This game freezes (2k5) all the time and the franchise mode becomes unplayable after 2-3 years and players want more then teams can afford.

The crash is due to injuries, lok at general discussion forum, there is a workaround in there.
Now, for the salaries, if you have high paid players in your team to start with they will prolly ask for more. I picked lidstrom in my team in the fantasy draft, that was before i noticed that he had a salary of over 10 million/year. So i traded him for some really good stuff and less payrolls.
Get young players, you'll be able to keep them for the whole franchise lenght, and negociate long 7 years contracts with lots of incentive bonuses. The more time goes on the more money they will ask for so locking them in for 7 years at a cheap price is a great move.
Young players, like Nash, Cheechoo, Fleury, Kovalchuk, Heatly, Lecavalier don't ask for much at first
