Nets Using Rafer Alston as Trade Bait?

There's no guarantee that (Rafer) Alston will actually remain with the Nets when the 2009-10 season begins. He was included in the Vince Carter deal primarily because his salary made the deal work, but once October rolls around, there is likely to be a lot of interest in a starting-quality, veteran point in the last year of his contract.

Especially one like Alston, whose prestige soared this past season because he accomplished one of the most difficult of all NBA tasks for a point guard: taking over a team in the midseason, and getting it all the way to June.

Well there aren't many Nets fans on this forum. I don't know if anyone would want Alston on their team though.

Rafer is a good PG. I don't know if he is willing to accept the back up role yet, but he can be a good pick up for a lot of teams.

Rafer Alston > Mike Conley, Memphis
Rafer Alston > Beno Udrih, Sacremento
Rafer Alston > Steve Blake, Portland

Those are just out of the top of my head...
Portland can trade for him. They've been wanting a star PG and it would work out a little better if they are successful in signing Turkoglu since they both played together with the Magic.

Kinda mean though, when Alston says he's excited to be playing for your team and that he feels "home" but your planning to trade him right away.

I'll take Skip to my Lou on my team. Go ahead and take Bill Walker for him.

I'd trade Afflalo for Alston straight up. Would NJ?

There talking on the radio about how we need a point guard to fall back on (stuckey isnt a true point guard). So im thinking are remaining money will be spent on big men. I know NJ is shopping him. he can run an offense and hit the 3. I'd give up Bynum and a pick, or just Afflalo straight up for him. Would the Nets do that?

I really like Afflalo and I think he needs more playing time. But if my nightmare comes true and Detroit doesn't touch their roster for the remainder of the offseason than I'd trade Afflalo, since the SG is basically log-jammed and there is faint hope of double-A getting any decent minutes.

No, the Nets wouldn't do that. They already have a crowded backcourt in Harris, Dooling, Lee, CDR and Terrence Williams when he switches over go gaurd. Trading Rafer for another gaurd would be pointless. Afflalo wouldn't get any playing time.

Yeah, NJ's supposed to use Alston to bait someone with talent. And as much as I hate to say it, Afflalo isn't great talent. Afflalo for Alston is like LeBron for Kobe, it won't happen.

its not LeBron for Kobe. Its a young player with good upside for a past his prime PG. Talent wise its a good deal, but when they have CDR, Lee already at that position it doesnt work I guess.

But if we dont get a Point guard there is going to be trouble in Motown.
