I must admit that this is (easily) the best basketball game Sega has produced to date. I've owned every bball game sega produced since 2k1 and I love this game almost as much as 2k2(pro ball of course). I was slightly disappointed in the final product of NBA 2k4 that sega produced....but I am going to chalk that up as beginner's error w/ ESPN. Anywayz, on to the chitown legacy. I decided to start my legacy with ChiState Cougars and go from there. This contining post will be my little outlet to let everyone know how much I enjoy the game. I'll probably post results on a 3-4 game basis and to let you know I play every game on 14min/all- *edit all-american( i just checked)
BACKGROUND:
I'm starting year 3 of coaching the Cougars.
Year 1: 14-13, 3rd seed in Mid-Cont. Tourney..and lost to the #6seeded Valpariaso by 16 in the 1st round(MY GOD!!!!)
Syracuse wins it all........

Year 2: 20-11, Won Mid-Cont. Tourney for #13 seed in the big dance.
My hopes were soon thwarted by #4 seeded Louisville by 15 pts.
SYRACUSE ENDS MARCH MADNESS BY CUTTING DOWN THE NETS AGAIN!!!!

YEAR 3:????????

I recruited a lot of 3star prospects this year and revamped my ***. coaching squad(lol). We look to hit the top 25 this year and make to the sweet 16. HIGH HOPES?????MAYBE....stay tuned for more ESPN action with the UPSTART COUGARS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

P.S- I went to the club tonight.....didn't come up on anybody so this is how i vent dammit!!!!!!!!!!!!!(TIKI..that's for yo dumb azzZ)

The upstart Chicago Cougars have started off hot!!!! With wins against Maryland-ES(wipe the OT sweat off our foreheads!!!!) Alabama St., and Coppin St., the Cougars have really come out the gates fast. Our next opponent, the TCU frogs, may prove to be the first of many big games this year. We also are scheduled to match up against #20 Morehead St., Arkansas, and.......THE MARYLAND TERPS!!!!!!!!! But we don't want to get too far ahead of ourselves, right now(all eyes on the Hornfrogs) With the defensive upgrades made in the offseason I think the Cougars have a great chance to make the big dance and donate a little madness to march this season. However, the question in the distance looms:

With another winning season...will Coach Dillard stay in the KILLA CHI????
Stayed tuned for more Cougar action!!!!!!!!!!!!

You making it sound good. It's kinda like The Season on ESPN. I'll stay tuned! As for me, I'm starting over from scratch. I had to adjust the simulated minutes ****. I was playing 10 minute halves and had it simulating the computer at 20 minute halves. My team got no love because their stats didn't even out. I didn't have a single player make the all-conference 1st,2nd or 3rd team and I won the conference and national titles at Towson State. I think I'm rolling with Buffalo know that I got everything adjusted right.

lawcutta,

what did you set your simulated half length to. i have been playing 15-minute halves and simming at 20 but the only way i will get deep in my career legacy is if i shorten the games.

holla back and let me know what's good.

i'm playing with buffalo also. coincidence, i think not. i think they are one of the better, if not the best teams that are available for a career legacy.

We've played a couple more games this season....2 to be exact. First up, the TCU Hornfrogs.....GOT DEMOLISHED 86-72. 6 players in double figures and the CHIstate Cougars break 80 pts for the second time this season. Not only that but the Cougars are making a little buzz in the polls for the first time in Coach Dilllard's 3-year tenure.

BUT WAIT THERE'S MORE!!!!!!!

Next opponent: 6-1 PENN ST. Nittany(what the he!! does that mean anyway?) LIONS vs. 4-0 Cougars early season powerhouses maybe???

The Lions come out on all 16(not 4)cylinders and STEAMROLL the Cougars by 84-53!!!!!!! Are the Cougars real this year....or are they ju st another member of the long list of pretenders? We will see....next up J-Ville and the(previously #20)unranked, but always dangerous Morehead St. What do you predict????? Stay tuned sports fans!!!!!

Seriously this is a really cool thread...And Yeah... What the He!!s Nittany...
Are u simming or Playing?

December 7th, 2003, 09:32 PM
Side note: to my boy who asked...i play all the games man...export the rosters and simulate the ESPN NBA season...as the TWOLVES. I can't really get into the NBA game because I can't find slider settings that give me realistic stats....and that's what I am all about with bball sim games...otherwise I'll play NBA STREET.

Welcome back to the ESPN's text basketball drama: UPSTART COUGARS?

1-5 J-VILLE VS. 4-1 COUGARS
The Cougars are about 1/4 of the way through their third year and this year seems to have its own share of ups and downs. When we last left the Cougars, they were licking their wounds after a 30 pt wax job by PSU(I guess they didn't like the Nittany joke!!!) Anyway, the cougars went back home to the CHI and hosted Jacksonville(DUVALLLLLL!!!!!!! for my Florida peeps). The Cougars assumed they where going to give DuVaL County's finest a CHIstyle azz whoopin...but J-ville would have none of it. SOMEBODY CALL THEM PEOPLE AND TELL THEM THE BARN'S ON FIRE!!!!!!!Cougars barely leave the burning barn alive....92-90. With the Cougars SUPER SOPHMORE FORWARD....WESLEY GREEN....droppin 38 in the game 10 in OT.

5-1 COUGARS VS. 1-1 MOREHEAD ST.
The dam COCKY COUGARS go into Ohio Valley Conf. with a pocket full of jokes like, how much MOREHEAD they were going to get since they were 5-1 and how much Morehead could do for them and what not. Little did they know that the Morehead players didn't give it...they recieved it with a 67-71 victory over the Cougars. All the Cougars could say afterwards...was DAMmit man!!!!!!!

And the saga continues......

Hey hoops fans!!!! Got some updates for your Upstart Cougars:

After the loss to Morehead St., Coach Dillard sends the team through 7 23-hr days of practice, lockerrooms had cots and the gym had sleeping bags. Up next were the struggling 0-5 Trojans of OURKANSAS(arkansas)-little ROCK. The Cats after all that practice had no problem executing and cruised to a 74-57 victory. Did I mention that the cats are #10 in the nation in scoring at 79.6 ppg.

THE ONLY WAY A PIG SOUNDS TOUGH=RAZORBACKS

The COUGARS head back home elated after the strong victory, but knowing that the next game will not be that easy. Two days later, the Cougars are preparing to face the #22 Ranked (7-1) ARkansas Razorbacks. The game goes back and forth the whole game, and with 41 seconds to go game tied at 70....Power isos on the Razorback's star PG....crossover...he's fouled but misses the shot. Power steps to the line for two and drops the first FT. Pressure is on for the second.....(and the phone rings!!!!!DAMMIT JIM!!!!!!! and of course someone is trying to sell me a damn sattilite dish!!!) But back to the game, focus is gone and Power still makes the 2nd.....the razorbacks bring the ball down court...and the Cougar's STAR SF, Wesley Green, is no where near his man.... and the guy drops a 3(two in his wide open eyes, and one in his wide open mouth). Razorbacks up 73-72...time for one last shot...they give it to GREEN...no good. Razorbacks rebound and the game ends at 74-72. Such a great game but unfortunately the Razorbacks steal one at the Dickens Center.

After the previous game, the next seems a little not too great....(2-2) Mid. Tenn. St. just didn't have the firepower to keep up with the Cougars. The Cougars go to Tennessee and win easily....70-59 which brings their record to 7-3 with losses to Penn State, Morehead, and Arkansas. The coach finally started recording stats of all the Cougar players that made a major impact in the game.( the game was also off a little because I was trying to tweak my sliders to bring down the extrordinarily high FG%)

Big Five STATS:
PG-Power: 9pts 6ast

SG-Massey: 9 pts 5ast 3stl

PF- Richard 14pts, 8 reb 3 ast

C- Little- 11pts, 25reb(4 off) 6 TO
(can you guess who almost had a triple double in TO)

Green-20pts 3reb 4ast 5 TO

Significant Team Stats:
54% shooting/ 41% FG shooting for opponent
21 TO(damn we couldn't hold on to the ball)
11 offensive rebounds(killin 'em on the glass)

Stay tUned man, for more ESPN action!!!!!!!

(8-4) Cougars vs. (8-1) Maryland Terps

Post Game Interview with Coach Dillard after 109-101 Double OT loss to Maryland

Reporter #1: "Coach, would you consider this one of the best games ever?"

Coach Dillard: "Actually, to date this is the best game I've ever participated in, even though we were on the wrong side at the end. I commend my players, my coaches and of course the Terps for a job well done."

Reporter #2: "Coach Dillard, what do you think you could've done differently
to end up with a different outcome for your team?"

Coach Dillard: " I don't think things could've gone any differently. Our guys went out there and put everything on the line and if they are out there giving 110%, I'd be a fool to ask for more. I just think we were a little thin after that 1st overtime with Sam(Power, jr starting pg), Al(Massey, fr starting )sg, and Paul(Viegas, fr reserve pg) all fouling out. Terrance(Barrett , so reserve pg) did everything, he scored 17pts had 4 assists, he had 2 blocks. S*#t, he did everthing he could including scoring the last 7 pts just to get us to the double overtime. If that's not a heck of an effort I don't know what is."

Reporter #3: "Coach the stats show that you guys had 26 turnovers, compared to 18 for Maryland, don't you think that could've made the difference for you guys?"

Coach Dillard: "Boy, you are definitely the genius of the group, huh? Like I said, if our men give 110% that is the deciding factor in my mind. Justin(Little, jr starting C) gave me 21 pts and 12 boards, Wesley(Green starting so sf) gave us 25, with 10 in 2nd half and 10 in the 2 overtimes. I told you, even though we lost I'm satified with our effort and this shows that we have the ability to beat those major schools in a schoolyard fight. And next time we will. End of questions, I gotta go get on bus back to Chicago and prepare for the UMKC (University of MO-Kansas City)game next week...you can talk to me then TA-TA!!!!!."

****End of Interview*****

(8-4) ChiState Cougars vs. (3-7)UMKC Kangaroos

After the game, Coach Dillard sets at his desk computer and thinks to himself, "Thank God, I get to come home for an easy win every now and then." He begins to enter the box score results into his MS Excel Spreadsheet to look at in the morning.

Score: 70-52
Significant Team Stats: 52% fg, 14ast, 14to, 44reb, 16 off reb, 3 stl, 3 blk
Significant Opp. Stats: 39% fg, 13ast, 10to 23reb, 9 off reb, 9stl, 2 blk

Player of the Game
Justin Little(Jr Center) with 10pts, 12reb 1ast/stl/to

Player to Watch:
Sam Power(Jr PG) with 6pts/1reb/5ast/5TO 33% 3pt(2-6)

Injuries:
Reserve Senior PF Chester McKnight(Springfield, Mo), sprained wrist out for 2 weeks

Note to Self: Soph. SF Paris Mitchell should fill Chester's role well. I wonder if will play well enough to take the senior's spot in the rotation.

(5-4) Oak Union College vs. (9-4) Chicago State

Final Score: 66-78 Cougars had 12 tasty birds to eat tonight!!!!!

The Oak Union College Cardinals, who are normally a perennial Mid-Cont. Conference powerhouse, were BB-Qued with honey mustard tonight....(mmm....mmmm!!!!!) The Cougars easily handled the OUC Birds without a big game from their biggest man, Jr Center, Justin Little. Little scored 11pts with just 4 rebounds for the evening. However his Freshman backup, Quinton Downey, scored 11pts and grabbed 5 boards in just 11minutes. Other notable efforts included:

Guard, Sam Power 13 pts, 4 asst
So Forward: Wesley Green, 10 pts, 7ast, 3blks, 2/4 from 3pt land
So Forward, Paris Mitchell, 10 pts 4 reb, 2 ast
Jr Forward, Antwan Richard, 8 pts, 13 reb(4off)

So all in all it was a great Team effort. This brings the Cougars team overall record to a respectable 10-4(3-0) and things are looking really good for the Cougars.

4-7( 1-1) Southern Utah vs. 10-4(3-0) Chicago State

Tragedy Hits Home!!!!

The Cougars got of the bus, (no we can't afford planes yet!!!)and after 28 hrs on the bus, they were happy to finally be on solid ground. Now the upperclassmen were already used to coming out to Utah, but the freshmen were in awe. Freshman Guard, Paul Viegas, looked at the school that accomadates just over 5,000 students and yelled, "Hey, who moved my high school way out in the desert, lol???"
When it was gametime, the Cougars came to the gym a little unprepared, seeing that both AC's left scouting reports in St. Louis, but could only the team, "uh, the are dangerous if you underestimate them?" As the game began, the Chicago State Cougars pounced to an early lead. However midway through the 1st half and up by 6, the SUU PG Guard takes its to the hole and the extremely quick freshman, Paul Viegas, steps in front to
take the charge. BUT AT THAT MOMENT, TRAGEDY STRIKE......Paul falls akwardly to the floor...and doesn't get back up....HE's hurt. The team trainer, takes Paul to the lockerroom to find out what could've happened. By halftime, the team finds out that Paul had a couple of severe tears in his tricep muscles when trying to break his fall from the charge. The team is shocked, and comes out of the second half ready to win one for the fiery freshman who will be sidelined for the rest of the season. Though only shooting 39% from the field...the Cougars pull out the easy victory 55-40. As a side note, So. PG, Terrance Barrett has contined to so well in a relief roll for the struggling Freshman, Albert Massey, he asked for a starting spot as SG, and the coach is considering it....stating, "I play people for results, if you don't earn the spot...expect to transfer azznheat with the pine furniture."

5-8(3-2) Oral Roberts Golden Eagles vs. 11-4(4-0) Chicago State Cougars

RUN OF THE MILL WIN

Still reeling from the loss injury to promising Freshman PG, Paul Viegas, the Cougars were happy with the win vs. S. Utah, but dissappointed the cost of the win. They headed back home ready to face a very streak Oral Roberts Squad that showed flashes of greatness every so often. However, this definitely wasn't one of those flashes. In fact, I would think that the Golden Eagles didn't want any memories of this game losing 62-50 to those ChiState Cougars. The Cougars shot a questionable 42% from the field while the Eagles shot an even more dismal, 35%. The Cougars got great production out of the POTG, Justin Litte with 10pts, 19 reb, and 4/5 FT shooting. JR Point Guard, Sam Power added 9 points, 4ast, and 3blks(and he's only 6-1), with Soph. forward, Wesley Green also chipping in 13 pts and 4 ast. It was a great team effort, but Coach Dillard feels that the team is getting a little lax and may be in for a surprise soon if the sub-par (especially FG%) play continues.

12-4 Chicago State vs. 11-3 Texas A&M-Corpus Christy

Deja Vu, or Winning in his Sleep?

Coach Dillard had a wild dream last night. He dreamed that he was no longer a coach of the Cougars, but a Store Mgr. for a popular retail chain that came home at night, very tired from 11-12hr days and decided to turn on an XBOX? He owned this great game called ESPN College Hoopsand played it a lot more than the disappointing Pro games. Now in his real life, he was readying himself and his team for a big game against Texas A&M(corpus christy of course!!!). But in his dream, instead of playing the game, he accidently pushed a button to simulate the game, and his team won big 86-61. Suddenly, he woke up. The game was tomorrow, and when tomorrow came the team won 86-61. Wow, talk about deja Vu!!!!! But the next night when he went to sleep, he thought had this crazy dream, where some guy name Neo met up with him and told him he was caught in a simulated world. Coach Dillard thinks to himself, yea right!!!!!!

13-4(5-0) ChiState Cougars vs. (4-2) 8-8 W. Illinois Leathernecks

Overconfidence........
The Upstart Cougars went down to Peoria to face the W. Illinois Leathernecks. One word describes this game, OVERCONFIDENCE. The Cougars were on a roll winning 5 straight.... but as Coach Dillard thought, their play was getting sloppy and they were only winning because they were playing unworthy teams. Now, the Cougars met up the surging Leathernecks who had won 3 of their last 4, and were 4-2 in conf. play. The Cougars were overmatched defensively, and the Leathernecks held the high scoring Cougars to just 20 1st half points with 33%fg and 9 turnovers. In the 2nd half, the Cougars continued their horrible play committing an additional 11 turnovers in the 2nd half and ending up losing the game 57-70. Hopefully the Cougars will learn to respect every team, every game or else they will not make it far int eh Mid-Cont. Tourney.

13-5(5-1) Chicago State Cougars vs. 4-11(2-5) IUPUI Jaguars

The Upstart Cougars came out and blistered their opponents 74-39. Unhappy about the loss to W. Illinois, the Cougars had no mercy for the Jaguars shooting 64% from the field while holding the Jags to just 32% shooting. Most of production came from the bench:

Soph. PG, T. Barrett 14pts 3ast
newly activated, redshirted soph pg H. Carmichael 2pts, 9ast, 1blk(at 5'5 big ups to short PG's!!!)
Fresh. C, Q. Downey, 17pts 5reb

and the starters helped out too with:
Little contributing 14pts and 9reb
Power with 4pts and 6ast
Wesley Green with 4pts, 5reb, 1ast/stl

Great Team effort and Coach Dillard is very pleased with his team's play today.

(thanx to everyone who does take the time out to read this *****!!!!!)
Revenge is SO Sweet!!!!

.......with his capture President Bush finally IRONICALLY moves into a good position going into an election year.......our final question is where is Osama???? We now welcome you back to our regularly scheduled program.

Welcome back hoops fans, the Upstart Cougars have been on a major tear of late beginning with their ultimate revenge/dismantling of the W.Illinois Leathernecks. The Cougars held them to just 26%...yes you heard me...26% shooting from the floor, while blistering the Leathernecks for 66pts off 50% shooting on the floor. POTG, Wesley Green, hit 'em up for 21...including 10 straight pts to start the game. Green wasn't alone though, Sam Power(PG) added 9 pts, 8ast, and 5reb, while last year's Mid Cont. Conference rebounding leader, Justin Little continued domination of the glass with 14reb, and 6pts. The downside for the Cougars was the fluke injury of Quinton Downey, the promising freshman center who tore and abdomenal muscle celebrating after a dunk....and is now out for the season(I mean there was honestly no collision, dude was just hurt!!).

Next the Cougars met, the Oral Robert Crusaders and this was definitely a game to watch. The Cougars, up by six at halftime, came back out the lockerroom, as cocky as Kobe in a Bennett College dormitory. Unfortunately, so were the Crusaders, the 3's started raining from everywhere and halfway through the 2nd half, the Cougars were down by seven. But with play of Jr Guard, Sam Power(13 pts, 9ast, 2/3 3pts, 1stl/blk), the Cougars came back down the strecth, and win a close one by 2, 60-58.

Finally, we reach another conference rematch, with SUU. Again, SUU plays very stingy defense holding the Cougars to just 35% shooting in the first half, and lead 29-23 at halftime. But again with outstanding play by Power(16pts, 5ast), and Jr F Antwan Richard with 10pts 10reb(4off), and 2ast....the Upstart Cougars are able to come back and blow the game open 65-49.

There's just 5 more regular season games for the Cougars who could easily run the table with solid play....Stay Tuned sports fans(and thanks to everyone taking time out just to read this)

now that I know people do actually read this...i'M going to keep it UP, thanx for the feedback everyone!!

And you know who's favored to win the Mid. Cont. Conference Tournement????

Welcome back Cougar fans,

The SEASON IS OVER!!!!!!!!!!! Last time we left you, the Cougars had won 3 straight and were looking to run the table with their last 5 games(all conference games too). And guess what ya'll, THEY DID IT!!!(i can't find the little envelope I write lil' game stats on so....you'll have to take my general word on it this time). So you guessed it...the Cougars won 8 straight to end the season....very, very hot!!!!!! The last win was a big offensive game to seal the #1 seed in the Tournament(vs. Valpo, 94-85). So now your UPSTART COUGARS, have gone 14-2, in conference and 22-6 overall. Coach Dillard has hit the goal of winning 70% of his regular season games, and has had back to back winning seasons. He's now 57-32 as Cougar head coach, and the off-season may prove to be some very interesting times. But back to the present, and the seeding for the tournament is as follows:

#1. Chicago State 22-6 ( 14-2 ) vs. #8 Centenary 9-19 ( 4-12 )
#2. Valparaiso 16-10 ( 13-3 ) vs. #7 Southern Utah 9-17 ( 6-10 )
#3. Oakland Union 15-9 ( 10-6 ) vs. #6 IUPUI 9-18 ( 7-9 )
#4. Oral Roberts 10-14 ( 8-8 ) vs. #5 W. Illinois 10-15( 7-9 )

Now the Upstart Cougars are taking ALL postseason play, game by game. Both wins to the Centenary Gents earlier this year were by over 20 pts, with the last win, 84-40. Hopefully for the Cougars, the Gents will continue to be an easy win. Can't wait to see what happens???? While you wait...go ahead and check the other Killa Chi.....Legacy Post...[WHO DO YOU THINK DESERVES TEAM MVP THIS YEAR. GREEN, POWER, AND LITTLE ALL HAVE BEEN VERY CONSISTENT THIS YEAR......I GUESS WE SHALL SEE???? STAY TUNED.....

1st Round, Mid. Cont. Conference Tournament

22-6 (14-2) Chicago State Cougars vs. 9-19 (4-12) Centinary Gents

The Upstart Cougars came out the gate a bit sluggish defensively and the Gents definitely came out to play. By halftime, the game was still close 35-31(Cougars lead) with Wesley Green lighting up the scoreboard, for 16pts of his 22pts in the first half. However the 2nd half was a completely different story. The Cougars bench came up big, and Soph. Guard, Terrance Barrett begin torching the Gents from everywhere, at one point Barrett scored 10 straight points and that opened it up for the Gents. The POTG, Justin Little finished with 10pts, and 16boards, while Jr F., Antwan Richard followed suit with 4pts and 10reb to round out team contributions. Due to foul trouble, Power only had 2pts but added 6 assists. The game ended 71-54 and the Cougars were very pleased with the win. The Cougars next
opponent: Oral Roberts. They handled the W. Illinois Leathernecks easily, 64-28, but can they matchup with the Cougars????????

(23-6) Chicago State Cougars vs. (11-15) Oral Roberts Golden Eagles

The Cougars came in to the Kansas homecourt with a Jay-Z mentality( FOCUSED MAN!!!!) and jumped all over the Eagles like ahungry fat kid and a slice of sweet potato pie. The Eagles were "out-hustled, out-matched and out-coached", losing to the Cougars 66-40. The main difference here was the rebounding where the Cougars had an astounding, 38-24 advantage. Of course, POTG(and Team MVP, forerunner go vote!!!!) Justin Little led the way with 6pts and 13 rebs. So its here again, the conference tittle game and it matches up the same two teams from last year.....the Upstart Cougars vs. Valpo. The Cougars won both head-to head meetings this year, but of course this is post season so that is irrelevent here. This meeting will decide who gets that automatic 1st bid to the big dance and the Cougars are feeling confident(but not cocky). Stay tuned for more ESPN action with the ChiState Cougars........

SAY IT AIN'T SO!!!!!!!

The Cougars who played so well this year, didn't have enough to pull it out ya'll. In the conference finale, the Valpo Crusaders brought the new TRUTH to the Cougars, and his name is Anthony Hutchinson. He scored 34pts with 8 assists, 4 steals and 3 boards. And yes, he did all of this at the PG, position. The Cougars had no answer for the Crusaders domination at the freethrow line where the Cougars did make 12/13 freethrows. The other side is that the Crusaders shot 23/34 freethrows keeping many of the Cougar starters on the sidelines. Another big reason for the loss was the offensive rebounding domination exerted by the Crusaders 12-4. Finally, the Crusaders got unheard of support from their bench when Hutchinson wasn't on the floor. The Crusaders bench outscored the Cougars 43-28 and that was probably the biggest difference. So with that being said, the Cougars lose the conference title game 86-97, and get to watch the NCAA Tournament in the TV room next to the cafeteria(lol).

[u]Chicago State University Press Conference on D. Dillard's Decision

Reporter #1: Coach Dillard its been reported that because of the great job you've done here at Chicago State there would be a number of schools after a coach of your calibur. Is there any validity to those rumors?

Coach Dillard: Is there some secret reporter code that states:" the first question must always be the dumbest". Man, I can tell you don't work for the Trib. I'm not even going to entertain a ******* question like that. Next.
(laughter from the entire room)

Reporter #2: Its widely known that Hampton University is looking for a good new coach, we know you've interviewed for the position. It has been said that you are the front-runner for that job, but considering it is one of the biggest rivals of your alma mater, Florida A&M are you still considering that position??

Coach Dillard: I knew somebody would ask about that. Yes, I was offered the position, no I'm not going to accept it. Like you said, I wouldn't feel right being on the other side of the Rattlers. Here in Chicago, I'm at home, you know, where i grew up. But my other home would definitely be at FAMU, so playing them 2 times a year as the opponent wouldn't sit well with me. So again,I'm telling you just like I told Hampton, nothing personal...well that one is all personal....but I'll respectfully decline.

Reporter #3: I'm not like everyone else, we all knew you were going to pass that position up...Look Coach D, what's up with Boston College???? That's the reason we are all here. Are you going to BC????

Coach Dillard: Thanks, Jeff. Someone who is very direct and to the point. But its ironic, my answer isn't to the point. BC, and a move to the Big East is the best opportunity I've had so far in my career. I'd get the chance to win against the likes of Miami, Seton Hall, and Syracuse. Not to mention a chance to build a struggling program, hopefully to championship status. Which is exactly what I'm doing here. What would I look like to my guys if I leave after 3 years? How could be leaving before Justin does(room laughter and cheering from players and alumni). I'm not going anywhere this year, we've got a NCAA Tournament to make next year and I wouldn't want to do it with any other group of kids. (more cheering)

Reporter #1: Coach Dillard......
Coach Dillard: Sorry, bruh. You had your chance better luck next time...I'm out!!!!!!PEACE(laughing while leaving)!!!!

YEA RECRUITING!!!

A 24-7 record will do wonders for your recruiting ability!!!! Last year the Cougars had to scrape and fight for a couple of 3 star recruits...but this year is different. There are actually4 star recruits(not even homegrown...) seriously considering ChiState as a place to play college ball.

Now after a grueling 5 week process, Coach Dillard and his AC's have seached far and wide for talent to help the team. With 5 PG's on the roster, Coach Dillard had to definitely look for a swingman or offensive minded SG to help solidify the offensive side of the ball.
For this void, the Cougars recruited their 1st 4-star recruit, Drew Banks out of Dayton, OH. He was ranked in the nation at #176, and his 6'4 217 lb frame looks to cause havoc across the NCAA ranks.

Along with a SG, Coach Dillard and his staff were looking to beef up inside. With both starting seniors, Center Justin Little and Forward, Antwan Richard graduating this year, the team would need a serious upgrade. This came in the form of 6'10, 236 lb center, 3-star recruti,Russ Morgan(Aurora, Il) and 6'8 249 lb, redshirt freshman Jack Violette(Evansville, Il). Coupled with the return of the promising Sophmore, Quinton Downey(torn abdonmenal muscle, last year) the Cougars look to have a very deep frontline this year.

To make the 12 man roster, Coach Dillard cut sophmore PG, Ebi Tyler( sorry man) and Jr. Center David Iati(never liked his work ethic), redshirted Jr. SG Archie Ball, and Soph PG, Paul Viegas(loves their talent on offensive and defensive ends, respectfully). So our final starting roster looks like this:

Starters:
Senior PG. "The International Man of Mystery", Sam Power Eau Claire, WI

Soph. SG, "Big Up Al", Albert Massey Chicago, IL

Junior SF, "Pro4Sho", Wesley Green Hammond, IN

Senior PF, "Another Highlight Already?", Antwan Richard Hatton, KY

Senior C, "The Green Giant", Justin Little McGaw Park, IL

Reserves: T. Barrett(Jr. PG), Q. Downey(Soph. C), P. Mitchell(Jr. F), J. Violette(RFR, C), D. Banks(FR, SG), H. Carmichael(Jr. PG), R. Morgan(Fr. C)

Starting ANEW!!
So welcome Cougar fans to Season 2 of the Upstart Cougars saga. There are a lot of surprises ahead and the Cougars are setting for nothing less than greatness this year. Last year they had the Conference's Leading Scorer, Wesley Green who is now a junior and only that more dangerous. Seniors, Justin Little, Sam Power, and Antwan Little have seen the change in their team and they are attributing it all to Coach Dillard. Now a start of a new season with big non-conference games against LaSalle, Boston College(go figure!!!), Utah State, Arizona, and Xavier...the Cougars have big dreams but Valpariaso, the reigning Mid-Cont. Conference champs may have something to say about that....so strap yourself on....and take another ride with the Upstart Cougars!!!

PURE DOMINATION!!!!!

Those Cougars are at it again. This time its the season opener vs. Lasalle in LaSalle's home gym. To make things worse for LaSalle, Wesley Green has gotten 2 inches taller and 12 lbs bigger. He's now 6'8 218 lbs of scoring, plus the 2 inches gives him a nice little rebounding advantage. Add this to the Cougars already offensively explosive team, you get a 78-47 arce whoopin for the Explorers. By halftime, it was already over, 40-17. The Cougars "New School Fantatastic Four" Green, Power, Little, and Richard torched the Explorers for 58 of the 78 scored. The POTG honor was given to Justin Little(14pts, 12(3)reb, 3ast, 2stl, 2blk) though both Green(22pts, 10reb, 2ast, stl/blk) and Power(14pts, 9ast, 2blk) had great games. If this is any indication of the season to come.....things are looking great for the Cougars this year!!!!

for those who really are interested and want to know, I really didn't start playing EVERY game until Season 3....about when I found out how to tweak sliders to get realistic games. I am a store mgr. at a popular retail store(no not a game store) and work about 55-60 hrs a week, I play on avg. 1- 2 games a day on days I work, and A WHOLE LOT MORE ON DAYS OFF. I have a bunch of XBox games but since I've bought NCAA, its about all I play. On top of that, I don't have cable so when everyone is watching HBO I'm playing NCAA. I hope that answers some questions on my time mgmt skillz :D

We now return to our regularly scheduled program.....

(1-0)Chicago State Cougars vs. (1-0) Iona Gales(sp?)

Chicago State looks like the real deal this year. Looking better than any Fantastic 4 or Fab 5, the Cougar starters began lighting it up from the opening tip off and didn't look back. Seemed like every starter was trying to put up at least 20 points a piece. By halftime, the Upstart Cougars surged to a 48-33 lead. POTG honor went to Justin Little, (aka the Green Giant) yet again with a monster game with 10pts 16(3)rebs 2ast 1stl/blk. For the 2nd straight game, POTG honors could've been extended to at least 2 other players, with "Mr. Pro4Sho" Wesley Green scoring 20pts while picking up 4(2)reb, 1ast, and 2blks. The "International Man of Mystery" Sam Power scored 15pts while dishing out 5 assists and "The Talented Mr. Richard", Antwan Richard showed flashes of greatness, with 18pts, 9(3)rebs, a steal and a blk. The Cougars cruised to an easy 83-64 victory, and these guys are starting to look like they are in a league of their own. Therefore they shall no longer be referred to as the Fantastic 4.......YOU MAY CALL THEM LXC, the LEAGUE OF EXTRAORDINARY COUGAR MEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!(I know its chezzy as he!! but i couldn't think of anything else, dammit!!lol)

Newsflash: Cougar found Mauling Eagles

The ChiState Cougars are definitely a vengeful bunch. It seems like the players took it personal that Boston College tried to lure their coach from them and TALK ABOUT A WAX JOB!!! With 9:49 left in the first half, the BC Eagles star F forward R. Warden, picks up his 2nd foul and goes to the bench. Then with 9:13 still left in the first half, the Eagles other starting forward, R. Wallace picks up his 2nd foul and goes to the bench. And with 8:49 left in the half, Senior Justin Little completes his 2nd "old-fashioned" 3pt play putting the Cougars up 14-1 and basically putting the game away VERY, VERY, early. At halftime though, the Eagles did manage to make a little dent in the marginheading to the lockerooms with the score just 39-30. As the 2nd half unfolds, An unusual blow is struck to the Cougars. For the 1st time in his 4 years at Chicago State, Senior PG, Sam Power(The International Man of Mystery) is hurt and out for 2 weeks with a hip flexor injury. Surprisingly, this must've also got the team amped because after his injury, the team went on an 18-0 run that buried the Eagles under a mountain of fastbreak points. With 7:27 to go, the Cougars have jumped to a 59-32 lead, and end the game 79-48. POTG honors were given out to Little with a big game on the boards. (6pts, 13 reb, 1blk, 2stl). Green only scored 9pts but that was mainly because the bench cameout and produced hella points. Freshman guard, D. Banks hit em up for 18pts while Soph. center, Quinton Downey contributed 8pts, 5reb, and an assist. ITS OFFICIAL>>>>>COACH D...SHOULD'VE STAYED IN THE C-H-I!!!!!!!!!!!!

p.s.-for those wondering why i took time off...I know I shouldn't have beaten BC that badly...so I went back to the drawing board to come up with better sliders....check the ELPREZ98 slider posting for more details....

(3-0) Cougars vs. (3-1) Cal.-Coastside

Last time, on Upstart Cougars..... "oh yea, remind me who Boston College is again?" Senior Justin Little boasts after a big win versus a Big East school.
Next the Cougars head out to Cal. Coastside(one of the few none existent schools in the game) to go toe-to-toe with the Pirates. Remembering that the I.M.M., Sam Power is out for at least another week with that nagging hip injury. In his place, Junior PG, Halsted Carmichael a.k.a "The Chickenhawk" takes his place. Standing at only 5'10 inches(was just 5'5 last year and was THIS CLOSE TO BEING CUT until he grew 5 inches) he is arguably the best defender on the team. Also to pick up the scoring slack, Coach Dillard, moved Big Up Al Massey(a great defender) to the bench and moved The Fresh Prince, freshman Drew Banks to the starting rotation. Once the game started, Power's floor presence and leadership was definitely missing on the floor. Also with a full 12:17 left in the first half, Antwan "The Talented Mr." Richard picked up his 2nd foul and sat the bench for the remainder of the 1st half. Later in the game, with elbows flying after a good defensive board, the inexperience Jr. Quinton Downey catches a 2-piece to the face, and unfortunately catches him right above the eye. Looks like a little blurry vision, but as a precautionary measure the trainer sits him out for the rest of the game...and 2 more days. By halftime, Cal.-Coastside jumps to an early lead, 31-28.

We fast forward through a great back and forth battle between the two teams, with 1:55 left in the game, and the Cougars are DOWN by 6, 65-59!!!! That's when "MrPro4Sho" decides to take the game into his own hands, with 6pts, 1blk and 1stl in the last minute and a half, Green single-handedly brings it to 65-65 with 27 sec remaining. Coastside scores with 7.2 sec left on the clock. With the remaining time, the Fresh Prince, Drew Banks takes the ball all the way downcourt pulls up for an open 10footer and drops the shot to send the game into overtime!!!!!!!!

After a tight overtime battle, and 14 seconds left, looks like the Cougars have the juice to win it ,up 84-79. Now strategically, Coach D decides to put the Fresh Prince back in for freethrow protection. WHAT A MOVE, COACH D!!!!!(a lot of sarcasm in that statement) On the inbound the rookie decides to play extra close D, fouls the Coastside PG ON THE THREE....sinks the shot plus one!!!!!!!! Game is now 83-84. Coach D's beads of sweat...just trickle..trickle....trickle off his bigazz forehead. Now, with 10 seconds left, Coastside sends The GREEN GIANT, Senior Justin Little to the line.....and he's "as cool as the other side of the pillow!!!" Knocks down both freethrows.....Coast side throws it down court for the GAME TYING 3....AND>>>>>>>>>NO GOOD!!!!!!!Cougars are out of the Coastside gym like NICK CAGE.....GONE IN 60 SECONDS flat!!!!!!!!!!!!

POTG: Wesley Green, 22pts(14pts in 2nd half/OT) 10reb, 3ast, 1blk

Honorable Mentions:
D. Banks, 12pts 3ast, 2stl
A. Richard, 11pts 5 reb, 1ast/blk(while sitting out the majority of the first half)
J. Little: 14pts, 9reb(5) 3ast
Morgan: 6pts 4reb(3)

The deciding factor in the game was offensive boards 24 to 6 (Cougars)
That was the only thing that kept the Upstart Cougars UNDEFEATED!!!1

(4-0) Cougars vs. (1-0) S.F. Austin

The Real Deal at 21????

Are the Cougars 4real this year???? They are just tearing new...uh....orifices for opponents this year and Stephen F. was no different. By halftime, the score was just 40-27, but by the time this one ended it was a very lopsided game. This time (and this year for that matter) the wins are coming from by way of great bench play. The entire NCAA knows, Pro4Sho, will get his 18 points every night(tonight 18pts, 8reb, 3 ast, stl/blk w/POTG honors). Everyone knows that the Green Giant will get his 12pts, 11reb( well tonight 15pts/8reb but whose counting??). But look at this bench contribution:

R. Morgan: 11pts 6reb 2stl blk
Violette: 4pts 5reb 2ast

And the reserve play in the absence of Senior, Sam Power:

The Chickenhawk, H. Carmichael: 6pts 5ast
The Fresh Prince, D. Banks: 5pts 4ast

That more than covers the normal contribution for Power(averaging, 11pts 6ast). In the end, the Cougars win 77-47 and move to 5-0 for the season. Interconference rivals Valparaiso are closely on their heels sitting at 4-1. Also for the first time in Coach Dillard's 4yr tenure, the COUGARS ARE RANKED!!!!!! YEP, they hit both the ESPN and Press Poll at a solid #21. Great job, Cougars!!!!!!

Side Note: High school players must really be watching SPORTSCENTER too. As soon as the Cougars entered as a ranked squad, Coach D's email started blowing up. 6'6 227 5-star PG, Jake Dean immediately requested a chance to visit Chicago State, along with 5-star SF, Will Wade out of Louisville, Ky. Of course, Coach D did arrange for their visits, but he definitely had to hold back his feeling of satifaction until after the games against, Utah State, Louisana-Monroe, Oakland Union, Tenn. Tech, and then.......#2 ranked ARIZONA WILDCATS!!!!!!!!!

AN ACHILLES HEEL?
(1-2) UTAH STATE VS. (5-0) CHICAGO STATE

Last year when the Cougars shooting started going cold, that's when the losses started coming. This is hopefully not a similar season. The stingy Utah State D held the Cougars to just 40% shooting and 27 pts in the first half. The Cougars didn't help themselves by missing WIDE OPEN jump shots though. Utah State played a smart game of denying the interior pass, and forcing the Cougars to look outside for scoring. Pro4Sho, W. Green went just 3/19, for just 8 points totaling his lowest point output for the season. With 12:50 to go in the first half, Utah State actually takes the lead and makes it very tough for the Cougars, as a their first home game starts to also look like their first loss. With 52 seconds left in the game, The Aggies have a 2pt lead and their forward gets the ball inside, has a lightly contested midrange shot, and MISSES. Justin Little gets the rebound and a quick outlet pass to the streaking Wesley Green for 2pts ties the game at 59. After a great shot by the Aggie PF, there is just 7 seconds left. The Cougars inbound the ball and FINALLY get it past half-court with just 1.2 seconds left. Now, becuase of his ability to pass, but poor shooting night, Green inbounds the ball to the Fresh Prince, D. Banks. Banks recieves the pass at the three point line....turns and fades with the shot.....>>>IT's GOOOOOOODDDDDD!!!!!!TALK ABOUT CLUTCH, BUT HIS FOOT WAS ON THE LINE....SO ITS ONLY A 2 POINTER AND WE HEAD TO OVERTIME!!!!!!!!!!!!!

In the marathon, the Aggies showed a lot of poise, but in the sprint they were definitely overmatched. With great production from Banks and Little, the Cougars turn up the heat on the Aggies in OT, and cruise to an 81-71 victory(THANK GOODNESS!!!!) Now, the Cougars know they will definitely have to work on their J's becuase next time, they may not be so lucky!!!!!!!!

Stats:
POTG-Little: 14pts, 15reb, 2blk, 2stl
Banks: 23pts, 3ast, 2blk 1/3 3pts
Green: 8pts, 6reb, 4ast, 2blk 3/19 shooting, including 0/8 3pt
Richard: 13pts, 12reb(6) 2stl
Barrett: 9pt 2ast 4/11 shooting
Carmichael: 6pts, 8 ast

Iron Unkind: ALBERT MASSEY:0/6 3pts for 0...I said 0 pts....man he sucked tonight!!!!!!!
Up NEXT TENNESSEE TECH!!!! And the return of Senior PG, and International Man of Mystery(I.M.M)....SAM POWER!!!!!!

(6-0) Chicago State vs. (0-4) Louisana-Monroe

No Mo' Pro4Sho' ??????

The Cougar have had a couple of close games so they are vulnerable, but they didn't look like it tonight. The team's leading scorer, Mr. Pro4Sho, (junior forward, Wesley Green) got his wig split(broken nose) by a Louisana style, sharpazz elbow in the early minutes of the 1st half and is out for about one week, but the Cougars looked like they didn't even miss him. By halftime the lead was 19 and the Cougars decided to pour on the EXTRA can of whoopazz in the 2nd half. By the end of the game, the score was 73-37 and these guys looked REALLY good. Senior Justin little had another double-double(10pts/13reb/ast/blk) and grabbed the POTG honor as well. The bench played well with 46 of the 73 coming from the bench mob. In IMM's return(senior guard, Sam Power) he was his usual self scoring 7pts/4reb and dishing out 9 assists. As a note, Coach Dillard has decided to continue to post the "iron unkind" for the sub-par performances of the night and leave them up until the next game as a "motivational" tool for the players. Last time "Big UP" Al Massey was the winner of the award, and it turned his game around with 6-6 shootig from the floor, for 15pts, 5reb, ast and a block(NOW HOW'S THAT FOR MOTAVATION, HUH??) Tonight our "iron unkind" goes to Antwan "The Talented Mr." Richard, who scored 6pts w/8reb but off of a dismal 3-11 shooting night...better luck next game 'TWAN!!!

SIDE NOTE:
The Cougars are definitely making strides in the recruiting department as well!!!! Request to visit from:
5-Star #5 in the country, SF out of Bossier, LA Dave Davenport
5-Star #27 in the country, PG out of Lake Worth, Fl D.C. Saunders

and.......the COUGARS are ranked #16 in both the ESPN and Press Poll. With scheduled games versus #5 (4-0) Xavier, #6 (4-1) Arizona, and #7 (4-1) Oklahoma St. The Cougars could have a miraculous... or disasterous season ahead. Stay tuned sports fans....the year hasn't even begun to get good!!!!!!

2-3(0-0) Oakland Union College Cardinals vs. 7-0(0-0) Chistate Cougars

Hmm.....you know its very odd that the last post asked about the Chicago State Cougar rebounding(Cougar Offreb: 6, Cardinals: 13) ability. Becuase that is one of the biggest reasons that they were UPSET TODAY!!!!!!!! First of all, for those who either know or play with/against the OUC Cardinals, know that their colors are yellow/black/white. Normally they have these bright yellow decoy-looking unies.....BUT OH NO.....they had to pull out the NEW all black uniforms. That should've been the first sign for the Cougars that the Cardinals meant business. The 2nd sign should've been the 31-27 lead that OUC had at halftime. As all of you know the Cougars RARELY go into halftime losing. Now, the Cougars couldn't fault 3 of the four players that make up LXC(LEAGUE OF EXTRAORDINARY COUGAR MEN)...of couse Pro4Sho is sitting out with a broken nose. The GREEN GIANT, Justin Little put out Shaq Diesel numbers with 24pts 15reb(6) assist, and a block with 11/13 shooting( he still got POTG honor in a losing effort). Antwan THE TALENTED MR. Richard, helped with 18pts/4reb/1ast/3stl/blk with 9/16 shooting from the field. Now here's the problem....absolutely no bench support(Cougar bench was outscored 19/7) and negligible scoring from IMM, Sam Power...who did have 8 assists but only 3 pts off 1/6 shooting....including the game winner from 3(WITH NO ONE GUARDING HIM!!!). So of course...Mr. Power and the entire COUGAR BENCH....gets the iron unkind award dammit!!!!!!

Hopefully, this loss will not hurt the Cougars' standing in the polls TOO MUCH. They are now 7-1...and we'll see how they play after this big loss at the crib.

Side Note: PRO4SHO, W. Green will not play against Tenn. Tech or #5 Arizona...so that could be a big factor in games vs. good opponents!!!!!

P.S.-Rebounding is actually pretty tight on this game...becuase you actually can block out(GRRR...i get mad at ESPN NBA everytime i think about this)....I think that is the key to rebounding in this game is gettting position with a decent(doesn't have to be great like Little) rebounder and block everyone else out. The reason I rebound so well is becuase Justin Little is 7'0 and 92/95(offreb/defreb) so that helps out a lot!!!! You gotta recruit well man!!!!!

lol GL w/ any 3 star's bro...i was UNC Greensboro in my first yr and won my division and made NCAA and played UConn first round and only lost my by like 8 and had lost by only 6 to Maryland earlier in the yr and though i would get hella recruits...i got 2 3star guys which are a huge help though since u start w/ such a crappy team...like all my guys already on the team had rankings of like 70-77 and then i get 2 new frosh's who are already like 76...will help u big time for next yr recruiting if u do well again...plus they only get better

P.S. U can go after higher ranked guys...like i had one guy who was 4star and was pretty good and was in the high range for me and came to visit one of my games which i won, which boosted his interest but i still lost him to some powerhouse like Wake Forest but it was close...but i'd only go after guys that are in ur med to high range...if by like the 4week in recruiting u want to go after someone who is only medium it's to late...also if u waste all ur points on someone in med u prob wun get them and ur'll loes other prospect so make sure u have medioce ppl in high range so that if ur top prospect falls through u got some decent guys to fall back on...basically RECRUIT DURING THE YR...makes a big help cause u get guys high alot quicker so u dont have to spend points on them to get em up later.

i've got the green box man!!!!

Ok we've got 2 games to report today for the Cougars.

Tennessee Tech vs. #16 Chicago State

The Cougars did a great job bouncing back from last game's upset to OUC. The Green Giant came out grabbing everything in sight and almost single-handedly won the game 64-54..
Little earned POTG honor with 16pts/21reb/2blk/assist. The rest of the team did well too. Richard contributed 13pts and 9 rebounds while Power rounded it out with 8pts and 2 assists. One thing to notice was the Cougars' dominance on the boards 37/20....Justin Little had more rebounds than the entire Tenn. Tech squad!!!!!!!!!

Note: The Chickenhawk, Halsted Carmicheal, has been playing very well of late. Coach Dillard has decided to subsitute him into the starting PG role whenever it doesn't constitute a height disadvantage for the Cougars.

now the moment we've all been waiting for......

#16 (8-1) Chicago State Cougars vs. #6 (4-1) Arizona Wildcats

First of all this is a very big game early in the season for both teams. The Cougars are playing to show they TRUELY BELONG in the top 25, while the Wildcats are ready and willing to stop the rise of this budding powerhouse. Another great feature to this match was the attendance of the #1 recruit in the country, PF Brent Snipes to see the Wildcats play(and hopefully recognize the Cougars in action as well). The anticipation for this game was pretty high for both teams but definitely really high for the Cougars becuase this is the first time that they have played a ranked opponent and felt not only like they could...but also SHOULD win the game.
The first half was a see-saw battle between two very well prepared teams. A couple of big things did happen though. Arizona's star PG, and SF went to the bench early becuase of foul trouble which definitely aided the Cougars' cause. With 7:41 left in the 1st half, the Wildcats played very aggressively which lead to bonus freethrows for the rest of the period. At halftime, Junior Terrance Barrett took the last second shot and was fouled in the process which sent him to the line for 3. He hit 2/3 and the Cougars went into halftime with a 33-30 lead. All of the team stats at the half were pretty much identical, excluding freethrow shooting where the Cougars had a 6 shot advantage.
Coming out of the 2nd half, all the starters were back in for Arizona and it showed. 11:05 remaining, Arizona goes on a 6-0 run and is up 44-39.
But great play by The Fresh Prince, D. Banks (9 of 13pts in the 2nd half) with 7:30 remaining cuts the lead to 2, 52-50. Then off the bench, J. Violette gets the offensive board and puts it back with the monster jam which capped a 9-0 run by the Cougars and solidified a lead, 56-52. From there, Arizona tried to ramp up the defense but unfortunately, the refs were calling the game tightly and it seemed as if the Wildcats couldn't breathe on a Cougar with a foul being called. By the end of the game, the Cougars had won big 84-66 with great team play. POTG honors went to Justin Little with 13pts 9reb and 4blks. The Chickenhawk did a great job off the bench with 12pts 3reb 4ast stl/blk. The rest of the major contributors looked like this

Power: 8pts 3reb 6ast stl/blk
Massey: 8pts 1reb 2 ast 2stl
Richard: 14pts 7reb 1stl
Banks: 13pts 2reb 2ast 3stl blk

Of course, with the loss to OUC the Cougars didn't expect to gain any ground in the polls, but the polls were still a little rough. In the ESPN Poll the Cougars dropped to #21 and #20 in the Press Poll, but at least they are still ranked.

Side Note: Pro4Sho, junior forward, Wesley Green will return next game.

(9-1) Chicago State vs. (3-4) Centenary Gents

This one was over before it started. The Gents came out colder than a snowball in space. By halftime the Cougars had jumped to a 40-17 lead. Even with horrible shooting from threepointland (2/14-14%) the Cougars still ran away with this one 66-39. POTG honors went to none other than Justin Little with 12pts and 12 rebounds. In his 1st game back....PRO4SHO, Wesley Green, had a respectable 8pts/6reb/2stl/blk. This was a great showing from the Cougars who now move to 10-1, and #19/#18 in the ESPN/PRESS polls, respectively.

SIDE NOTE: THE COUGARS HAVE HAD THEIR 1ST 5 STAR COMMITTMENTS!!!! IN FACT, THREE PLAYERS HAVE COMMITTED TO CHICAGO STATE!!!!

#5 Dave Davenport(6'6, 216 SF) Bossier, LA
#29 Jake Dean(6'6 226 PG) La Mesa, CA
#33 Will Wade (6'6 206 SF) Louiville, KY

Things are looking definitely looking good for the COUGARS!!!!

#20 ChiState Cougars vs. #5 Xavier Musketeers

Talk about a game between powerhouses!!!! This was a game for the ages and the Cougars will not forget this game for a while. First of all, both teams have only one loss on their records. Second, both teams were stacked with retuning juniors and seniors that know how to win and are showing that this year.
After tip-off the Musketeers jumped all over the Cougars scoring 9 unanswered points to start the game. With 13:30 to go Xavier had reeled off 3 more points and hit the score 12-2. By this time, Coach Dillard knew he had to settle down his team and called a timeout. After the timeout, the Cougars looked a lot more confident and poised. Behind 6 straight points by PRO4SHO, W. Green, the Cougars pulled themselves back into the game and by halftime, the Cougars only trailed by 4....36-40. Green had shown his ability yet again ending the half with 10pts, 2assists, 2 reb, and a steal. Aggressive defense is what kept the Musketeers ahead becuase at the half, they had already forced the Cougars into 10 TO, including 6 team steals.
The second half was a battle to watch!!!! The score see-sawwed back and forth with neither team able to grab a legitimate lead. However with 10:46 left, The Fresh Prince, D. Banks scored his 14th point off a fast break and tied the game at 46. For the remainder of the game the score was a game of steals/mistakes and TO. By the end of the game 41 total turnovers had been committed and both teams seemed to really go for the win. With 1:47 left, The Green Giant, Justin Little went to the line off of a shooting foul and hit both freethrows to cut the Musketeer lead to 1, 68-67. Then with 28 seconds left, Antwan The Talented Mr. Richard hits a fadeaway 9 footer from the post which put the Cougars in front, 71-70.
However, with just 13 seconds left in the game, the star SG for Xavier drove into the lane.....BUT GOT THE BALL stolen by the CHICKENHAWK, Halsted Carmichael, which ended the Musketeer hopes to hit the game-winning shot. Carmichael then went to the line and hit 2 big freethrows which sealed the win 73-70.
POTG honors were given to PRO4Sho, Wesley Green: 14pts, 5reb, 3ast, 2stl, 3blks but a dismal 7 TO!!! Other major contributors:

Richard: 12pts 2reb 2blk stl
Little: 14pts 10reb 2stl 2blk
Banks 17pts 1reb 3ast 1stl 1blk 5TO
Power 0pts 6ast 1st 5TO
Carmichael 4pts 3ast 1st 1 blk
Massey: 3pts 1ast 3stl 1blk

Another big win for the now 11-1 Cougars, but they cannot rest. Up next they play UMKC, who is 7-2 and looking to make a name for themselves in the Mid. Cont. Conference. Stay tuned sports fans....there is more to come!!!

2 more games to report:

7-3 UMKC Kangaroos vs. 11-1 Cougars

I'm just going to post stats and let you decide:

76-45, Cougars win
POTG: Antwan Richard w/12pts 9reb stl/blk

Other contributions:
Power: 8pts 2ast reb 2/6 3ptland
Massey 10pts 2reb 2stl ast
Little 8pts 11(3)reb ast/stl/blk
Banks: 9pts reb ast
Green: 6pts 4reb 2ast stl/blk
Carmichael: 12pts reb 3ast 3stl blk

Who ordered the extra can of whoopaz?

GAME 2: 6-3 OUC Cardinals vs. 12-1 ChiState Cougars

Now this game was a different story. Having already lost to the Cardinal earlier this year, the Cougars were ready for anything. The game opened and neither team could find the rim. There was horrible shooting on both sides, and by the end of the 1st half, there was 41 points scored in the game...TOTAL. The Cougars led by a 5 point margin, just 23-18. The 2nd half was more of the same. The Cougars continued to lead the whole game, but they just couldn't put the Cardinals away until the last couple of minutes of the game, once the Cardinals started taking desperation 3's and fouling. The game ended 51-39, with neither team shooting over 35% from the field. POTG honors were givein to PRO4Sho, who ended upt wiht 14pts 11reb and 6 assists in a great all around game. The Green Giant also added 6pts and 15 boards, continuing his dominance on the glass, and leading the nation in rebounding. The Cougars are now ranked #18 in both polls and are on a 6 game winning streak. They look nearly unbeatable but who knows what may be in store for the Cougars for the 2nd half of the regular season??????[/b]

2 More Games:

12-1 Chistate Cougars vs. 6-6 Southern Utah

This was an interesting game that the Cougars couldn't just run away with. By halftime the Cougars only had a 4pts lead and was shooting just below 45%. Luckily great backcourt play from both The International Man of Mystery(Sam Power:16pts 4ast 2reb blk 2/4 3ptland), and the Fresh Prince, (Drew Banks, 8pts 3ast blk) pulled out the solid win, 64-51. POTG honors went to Antwan The Talented Mr. Richard, with 18pts 8reb 2ast.

13-1 ChiState Cougars vs. 7-6 Oral Roberts
Another breeze!!!! The Cougars maintained a 10-13 pt lead the entire game and never looked back. The Cougars had a huge rebounding advantage, 39-23 and that was maintained by the POTG, senior Justin Little who grabbed 15rebs with 4pts 3blks and 3stl for a great defensive game. Notable Mentions:

power: 1/3 3pts, 13pts 6ast 3reb 2blk stl
banks: 10pts 3ast 2reb stl
green: 11pts 3reb 2ast
(bench) violette: 7pts 5reb 2ast

The Cougars are now RANKED #13 IN THE COUNTRY(in both polls), and match up against #4 Oklahoma State......more details to come!!!!!!

(15-1) #13 Chistate Cougars vs. (10-2) #4 Oklahoma State Cowboys
"We got hosed Johnny....we got hosed!!!"

Finally, the Cougars got the chance to play a big team in their own house and everyone in the country wants to know.....ARE THE UPSTART COUGARS FINALLY FOR REAL??!!! The haters, the fans, the media, and even the players on the court got everything they asked for AND MORE tonight.

From the tipoff, anticipation was high on both sides as the Cougars earned the 1st posession of the game. They didn't convert on the 1st possesion but lets talk about 'dem Cowboys. The O-State star PG, Greg Blanchard was ready to play and with 11:09 left in the first half, he had already scored his 7th point putting Oklahoma State up 9-3 and Coach Dillard knew a TO would be necessary or the game would be over even before it began.
After settling down the team, senior forward, Antwan Richard came on the floor with the mindset to shutdown the great Cowboy PG. With 10:45 to go, Richard goads Blanchard into the lane, and forces Blanchard into a charge, his 2nd personal and on the bench he goes. With this threat on the bench for the remainder of the half, the Cougars could move into a man-to-man and worry a lot less about a PG w/ both slashing and shooting ability.
By the time there was 4:12 left in the half, Halsted Carmichael began a defensive run that should've earned him POTG. He made 3 consecutive great plays( steal, block, and quick 12 jumper off an inbound pass) that put the Cougars up 29-23. By halftime the Cougars led 33-27 off a last second fadeaway by Justin Little(10pts 11reb blk).
In the 2nd half, the Cougars immediately felt the difference of Blanchard back in the game. With the inbound pass, the Cowboy PG hit a 3pt bringing the Cowboys to within 3, 33-30.
The game stayed relatively tight until, PRO4Sho, Wesley Green, got a tipped pass from Little and made the 5ft shorty and the freethrow after the foul, putting the Cougars up 52-44.
But this is where it get CRUCIAL!!! With 1:46 left, freshman guard, Drew Banks picks up his 4th personal, sending the O-State shooting guard to the line. He hits both freethrows and the Cougars lead is 4, 62-58. Then with 30 seconds left Little rebounds the ball after an O-state miss, and gets the outlet pass to a streaking Carmichael for a 6 point lead, 66-60. Now with only :23 remaining, Greg Blanchard begins to take over. He hits a big 3 pointer off the inbound pass, cutting the lead to 66-63. Then with only 15 seconds left, Wesley Green sets a great pick for Carmichael who gets the easy layup and with 9.1sec remaining.
For some reason, it seems like the Cougars didn't understand that this kid, Blachard had range and he hits a LONG 3pt from just inside the halfcourt line...and the score is 68-66 WITH 6.3 LEFT. Blanchard is forced to foul Carmichael, a 91% FT shooter. Carmichael gets to the line for the 1 and 1.....AND CHOKES!!!!!!!!!!!ARGGG!!!!!
With little time remaining the backup PG pushes the ball upcourt for a last second buzzerbeater......and NO GOOD!!!!! The Cougars have beaten the #4 Cowboys by 2, 68-66.

POTG:Greg Blanchard in the losing effort 20pts 5ast 3st 4/6 3pts(while sitting out the majority of the 1st half)
Cougar contributions:
(bench)Carmichael: 10pts 4reb 3ast blk
(bench)Massey: 6pts blk
Litttle: 10pts 11reb blk
Richard 7pts 2reb ast
Green: 15pts 3reb 2ast stl
Power: 2pts 10ast

The Cougars had great scoring help from the bench and the defensive play was excellent. The Cougars are now 16-1, but got shafted by the pollsters after this big win. They didn't move up in either poll at all!!!!!!!!!!! They have maintained their #13 rank but got no love for the big win. There has to be a tall glass of hatorade in the ESPN kitchen!!!! However, you live and remain true to the one goal, advancement in the NCAA tournement!!!! Stay tuned!!!

16-1 Cougars vs. 8-7 W. Illinois Leathernecks

A Tale of Two Halves!!!!

The first half of this game could've been the Cougars worst half this year. They came out sluggish, shooting a dismal 28% of the field and 1/4 from 3ptland. The sad thing is THEY WERE WINNING and at halftime the score was just 25-14!!!!! The Leathernecks were shooting an even more embarrassing, 27% from the field including 0/7 from 3ptland. Luckily for the Cougars, they were getting to the FT line, and knocking them down(8-8 in the first half). Most of the way through the 2nd half becuase of the complete lack of passion shown by the starters, the bench players played and showed they had the FIRE!!!!!. Get this, in the 1st half the team shot a combined, 4/21=28% in the 2nd half the Cougars caught fire, and ended the game 21/31, a scorching 67% in the 2nd half. POTG honor went to ]Big UP [/color]Albert Massey who came off the bench and scored 10pts 5ast and 4 reb.

The Cougars are now 17-1, and still get no love in the polls. The remained idle at #13 in both polls and doesn't look like they are going to be given the opportunity to reach Top 10 ranking. However, they do look poised to be a definite mover/shaker in the tourney and it is yet to be seen how they will fare against their conference rival, Valpo. Stay tuned!!!

Hmm...IUPUI that's a lonnnnnng name!!!!!

17-1 ChiState Cougars vs. 6-9 IUPUI Jags

The Cougars came out nice and ready. They jumped to an early 21-8 lead, capped by a 3 pointer by I.M.M.(SAM POWER) Now IUPUI sounds like a sorry team but over the course of 3 seasons, they have definitely made improvements. This is easily seen becuase with 4:29 left in the 1st half, the Jags had pulled within 4 following a silly foul by PRO4SHO, Wesley Green. After sitting Green down, however, Coach Dillard's Cougars picked up the level of play and with 2:44 left, the Upstart Cougars had moved the lead back up to 13, 33-20. At halftime the score was 40-26, and the Cougars ended the half at a scorching, 64% from the field(only 26 points in the paint too!!!)
The Jags may have been down, but they definitely weren't out. Battling back and forth, the Jags got the upperhand, and pulled to within 4, 46-41 and only 7:49 remaining. However unsung hero, Antwan "the Talented Mr." Richard went on a one-man scoring drive with 8 straight points that put the Jags away, 66-54.

POTG: Richard, 16pts 4reb 2ast 2stl blk had a monster all-around game!!!
Other notable contributions included:
Power: 15pts 3ast 3stl
Little: 8pts 9reb 2ast 2stl
Barrett: 7pts

Now Coach Dillard is recognizing a trend of sub-par play from Wesley Green. Now even though he is the team's 2nd leading scorer(was first but now overtaken by Little) Coach Dillard is seriously thinking about moving him to the bench to set a very blue flame under Green's backside. Coach Dillard knows that without great play from Pro4Sho the Cougars will not win the Mid. Cont. Conference title, let alone do well in NCAA tourney play.

foreshadowing........

18-1(7-0) Chicago State Cougars vs. 12-4 (8-1) Oak Union College Cardinals

NOT AGAIN!!!!!

So far in the season, the Cougars are one of the hottest teams in all of NCAA basketball. They have won 11 straight, and the last time they lost they played....u guessed it OUC!!!!![/i] The Cardinals haven't been cold either though. Since the big win against the Cougars earlier this year, they've gone an equally amazing 10-1....and their only other loss during that stretch was to..... [i] u guessed it again THE COUGARS!!!!(for some reason the computer didn't count the first meeting as an interconference matchup so we play each other 3 times during the regular season this year) So this game is a game for a bunch of the marbles(not all of them), including bragging rights and that ever-popular #1 seed in the Mid. Cont. Tourney next month.
This game started off a bit sluggish but picked up as the 1st half continued. With 12:18 left in the half, Wesley Green picked up his 2nd personal foul and Coach Dillard had to sit him down. Then to make matters even worse, with 9:09 to play in the half, The Green Giant, senior Justin Little also picked up his 2nd personal and the team's 6th team foul. The next Cougar player to sit down with foul trouble was sophmore guard, Al Massey, and by this time OUC had gained a slight advantage 20-16. Now even with all of the foul trouble, the Cougars maintained their poise.....UNTIL the star Cardinal guard, Nate Howard hit his 8 point of the half, with his 2nd 3 pointer of the game. With the score 23-17, Coach Dillard immediately called a timeout before things got out of hand. The timeout worked, becuase with just :53 left in the half, Massey came off the bench made a great crossover and stepped back AI style with the sweet 3pter that put the Cougars up 33-31. The teams entered the lockerrooms at halftime with the game tied at 35. Quinton Downey(Cougar's sophmore center) did a wonderful job filling in for Little in the 1st half by contributing 6pts and 5reb.
Now here's where it get interesting!!!! The Cardinals' coach must've fired up his players in the lockerroom becuase they came out SMOKING. They were hitting virtually everything, and with 11:03 remaining they jumped to a 43-37 lead. Also later in the 2nd half, I.M.M.( senior Sam Power) did his Justin Little impression in the post, scoring on the smaller guard with the foul and pulling his team closer 49-53. The lead grew to 61-55, when OUC hit 2 bonus freethrows with 4:43 remaining.
Now the Cougars were down again and looked to their go-to-guys, who definitely responded. With 4:01 left, Little gets superb post position on the OUC center and MONSTER JAMS it down with the foul, pulling the Cougars to within 3, 60-63. On the very next posession, Sam Power does and excellent job of penetrating the defense(which collapsed on him) and kicking it out to wide open PRO4Sho for the open three, 63-63.(i was very hype right about here!) The score went back and forth until :21 seconds was left in the game, and Power turned the ball over with an unwise pass. This turnover led to an OUC break and the score was 74-71. Then with 2.7 seconds left, 76-73(OUC) the Cougars had a chance to tie with the three. Richard inbounded the ball to Sam Power who was tighly guarded, and he passes to Wesley Green for the game-tying 3....NO GOOD!!! The Cougars fall again to a very good Cardinal squad.

POTG: Sam Power: 13pts 8ast 2stl 2blk

Downsides:
1. Green had another subpar game, 7pts 2reb 4ast 1stl 3/9 fg and that is not how Coach D wants to end the season.
2. This is probably going to be the Mid. Cont. Conference Title game, and the Cougars have lost 2/3 this season to OUC.
3. This loss ends a scorching 11 game win streak.

Upsides:
1. Little had 13pts and 9 boards while sitting the majority of the 1st half.
2. Another 5-star landing with #45 high school player in the country, 7'2 263lb Collier Stokes(Kansas City, Kansas) has committed to Chicago State
3. Maintained top 25 status, #16 ESPN Polls and #15 Press Polls

Stay tuned becuase year 2 is almost over......and the NCAA tournament is just around the corner!!!!!!

10-8(6-5) Valpariaso vs. 19-2(10-1) ChiState

Will the Cougars Lose Back to Back ????

Exciting is an understatement for this game. The Cougars knew that Valpo would be a challenge so they came in ready to play. The game began with each team trying to get a feel for the game. Then with 3:28 left in the half, Valpo must've gotten a better feel, because they were up by 10, 22-12. By halftime the Cougars cut it back to just a 4pt lead for Valpo 24-20.
The 2nd half was a blur!!!! With 12:14 left Crusaders went up by 7 following a big 3pt shot by freshman, Chaz McNamara(a former ChiState recruit!!!!) The Cougars had cut the lead down to just 2, 51-49 with 1:41 left, after a great steal and alleyoop from Power to Banks. Then with just :25 sec, The Green Giant scores in the post bringing the Cougars back even at 51. Valpo ran the remaining time off the clock for the last second shot.....and missed and we are headed to OT!!!!!!!!!!
The 1st OT, was a offensive display for Little who scored 14 of his 27 in OT periods. Late in OT, with just 7.3 seconds left and Valpo up by 2, 65-63. Justin Little SPRINTS...downcourt, and Green hits him right in stride. Valpo does have a defender back, and with no time remaining, Little hits the game-tying 17footer WITH A MAN IN HIS FACE....forcing a 2nd OT!!!!!!
Unfortunately for Valpo this is where they ran out of gas, even with both Green and Power fouling out this OT period, the Crusaders maintained a 5pt lead for the majority of the period....winning 80-75. WHAT A GAME!!!!!

POTG: Little: 27pts 13reb 2blk 2stl

Notable contributions:
Power: 8pts 9ast
Banks: 10pts 7ast
Green: 17pt 5reb 3ast 3stl 3blk(nice game!)

VALPO freshman guard.....Chaz McNamara: 15pts/12min(all in 2nd half)

2 MORE GAMES PLUS TRAGEDY STRIKES......

These two games were won relatively easily for the Cougars.

7-13 Souther Utah vs. 20-2 Chicago State
Score: 36-50
POTG: Little, 10reb, 10pts
Notable Contributions:
Power: 9pts 5ast
Richard: 6pts 8reb 2ast

7-11 IUPUI JAGS vs. 21-2 ChState Cougars
Big win/Big Loss

The Cougars did win this one easily 76-59, but during the game they suffered a big loss. POTG honor was given to Little with a monster game(16pts, 14reb, 3ast, 4blk). Wesley Green looked great as well(23pts 6reb 4ast 1stl). But the big loss is the freshman scorer, Drew Banks (bka, the Fresh Prince) suffered a season ending injury with a broken patella. Banks suffered this injury following a collision with an IUPUI player and the trainers do not see Banks returning until next year. Banks was an integral part of the Cougars scoring explosion this year adding 8ppg and a solid defender off the bench. The scoring slack will have to be picked up somewhere......hopefully Green(11.9ppg), Little(12.0ppg), Richard(11.1ppg) and Power(8.5ppg) can pick up the slack.

Of course...the fans must have their say!!!(lol)....I'm actually going to post ratings at the end of the season. Let ya'll know increases...decreases..and if Coach D decides to stay at ChiState!!!!

THE END IS NEAR!!!

The Cougars have played one more..and only have one more game left in the regular season. they beat up on the Centenary Gents today winning easily...54-78. Pro4Sho came out the gate...scorching from downtown and ended the game with 24pts including 3/4 from downtown and POTG honors. Since Power stayed in foul trouble for most of the game, The Chickenhawk, Halsted Carmichael did a wonderful job running the offense with 7pts and 6ast. Over all the Cougars have moved to 24-2 for the season, and guaranteed a #1 seed in the conference tournement. They also were shafted by the pollsters once more as they have fallen to #17 in both polls despite the win. Their final regular season opponent, Valpariaso looks to be tough and the Cougars really want to end this great season on a high note. Until next time.....

The Old Journey ends and new one begins....(i sound like a LOTR trailer!!)

So its finally over....all the hard work has paid off and the Cougars are finally finished with the regular season. At times it seemed as if they weren't going to finish strong, but in the end Coach D and the guys had great success this year. The've ended the year with a exciting 8 game winning streak including the home/career finale for the seniors, with a big win over Valpo, 69-54.

Season Stats
The Cougars end the regular season 26-2(15-1), with a lot of big wins this year. Victories over Oklahoma State, Arizona, and Xavier have catapulted Chicago State into one of the elite programs in college basketball. The Cougars also managed to lead the NCAA in a couple of good and bad statistical catagories as well:

70.8ppg(19th), 34.7rpg(11th), 25.0drpg(3rd), 18.3 APG(1st), 13.0TOPG(worst) 11.9 FPG(1st) 52.2%FG(1st) 79.5%FT(2nd)

It seemed as if every Cougar player came to play every night, but the standouts are as follows:

jr foward, W. Green:
11.9ppg 4.7 rpg 2.1apg 52%fg 77.5%ft

sr center, J. Little:
11.8ppg 11.5 rpg(3rd) 62.6%fg(1st) 71.1%ft

sr forward, A. Richard:
11.2ppg 6.0rpg 47.7%fg 88.7%ft

sr guard, S. Power:
8.2ppg 5.1apg 44.4%fg 23%3pt 90.9%ft

rs jr guard, H. Carmichael 3.8ppg 3.4apg

so guard A. Massey 4.7ppg 2.1apg

jr guard T. Barrett 4.7ppg 21%3pt [/b]

So now after 4 reg. seasons at Chicago State, Coach Dillard is 85-35 with 11game win streak...and 12 wks in top 25 after this year. The Cougars end the regular season at #15 in all three polls. The Cougars are expected to make an impact in the tourney this year.....but just like any other year YOU JUST DON'T KNOW...until the game is played. Welcome to the THE REAL SEASON!!!!!!!!!!!!

1st ROUND OUSTING!!!!!!!!!!!!!
26-2 #1 ChiState Cougars vs. #8 Centenary Gents

Well the Cougars didn't get kicked out this time, but the Gents did a great job for the 1st half or so. Starting off the game both teams were still kind of cold. However with 9:11 left in the 1st half, the Gents had established a slow Utah Jazz-style offense which created a 10-8 lead and high percentage shots. By halftime, the Gents were still up by 2, 28-26 and the Cougars went into the lockerroom shocked that the Gents were still in the game. Coming out from the lockerroom was a different story. "Big Up" Al Massey decided to take the game into his own hands, and that's just what he did. With 12:30 left, Massey make a wonderful cut off a screen by Little for the wide open 3pt and knocks that shot down!!! The very next play, Massey got the ball off a Little outlet pass for the FB DUNK(we call him Big up because he's only 6'3 173, and dunks almost as much as Little) And then the very next play, Power gets the steal from a tipped pass by Green for another easy layup, 37-30. Finally after a Gents missed FG, Massey gets the ball one more time for another layup, his 16th/17th points of the game, and a 39-30 lead from which the Cougars never looked back!!! by the end of the game the Cougars balloned the lead, 50-64. POTG honor was given to Little for his steady contributions of 14pts 11reb ast/blk, but Massey was Coach D's player of the game with 17pts 2reb 2ast stl blk off 8/11 shooting. There were other good contributions including:

Green: 6pts 3reb 2stl 3blk
Richard: 8pts 4reb ast/blk
Power: 2pts/2reb/12ast/stl
Barrett: 9pts 3reb
Downey 4pts 5reb

This was a great win for the Cougars but they know they have a long way to go. Next opponent: #4 seed, IUPUI Jaguars who won their 1st round game vs #5 seed Valparaiso 55-36.

January 7th, 2004, 07:35 PM
Sorry to have kept everyone waiting...but really I was trying to make sure that I my sliders situated before I entered the NCAA tournament....but now I'm back and SO ARE THE COUGARS!!!!!!!!!!!

27-2 Chicago State Cougars vs. 13-15 IUPUI Jaguars

CAT FIGHT!!!!!

The Cougars had just come off an easy 1st round victory over the Gents and were in Kansas(that's where the Conference Tourney is held in the game) ready for their next game versus the Jaguars. The Cougars didn't know what to expect from the Jaguars since they are such an unpredictable team.
Starting the game, the Cougars looked determined. There was a lot of back and forth scoring initially but with 8:13 left in the half the Cougars staked claim to the lead after a BIG 3pt play by the Green Giant, Justin Little and took a 21-10 lead. The biggest play of the game, however wasn't a score....but an injury to one of the Cougars' star forwards, Wesley Green. After Little missed the freethrow, Green was going for the offensive board, and caught a stiff elbow to the ribs. He went to the lockerroom, and the trainers said that the bruise was pretty bad, and he would have to sit out for at least a week. This definitely wasn't good, considering after winning this game, the Cougars would have to face Oak Union College Cardinals, the only teams to beat them in regular season play.
The Cougars went on to easily win this one, 77-55 while shooting a scorching, 63% from the field. POTG honors were given to Little, who scored 22pts with 11reb, and 2blk off 10/13 shooting. Sam Power added 11pts and 6ast, while Terrance Barrett exploded off the bench scoring 12pts. The injury to Pro4Sho, is a big loss, and the Cougars are hoping he can return, by the time the Tournament begins.

Conference Title GAME.....

21-5 OUC Cardinals vs. 28-2 ChiState Cougars

BATTLE OF THE TITANS!!!!!!

The game pitted two of the best teams in the land....and with the injury to PRO4Sho who knew what would happen!!!!!

The game started pretty even, and with 11:11, Justin Little monster jams the score to keep the game tied at 9. The game still continued to stay close until about 4:20 in the game when Antwan "the Talented Mr." Richard scored inside and put the Cougars up 29-23. By halftime the Cougars had cruised to a 41-30 lead and the game looked very lopsided. Little maintained his dominance of the conference, with 16pts and 10 rebounds at halftime.
Of course, this is college ball and everyone goes on a run, so with 11:49 remaining, the OUC star forward pulls up for the clutch 3pter with capped a 7-0 run by the Cardinals, and pulled them within 5, 46-41. It was around this time the Cougars went ice cold. With 7:27 left in the game a neat little stat showed up, Little 13/19 Rest of Team: 13/32, so we know whose hands the game whas in.
Fastforwarding to just 6.3 sec left and the Cougars are up by 2, 71-69. The Cardinals have the ball, and are letting the time run out..then with just 2 seconds left the PG finds the OUC SF for the easy layup...and he blows it and the game is OVER. The Cougars squeak by 69-72, carried by the broad shoulders of their big men. POG honor goes to the TOURNAMENT MVP, Justin Little, who dominated with 31pts 16reb and 15/21 from the field. Antwan Richard also upped his scoring with 19 pts and 3 rebounds. Sam Power added 9pts, 7ast and 3blks and Carmichael was solid off the bench with 2pts 6ast and 3reb.

With this win the Cougars have won the Conference and an AUTOMATIC bid to the NCAA tournament. Despite wins versus Okla. State(#1 seed West), Arizona(#3 seed West), and Xavier(#8 seed in South)Cougars have been given just a #11 seeding in the East region(WE GOT HOSED MAN!!!). Also because of the great play this year the OUC Cardinals were given an at-large bid to the big dance....#11 seed in the West.

AWARDS:
A number of awards were given out to the Cougars players and staff:

senior center, Justin Little:
Tournament MVP, 22.3ppg 12.7 rpg, 1.0bpg
1st Team All Conference
Mid Cont. Conference Player of the Year

Chicago State head coach, D. Dillard:
Mid. Cont. Conference Coach of the Year(back to back baby!!!)

NEXT UP THE BIG DANCE.....#11 CHICAGO STATE VS. #5 MICHIGAN

January 7th, 2004, 08:34 PM
~~A MAN'S GAME~~

#11 ChiState Cougars 54 #6 Mich. Wolverines 63

Well, its over for the Cougars though they did have a great season. The injury to Wesley Green proved to be too big of a problem for the Cougars when they faced the #5 Michigan Wolverines. The Cougars bench didn't go deep enough, being outscored in this one 31-14. The Cougars were also beaten on the boards 32-27. With no Pro4Sho, and a Little's game AWOL(6pts 7reb 3/11 shooting) the Cougars didn't have a very good chance from the start. The 2 shining stars for the Cougars came in the form of Power(6pts 6ast 3stl), and Richard(16 pts, 8 reb, 8/15 shooting). Many fans believe though Little has dominated in college, Richard has more talent and is more likely to be drafted.

On another note, the OUC Cardinals did make it out of the 1st round, man-handling #6 Florida 75-67 in the 1st round. They later lost #3 seeded Arizona, but OUC proved that they had what it took to win a big game. From the SWEET 16 on down..here's the results.....

West
#4 Memphis 63 vs. #1 Okla. St. 75
#7 Cincinati 67(UPSET) vs.#3 Arizona 65

Coach Dillard's Personal Diary

Many fans and alumni definitely thought this was the year for me to leave...but I know I surprised them for yet another year. There were lots of offers this year but none seemed appealing enough for me. Yale shouldn't have put me on the waiting list when I applied for undergrad, UNC-Wilmington is nothing but a horizontal movement , and though Texas-El Paso is tempting, I could never see myself coaching in a "WACk" conference, lol. Anyway, maybe I shouldn't have passed up on BC last year, but the past is the past and I can't change it. I gotta get geared up to take these kids back to the big dance, but without Pro4Sho, Talented, and the Green Giant, do we really have a chance?.....I guess we'll see.

The Cougars are definitely looking to make a little shake up in the ranks this year. With non-conference games against Rutgers, Michigan, Cincinnati, Arkansas, and Memphis (just to name a few) the Cougars have one of the toughest non-conference schedules in the business. With all of the graduating seniors the starting lineup also has a completely diffeerent look.

PG- 5'10 150 Rsenior, H. Carmichael, Overall: 88 Off: 85 Def: 92

I recruited a lot of 3star prospects this year and revamped my [***]
. coaching squad(lol).

I'm really puzzled at your tone. Are you saying that you must admit that's it is a great game, because you don't feel compelled to say that it is a great game, and that someone is forcing you at gun-point? Or, are you trying to support your argument? Because, to be honest I've not been here for awhile, (I come back once in a while to learn new things about the game and to find out what is coming out next year) yet I must admit this game was a bust ;)

How do you figure that? I think this is a well polished game. The gameplay is still a little lacking, but the off-the-court part of this game is terrific.[/quote]

Neither. I was saying that I "must" admit that this is the best game that SEGA has produced simply because I WAS an avid ESPN NBA fan. This game has a more "polished" feel than its NBA counterpart(my normal choice for b-ball video gaming). There is no argument to support becuase I'm not debating with this post, I was stating my opinion and that is it. As you probably see, this post's main objective is to be my via of communication about a HOOPS legacy. You are entitled to your opinion of this game being a bust, and that's cool. We just have a difference of opinion there. :D

PS-Everyone else, honestly I had been working a lot, trying out sliders configs, and recently had a death in my immediate family so I really haven't had time to really post the games I've been playing. Thanks to all the ChiState Cougar Fans...we appreciate to support...and we're happy to announce.......

They're Back!!!!

Picking up a few games after we last left the Cougars, entering Coach Dillard's 5th year coaching these Upstart Cougars. Since we last had an update, the Cougars have looked mediocre at best settling at just 4-4, through their rigorous non-conference schedule.

W 80-68@ Rutgers(6-1)
W 80-53@ SD State(5-2)
L 57-67@ Arkansas(7-0)
L 91-93 vs. Cin(4-0)
W 83-44 vs. Pacific(4-1)
W 85-84 vs. Illinois(6-1)
L 83-94 vs. Charlotte(7-1)

So as you can see, the Cougars aren't losing to scrubs....but they also are not mopping the floor with everyone as they were last year. The Cougars main problem this year, is simply just a lack of leadership and experience. Coach Dillard has tried 4 different starting lineups, but just cannot seem to find the leader of this year's squad. The emerging leader was senior guard, Terrance Barrett. However, a SEASON ENDING elbow ligament tear, brought his promising senior year to a crashing end midway during the loss to the Razorbacks. Coach Dillard is getting great team production with 4 players averaging over 9ppg, but the downside is that no one averages over 11ppg(leader-Drew Banks(10.6pp)). Hopefully as the season progresses, the Cougars will find the offensive leader.

Excluding the Oak Union Cardinals, there doesn't seem to be much competition in the Mid. Continental Conference, and again, hopefully during a strong conference run, the Cougars will get a chance to regain its top 25 ranking(preseason #17) and Coach Dillard can stop this runaway train before they get completely off-track.

You guys are a trip...thanks though.

What's the difference between Cougars and Wildcats.......2 POINTS!!!!!

ESPN billed this to be a battle of NEW and OLD TITANS...and these kids definitely delivered. There are a lot of great stories that can be extracted from a game of this caliber, but the main focus here is the surprisingly slow 4-4 start by the Cougars this year. Under Coach Dillard's reign the Cougars looked poised to become a perrinial powerhouse and looking to move from mid-major to a major conference within 2yrs(I know wishful thinking but it could be a great addition to the 2k5 game, though). However this year has had its share of ups and downs so there is no telling what the outcome of this game would be. A little added pressure for Coach D and his coaching staff is the visit by 2 top recruits:

#12(nation) H.S. Senior PG, Anthony Davenport 6'2 175 Joplin, Mo
#15 (nation) H.S. senior SF, Dominic Cox 6'6 218 Cape St. Clair, Md

Opening the game, Coach D tried a lineup with the team's leading scorer (So, SG) Drew Banks started at forward in place of (SR, F) Paris Mitchell. It seemed like a great choice at the tipoff with Banks scoring immediately.
The 'Cats returned fire with their highflying PG, Tony Paschel, hitting a three and an open 15 footer, leaving the score at 5-2. Following a pair of great plays by (Jr, G) Albert Massey the score continued to see-saw 12-12. There were a couple of 6-0 runs made by both squads but the Cougars got the upperhand following a sweet baseline jumper by Mitchell, and the Cougar lead increased to 5, 26-21. By halftime, the Cougars held on to a 38-35 lead with Massey scoring all 10 of his game points in the 1st half. Even though they lead, the game was very close statistically with the 'Cats actually having an edge from the floor 59% to 52%.

There was no drop in intensity by both teams with Paschel picking up his 3rd personal with the charge drawn by Carmichael. With 10:46 left in the game, Carmichael hits a big 3 after a great drive and dish by Massey, and the Cougars opened the biggest lead of the game 47-37.
After great play by the 'Cats guards, and a big foul by (FR, F) Dave Davenport(which lead to a 3pt play) the 'Cats evened the score at 51 with just 3:18 to go. Then with just 1:48 remaining, (RSoph, F) Jack Violet scores three consecutive trips down the court: in the post, 2/2 FT, and 10ft J from the wing and the Cougars take the lead 64-62 with just :46 seconds remaining!!!! Then with the score tied at 64...and just :26 seconds to go..the Cougars get the ball inside to Russ Morgan who scores with the hook shot in the lane and the Cougars take the lead 66-64. The Cats have one last chance to tie it up or win, and take the desperation 3 from half-court......NO GOOD....and the Cougars win a big one at home vs. the University of Kentucky.

Stats:
Player of the Game: Albert Massey, 10pts 5reb 5ast 1blk

Notable Player:
Carmichael: 5pts 3ast 2stl
Violette 14pts(10 2nd half) 3reb
BMC:Viegas 8pts 2ast
Morgan 6pts 11reb
BMC:Stokes 4pts 6reb 2blks

*BMC-bench mobb contribution, lol

This was a very big win, pulling the Cougars above .500 at 5-4. Also winning over Kentucky must've sent shockwaves through the highschools of America because immediately after the win, the Coach Dillard recieved two emails from top 100 players noting their interest in learning more about the Chicago State program. Also following Banks' horrible performance as a starter, Coach D has decided to put him back as the sixth man(still team's leading scorer).

Press: Thanks Coach. Coach D, last year your team lost 2 games all of last year. This year you already have 5 losses midway through the season. What do you think is the reason you've lost so many?

Coach Dillard: Honestly guys, considering we lost our four leading scorers last year, including a two-time conference player of the year, I think that a bumpy start is what was pretty much expected. Now focusing more specifically on this UTEP game, we should've won this one. We did have 14 TO's compared to their 5. They played a great game of crisp, clean ball, not counting the inability of the refs to call a fair game. Drew(soph, g-Banks) had 18, Paris gave us nine and "Hot Salsa" did great after Halsted got hurt so I think that we'll be alright entering conference play next game.

Press: Coach Dillard your team was outshot from the line, UTEP had over 20 trips to line and you guys had 3. Don't you expect this considering your teams aggressive defensive play?

Coach Dillard: No. Definitely not. That statement kind of implies that we are out there hacking the he..uh..heck out of kids and we don't do that. We just were on the wrong side on calls this evening. We shot over 50% for the game they shot 43%. "The Leaning Tower" right here next to me(Paris Mitchell), did what he could as the leader down the stretch hitting that runner to bring us within 2 with 20-some seconds left and we can appreciate that as a team. Plus, I think the team was shaken when "Hawk" (PG, Halsted Carmichael) hurt his elbow out there. We thought that he may have torn the ligament like Terrance(sr, g Barrett) but luckily its just a strain and he'll be out for about 2-3 weeks. With Jake(fr, g-Jake Dean), and "Hot Salsa" (Paul Viegas) down there we'll be fine until Chickehawk comes back.

Press: Hey Paul....isn't that nickname a bit deragatory to your Hispanic descent? "Hot Salsa?" I mean does't that make you feel bad?

Paul: When I tore my muscles in my arm last year, do you know this man came to visit me EVERYDAY in the hospital. Even my MOMs didn't come see me everyday, yo!!!!(press begins to laugh). This man can call me whatever because we're family like that. Plus, you guys must not know who "Hot Sauce is!!"

Press: You guys seem surprisingly upbeat after a loss, why the high spirits?"

Coach Dillard: Uh....Brad(Myers), or better yet Paris...you want this one?

A.C. Myers: It's all yours Paris.

Paris Mitchell: We do care about winning and losing, but Coach D has told us to remember to have fun. I think with "Hawk" going down, we kinda got sidetracked and was wondering more if he was going to be ok, more than winning but I can assure you, we will be ready amped and ready to play against the Centenary next week.

A.C. Myers: Good job, Paris. Uh, that's it for today...we have a plane to catch, we'll see you vultures in Chicago.

1st Conference Game

0-0 (5-5) Chicago St. vs. 0-0 (2-5) Centenary

December 27th
Its just two days past Christmas, and the Cougars headed down to Shreveport, La to face the Centenary Gents. The last time these two teams met was in last year's conference tournament where the Cougars handed the Gents a all-expense paid ticket to to watch the NCAA tournaments......from the campus TV room. This year may be different seeing as the Cougars have almost completely revamped their lineup(only starter from last year is Al "Big UP" Massey. The Gents did have one player in particular to watch and that was 6'11 senior center, J.J. Little. As a pure scorer, Little boasts a 15.1ppg scoring average a dismal 2.1rpg average as a starting center.
Surprisingly the Gents leading rebounder is a 6'3 190 soph. guard, who averages just over 8rpg.
The game opens with the Gents ready to play and the Cougars reeling in awe of the Gents superb play. Centenary actually had a chance to blast the Cougars for 10 answered points to start the game before ChiState gete on the scoreboard following a 3pt play by Russ Morgan. The pressure of starting seemed to bother the young point guard, Viegas who turned the ball over 3 straight possesions which helped the Gents maintain a stranglehold on the scoreboard, 24-10 with 4:30 in the first half. Coach D called a timeout to give the younger guys on the team a confidence speech, but to his surprise they were already starting to get pumped themselves. As he entered the huddle, "we will NOT lose to these busters, Coach" exclaimed Collier Stokes, the 7'1 freshman giant. Coach D had nothing to say, but Russ Morgan was looking tired and senior center, Quinton Downey got the nod. That was the best move for the Cougars. with 1:00 to play, Downey had already scored 6 consecutive points, including back-to-back MONSTER put back jams after a couple missed jumpers. Then the Cougars ramped upped the D, following Jake Dean's stranglehold on the opposing guard's offense, and closed the half down only 6, 20-20. J.J. Little manhandled the Cougars on the inside entering the lockeroom with 8 points and 8 rebounds.

Then the game became a tale of two halves. Seeing the fire in Downey, Coach D kept him in the game and Downey delievered 6 more points, cutting the lead to 4, with 10:20 remaining. The Cougars went into halftime shooting horribly at just 39% from the floor. However, they came out of the half blistering hitting 9 of their first 11. With 6:34 left, freshman forward, Dave Davenport streaks down the court after a great outlet pass by Albert Massey to tie the game at 40. That was the complete turning point of the game and the Cougars didn't let their lead fall below 7 with 4 minutes left in the game. The Cougars win this one with a big 2nd half surge, 57-46. On Sportscenter that evening, the player of the game stats were given to Albert Massey with a great all-around game of 7 points, 5 assists 4 rebounds, 2 blocks and 1 steal. However in the lockerroom, the game ball was given to senior, Quinton Downey who finished the game with 12 points, 4 rebounds and a steal. The Cougar bench outscored the Gents 32-8, which was the difference in this game. The Cougars now go back to the Dickens Center for a 3-game home stand:

TEAM BALL WINS GAMES!!!!
Jan. 3rd
Last year, even after going 27-2, the Cougars were overmatched and kicked out of the 1st round of the NCAA tournament by these Michigan Wolverines. The Cougars had a bone to pick and something to prove about being one of the elite teams in NCAA ranks. Again the Cougars' coaching staff was hoping for a good showing seeing that 2 more top recruits were visiting the campus this week. The Cougars entered the game pumped, with senior foward, Paris Mitchell opening the game with a drive followed with a the MONSTER one-handed jam. The Wolverines didn't let that exclamation point opener phase them, because the Michigan star forward, Dwayne Bradley followed suit with a 15ft J and a 3pt play on the next possesion. The Wolverines began to establish some dominance with 6:49 remaining, capping an 8-0 run and pushing the lead to 7, 15-8. The Cougars returned fire with their own 8-0 run late in the first half topped off by a Downey put back jam. The fast paced game paused at halftime 28-24, with soph forward, Jack Violette coming up with eight points and 1 board to lead all scorers.
Its amazing how pumped and focused the Cougars always seem coming out of halftime, and this 2nd half was no different. Following another big jam by Mitchell, the score was tied at 30 with 12:19 to go. However, with 10:50 to play, out of nowhere, soph. center Russ Morgan begins to limp and ask for the trainer. Coach Dillard calls a timeout to get Russ off of the floor and into the lockerroom. Morgan's injury must've got the team amped. With 6:02 left, freshman Jake Dean hits a wide open 3-pt shot followed by Drew Banks' drive, score and foul for the traditional 3pt play and a 50-42 lead.
However the Wolverines would not go away. Freshman guard, Viegas picked up his 3rd personal foul which sent the Wolverines to the line, and the lead fell to just 5. 2:25 remaining, and Banks scores his 10 and 11pts of the game with the monster jam over Bradley and the lead is back to 7. The Wolverines made deperate attempts to get back into the game but the Cougars held on to the win 58-55 with another solid win. Player of the game honor was given to Mitchell, who contributed ten points and three rebounds. Banks had a great game with eleven points and three assists. While the point guard tandem of Dean and Viegas added 13pts, 7 assists and 3 rebounds combined. Now a respectable 7-5, the Cougars will face the UMKC Kangaroos on Sat. Jan. 7th, at 4:00pm at the Dickens Center.

MMMM.....Jack in the BOX

3-7 UMKC Kangaroos vs. 7-5 Chicago State Cougars
With 2 starters out for at least another week(Carmichael, Morgan) the Cougars have a very short bench nowadays. Also with two freshmen filling in for the normal starters, Coach Dillard wasn't exactly sure what to expect. However, he found that freshman center, Stokes liked the limelight and may be exactly what A.C. Myers described as "Timmy Reloaded"(Tim Duncan). The Cougars never trailed in this game and by halftime, the were only up by 6, 24-18. Mr. Stokes had already made a major impact by that point, with eight points and five rebounds.
With 11:48, the Cougars had expanded the lead to ten 30-20, and the lead never fell below nine from that point on. The Cougars had an overwhelming rebounding edge, 34-23, led by Stokes who ended the game with twelve points, thirteen rebounds, a steal, player of the game honors and an opened eye by Coach Dillard.

Any hints on that aspect? I don't feel the love from the various and sundry High Schoolers. They won't even visit my budding program

BATTLE OF THE TITANS II-A Rivalry Continues........

8-5 (2-0) Chicago State Cougars vs. 8-1(2-0) Oak Union College Cardinals

The Oak Union College Cardinals have the right to brag. In fact, they should brag. Last year the Cougars scorched the NCAA ranks in the regular season with a 26-2 record. But the bragging part comes in when you see who the Cougars lost to. YES, OUC...both losses. The Cougars did get redemption with a 69-72 Mid-Cont. Conference Tourney victory last year but that wasn't enough.
Fast forward to this year and you see that both teams have started off hot yet again. With impressive wins against, Tennessee and Michigan to start the year, the Cardinals look to battle the Cougars again for that top spot in the Conference....now lets get to the tipoff!!!!!

The first half showed that the Cardinals came ready to play against the Cougars. OUC kept a high level of defensive pressure which led to a lot of easy turnovers. The Cougars did jump out to an early 4-0 lead, but after that the Cardinals dominated with great defense maintaining a 25-19 lead with 1:43 to go. However with halftime almost ended, freshman guard, Jake Dean hit a big 3pt basket to bring the Cougars within 3 by the beginnning of halftime. By halftime, the Cougars had already committed 10 turnovers due to sloppy overall play.
The 2nd half proved to be another "nail-biter" between these two good teams. 7'2 freshman center, Stokes continued his rebounding dominance in the game, picking up a big offensive rebound and 7ft jumber cut the lead to just 1 pt with 10:17 left in the half. With superb guard play the OUC Cardinals wouldn't relinquish the lead pulling the lead back to 10, 30-30 with 5 minutes left. However, the sophmore guard, D. Banks did not want to leave with another loss on his record, so he then decided to take over. Banks scored six unanswered points, including a big 360 jam off a break to take momentum, cut the lead to four, and give his team the extra "umph!" it needed to stay competitive. Banks then tied the game at 40 with 2:36 remaining, and the score did not move. Then with just 11.7 seconds in the game the Cougars had a chance to win, but missed attempts by Violette and Banks sent the game into OT!!!
In OT, the Cougars looked good. The SPORTSCENTER highlight of the night came after junior guard, Al Massey crossed over his defender with a behind-the-back move to the lane while the OUC center was sleeping. Massey went directly to the rack with the SICK, 360, T-MACKish jam and Cougars led 52-50. Then with sixteen seconds left, the Cougars had another chance to win. They inbounded the ball, but OUC wouldn't budge off of the Cougars' go to guys, Banks, Massey or Mitchell. So the freshman guard, Jake Dean got the ball and shot the open 3....NO GOOD and we are headed into our 2nd overtime, tied at 52.
The 2nd overtime was a test of willpower and stamina. Down the stretch, the COUGARS had too much of those. Sophmore forward, Jack Violette scored on the Cougars' first possesion with a layup and a foul. Then on the very next posession, Violette hit a short eight foot post jumper to build the lead to 3, 57-54. Following those great plays, the Cougars' freshman guard, "Hot Salsa," Paul Viegas scored on consecutive possessions to cap a 9-0 run and the win for the Cougars. The game ended 65-73 and the Cougars remained undefeated in conference play. POG honor was given the "Beanstalk, " freshman center Collier Stokes with ten points, three blocks, sixteen rebounds and two steals. In the lockerroom however, the gameball was give to Violette who won the game down the stretch for the Cougars(15pts,14reb,5ast 5/5FT).

Honerable Mention:
Viegas: 14pts, 3ast
Massey: 4pts 6ast, 5blk, 2stl
Mitchell: 11pts 9reb
Banks: 10pts 5reb

9-5 (3-0) Chcago State vs. 3-8 (0-2) Southern Utah

SIMPLE SYNOPSIS: CANOFWHOOPA**

Another tale of two halves here. The Eagles stayed with the Cougars for the entire 1st half, 27-27. However, the Cougars opened the second half with a 11-1 run to open the game 38-28 and never looked back. Part of that was the amped defense played by the Cougars who held the hot shooting Southern Utah (52% in the first half) to just 33% for the game. Player of the game honors went the "Big UP" Albert Massey with twelve points, two rebounds, and two assists. Freshman phemon, Collier Stokes added twelve points, eight boards, and an assist to round out the top performers.

ADDITIONAL NOTES:
The Florida A&M University Athletic Director finally responded to Coach Dillard's application for the head coaching position. Now with nearly five years of coaching experience under his belt, and a very respectable
100-41 record over that span, Coach Dillard has a very hard decision this off-season. Does he continue the run for the NCAA Championship as a Cougar or a Rattler??????

8-5 (4-1) Oral Roberts vs. 10-5 (4-0) Chicago State

Conference Title Matchup???

It seems like the Golden Eagles are in the Mid-Continental Conference ready to make noise this year. After losing their first four games, the Eagles rolled into Columbus and steamrolled a shocked Ohio State squad 63-41. After that point the Eagles have gone 7-1 and look to have the ability to win in Chicago. The Cougars also looked to be ready to play with the return of two starters, Halsted Carmichael and Russ Morgan. With the return of these two key elements, the Cougars looked poised to continue their run through the conference.

The Eagles opened the game with a 10-5 run to show the Cougars they meant business and even expanded the lead to 16-8 with 8:11 left and the Cougars looked slightly stunned by the defensive intensity by the Golden Eagles. Then Morgan showed why the Cougars missed him scoring four consectutive buckets to pull the Cougars within five by halftime, 27-22. The Cougars shot a dismal, 33% in the first half but the accompanying silver lining was the eleven offensive rebounds collected by the Cougars.

In the second half the Cougars battled back even and with just 16.9 seconds left the score was tied at fifty. The Cougars worked the ball around to get a good shot, but the Eagle defense was air-tight, and with .9 seconds remaining in regulation, senior forward Paris Mitchell threw up a desperation three-pointer to win, and thanks to home court advantage, the REF CALLED A FOUL!!!!! Mitchell, an 80% freethrow shooter, hit the first two attempts and puposefully missed the 3rd, to give the Cougars the win. Player of the game was given to Halsted Carmichael in his first game back off injury, with ten points, five assists, five rebounds and four blocks(5'11 PG...right?). The game breaker was the Cougars' offensive glass dominance, 16 -5. Paris Mitchell ended the game with ten points, five rebounds, two steals and an assist. The Cougars move to 11-5 and still undefeated in conference play and head out to Stillwater, OK to face the Cowboys and close out the non-conference schedule.

Chicago State Oulasts Leathernecks in Moline

Moline, Il(AP)

The #25 ranked Cougars survived a scare this past Thursday night, beating Western Illinois in an OT "barn-burner". Initially, the Leathernecks looked to be unafraid of the budding powerhouse by jumping to an early 11-4 lead. Lead by dominant inside play by sophmores, Russ Morgan and Jack Violette, the Cougars erased that deficit and muscled their way to a 30-23 lead by halftime. In the first half, Morgan contributed four points, and six boards; while Violette added six points, five rebounds, and two blocks and a comfortable margin for the Cougars at halftime.
In the second half, Western Illinois regained confidence behind their junior guard, Cody Brown who scored 14 of his 19 points in the 2nd half. Brown's play lead the way to a 14-0 run and 45-41 lead for the Leathernecks. To maintain pace, sophmore guard, Drew Banks hit his 3rd three pointer of the game and brought the Cougars back within 1, 54-55 with just 27 seconds to go. After being fouled, Brown hit one of two from the line, and the Cougars' "Big UP" Albert Massey, drove to the basket in the waning seconds to put the game into overtime!!!!!!!
Behind a strong OT showing by sophmore guard, Drew Banks, the Cougars pulled out the OT win 71-68. With this win the Cougars remain undefeated in confererence play(6-0, 13-5 overall), and get ready to go to Indiana, then Michigan to face IUPUI and Oak Union College.

Unfortunately for Jaguar fans, this one was over before it started. The Jaguars ran into a powerful Chicago State team and was completely overmatched.

The Cougars opened up a definitive eleven-point lead by halftime and did not decide to stop there. Lead by the outstanding play of two players who were injured earlier this year, the Cougars added twenty-three more points to the lead by the end of the game.

The Cougars played a superb defensive game, holding the Jaguars to just fourteen points in the 2nd half, and 26%fg shooting for the game.

Senior point guard, Halsted Carmichael lead all scorers with 19 points, 4 assists, 1 block, and 5 steals. Sophmore center, Russ Morgan added 7 points while dominating the glass with 19 rebounds for the game.

#25 14-5 (7-0) Chicago State vs. #18 14-2 (8-1) Oak Union College

BATTLE OF THE TITANS III-Regular Season Titans
ChiState 59 OUC 51

The game between these two conference rivals is definitely one to watch everytime they play. Earlier this year these two team met in Chicago and the game was pushed into DOUBLE OT, where the Cougars squeaked by with a 65-73 victory. Though OUC lost that game, both teams have continued their domination through the NCAA ranks with a 6-game winning streak, apiece, since that point.

Both teams came out of the gates a bit sluggish, however OUC looked more out-of-sync offensively, managing to shoot just 38% during the first half.

Despite the poor shooting performance, the Cardinals recognized this problem and started to attack the basket. This created a respectable freethrow advantage for the Cardinals, 17, compared to just 10 trips to the line for the Cougars.

OUC Senior PG Tim Shannon led his team(and all scorers) with ten points and two steals, including a three point shot in the waning seconds to put his team up three, 31-28 at halftime. The sophmore duo of Jack Violette, and Russ Morgan kept the Cougars competitive by keeping an offensive rebounding edge over OUC 12-2.

In the 2nd half, poor shooting continued for both teams with neither team breaking 45% shooting for the game(41%-chistate/31%-OUC). However, with just 5:20 remaining in the game, the Cougars began to hit shots at the most opportune time, going on a 14-0 run to end the game and comeback from being down 6 and win the game, 59-51.

Sophmore G Drew Banks(10 points and 3 assists) , who sparked the comeback with two late game three-pointers, was ecstatic about the win. "We allowed them to control the paceo of the game for most of the forty minutes we were out there. They like to slow it down, and jack up threes all day. Fortunately for us, they were not dropping for them today and we hit ours when we needed to," exclaimed Banks.

Senior Tim Shannon lead all scorers with 18 points and 2 assists, but only shot 6/21 from the field. Two of the other reliable scorers for the Cardinals did not fair any better with senior SG Nate Howard going 0/7 with just 2 points and junior forward Darryl Drayton adding 14 points and 7 rebounds off 6/15 shooting from the field.

Player of the game honors again went to the budding sophmore star, Russ Morgan who led the Cougars with 12 points 11 rebounds and 2 blocks. Sophmore forward, Jack Violette also added 8 points and 13 rebounds to this big win for the Cougars. Now the Cougars(8-0, 15-5 overall) have a two-game lead over the 2nd place Cardinals(8-2, 14-3 overall) in the Mid. Contenental Conference. After the poll results, the Cougars move up to #18 in both polls and Coach Dillard's team once again is rolling on all cylinders!!!!!!

I am usually just content to lurk on most forums, but I had to register just to say how much I have enjoyed reading all about the "Killa Chi" Legacy. Please keep posting the continuing saga of Coach Dillard and the Cougars...I'm now fascinated to find out whether Dillard will stay to capitalize on all of his 5 star recruits and win the NCAA Championship with the Cougars, or if he'll take his winning record and move to another school.

Thanks for keeping us so entertained. :D

6-12, (4-5) Western Illinois vs. #18 15-5, (8-0) Chicago State

Leathernecks Scare Cougars AGAIN

Earlier this season, the Cougars traveled down to Moline, Il and barely won against a hard-working W. Illinois in OT, 71-68. In addition to being in the friendly confines of the Dickens Center, the Leathernecks promising Super sophmore SG-Cody Brown(overall:80, 19 points and 8 boards in Moline) will be out this game while nursing a broken thumb so it definitely seemed that the Cougars had the upper-hand.

However, even without Brown's offensive firepower the Leathernecks came out with a great defensive gameplan holding a dangerous Chicago State team to just 41% shooting in the first half. Another difference was Western Illinois rebounding advantage, 18-15 in the first half. Junior forward, Darren Eppenheimer, lead the charge grabbing 9 of his game high 19 rebounds in the 1st half.

By halftime, the Cougars squad had only gained a small three point advantage, 25-22, following a long three-point basket made by senior guard, Halsted Carmichael(9 points, 3 assists, and 2 steals). "At halftime, we couldn't believe that they were still in it. Coach said they only shot 31% by halftime, and we only had a three-point lead to show for it and that's pathetic. We got out-hustled tonight, and MAN will we feel it in practice tonigh...I mean tomorrow," muttered senior forward, Paris Mitchell.

The Leathernecks continued to be MIA, going over six minutes before finding their first bucket of the 2nd half with a traditional three point play by senior, P.J. Nance, cutting the expanding Cougar lead to 11, 36-25. Including that score the Leathernecks went on a 8-0 run decreasing the lead to just 5, 31-36 with just 5:28 remaining.

The Cougars maintained that small edge for the remainder of the game and for the win, 47-44, behind a strong showing down the stretch by the player of the game, sophmore center, Russ Morgan. Morgan grabbed a team high 17 rebounds added 6 points, the majority of which were scored within the last two minutes.

The Leathernecks did get respectable outputs by senior guard, Dave Osbourne(11 points, 3 assists 3/4 3-pts) and junior foward, Darren Eppenheimer( 6 points, 19 rebounds, 2 assists) but it just wasn't enough to overcome a team's 34% shooting, and 15 turnovers.

The #18 ranked Cougars move to 16-5, 9-0 in conference and with just 7 games left, look ready to enter post-season play. Stay tuned!!!!

10-8, (7-4) Valpariaso Crusaders vs. 16-5 (9-0) Chicago State Cougars

Transcripts of Press Conference Following Cougars win, 75-69

Coach Dillard: ".....and of course we're happy to be in first place. Stifler, you had a question?"

Steven Stifler: "Yes, Coach. Valpo came out and scorched you guys, shooting like 70% for the 1st half. What did you guys do to cool them down in the 2nd half?"

Coach Dillard: "Actually, there wasn't much we could do. We did what we could to stay within arms length. I mean it does seem frustrating to shoot 53% as a team and still be down by 5 at halftime. But he!!, I think both Rusty [Russ Morgan] and Collier [Stokes] did a wonderful job. I think they combined for about 22 of our 34 points by halftime and that's definitely not something to hang our heads about. Finally Steve, they only shot 68%. Next question?"

Bruce Almighty: "Not to say I know everything, but Coach I would attribute your win to freethrow shooting. You guys shot over 90% at the line, how do you feel about that and your team's overall performance?"

Coach Dillard: "You hit it on the head, Bruce. Down the stretch, when we came back and were only up by five with a minute and a half remaining, Chickehawk[Halsted Carmichael] got that charge and went to the line. From there on out we went like what like....10 for 11 or something like that which made sure they could never just foul us. As far as overall team play, I mean we were exceptional. Like I said earlier, Collier had 18, Rusty had 14, Chickenhawk threw in 8, Frenchy[Paris Mitchell] had like 7 straight to bring us back, Jake [Dean] dished out 4 assists....I could go on and on, we did well but I loved the inside presence Rusty and Collier showed. I'd like to commend the Crusader player, as well, I mean [6'10, PF overall:87] Avery Gardner had 12 points, 6 rebounds and the senior James Keller lit us up off the bench for 14. Even that kid I tried to recruit a couple of years of ago, [soph. G] Chaz McNamara hit us up for 10. It was really a good game though. Anyone else?"

Luda Kris:"What about your rankings...are you happy about that too?"

Coach Dillard: "I believe ESPN might have a couple of what my guys would call "HATERS." I mean how do you win a game and lose your spot from 18 to 19. At least you guys have some sense, I mean the PRESS POLL ranked us at #16. You know normally I don't care about that stuff, but I want to have a chance to make it big time in the dance this year, I think this is the chance. Well, I'm tired now...I'll see you guys later."

I'm going to deviate from my normal writing style and just let everyone know, I just switched to HotShot's Roleplay Sliders. They are excellent and I want to let everyone know what happened the first two games I tried the sliders with roleplay in my legacy. I know I was caught off-guard initially by the playstyle and my inability to switch to the man closest to the ball and defend the computer. But actually that is what makes this way of playing tight. I was down in the first half to a half-azz squad (Southern Utah alum don't trip)...33-27 and they had a lead as large as 10 at one time. The computer was shooting a BLISTERING 54% in the 1st half and I began to wonder if the computer's sliders were too high. I also have to mention that my star pg, Halsted Carmichael and sr. forward, Paris Mitchell ended up in early foul trouble that I had nothing to do with which as refreshing and annoying at the same time. We were losing the rebounding battle( something that almost never happened with non-roleplaying mode) 15-11.
My boys opened up with and 11-0 run in the 2nd half( paced by Halsted Carmichael's 16pts 2stl blk ast). and never looked back. The game is definitely better this way.

My 2nd game was against the Mid cont. Conf. bottom feeders this year, IUPUI. As expected we mopped the floor with them, 73-46 on roleplay mode. I can't say enough times how nice if it feels to watch your stars perform like stars, and scrubs perform as expected. There are people whom you do NOT want the ball in their hands becuase they WILL get ripped, its just excellent. Try the roleplay sliders.....now back to our regularly scheduled program....

and with the win the Cougars move to 19-5 for the year with only 5 games left before the Mid. Cont. Tourney.

Cougars win 15th Straight in Tulsa
Chi 77 Ora 57
(AP) Tulsa, Ok

Coach Dillard and the "blue-hot" Cougars have rebounded from a rough start this year, winning their 15th straight and remain undefeated in conference play (20-5, 13-0 conf). The Cougars easily defeated the Oral Roberts' Golden Eagles, 77-57, in the MaBee Center this evening

The Cougars looked hungry and aggressive, sinking 26 of 34 trips to the charity stripe. Led by freshman center, Collier Stokes' seven points and fourteen rebounds, the Cougars also dominated in the rebounding catagory, 40-22, including twelve offensive rebounds.

"The kid is so quick at his size. Though he didn't score much tonight, he nearly singlehandedly dominated us on the boards tonight. "With him and cafeteria food, I'm SOOOO ready to be graduating," Eagles' senior center Brad Fox (2 pts 10 reb) joked.

The Cougars lead comfortably at halftime, 39-30 and with over nine minutes left in the second half, the Cougars reserves played out the remainder of the game, paced by freshman forward, Dave Davenport's ten points.

Senior guard, Halsted Carmichael walked away with POG honors contributing 15 points, 2 assists, 2 blocks and a steal. Eagles' senior guard, Laurence Bernard added 18 points and 2 rebounds, while promising freshman guard, Archie Murphy kicked in 14 points and 2 assists in the losing effort.

The Cougars look ahead to the last 3 games of the regular season vs. @UMKC, (home) Centenary, and @ Valpo.

Cougars make Kangaroos A Gourmet Meal

Chi 63 UMKC 36

Kansas City, Mo

The Cougars add another win to their regular season record after leaving the Municipal Auditorium tonight. The Cougars ended the game with a 27 point blowout over UMKC, 63-36.

Chicago State started the game very strong opening a 14-2 lead within the first six minutes of play. By halftime, Kangaroos did cut the lead to ten 26-16. Offensively, the Cougars were paced with a strong inside presence with Russ Morgan scoring six of his game high 15 points in the first half.

Coupled with flat shooting by the Kangaroos, the Cougar defense looked completely overwhelming, holding UMKC to just 21% shooting in the 1st half and 30% for the game. In the 2nd half, the Kangaroos didn't fare much better. The Cougars came out on all 14 cylinders, going on a 14-3 run to open the 2nd half. This run was capped by a MONSTER 360 jam and freethrow conversion by Morgan that blew the game wide open.

Morgan ended the game with 15 points and 7 boards plus player of the game honors. Freshman point guard also added 13 points while Albert Massey contributed 2 points, 8 rebounds, 2 assists, and 2 blocks. For UMKC, senior guard, Alexander Clark lead UMKC with 12 points and (jr) center, Jerome Allen, added 2 points and 7 boards.

To add injury to insult, UMKC lost starting point guard(jr) Orlando Taylor for the rest of the season with a broken thumb. The loss sends UMKC to 6th place in the conference with a 9-15 (5-9 conf) record. Also following tonight's Cougar win and Oak Union College loss to Oral Roberts, the Cougars are now 21-5, 14-0 in conference play and have outright won the Mid. Continental title.

There are just 2 more regular season games remaining for the Cougars,

Cougars' End Home Senior Night With a Bang
Chi 66 Cent 49

Chicago, Illinois

The Cougars looked slightly weary following the rollercoaster of emotion that engulfed the Dickens Center this evening. For at least four Cougars, tonight's win will remain as an everlasting memory of a bright marker showing how far the "Upstart Cougars" have come. There has been growth for the entire team and coaching staff, but especially this set of seniors. This group watched star after star emerge under Coach Dillard and his staff's tenure until it was their turn to shine.

Coach Dillard definitely made it Senior Night by starting all four graduating seniors-

Point guard, Halsted "Chickenhawk" Carmichael(Overall: 88, Season: 8.3 ppg/3.8 apg, 84.6FT%)- The definition of overachiever. Was recruited by Coach Dillard mainly for quickness and defensive purposes. At only 5'5 inches as a freshman, Halsted was a hair's length from being cut from the squad. But with a GREAT work ethic, and 5 inch growth spurt entering his sophmore year, Halsted emerged to steal precious playtime from starting guard, Sam Power as ja sophmore. By his junior year, Carmichael solidified himself as the definite #2 PG, just waiting for the opportunity to shine. Now as a senior, Carmichael has shown himself to be an excellent scorer/distributor, and a defensive master. With his tireless work ethic, ability defend nearly anyone, and sharpshooting mid-range jumper, many NBA scouts are comparing his play to the legendary, John Stockton.

Shooting Guard, Archie "Dead-eye Stickman" Ball (Overall: 74, Career: 2.2ppg)- Becuase of his flamboyant attitude and 6'0 144lb frame, Ball earned the nickname "Stickler" on campus. His ability to shoot from anywhere earned the name "Dead-Eye" on the court. Though anytime he was in he was one of the best shooters on the court, Archie fell down Coach Dillard's roster simply because he refused to play defense. A high flyer and excellent long range shooter, Ball will be torching guys on the pick-up courts for years to come.

Small Forward, Paris "Leaning Tower" Mitchell (Overall: 82, Season: 7.5 apg): Living proof that "White Men Can Jump." Easily the one of the most consistent players on the entire Cougar squad these past four years. Paris also holds the school record for "Most Camera Flashes during a 360 Dunk." Many people think that Paris earned the nick "Leaning Tower" just by relating his name to the French City. But honestly, the name was made by teammate, Paul Viegas after Mitchell dunked one-handed on two Centary centers. Mr. Mitchell has increased his 3 point shooting ability to a point where leaving his open is like playing Russian roulette with five bullets in a six-shooter. Paris also showed the nack to block most incoming shots without fouling, what a great college player!!!

Center, Quinton "Elijah P." Downey (Overall: 76, Season: 4.0 ppg/2.8 rpg): During his freshman year, Quinton showed potential to be a major force down low and "heir-apparent" to college star, Justin Little. Unfortunely, a freak in-game, accident where Downey pulled his abdominal muscled earned his the nick, Elijah P.(after the villian in UNBREAKABLE). Though no longer showing the consistent post dominance that appeared his freshman year, Quinton remains an emotional catalyst for the Cougar squad making solid contributions off the bench.

The Cougars won handily over the Centenary Gents, 66-49. In his final home game, Halsted Carmichael won Player of the Game honors contributing 8 points, 3 assists, 3 steals, and 2 blocks. The Cougars also held a commanding rebounding edge, 41-17. This win moved the Cougars further into first place, with a 22-5 record overall, and the Cougars still remain undefeated in conference play with 15 wins and zero losses. The Cougars look to end the regular season undefeated in conference play facing Valpariso in Indiana.

A Season's End
CHI 60 VAL 53

Valpariaso, Indiana

The regular season ride is over with the Cougars closing out the year with another win, an impressive 18 game win streak, and the Mid. Cont. Conference title. This last regular season win didn't come easily however. Valparaiso did a great job of staying aggressive and keeping the Cougars in check during the first half.

The Crusaders sophmore point guard, Blake Cox, started the game "blue-hot," singlehandedly out-scoring the entire Cougar team 9-2. However with almost 11 minutes remaining in the game, Blake picked up his 2nd foul and headed to the bench.

Without Cox in the game, Valpo still didn't miss a beat with senior guard, James Keller coming in scoring an additional 9 points in the first half. Also, with 3 Cougar starters in foul trouble(Massey, Morgan, Violette), the Crusaders were able to push the lead comfortably to 10 with five minutes left in the first half.

After a couple of big buckets by senior forward, Paris Mitchell the lead was cut to five and by halftime, Valpo had a 6-point lead, 28-34. The Crusaders also did a wonderful job on the boards, keeping pace with the Cougars 18-17 in the rebounding department.

The 2nd half saw Valpo, attempt to go for the Cougars' jugular coming out the gate with an 8-2 run. However, the Cougars countered with a 7-0 run of their own capped by a big 3-point basket by Paris Mitchell.

With hustle and great defense, the Cougars cut the lead to two, and tied the game following the freshman, Dave Davenport's big jumper from the top of the key. From there, the game continued to see-saw, even after the Crusader's sophmore center, Ryan Murphy hit his 5th and 6th points of the game with a big jumper over the outstretched hand of Russ Morgan.

With just 35 seconds left, (jr) guard, Albert Massey found a streaking Carmichael after a big rebound for a Cougars' 58-52 lead which sealed the game. Valparaiso was definitely missing the contribution of their talented forward, Avery Gardner who scored just had 8 rebounds but scored just four points off 1/7 shooting for the night.

The last regular season Player of the Game honors were given to Halsted Carmichael with a great all-around game of 10 points, 4 assists, 4 BLOCKS(at 5'10) and 2 steals. Senior, Paris Mitchell added 14 pts 4 rebounds, while Violette and Mogan chipped in 21 points and and 16 rebounds combined.

As the season ends, Coach Dillard invites the coaches, fans, and press to visit the UPSTART MVP THREAD (http://www.espnvideogames.com/community/forums/viewtopic.php?t=10878)!!!!!! Thanks for lookin' out!!!!

Chicago Moon Tribunal Newspaper Editorials: Fan's Response to End of Season Ranking

Now the Cougars have ended the regular season 23-5, 16-0 in conference play and big wins over big schools like, Michigan, Oklahoma State, Illinois and #2 Rutgers. You would think that the people out there would respect this team as a potential powerhouse. But as one fan aptly put it..."powerhouses make it out of the first round, right Gator fans?," and ESPN pollsters definitely agree. Here are this year's TOP 25 squads ranked initially by the ESPN poll. The numbers following each team's record is their rank by the pollsters and by RPI, respectively.

ESPN TOP 25

#1 Cinn 27-0 (1) (1)----------#14 Kans 19-6 (14) (14)

#2 Rutg 23-2 (2) (3)----------#15 Syra 23-5 (15) (15)

#3 MSU 22-4 (3) (2)----------#16 Wisc 24-6 (16) (6)

#4 CoSt 20-3 (4) (4)----------#17 TxaM 22-4 (17) (15)

#5 UNLV 20-3 (6) (16)----------#17 TxaM 22-4 (17) (15)

#6 Arka 22-5 (5) (7)----------#18 Utah 20-4 (19) (8)

#7 Texa 20-3 (9) (9)----------#19 Ariz 18-6 (18) (n/a)

#8 Sien 26-1 (8) (13)----------#20 Flor 22-6 (20) (17)

#9 Prov 22-6 (7) (12)----------#21 Stan 21-6 (21) (24)

#10 SHall 23-3 (12) (10)----------#22 Stjs 22-3 (22) (19)

#11 Char 20-3 (10) (8)----------#23 Gonz 22-2 (23) (25)

#12 Louis 20-5 (11) (5)----------#24 Neva 19-4 (25) (22)

#13 Xavr 24-3 (13) (18)----------#25 Villa 20-6 (n/a) (20)

--------------------#26 ChiSt 23-5 (25) (23)----------------------

Now I don't want to sound like a hater....OK YES I do...becuase before the the win vs. Valpo, Chicago State was ranked #16 in ESPN/Press poll. With one last week following that game, the Cougars dropped off the Map and that's insane. Arizona, Kansas and UNL...who, are living off name recognition and that SUCKS. I am an avid Chicago State fan and we've got at least 3 kids good enough to hit the league today(Carmichael: 88, Massey: 87, Violette: 87)!!! This is plain bullcrap, and ESPN and the Press Pollsters should be ashamed of themselves!!! That's my two cents for the show!!!

Cougar Seniors Come up Big Against Centenary
Chi 57 Cent 45

Allen Field House, 1st Round Mid-Con Tournament

The Cougars won both regular season meetings between these two teams and the post-season proved to be no different. The Cougars even started hot with Halsted Carmichael opening the game with a pull-up 3 pointer to set the pace for his team.

Following the initial offensive outburst, Carmichael showed his NBA-caliber defensive skills by making a big block on the defensive end. Carmichael's play in the outset of the game seemed to dictate the overall play of the Cougars this evening. "It seemed like that lil' cat was everywhere at all times. He's so quick on the ball, and his vertical is tremendous. I think he got 2 of my shots and I have 4 inches on him, " explained Gents' (sr) sg, Bobby Christian.

Quinton Downey, another Cougar senior, then decided to amp up his level of play as well. With just 4:20 remaining in the first half and his team already up by 10, Downey energized his team even more by reeling 8 consecutive points. Downey's dominating play lead the Cougars into halftime up by 14, 20-34.

The Cougar defense was stifling, holding the Gents to just .253 shooting in the first half. Chicago State also held a commanding 23(6)-12(5) rebounding advantage that consistently held the Gents to one shot opportunity per possession.

During the 2nd half, the Cougars continued to cruise never letting the lead fall below eleven. Centenary did hold a decisive freethrow advantage, getting to the line 10 more times. Unfortunately, these advantage didn't translate to a win.

Player of the Game, Halsted Carmichael: 11 points, 3 assists, 5 blocks

Valparaiso fans ecstatic about 2nd round upset over Chicago State

Crusaders defeat defending Mid-Con Champions
Valpo 64 Chi 49

Allen Field House, 2nd Round Mid-Con Tournament

After devouring the UMKC Kangaroos in the first round, the Crusaders looked hungry for more meat and found the Cougars. After winning 19 straight ,the Cougars were in shock as they saw their chance of back-to-back Mid-Con titles slip away.
Early in the game, the Cougars seemed to have the upper hand with a 21-15 lead paced by strong inside play by Collier Stokes and Russ Morgan. Each player contributed 6 points a piece, but didn't seem to have their normal rebounding dominance with only 1 and 2 rebounds, respectively.

However, with over eight minutes remaining, Valpo turned up their level of play going on a 15-2 run lead by their star forward, Avery Gardner. Gardner had 10 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists and a steal in the 1st half alone, which was a complete turnaround from his poor showing in the season finale between these two teams.

By halftime, the Cougars looked bewildered as the Crusaders had a 7 point lead 32-25. Valpariaso also looked like offensive juggernauts, shooting a blistering 65% in the first half. "It was like once,[Gardner] shots started falling, all of our shots did and we liked being in control of this team for once," stated (so) guard, Blake Cox who added 6 of his 11 points in the first half.

At the outset of the 2nd half, things only got worse for the Cougars as (sr) guard, Halsted Carmichael fell taking another charge, and fell akwardly to somehow severly cut his arm open. After cleaning up the blood on the court play resumed and the Cougars quickly found themselves down by 15, 40-25.

TAfter a Cougar timeout, (jr) forward, Albert Massey decided to take matters into his own hand. Massey reeled off 6 straight points, and sparked a 14-0 run that tied the game at 43 with just 4:03 remaining.

However, the Crusaders weathered the storm and and brought "rain" of their own with two consecutive three-point plays by Blake Cox and Avery Gardner. Avery Gardner then put the game away with his 16th and 17th points at the freethrow line.

The Cougars were held to just 38% shooting from the field while the Crusaders continued to "fill it up" at 56% for the game. Now with this big loss, the Cougars can only prey that they did enough during the regular season to impress the selections committee for an at-large bid.

Louisville coach guides his players past the Cougars in the first round of the NCAA Tournament

1st Round Tournament Roudup

(AP)Cleveland, Ohio

The Mid-West bracket #5 seed, Louisville survived a tough 1st round matchup, 67-62, against an up and coming powerhouse, #12 seed, Chicago State University. Leading by as much as 11 in the 1st half, the Cardinals allowed that lead to dwindle to just 3 points by halftime.

The Cardinals got great production from their bench, outscoring the Cougar bench 36-22. Player of the Game, (so) guard Tom West said, "We came out ready to play and we jumped to the big lead and got complacent. Luckily for us, we hit a couple of big shots down the stretch to go ahead for the win. You have to give these guys credit though, they are definitely an upper eschilon team in the making."

The Cougars were very sloppy in the 2nd half, turning the ball over 13 times, while committing only 3 in the 1st half. "Turnovers in a big game usually points to poor point guard play. I take 100% of the blame for those mistakes, and my role in this loss," Carmichael replied sadly.

The Cougars go home in doubt that their head coach, Dee Dillard will even be around next year. Sources say that this will be his last year at Chicago State, and will move on to coach at his alma mater, Florida A&M.

The Cardinals move on to the 2nd round to face, #4 seeded Colorado State Friday at 1:00pm on ESPN.

#7 seeded Blue Demons will face #2 seed, Providence in the 2nd round

1st Round Upsets

(AP) New York, Ny

Nearly 20% of this year's 1st round matchups featured unlikely team moving on to the next round.

First of all, the biggest shocker came when #14 seed SE Louisana entered the 1st round and waxed the floor with the #3 seed in the West, Arkansas, 78-55.

Also in the West bracket, Atlantic-10 champion and #11 seeded George Washington defeated (an overated) #6 seed Oklahoma State, 71-62.

Moving down South, we found only one upset, #13 seeded George Mason shocked #4 seeded Charlotte.

In the East, there were 3 big upsets, with the #11, #12, and #13 seed moving on to the 2nd round.

#11 Siena torched the SEC contender, #6 Mississippi State, 64-49.

#13 College of Charleston squeaked by #4 Utah in an exciting overtime game, 68-67.

Finally, #12 Northern Ill. outmatched #5 Arizona 61-51.

With all of these lower seeds making it further in the tourney, the NCAA tourney is definitely full of madness this year.

MSU Coach is pumped as Michgan State wins its 3rd National Championship

Michigan State Gains 3rd National Championship

(AP) East Lasing, Mi

Michigan State fans on both sides of Red Cedar River are still pumped after last night's win over #1 seed Seton Hall, 84-56.

"Growing up in Waterford all I ever wanted to do was go to Michigan State. Now that's a reality, and now we've even won a national championship. I can't see life getting much better than this," exclaimed Tournement MVP, (jr) forward, Garrett Stewart.

After a hard-earned win,74-71, over reigning National Champ, Colorado State in the Final Four, the Spartans completely dismantled a weary Seton Hall defense. Runner-up Seton Hall defeated #7 Depaul in OT, 62-58.

Is Coach Dillard heading to Tallahasse?

BREAKING NEWS

(AP) Chicago, Il
In other news, former Chicago State head coach, Dee Dillard has annouced his departure from Chicago State. Dee Dillard has agreed to be the new head coach for his struggling alma mater, Florida A&M University. Last year FAMU was in last place in the MEAC toting a dismal 6-20 overall record.

"I am sad to leave Chicago State, but I believe that this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that I cannot pass up," stated Dillard in today's press conference. Coach Dillard created a budding powerhouse out of Chicago State leaving the Cougars with an impressive 112-43 record overall, 3 NCAA appearances, and 2-Mid-Con. Titles.

Illinois State University and the University of Denver were also reported to be volleying for Coach Dillard's services. Coach Dillard will arrive in Tallahassee, Fl on Sunday and begin looking over applications for assistant coaches and begin "early-bird" recruiting.

Assistant Coach, Al Goss
Overland Park, Kansas
-A very good recruiter and scout, Al is the kind of guy who could sell you your own shoes. Not worrying much about defense, Al makes a great compliment to me by focusing more on the offensive side of the ball. However, don't expect Al to stay in one place too long as he doesn't seem to have much loyalty to the school. Reminder: DO NOT LET AL call any timeouts, or expect solid work in the gameplanning department from him.

Assistant Coach, Adrian Fisher
Sparks, Nevada
-Will be a very good asset being that this guy can really plan for the upcoming games, and will add more backing to my personal love for defense. "Fish" seems to also have a knack for getting the bench involved well but I don't think he'll help us much offensively. Also, he not the greatest recruiter and I'm not really sure how long he'll be with us either.

Phil Minifield, point guard
Offensive: B-, Def: B+
6'1, 159lb, senior, Hometown: Albany, Georgia
--------------------------------------------------------
-Will shut down nearly every point guard he plays, almost perfect timing for steals
-has top notch ballhanding/passing skills(one of the best in NCAA ranks)
-Will definitely be the guy down the stretch defensively, a "tier-1" defensive player in the clutch
-May be a liability, gets tired way too quickly
-may have slight trouble defending more physical guards

-Also has top notch ballhanding/passing skills(one of the best in NCAA ranks) to compliment Minifield for a great starting backcourt
-Will definitely be ou go-to-guy down in the clutch, offensively and defensively
-Will add some defensive rebounding capabilities to team
-Overall defensive skills a little lacking

Scooter Bailey, small forward
Offensive: C-, Def: A
6'6, 198lb, senior, Hometown: Fort Pierce, Fl

-Easily one of the best defenders in NCAA
-Also has top notch ballhanding and can break everyone's ankles in practice, excluding mine and Minifield
-WILL NOT allow his man to score down the stretch
-Can leave his feet for the shot and still make a great decision in air
-Can't hit the starboard side of the Titanic when well defended
-Best Defensive Rebounder on team

Brad Blackwell, power foward
Offensive: C+, Def: B

-Need to learn some defensive rebounding capabilities for team
-this close from failing, defensively

Coach Dillard Gets 1st Victory Rattler's Head Coach

November 28th, 2008
(AP) Davidson, NC

Snatched from the jaws of what? That final word was not in the vocabulary of FAMU Rattlers, at least not today against Davidson. In his debut game as head coach of the Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University(pronouced FAM-YOU) Rattlers, Coach Dillard seems to be a destined for greatness yet again.

The Rattlers came back from an eight point deficit and a woeful 22% shooting performance in the first half to end the game with a , grindING...victory, 55-52.

The Wildcats had already made one trip to Tallahassee, a 82-47 wax job by the hands the FSU. Now 0-1, and bitter from the loss, Davidson was ready to pick on someone their own size.

Starting off slow, the contest really didn't begin until (jr) guard, Earl Watson hit a big 3-point shot that was follwwed by an old fashioned 3-point play completed by (sr) guard, Will Kanter. These big baskets capped an 8-point run that gave Davidson a commanding 11-4 lead with 7:14 to play in the half.

At halftime, Davidson was up by eight, 17-25 mainly becuase of a quick, accuate trigger beyond the arc (Davidson: 3/4 3-pointers in first half), lead by Kanter who scored, 12 of his game high 20 in the 1st half.

Both teams picked up their shooting a bit in the 2nd half( game stats, FAMU: 36%fg Davidson: 42% fg) while playing relatively mistake free basketball( Turnovers, FAMU:5 Davidson: 7).

The Rattlers moved closer to Davidson, energized by the hot shooting of freshman center, Russ Gabler, who scored 8 consecutive points to bring his team within four. "I knew the kid could shoot but, WOW! He almost singlehandedly brought us back, and you KNOW I feel a lot more comfortable knowing we've got a big guy who can step back and hit that midrange J consistently," exclaimed FAMU's (sr) guard, Chad Carroll.

The overall character of this Rattler squad's committment to excellence was eptiomized by one posession. Down by just two, with 2:20 to play, the Rattlers overcame two of thier shots being blocked and three missed shots(six offensive boards on one play), before (fr) foward, Brad Blackwell tied it up with a sweet baseline fadeaway.

The tie was broken by a BIG momentum swinging 3-pointer by Carroll, and the Rattlers hit a couple big freethrows with :10 seconds to go to put the Rattlers up 55-52, and able to leave Davidson, NC with the win.

"These guys showed me that they want to win. If we put everything on the line to win, every game, like we did here tonight we will definitely win our fair share this year," commented Coach Dillard.

The Rattlers now head up to Maryland to face University of Maryland-Baltimore County on Tuesday. Davidson heads south to a cat fight in Charleston, SC.

Subject: Sorry to miss Davidson Game/Jabhari Sykes
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I'm sorry that I missed that Davidson game, guys but my dad decided he couldn't marry this lady (ya know she's the one...the 3rd one to be exact) without me.

Anyway, I was watcing the ESPNsports play by play on the website, and saw what Kurt did off the bench. What did i tell you guys about that kid, he hustles! Anyway great win.

By the way as you guys know I'm up here in freezing azz Limestone, Maine. Me and my dad are at this Italian restaurant, and I overheard some people talking about this high school kid, Jabahri Sykes. His high school is about twenty-some miles from here so I couldn't get to the kid's game on Friday, but I did some research at the library, and MAN let me tell you!!!

This guy is a sleeper. 6'7 192, so he's a little thin but you know he'll grow into that. But talk about defense, 13 ppg, and 7 blocks a game, he's a beast!!! The papers say his top choice schools are Bucknell, Howard, and Youngstown St, so I know FAMU could be a possibility.

Maybe we can look into Jabahri more but in the meantime, take a look at the website i sent ya with those "pics"(ohh, laa laa), and make sure Thomas Lawrence stays focused, he thinks he's some kind of campus P-I-M-P. I'll be back tomorrow night and in bright and early Monday.
C-ya'll then.

Rattlers Win Again on the Road
FAMU 49 UMBC 38

December 2nd, 2008
(AP) Baltimore, Md

Poor shooting is UMBC's achilles heel and also the main reason UMBC lost to the Rattlers tonight, 49-38. The Retrievers came out ice cold shooting a dismal, 20% from the field and scoring just 14 points in the first half. The missed shots were wide open, uncontested shots. The UMBC guards, (fr) Jack Laudato, (jr) Alfred Mitchell, and (jr) Brett Crawford combined for 7/31 and 0/6 from 3-point land.

"I'm not taking anything away from the Rattlers becuase they played a solid game to win, but we sure didn't make it hard for them," muttered Mitchell. For the game UMBC shot 27% and hit just 1/12 from beyond the arc.

Down by 10 at halftime, the Retrievers did make a run in the 2nd half to cut the lead to just 6 points with ten minutes left in the game. But following back to back 3-point plays by Rattler guard, Phil Minifield, the game opened back up and ended up being too much for the Retrievers to handle.

Lead by (jr) Kurt Martin's 8 points and 8(7off) rebounds, the Rattlers' bench did a great job in relief of their starters, outscoring the Retreiver bench 28-7. "Neither team came out and shot well tonight, so I think that our bench came out there and dominated in every other necessary aspect. We are very proud of the effort they put out there," commented Rattler assistant coach, Adrian Fisher.

Rattlers Steamroll Brown in 1st Home Game

December 6th, 2008
(AP) Gaither Gym-Tallahassee, Fl

The (3-1) Rattlers even with another poor shooting night, came away with another win behind the great play of their senior backcourt. (3-2) Brown came into Tallahassee with a 3-game win streak defeating Howard, Holy Cross and Colombia but couldn't find the stroke in Gaither Gymnasium losing to FAMU 49-35.

The Bears' senior guard, Taylor Pierce (last year's Ivy League top assist man) only had 1 assist for the night, while scoring just 5 points off a 2/15 shooting night. "I think we underestimated their defense. Between Phil[Minifield], Scooter and the others supporting those two guys, its very tough to get any good looks against them. Defensively, they are a lot better than they look on paper," commented Brown coach, Bernie Lanchette.

After already being up 25-19 by halftime, the Rattlers opened the 2nd half with a 13-0 lead that sealed the game. "The thing i think that opened it for us was the sweet "oop" that Mini-me[Minifield] threw to Scoot[Bailey]. That got the crowd up, and everyone on the team hype and we just kinda cruised from there," added senior guard, Chad Carroll.

The Rattlers also got another great contribution from their bench, especially their back-up center, freshman Antoine Grant(3 points, 7 rebounds, 1 steal). North Dakota native, Brad Blackwell added 4 points and 14 rebounds in another solid rebounding effort.

"I think the guys came out ready to impress the home crowd, and did accomplished their goal tonight with this big win," addded Rattler assistant coach, Al Goss.

Its now week 5 and the NCAA Men's Basketball season is almost in full swing. With so many great teams out there, this week I'm going to start something new with The Weekly Word. Every week, we are going to profile 3 sets of teams in the NCAA, Contenders, Pretenders, and those teams that seem to be just "Under the Radar."

Contenders

http://graphics.fansonly.com/photos/schools/msu/sports/m-baskbl/auto_ap/pauldavis-minn.jpg
6'7 junior, Anthony Bracy gives the Spartans an edge at shooting guard but is it enough to repeat?

#1-ESPN/AP-(5-0) Michigan State Spartans

-I mean what can you say. They are the defending champions, and they look to be on the right track to do it again. They have beaten Seton Hall, St. Joes, and they even tought Rutgers a tough, 95-72 lesson. These guys look for real again this year, and behind, arguably, the best front line in the nation with (jr) guard Anthony Bracy, (fr) center, Brent Ere, and (so) forward, Rick Nsonwu-Amadi they probably are for real this year and the next couple.

Pretenders

http://www.herdzone.com/photos/1777.jpg
Senior point guard, Alvin Santee is good but he's going to need some help.

#23-ESPN/AP-(4-2) Marshall Thundering Herd
-These guys were a preason Top 10(#10 to be exact) and have fallen quickly. Outhustled by St. Joes, and out-gunned by Duke the Thundering Herd is starting to whisper. Senior point guard, Alvin Santee averages 7.8 ppg, 3.2rpg, and an impressive 7.0 assists. But he's going to need more help from the other FOUR starting seniors that Marshall used last year to earn a 23-4 record in the regular season.

Under the Radar

http://www.rolltide.com/images/11115.jpg
The Crimson Tide look like they might roll over a couple of people this year on the way to the tournament

(7-1) Alabama Crimson Tide
- The Tide seem to be showing off a bit this year demolishing UGA (74-54), and (7-1) Auburn (75-40) earlier this year. Their first real test will come in the form of #20 (4-0) UAB, in a battle for Alabama bragging rights. Alabama can and will do well if sophmores, Seth Cole and Paul Shumate continue to come to play like they have done so far this year.

Subject: New Hampshire Game/Possible Recruit
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hey Dee? I know you want us to meet in the morning in preparation for the New Hampshire game on Sunday, so I've taken the liberty to look at a bit of game film this morning. I want to give you head's up about the play of their center up there, Cal Jordan. I watched this guy over and over, and his play isn't just on the boards like we initially thought. This guy can score and play defense. If we're not careful and disciplined he may dominate us, boxing out the youngsters(Blackwell and Gabler), and he's pretty much too big for everyone else. I also suggest that we let Minifield and Chad[Carroll]know about his aggressiveness so hopefully we can get him in early foul trouble. That's my 2 cents on that guy.

Now on the "possible recruit." I've got this girl "friend", that knows a guy, that knows a girl, that know a guy, who coaches this kid(you still with me?) out in Texas(Noacodoches, to be exact). Kid's name is Jerrod Pritchard. He's a 6'10 262 scoring machine. Now I didn't say he's the fastest thing on the court but he may help us beef up a bit when all of these seniors graduate. We do have a couple of strikes against us for him to consider us though since he's looking for immediate playing time(with Russ, Blackwell, and Grant....hmm), a place close to home(Texas isn't that far is it?). But the good thing is he's looking for a good coach and since you've got me, we've got that covered(j/k). Anyway, I'm about to turn off my ESPN Total Vision service and go to bed. By the way, when are you going to catch up with the times, man? Email is so 2004.

Strike, Strike, and Strike Again,

Assitant Coach Adrian Fisher

Looks like another week gone, and after examining the Top 25 from this week, it looks we have a plethora of contenders and pretenders to choose from for this week's Weekly Word. Because of column constraints, we are only going to choose our biggest C&P's for the week.

Contenders

Can (jr) Drew Banks and the rest of the Cougars do something without Dillard at the helm?

#9-ESPN/AP-(8-0) Chicago State Cougars

-You would think now that Dee Dillard has moved on to Florida A&M, these guys would be rattled(no pun intended). However, with Dillard gone, Chicago State has earned its highest ranking ever in school history. Don't be fooled though, with the recruiting class that Dillard left, Chicago State had no choice but to do well. This year, the Cougars have already beaten Cincinnati(in Cincinnati), UCLA, #6 Arizona(in OT), and #16 Texas A&M.
The reason: These guys may have gotten a Dickie V style, diaper dandy in freshman point guard, Lewis Snipes (9.2ppg and 2.4apg). In addition to Snipes, (jr) Drew Banks also looks back to form after a serious knee injury his freshman year(broken patella), leading his team in scoring with 11 ppg.

Pretenders

The Knight's would like to get back to the feeling of being a championship caliber team like last year's season

#15-ESPN/AP-(4-3) Rutgers Scarlet Knights

Is it fair that Rutgers be put on our list for pretenders even though they have only temporarily lost star point guard, Larry Moore (Overall:94) to injury? I say "yes." Even though Knights have lost Moore for another two weeks(the only team they have to play in that period is Stanford), it is way too embarrassing for the Knights to go on a 3-game skid and to be plastered by Wisconsin by 43 AT HOME. With the return of Moore, we'll probably see the Knights around tourney time, but if I'm not mistaken, Rutgers was a #1 seed in the tournament last year and during the field of 32, did anyone say "upset, please?"

The Wolfpack looks hungry, and ready to compete for ACC crown

(6-0) North Carolina State Wolfpack

With impressive wins over Wisconsin and Miami, the Wolfpack looks poised to make a little "elbow-room" for themselves in the ACC this year. They boast 2006-2007 ACC Top Scorer, (sr) forward, James Harris who is averaging just under 14 ppg this year. In addition this year, Harris has help in the forms of (so) guard, Thomas Hunt(16.3 ppg, 3.7rpg) and (so) forward, Tobias Perry(11.3ppg, 7.2rpg). With this trio scoring like they do, Duke had better watch out.

New Hampshire (sr) guard, Lawrence Melvin hits a wide open jumper as New Hampshire ends Rattler win streak at 3

Wildcats Almost Lose Lead Late

The Wildcats starting backcourt scored 33 of the team's 64 total points to move on for a big win against the Rattlers. Senior, Lawrence Melvin scored 17 points, and (jr) guard, Will McFarlin added 16 as the Wildcats shot 55% as a team for the game.

"It seemed like everything I shot, except freethrows, was going down. When they kept giving us the open looks, we were taking and making the shots," commented Melvin.

The Cougars continued they're poor shooting, topping off for the game at 36%, while shooting even more horribly in the 1st half at only 24%. "Coach said that this poor shooting would bite us in the and looks like he was right," said Chad Carroll who scored 13 points, all in the 2nd half.

The Cougars were down by 19 at halftime and looked as if they had given up. With Carroll in early foul trouble(3rd w/4:52 in 1st half) the Cougars looked lost and unorganized. With his reinsertion in the 2nd half, the Cougars made a valiant effort to come back. With 1:25, left in the game (fr) center, Russ Gabler scored his 14th point cutting the lead to just 10 points.

After bonus freethrows were missed on 2 consecutive possesions by the Wildcats, the Cougars capitalized on their possessions with 2 big 3-point shots by Carroll and Mason. Unfortunately for the Rattlers time ran out and they lose, 64-60.

"Even if you rebound until the cows come home, you cannot just go out there, throw up the ball and expect it to go in. If you can't shoot the ball, don't shoot the ball," Dillard told his team after the game. The comment was probably directed towards (fr) Brad Blackwell who did lead the team in rebounding with 12 but shot just 2/10 for the night.

Dillard Maintains his Mastery Over the Jaguars

Its bad when a coach moves halfway across the country and can say "who's your daddy!" from long distance. This is pretty much how IUPUI feels with Coach Dee Dillard. The Jaguars have never won a game against Dillard, who is now 11-0 vs. the Jaguars during his career.

This one looked as if it would be over quickly, as the Rattlers jumped out to an early 16-4 lead with just 7:14 remaining. The 1st eight points were all scored by (sr) guard, Phil Minifield who added, "Coach was just on the bench smiling all game, as if he was 100% sure we'd win this one."

The Jaguars did put up a little fight with a 6-0 run to end the half, and down by 7 points 19-26. However, the Rattlers defense came out stifling holding the Jaguars to just 8 points and forcing 10 of the Jagars 16 turnovers in the 2nd half.

The Rattlers also maintained a sizable rebounding advantage, 42-26. This was augmented by the groin injury to Jaguars' (so) forward, Brett Socwell who left the game with 4 points and 5 rebounds in the waning minutes of the 1st half.

The Rattler coaches were please with the victory and added, "our young men looked very good out there. If we can continue to give a consistent defensive effort every year, believe me we can beat some TEAMS this year," commented Adrian Fisher, the Rattler assistant coach.

S. Georgia State Falls Into Snake Pit

"I looked up at the scoreboard at halftime and I kind of felt bad for them, really," commented Blackwell, the Rattler's freshman forward. He had pity for his opponent because at halftime, they were down by 25 points and had only scored 8 points in the first half. The Rattlers went on to win big by 40, 61-21.

The Rattlers continued their defensive dominance shown last game, by holding the Falcons to just 17% shooting in the first half and 20% for the game. Actually the Rattlers lead in every statistical catagory excluding assists(7-6) and blocks(6-2).

The Rattlers scored 50 points in the paint, 22 2nd chance points, and held a 50(21)-19(6) rebounding advantage over S. Georgia State. "Pure dominance, that's what we had tonight and it felt good," exclaimed Gabler with a hint of overconfidence.

The Rattler coaches did show signs of mercy, because with 9:57 to play they subbed out all starters and gave the subs a great chance to showcase their talents. "I glad someone in this world still coaches with sportsmanship. My hat goes off to Coach Dillard and his team," commented the South Georgia State coach.

An NCAA Christmas Visit

T'was 2 nights before christmas,
and all in bed sleep.
Especially the #1 team,
who the Dukies just beat.
The Dukies looked proud,
after their 1 point win.
While teams like Gonzaga,
stayed at number ten.
Where's Kentucky, and Rutgers,
don't see them at all.
I guess with NCAA b-ball,
some giants must fall.
But lets just stay happy,
for teams like Kent State,
UAB, and Samford,
along with Troy State.
NCAA b-ball,
What a wonderful sight,
Happy Christmas to all,
and to all a good night.

Merry Christmas Everyone!!!!

Barring #1 Michigan State, it seems to be a lot of 120mph, 5-speed, Nissan Altima, V6-type action in the Top 25. We've got (sr) Jack White and the 2007 National Champions, Colorado State Rams making a strong case for an early #1 ranking. Plus there are still a host of undeafeated teams in the Top 25 including, UAB, Kansas, Pepperdine, and the Golden Bears out West. So with all this winning and losing going on here this weeks C.P.U.'s:

Contenders

(so) guard, Jeremee Hayes and the Blazers continue to roll at 10-0

#13-ESPN/AP-(10-0) UAB Blazers

-Talk about hot!!! The Blazers seemed poised to engulf Conference USA with a fire that few can touch. They have won against a host of big schools including Alabama, UNC-Wilmington by 26, Tennessee by 27, and beat the Boilermakers in Indiana by 3. These guys look for real, because they are for real. Paced by great play by their breakout sophomore guard, Jeremee Hayes who leads the team in scoring with 11.3 ppg. But this kid doesn't just score he can also rebound and dish out the great assist and this is evident with his 4.7 apg average. Don't fall asleep trying to shut this guy down though, there are 3 other players on the UAB squad that average over 10ppg so anyone can bust out at anytime. Watch out Cincy, becuase these Blazers can burn you badly.

Pretenders

(jr) forward, R.J. McFarland averages 13.5ppg, 2.5 rpg, and 3.8 apg, but is it enough for Arizona to beat a top ranked team?

#14-ESPN/AP-(4-2) Arizona Wildcats

I guess when you are the Wildcats AND have 24-consecutive NCAA tournament appearances, anything less than perfection seems like a fall from greatness. But in all honesty this year, the 'Cats have had some problems. Though its still early, losses to #17 Chicago State, and #16 Oklahoma State might show a kink in that desert armor. Arizona is still passing the ball well( #2 in PAC-10 with 14.8 apg) but the normal team discipline(2nd to last in FPG-17.7) doesn't seem to be there. "We are still the team to beat in the PAC-10. Some of these young guys are still getting used to our work ethic here and I believe we'll turn it around before conference play," said (sr) guard, Brian Hubbard (great all-around player: 12.5ppg, 9.0 rpg, 2.3 apg, 3.3 spg, 1.2 bpg). I'm sure #12 California is thinking a little different.

Under the Radar

2005 Horizon Conf. Freshman of the Year now a senior: Steve Williams

(7-0) Univ. of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Panthers

You might ask, "......the Horizon Conference? What's that Div. II?" But do not go to sleep on this team. With a squad full of shooters, this team has the ability to upset some big names this year. Three years ago, (sr) guard, Steve Williams was the conference's freshman of the year. After 2 disappointing seasons, Williams seems back to form averaging over 13 ppg. Adding to Williams' prowess, is one of the biggest surprises of the year in (sr) point guard, Anthony Stevens. Stevens averaged just 4.8 ppg last year but elevated his game to mammoth proportions this year(12.9 ppg, 6.0 apg, 2.6 spg) and is arguably the best point guard in the nation. The only downfall of this powerful duo is proof. The only notable win so far is against Princeton, but stay tuned becuase I see forsee big things for this squad.
