Franchise mode has also seen its share of additions--notably in a new option for salary restriction known as "team budget." Instead of working with the salary cap (which is also an option in Franchise mode), your team owner will adjust your team budget based on how your team is performing. The owner will make these adjustments twice a year--during the offseason and before the trade deadline. Your team status will depend on many factors, not the least of which is the likelihood of your team making the playoffs. In addition, all of the other teams in the NHL will have status updates of their own, so if you're looking to build for a playoff run and have the available cash, you can check around the league to see which teams are looking to off-load some talent.
I love this idea. CPU teams actually doing whats in the best interest of their team. I know there will be ways around it for those who like to build dream teams, but for us who enjoy "struggling" to build a winning team this is nice.
Onto the overall tone of the article, I found it to be less than enthusiastic. Everything I read in the article pertaining to the game itself I found encouraging, but it seemed like every new or improved aspect of the game that was brought up the author expressed a sort of hesitance about it. Maybe it's me but I think the author should wait and critique the whole game before making statements like: Though it still has some ground to cover to return back to the simulation-style hockey that defined the NHL 2K series a few years ago, it looks like 2K Sports is set on changing the public's perception of the game. We'll find out how successful that focus is when NHL 2K10 is released on September 15.
If the author who offered the above statement did play and experience the entire game then I apologize, but if not, try and wait until the final product is released before making critical evaluations of a mode that takes much more than an afternoon preview to fully grasp. I know the author qualified his/her statement with "We'll find out how successful that focus is when NHL 2K10 is released on September 15," but that still doesn't negate the statements made prior to that qualification.

I wish they spoke more about stick handling controls. I sure hope I can stick handle and skate in this version.
I also wish that the one on one dekes and the "Ovi Dekes" weren't both mapped to LB + RS (360 users). Too many times I try to do a one on one only to have my player do a flip up and bat out of the air super star move. I don't like when IT decides which moves I wanna do.
Can't wait for 2k10 although, the players did seem to slow down when receiving passes again..... Otherwise, can't wait.

BTW, I LOVE the addition of the "line change cam". I used to use manual in 2k8 and down, but 2k9 I used auto and too many times I would get the puck deep, cycle and pass to the point and..........LINE CHANGE!!!!!! Love that I can see it now.

 My number one complaint with 2k9. I can't tell you how many times a game that happens to me.

I also hope that the dumps are higher than the gold glove defensemen that catch every soft dump I flip into the zone. I never knew Ozzie Smith could skate! Looking forward to some good dump and chase action. I am like Dump Masta B or Dumpy McDump.
High Loft
Outnumber
Stick lift
Kick under
Several Passes
Snap Shot
INCREDIBLE GLOVE SAVE!!!!!!!!!! ( I was a goalie, NONE SHALL PASS MY GOAL LINE!)

Gameplay looks great! AI spacing seemed realistic and not overly aggresive. It appears the ai actually plays its position and doesn't simply chase the puck like a pack of four year olds on the ice.
This is played with default sliders on pro level and it appears just a little slow. Sliders should be able to handle that though.
I was very impressed with the boardplay, in specific the pinning move/animation. I have to see more of course, but if you can call a teammate over to help that will be very cool. I'm assuming they have kept the kicking and elbowing moves in as well.

No mention of 5-on-5 team play in this. Could this be a good thing or a bad thing?

If you're referring to the Team-up mode from 2k9, then no I don't think that'll be back, but I'm not completely certain. User created teams with created players can play other user created teams online, hence 5 on 5. You'll also be able to play exhibition games with regular teams with as many players as you can invite.

How will the sharing rosters feature impact on line league play?

I posted on the 2k9 boards the other day for a final hurrah in the Team Up mode. I was thinking of signing on tonight somewhere around 7:00 eastern to see if we can get a 5v5 game, or even a 4v4 where one guy unlocks and controls the defensemen. Hope to see some of you there.

I am going to make a public team up unranked player match at 7 and see if anyone comes. I will leave it open until about 7:15 or so and then will either can it or play with whomever is there.

I like the looks of the starting lineups. Those look good. They need to tone the hits down. I constantly injure people up to 10 times a game.

Great preview! Personally, I love the new "line change cams"; they're going to be really useful during PP's and PK's.
Here's to hoping that 2K10 can bring some of that 2K5 magic back. 2k7 and 2k8 were decent games, but 2k9 had too many little things that bothered me. And that was my only hockey game last season!
