View Full Version : The dungeon? Sounds like censorship ...

Splitting up the forums so that the "good," positive people don't have to deal with anybody who isn't absolutely overjoyed with the 2K product ... sounds like a bad idea and the end of any real discussion.

The dungeon is where banned people go so they can dispute their ban if they feel the ban was unfair. No censorship there. Just a way to see and/or explain why someone was banned and if they really earned it or not.
The gold room is a place for selected members who have been good, dedicated members to post and discuss things without having to deal with the immature trash that can be found in the public forums. The gold room won't have flamers or immature kids there. That, also isn't censorship. It's a way to promote members to be better posters here. And if people are trying to be better members of these boards and not flame and other things as much, it'll benefit the boards as a whole.
So, please, explain to me where this "censorship" comes in? I don't see how having extra rooms for posting will censor anything.

Somebody is deciding what is "good" posting and what is "bad" posting and that somebody will obviously have his own vested interests and agendas (pro product, pro praise, anti-criticism, etc.) I think that comes pretty close to censorship and, if you choose to argue with the definition, then dividing up the forums is at the very least an inappropriate attempt to control and/or "guide" the discussions in directions 2K approves of. You did choose the name "dungeon," didn't you? Hopefully there will be no torture or waterboarding involved, especially for those troublesome, immature kids who want to know why there is no roster update. In the past, I would argue that your penalties/suspensions for "flaming" and other alleged offenses against humanity have not been doled out evenly and so why should we assume that will change?

its more for the NBA people
we dont have the huge amount of, well, kids who run on here and post a bunch of mindless stupid immature things
I'm not sure how often you dip your toes into the other forums... sometimes and can be hard for a few quality guys to carry on conversations with out somebody coming by and hijacking it... so they made the gold forum as a way for people to get a break from that
we really dont have that problem here... we all be gold round here

I check out the football forums once in awhile -- I used to enjoy NFL2K5 and I finally bought a Madden this fall -- but I wasn't aware of that kind of activity is taking place in the NBA forum. I have no interest in the NBA and so I never go to their forum. As you said, I haven't witnessed a lot of outragous behavior in the hockey forums ... although various people have seen fit to "suspend" me three times over four years here. Not for bad language or flaming (whatever that is) ... I'm not absolutely sure but, apparently, I was suspended for unwelcome opinions or having too much to say too often. I guess my own experiences in this forum color my attitude on this issue. I still believe that having somebody decide which posts are "bad" and which are "good" can be a dangerous proposition but, in the end, it is 2K's site. They can obviously do what they want with it.

i agree with you
but at the same time, having to read through the nba forums... i can understand why some might want to create a "vip" room
things are so much more intimate here, like a Tim Hortons... there its like a giant high school cafeteria

I think it's the hockey fan-base/players in general that tend to be more well manured/respectful...
I mean when it comes to the players I bet you could count all of those who have taken steroids on one hand in the past 5 years... Bet you can't do that with Baseball not to be stereotypical its just the league has a problem with them...
And the fans in general tends to be more well behaved (their are some rowdy venues at times) then say a NFL game...

Does it really matter? Why be in a bind about a couple of new features? It's a forum, and as long as you can give your opinion within, does it really matter?

Valid point, stoney. In the hockey forums most members more or less "know" each other, hence its easier to understand their comments. In other words, if I read a comment that is critical in nature posted by a member who's previous posts have been, by in large, fair and even keeled, I'll put a little more credence into that criticism. If the same post was written by someone who is often critical and hot-tempered then the criticism is taken with a grain of salt. We have the benefit of "knowing" our authors for the most part.
The one thing that does concern me though is the idea of classifying, or labeling, forums. I'm not sure I'm ready to go as far as mack and suggest censorship but it is a form of predetermining how one will read a post. I can envision a scenario in the future where any valid criticisms or suggestions coming from the dungeon will be brushed aside simply because of the forum they emanate from. "Consider the source, it came from the dungeon," could become a manner in which to simply ignore it.
On the other hand, criticisms or suggestions that flow from the gold room may gain more weight than they should.
From what I've been able to determine the moderators and people from 2k who read and participate in these forums are responsible, sensible thinking adults that wouldn't prejudice their opinions against certain posts based soley on the forum in which they were submitted in, but it is something to guard against. I'm all for a free and open exchange of ideas and thats what this forums allows to do, I hope that doesn't change.

all the dungeon is, is a place for suspended and banned people to appeal there ban
there really isn't supposed to be any conversation in there other than "i was suspended for this, this is why its wrong"
my understanding is if you are suspended or banned, and you try to go to the forums... the only "sub forum" that will show is the dungeon.. so that you can go there and file an appeal

I misunderstood the premise. If that is all the dungeon is for then there shouldn't be any issues with it.

quoting from a thread by 2K admin Ron:
"New Forums Introduced"
"The Dungeon -- Feel like you were unfairly treated? Want to vent some more to fellow banned bad boys? Now you'll have your chance. Welcome to the dungeon."
* * * * * * * * * *
I'm sorry, that STILL doesn't sound very good to me and it clearly appears as though there will be discussions down there for those deemed unworthy (fellow banned bad boys -- isn't that a bit strong if you're talking mostly about youthfull posters?) for the gold room, or whatever they are calling the "good posters" picnic area.
I believe there is some backtracking and revising going on here. Could be that the concept isn't being explained very well ... or it wasn't thought out thoroughly to begin with?

No, it's just you putting way too much thought into it.

Maybe you're right but, when you've been suspended three times and have never used any kind of bad language or made the kind of nasty references you often see here, you do tend to wonder who is making what decisions for what reasons.
