ron posted this... i thought id point it out to all... and bold what pertains to us
Hey all,
Welcome to the first weekly announcement provided by me at 2K Sports. The goal again is to provide you with collected thoughts from me on what we are up to at 2K Sports, and how I, in particular, am bringing us closer to the community. So let's get to it...
The week everyone anticipates every year is upon us. It's NBA Finals week. Coming from a pretty huge NBA fan, this is a big deal enough but at 2K Sports, it has become our annual time to announce our cover athlete. And this year will be no different. In a community exclusive, look for the cover announcement coming this Thursday right before Game 1 of the NBA Finals between the Orlando Magic and Los Angeles Lakers. Should be a riveting series, and I see Orlando winning in 6 for those want a prediction from myself. I will be opening up a pre-thread before the game starts to talk about the announcement, and then launching the official NBA 2K10 forum along with the cover athlete right after announcement. It's an exciting time for me, it's almost time to get cooking.
NHL is not too far from ramping up as well. I am really looking forward to that title this year, especially the Wii version which was so much fun last year. Should have a bunch to say about that over the next couple weeks.
Of course, right now everything is about The BIGS 2. I am sure you guys caught my second time in a commercial! But really, I have played early builds of this game and it is the most amazing thing ever. I have some GIGANTIC news about the game coming in next week's update (hopefully), maybe even before so be on the lookout for that.
Definitely a lot of things cooking. I am in the middle of redesigning our facebook page and building a BIGS 2 facebook page. Will have a official announce next week hopefully, but if you want a sneak peak as I work along on it, check it out here: http://www.facebook.com/pages/2K-Sports/6993196358. Let me give you guys a good peice of advice, it would behoove you to follow me on MY BRAND NEW Twitter Page (http://www.twitter.com/Ronnie2k) and my Facebook fan page (when I build it). I intend to use these as a place to get you guys some of the cool stuff you see us wearing or playing with in the office. And you will get to follow me on a continuous basis and see what I am working on!
On to the issues: We are still working on the gamertag linking issue with Microsoft.I got an update today and it sounds like we are quite close to having it worked out with them. I am sorry it has been frustrating and took some time to iron out. It's a huge deal to us, but took a while to get MS feeling the same way.
I know you guys are not huge fans of our server move as it pertains to the 2K8 servers going down. I am sorry about that but ultimately it will make our games more enriching to play. Many of you league people have seen the added option for Free Agent pool. Glad to bring that to you. Suggestions like that are always helpful.
So yep, lot's going on in what's one of the best weeks of the year. Be on the lookout for The BIGS 2 big news. See you on the boards...

NHL always gets left out. Us hockey fans are such a minority in the world of sports fans. How could anyone not like a sport that is exciting and full of action?

its blind prejudice
hockey has the creativeness and imagination of soccer... the aggression and physical play of football.... the explosive plays as basketball... and the hand eye coordination of baseball
the only reason people dont like hockey, is they have no real exposure to it

It really is the best sport there is. I also think many people don't like it because the rules are too hard to learn. Hockey has a pretty simple set of rules in my opinion. So people can learn all 12,000 rules of football, but are not willing to learn the few amount of rules that hockey has. I actually do not even know all of the NFL rules. Football is way harder to learn, yet everyone loves it. Football is also slow. Not enough time is spent playing. Hockey is always fast-paced. Maybe the people of today's society prefer slow, boring sports. It's funny with everyone wanting faster vehicles and faster computers, nobody wants to watch a fast sport.

Wow. Yet everyone knows the name of every single penalty there is in football. They practiacally know the rulebook word for word. When it comes to hockey, people could care less. It's their loss.

I just have one thing to say : Americans find an extremely boring sport like football fun but soccer is somehow boring. A sport where 300-350 pound men with gigantic guts are on the field is somehow more fun than one where you need to be in peak physical shape. A sport where there is a pause in play every thirty seconds is more interesting than one in which players, with few substitutions, are told to keep running for 45 minutes at a time with no break. Americans can figure out a nonsensical sport like football quite easily but have trouble understanding the few rules of soccer.
At the end of the day, Americans seriously make no sense. Apparently, for a sport to be deemed interesting, you need an announcer that DOESN'T have a British accent, who screams at the top of his lungs most of the time and makes ridiculous comments. You need to have a bunch of nobodies acting like they're superstars because they caught a friggin' ball but not athletes with true humility and modesty.
Now that I think about it, Americans seem to like sports where the athletes themselves are jerks and have larger-than-life personalities. Rapists and uneducated ****s in the NBA, brutes and arrogant grunts in the NFL and steroid-driven womanizers in the MLB. I have to admit that the generally-disciplined (except Sean Avery) athletes of the NHL and FIFA don't stand a chance.

Soccer players are ******s. Diving is for *****es and it's institutionalized into the sport. Also, you can't say that players run for 45 minutes straight because at any given time half the people on the field (yeah, I said it) are just standing there because they're over 50 feet away from the play.
I know soccer's an alright sport, but it's not that amazing. It's got nothing on hockey.

I'd have to say, being an American Hockey fan, I find your generalization of Americans extremly offensive. Just because Hockey hasn't taken as well as we would like, doesn't mean that the other sports that have are any more or less thrilling to watch. Football is a terrific sport with extreme violence and speed. Having played both college football and Jr Hockey, I can attest that both sports require tremendous atheleticism. Don't belittle other sports and my country.
There are many "rapists and uneducated" players in Hockey, but no media member cares to report them. It's not news worthy here.

Wow. This just came out of nowhere. But, anywho, allow me to try and explain Americans' fascination with their sports.
First and foremost, football is a violent sport. Linemen are hitting each other on every play. Tackles can involve more than one person crunching another person. There's a lot of hitting going on. And in a country where violence is more accepted than sexuality, it's easy to see why so many people like it. It also explains why many people say the best thing about NASCAR is the crashes, and why wrestling and MMA is popular, too.
But also, football is fairly unpredictable. You never know when a big play or a touchdown could happen. On any given play, something big could happen. And that gets people excited for every play. The same can be said for baseball. On any given pitch, a homerun could be hit, and that gets fans anticipating each and every pitch. Though, baseball can be boring to watch, especially on TV, it does have it's moments. Close games in the later innings can be quite exciting.
Soccer, and hockey to some extent, aren't as unpredictable as football and baseball. You can see the ebb and flow of the game and can see a rush and a good scoring chance build up. And it's quite exciting when that does happen, but since it doesn't happen all the time and is fairly easy to see happen, more people could say that it's boring. They have no real reason to hang on to every play or moment, instead, they can wait idly by until it's time to get excited. Hockey is similar to soccer in that build up, but it tends to happen much faster because of the speed of the game. Yeah, soccer and hockey each have some unpredictability to them, but it's not there at every moment, like in the other sports listed above. I will say that seeing that scoring chance develop and then seeing a goal scored in soccer is very exciting. And watching a 3 on 2 play in hockey end in a goal because of brilliant passing is great to watch, as well.
Basketball is nearly constant scoring and isn't as unpredictable, so the only real exciting thing are flashy passes and dunks. It's constant flow can be quite nice to watch, but there isn't much unpredictability to it. Because of that, basketball can be boring until the final minutes, but only if it's a close game.
For fans of each sport, they don't care if certain parts might be called "boring". Those fans who have a deep understanding of the rules and nuances appreciate everything that goes on and understand why it happens as it happens. But casual fans might not get it. I enjoy all those sports that I have discussed, and appreciate each sports' little idiosyncrasies, however, there are times when I get a little bored while watching any sport, but that's just me.
Oh, and for people who say they don't "understand the rules" of soccer, it can be interpreted as they either don't care for the rules cause they don't want to be bothered with soccer, or they don't understand the nuances of the game.

I just want to say that I have, since a few years, developed a stronger appreciation for soccer. I actually find it difficult to call it soccer because the truth is, it's football and it always was football. While American football and football both share the same origins, ONE became association football (soccer) and the other became RUGBY football. Therefore, the name of the game that the Americans are playing should be called 'Rugby' or 'Rugby with different rules to separate it from what is being played elsewhere.' Either way, Association Football is a sport in which when a true injury happens, the other team will simply, OUT OF RESPECT, give the ball to the team that just lost a player. I see it happen regularly and it is not part of the rules. That's right, they will PURPOSELY sacrifice their momentum and a chance at a goal and give the ball back to the opposition as a way to say 'sorry' for having unintentionally hurt a player. That never happens in the NFL or the NHL. In fact, it never even happens in the MLB. That, right there, is class and it makes me appreciate the game so much more.
Sure there is diving in soccer. It happens. However, it doesn't happen very frequently in league matches I've noticed. It happens all the time in international tournaments like the World Cup because the stakes are very high and the players want any advantage that they can get. However, when the stakes are lower, the players use their brains a little more. Winning a World Cup is a huge deal and your country will treat you like a hero forever if you were an asset to the team winning at any particular time. In fact, the way soccer fans talk about players is similar to the way they talk about legends from years gone like William Wallace. As such, their wanting to gain the upper-hand whether legally or illegally is fairly understandable. Nevertheless, it should be noted that referees PUNISH people who dive or fake. You can be yellow or red-carded for acting so it's not a regular and allowed part of the game.
As for insulting the Americans, it wasn't my intention to insult the country in general. In fact, I see the United States as being a great country and I respect it. However, it bothers me to know that they both don't understand soccer and blatantly REFUSE to understand it. The fact that a team is called 'Réal Salt Lake' is a testament to how idiotic some of the audiences there are (what is so royal about Salt Lake City pray tell?). It also bothers me that unless a sport carries a risk of permanent injury to a player, as does rugby football (NFL), hockey and even the MLB, nobody will give a crap. In fact, people there are absolutely in love with watching NASCAR races. That'S right, they enjoy watching cars going round and round and round and round ad nauseum. It'S not because they enjoy the race though: it's because every turn carries a risk of rendering any car uncontrollable, forcing it against the wall, leading to an explosion and a potential fatality.
With that said, how are Americans any different than the Romans who cheered for the lions who ate the Christians way back when? That's not an insult but an actual question. I expect the lot of you to respond and call me names for asking such a question given your insane sensitivities but I truly ask: how is this sort of thirst for blood different than that of millennia ago?

most ridiculous post ever. Americans make no sense? soccer > football? are u serious? soccer is a bunch of little wieners running around in short shorts, kicking a ball into huge nets. Im not saying its an easy sport, but when there are maybe 10 shots at the goal, with 2 goals a game, how boring is that crap. the 40 seconds between plays is nothing. you have obviously never been to an NFL game, because you really dont feel like there is alot of time between plays at all. It really does feel a million times different than watching on tv. and i hope your not comparing soccer to the CFL, cause thats not real football.

Actually, I think that anyone I know that watches both the NFL and the CFL finds the CFL more action-oriented. Besides, you can call soccer players wieners all you want but that just proves the fact that Americans only like brutes and grunts in their sports. Besides, I don't think any football player has a physique as perfect as Cristiano Ronaldo's.

the difference between Americans and romans are that there has never been a innocent person eaten in a NFL stadium by a wild animal.
also... dont discount the stradegy in football... its not all brutes.. there is a lot of reasoning and thinking that goes into the chess match that is football
you are also painting with a very broad brush to classify all nfl'ers as rapists.. just like saying all soccer players are weiners is not fair

thats completely untrue. americans love golf. what about that? nothing brute about golf. IDK who Cristiano Ronaldo is but have you ever watched football before? those guys are in great shape. Im not denying that cristiano isnt in great shape, i believe you that he is, but honestly, a pro athlete is a pro athlete. check football player stats and a guarentee their are plenty of guys who can run as fast, jump as high and do all the same crap as cristiano can. Just minus the soccer skills. i dont dislike soccer cause there is no hitting in it. i dislike it because i find it boring. golf is boring too, but i still love it.

Anybody can be buff like an NFL player. In fact, *I* am buff like a football player. However, I have a terrible diet and honestly have terrible endurance. Hence, I am big but not cut, sort of like an NFL player. In the case of Cristiano Ronaldo, he is muscular AND cut. In other words, there is not an ounce of fat on him because his job demands that he be able to run for 90 minutes at a time. Unlike the 'guys who stand around,' Ronaldo is in front creating scoring opportunities or taking them. When he is not in possession of the ball, he runs around to make sure that he is in the ball's path to GET possession of the ball. As such, he is constantly moving and is thus in peak physical shape, ESPECIALLY when compared to an NFL player.
I would suggest watching some videos to get acquainted with Cristiano Ronaldo. Might I suggest :

This discussion should have an own thread, but whatever.
CellFish, you may check out this site (http://www.bigsoccer.com/forum/) - mostly Americans, who discuss soccer there, quiet a number of them with a deep understanding of the sport. It's interesting to follow, how they react to the whole developement of the sport in their country and envision it.
About the MLS logos: It depends on what you are used to. To me, about every name and logo of North American teams seems ridiculous or at least strange. The MLS ones have a strange mixture of typical NA and artificial euro style ones, though, but they are changing.

Hand me down players? See this where confusion sets in. When I say the CFL is a much better game, that doesn't mean the players are more talented than the criminals that play in the NFL. I much rather watch a game thats 40-37 in the CFL than 3-0, 7-3, 14-3 in the NFL.

I am glad that someone agrees with me. I can't tolerate football because there are so many rules. There really isn't much more hitting than hockey, as most tackles are light. Big hits don't happen too often in football. Also, it doesn't seem that exciting watching a team trying to get the ball into an end zone as wide as the Great Wall is long. It is way too easy to score. Yet Americans love it for whatever reason.
I didn't think my other post would start a big debate. I guess the only way to get anyone posting on these forums is to start an argument!

What confuses people with hockey is the inconsistancy of calls. When I tell my son what a slashing penalty is and you see it all game long, or what interference is and it is continually not called, he becomes confused and gives up trying to figure it out. There needs to be more consistancy. That's why its hard to pick up the rules. Not to mention, its far better to experience a game live than on TV. It just doesn't translate well to television.

I agree, and some teams get totally shafted because of it like the Canucks. So many times Chicago would be pulling stuff all series high sticks to the face, then canucks player down on the ice and no surprise an odd-man rush for Chicago or something to give Chicago some momentum.
Had the ref's called it properly it would've at least gone 7 games.

lol oh come on. The Hawks had alot more skill and talent than the Canucks, as well as Luongo proved he is NOT a big game goaltender.

Maybe we will get gameplay news tonight or tomorrow to go along with the motion capture event.
That would be nice but I'm not holding my breath. If they want to release info great, if not oh well, I'll just have to glean what I can from other 2k hockey forums.
I just hope that maybe somewhere, somehow (wink, wink 2ksports.com)there will be a video or at least pictures and a write-up on the event.

hot off the press
Hey all,
Back for a jam packed blog of everything we got going on. So much happening right now, let’s get into it.
Alex Ovechkin was named our cover athlete for NHL 2K10 exclusively here on the forums on Thursday. The press release went out this morning and it will be announced to the casual hockey crowd on Thursday at the NHL awards. You can check the show out on Versus around 3 PM PST (red carpet, where Ovi will be doing a stunt along with at the show). Tonight, we get right to work with him as he is having an outdoor motion capture with Ryan Kesler and Randy Hahn at the Caesar’s Palace Plaza in Las Vegas at 8:30 PM PST. If you are a stone’s throw away from Vegas, drop on by and catch it for yourself. It’s outdoor and those of you who know the space well, it’s a really cool place to do something like this. Dropping a spectacle in the heart of the Las Vegas strip like that should really tell you the huge plans we have for NHL 2K10 this year. I will be attending and hope to have some pics for you guys by the end of the week. Check out the Ronnie 2K page for those: http://www.facebook.com/Ronnie2K/.
Congratulations also to the first twitter giveaway winners, proud new owners of NHL 2K9 shirts. (http://www.twitter.com/Ronnie2K). It’s going to be a common thing I do so be on the look-out. There will be less warning behind it next time! I am also going to be talking about some interesting stuff over the next few days so stay tuned to that!

Gameplay news won't be released until July according to past trends. People don't buy the games in June, according to your first ultimatums, you're already buying NHL 10 only and nobody's buying 2K10. So since they're already going to bomb, releasing info later won't hurt them any.

I know I wear rose colored glasses but this news is nice to hear. Its a nice dog and pony show for 2k, and the good pr can only serve to help bring the casual fan back to the game.

Typed from my phone. Please excuse errors
I'm excited to see some video of the event. But ill admit. I don't know how many people actually pay atention to the nhl awards show
Sharks, everything ron layed out for us last month has come to life this month. Let's let him do his work. They have a plan here that centers around not blowing their load 2 months before the game comes out. I can't say I blame them
I know we would all like a little more instant gratification, but a. Good show has building suspense

I think three months before release is the perfect time to start releasing information. It is not too soon and not too late. It is definitely better than releasing news three weeks before release.

I'm sorry you are not happy with the type of info
I'm not a big cover guy either. But again. Any sports game any game maker. The first thing they all announce is the cover boy
Now that we are getting through the first stages, I'm also hoping we get more meat

Ron's announcement from last week is misleading. He said that we will be getting a hint about a bunch of news hitting next week. That would mean we get a lot of news this week. It appears that we are not going to get any news this week though. Or will we...

In that case, just cut out Cindy Crosby face from the picture you keep in your underwear of him and paste it on top of Ovie's when you buy the game.
I know what you want though. You want pictures of the game. Everyone wants to see that. But we're not gonna get it until 2K's good and ready. Sucks, but them's the breaks. They're obviously going to stick to this "plan" of theirs, even while Rome burns around them. You can't change that. I can't change that. No one can, not even 2K.
So chillax, go grab a nice cold drink (Fruit Smoothie for me) cuz summer's here and forget about NHL 2K for the time being. When they come out with info, well, hopefully people will give a damn. Personally, I was quite happy to see all those hints from Cup and I'm following him on Twitter.
So 2K's marketing team can go to hell with their plan. I'm getting my info fix from someone who does care, and my life can go on.

You do worry that 2k's lack of marketing and promotional savvy provides some insight into the kind of thinking that is taking place throughout the company. At the very least, there appears to be a lack of urgency and a lack of recognition concerning 2k's current status in the marketplace. I think we'd all feel better if we sensed a higher level of awareness from the folks at 2K. Even if they improve their hockey game substantially, it's going to be a pretty hard sell because of what has gone on over last four years.
