot of questions from this thread unanswered. If they don't follow through here, they will have hurt Stoney's credability because he set up what was supposed to be an authorized question-answer opportunity. Who knows? Maybe they are still going to answer the questions we asked in this space but the timing is a bit strange since the demo is due out very soon and it will undoubtedly answer many questions. I believe they said they were going to break the answers into segments and that gives the impression that it would be a two, three or four day presentation which, again, would take us beyond the release of the demo. That would seem to be a little late for answering questions but i guess we'll take 'em whenever we can get 'em.

Stoney ... Can you tell us what happened here? Was there a duplication of effort or did somebody just goof?
By the way I went to a video store today (Sunday) and one of the clerks went to a website that said the NHL2k10 hockey demo is "available for PS3 and XBox360" but I sure couldn't find it in marketplace on my XBox 360. I didn't have my glasses on and so I couldn't read over the clerk's shoulder. I don't know if the website (? which one) was wrong or she misinterpreted whatever was written there.
I'm still kind of wondering why Stoney hasn't commented on the situation with the q & a that never happened here ... or at least hasn't happened yet. What happened?Since there isn't even going to be a demo (amazing!!), please tell us what is going on Stoney!!! You are commenting on other threads but you don't seem to want to deal with this one ... even though you started it!!

Okay, the conference call is done, 2khockey.net is getting their videos and hands-on preview, and Operation Sports is getting their questions answered. Maybe now the questions stoney submitted over two months ago might get some attention.

You can play the Wii version with the standard motion controls, motion plus or the game pad. You may want to go read this Wii Game Play Mechanics (http://community.2ksports.com/community/insights/index.cfm?aid=955721&l=10).
