View Full Version : Legendary stuff = ruined game

I am just voicing my opinion of an issue i have with the bigs 2 (demo). I think that the "legendary" aspect of the game has ruined an otherwise PERFECT game IMO.
The first Bigs was the best sports game ever. It had everything, it had massive plays, collisions, superfast running (which as far as i can tell is gone from this one) and big Homers, but it was not so far fetched that it lost some of its appeal when you are playing 'on-the-line' games.
The first game and this played perfectly, that is until 2k introduced LEGENDARY cr@p. The stupid catches that are robbed at the fence, the freaken catcher taking absolute rubbish catches where he flys up like freaken superman to eventually end up dancing his ridiculous ***** off on the dugout roof. When I take a catch by jumping from first base to land in Derek Jeter's lap at SS, i just cant believe it. It is absolutely bleeding pointless and rubbish. Gettin robbed at the fence is by far the worst of these plays.
That isnt to say that this is the worst part of the legendary addition, but it is of the legendary plays.
The worst is how far and in between the throws are from someone like Josh (WHY DID I PUT HIM IN CF) Hamilton, and someone like Dustin (IS CHUCK YEAGER FLYING MY ARM) Pedroia, for instance. It really peeves me off how this kind of stuff has such a negative impact on the game.
I am not here ranting and whining because i suck at this game, but rather that I am quite good at this game but I am disappointed in this.
I think the four hit big slam thingo is annoying as well, that has nothing to do with baseball IMO.
I am sure I am not alone in thinking these things. I really hope that the rest of the game has enough appeal to keep me playing, but i can foresee myself getting frustrated at playing this game.
Question though; will it be possible to turn off the legendary cr@p in multiplayer and normal game modes?

A agree with the big heat that I can only pitch to the first batter and there's always a home run at the end...
Yes, the legendary catches are stupid when the computer does it but it's AWESOME if I rob them off the walk-off homer etc. ;) I guess it always depends on the viewpoint...

If you are good enough to place your first pitch in a good location and nail it PERFECTLY you can end up getting all the hitters to swing and miss. I have struck out the "HOME RUN" hitter twice. It is possible to do with some practice and concentration. That's what makes this game more fun.

What I'll agree with you is, that it is annoying that the computer MAKES EVERY Legendary catch it attempts, while you as the user have to complete a mini-game to make the catch and have tendencies to miss it. I would like to see the computer miss more of these attempts. Other than this, I completely disagree with you on how Legendary catches make the game "crap" as you put it. First of all, I have yet to see someone jump from first base to make a LEGENDARY catch and land in the SS lap/area. Second, how is getting robbed at the fence by either a Legendary or regular catch a bad part of the game. You could do it in the first BIGS as well and you don't seem to have a problem with that do you? Finally, there is the ability to run "super fast". It's called using the turbo button, just like in the last BIGS. The thing that seems different is that there are different speeds at which you can run "super fast" based on the players overall running ability. Do yourself a favor, and try playing it some more before you get irritated by this game. It is literally leaps and bounds better than the original. Yes, it does have its "cheap" moments, but what game doesn't? That's why it's a game and not the real thing. Keep playing it and you'll notice that you're going to get much better at it.

NO.
I thought in the first Bigs it allowed you to tap a when running the line to get there faster, a fast throw to first would still get you but it was more bang-bang. As for the "getting robbed at the fence" its more like getting robbed in the 2nd tier. Its absolutely poo.
The basic core of the game is PERFECT, this aspect IMO ruins the fun.
Do yourself a favor and try playing the demo as much as i have and try find the fun side in the game when these crazy things happen all the time.
Pitching perfect is almost a cinch, and striking out the potential grandslam hit is relatively easy too, but it is too much for this otherwise WIN of a game.
I have this game preordered and i would like to think it has more substance and favorable factors than just the limited demo, but i still have my doubts.
I know it is a fantasy game, but hitting a nice shot over the infield should stay that way, and not in Chase Utley's glove 32 feet in the air.....

No, you can't hit A to run faster. I still have the game and have been playing it as of late, and you can't run faster unless you use turbo. In addition I've been playing the demo since it came out and I find it amazing. Yes, I will agree with you that you can get robbed too often, but I also believe it has to do with the fact that we are playing with All-Star teams and not everyday teams. There won't be that many Lengendary players on regular rosters, for that reason you'll be able to better direct your hits toward players that won't have the ability to make Legendary plays.

Computer does not make every legendary catch, not by a long shot.
And yes, that first pitch quality has an impact on every other pitch in a big slam.

Also, the legendary system adds a layer of depth, not take away from. First, the demo is using allstar teams. You won't find the quantity of legendary fielders on regular teams as you do on the allstar teams. They were offered to allow people to get a hang of the new legendary mechanics. The added depth is identifying who those players are, and to try and make contact without always hitting toward those players. I'm with Ron here too...I've seen the computer drop many legendary attempts. It really adds to the drama overall IMO.

exactly. a game between two regular teams won't have as many legendary catches. we went with the All-Star teams for the demo to ensure that everyone got a glimpse at the catches since they're new (and also to help get you psyched for the real All-Star Game in a couple weeks).

I played a game where the CPU had 5 chances to make Legendary Catches and missed all but 1. Just don't hit the ball to them. 75% of my homers hit to outfielders without Legendary Catch status has left the park. The running is still pretty fast too. I thought that the running was slow too, but I was holding the stick just left, not up and left.

I think a big part of it is that All-Star teams were used in the demo, while on real teams there will only be a few players with legendary powers at all.

The problem here (I think) is the legendary catches made him look for other stuff that was better in the first game (even though he was mistaken). I Do thinki twas a bad idea for 2K to make the game an allstar game, because allot of people don't catch on that these are the best players, and they can practicly all do legendary catches, (Would have done Tampa Bay vs. Phillly, next best thing) ina normal game, you have the option to aim your shot away from the good catchers, or just hope they don't do something awesome, which they don't do allt he time. (I hit one to the fence with CJ and whoever was there tried to make a great catch and tipped it over the fence) I played the first one and think this one is way better, but you have your opioinion I have mine.

All valid points, i do agree that it is probably justified by the players skills in the all star teams in the demo, but what happens when you play them in the the real game, will it be the same?
I may have been mistaken about the tapping of A to run faster, but i really thought it was a feature... Meh.
I think that it seems that its less about placing shots to get men on base but more of luck in finding a gap where superman isnt fielding.
I like the addition of the players individual and unique powerups though, like when Fielder comes on he gets a powerup, and Papelbon getting turbo (bugger its only on the first pitch though). But its a bit all over the shop. Jete's powerup is ok too the more you use it as it is what he is known for, being a clutch performer. The no doubts that Papi hits get a bit tedious too especially if you are trying for max turbo strikes and he clobbers you on perfect pitches but i guess thats a facet of the game.
I think i will cement my opinion when i get my hands on the real thing.
also, ten_titans, i think i was looking for other things to excite me, but i think that in comparison to the demo of this one (with the exception of ARods batting stance) everything was more fun and more realistic but stylised gameplay.
On that, what happened to Youks batting stance, surely if you have Ichiros and ARods sorted, Youks, and for the matter Jeters batting set ups could have been in there. I also think its missing Papis spit on the hands routine too.
Ill keep playing shall I?!

The game is not meant to be realistic. It's all over the top, and there's added over the top elements. However, the game is fun, and it needed extra additions to add more layers of depth. This is an excellent 2 player game, and it's more involved. I would never go into a game like this and expect all the authenticity that one would expect in a simulation offering. My goodness.

Yeah, the Big Papi power up is annoying as hell, but if he doesn't have any turbo, just nail him with a pitch. Or take the risks and pitch him close balls that stay out of the zone. If you walk him, try to throw him out at first.

I totally agree the Legendary Catches the BS Big slam grand slam BS! it just totally takes away from the fun experience, now i don't mind a challenge but that's total BS in my opinion and it always happens when your winning!!!!!!!!!!!

it would be better if like only half of legendary catches were caught
