I wrote an MLB Legacy last spring, (Baseball Legacy (http://www.espnvideogames.com/community/forums/viewtopic.php?t=14017)) and got feedback that was positive, so I decided to start a NCAA Legacy using my favorite team the Cincinnati Bearcats. I have only played March Madness in the past, so ESPN College Hoops will be new to me. I am going to write this Legacy as if it were written by a newspaper writer, using photos, headlines and game summaries/stats. I will be picking up the game tomorrow night, and will be playing the games, not simming them. Anyways, I guess I will start, enjoy... :D

2004-05 Cincinnati Bearcats Preview
Saturday October 16th, 2004
The Cincinnati Enquirer
After a long and crazy summer, the Cincinnati Bearcats are excited to get their season underway. With coach Bob Huggins getting a DUI in June and Tony Bobbitt leaving for the NBA not long after, the Cats were looking at this year to be a failure. But, with Huggins great history under his belt, he was able to but his troubles behind him and focus on the team. "This team has a great shot at the Confrence USA title", says Huggins. When asked who will be this years team to beat in the C-USA, he replied, "Definetly Memphis and Louisville." Huggins was also asked about any newcomers to the team that would be big parts in the team success. Huggins said, "Every player will have to contribute, since we are a 'bench' type team and are very deep. Although, I am liking Roy Bright." Bright averaged 19 points a game and 11 rebounds with the Mt. Zion Christian Academy last year and was a big addition for the Bearcats. Jihad Muhammad was also a big addition as he will be the teams starting point guard this year.
As for the roster and starters, here is a breakdown of the team and its stars.

The Bearcats have won 8 of the last 9 Confrence USA titles and with this being their final year in the C-USA (2005 they move to the Big East) they are one of the favorites to do it again, the others being Memphis and Louisville. Jason Maxiell the standout player on the Bearcats has a high chance of taking C-USA player of the year honors, he would join other Bearcats like Kenyon Martin and Nick Van Exel. Cincy is known to be a deep team and rely strongly on not only their starters but their deep bench. With three Freshman on the team this year and one starting, there is alot to be proven by this years squad. Asrangue Souleymane is a standout star from the Central Africian Republic, he is a 6 foot 8 beast that is very quick, compared to the NBA's Amare Stoudamire. He is only a freshman though and will have to adapt quickly to the other C-USA bigmen. Nick Williams, last year starting point guard is being moved over to the shooting spot to make room for newcomer Jihad Muhammed, the other new Bearcat who will start this season. With the C-USA 6th Man of the Year Tony Bobbitt gone to the Lakers, a new 6th man will have to step up for the Cats. Vincent Banks a freshman who shot 45% from three point range last year is the one who is most likely to take on the role. There are lots of questions to be answered this year and lots of ball to be played, the season is only a few weeks away.

Nice Job so far. As a huge Cincinnati fan myself, I feel the need to correct you on something. Jihad Muhammed is a Juco Transer, and a sophmore this year. He played at a Junior College last year, not High school.

Thanks, after doing even more research I found out he is actually a Junior, and played two seasons in Texas.

Oh, so hes a junior this year. That's good, hopefully he will give the bearcats some needed leadership on the floor. He struggled some in one preseason game, but he should be fine.
Go Cats! First game Friday Night vs. Valpo.

It clearly looks like the Bearcats can start the season 12-0, the Cats first tough game of the year looks like it will be when they host Illinois on New Years Eve in Vegas, although upsets can occur in the NCAA. A couple other games that the Bearcats have circled on their calender is the matchups against Louisville, Pitino and his Cardinals lead by star Francisco Garcia will be a handfull for Huggins. The Cats also are going to have their hands full when they play the Memphis Tigers later this year, the Tigers posted a 21-7 record last season and were the closest team the Cincinnati in the C-USA standings. DePaul and Charlotte are also big games for the Bearcats. Cincy will face Wake Forest in January, the Demon Deacons are #7 in the early polls and will just keep getting better with star Chris Paul running the frontcourt. The Bearcats will have alot of obsticles this year, and they need to pick up every win they can since their schedule is looking tough in the second half of the season.

The off-season was tough for me, and this helps in the healing process."

Bearcats Targeting on Washington

The Cincinnati Enquirer

Jacoby Washington, a power forward that plays for a high school in Oakland, California is on the radar for the Bearcats. Washington is one of the best forwards in America, and at 6'11" 233 pounds, Cincy is doing all they can to lure him in. With senior Jason Maxiell leaving the team after this season, there is a need for a power forward to fill his shoes. The Cincinnati Bearcats are suppose to be offering Washington a schlorship in the next few weeks, and sources have said he would love to come to Cincy, but is also looking at Stanford which is alot closer to his home.

Maxiell Prefers to Let Actions do the Talking
Tuesday November 30th, 2004
The Cincinnati Enquirer
http://www.enquirer.com/img/column_mugs/daugherty.jpg
Article By, Paul Daugherty
Enquirer Sports Writer
On campus star power forward Jason Maxiell is known as "Max", and in no way does it refer to his volume. If his nickname were based on his volume, he would be known as "Min." When asked about his minor hamstring injury he suffered against Purdue, he responded "It's Alright", when asked if he will be starting Saturday at Dayton, he replied, "Word" and when asked whats new in his life he simply said, "Not much." Max is a very quiet kid, but makes up for it on the court by showing his skill. Known around the school as being very mute, Maxiell did say he needs to work on becoming a verbal leader. Max is a standout senior and eye candy for NBA scouts everywhere. Coach Huggins talks about Max more than Max talks about himself. Huggins told us, when he is told to perform a play on the court, he simply gives a response of "Word." Jason Maxiell did have something to say though that is a little longer than "Word" or "Not much", he said his grandfather James Maxiell told him something when he was a kid he has never forgotten. "Don't say nothing, sit back, watch and listen. You learn a lot more without opening your mouth."

Cincy's Defense is Best in the C-USA
Wendesday December 8th, 2004
The Cincinnati Enquirer
The Bearcats have been great in their first four games, they have scored the ball well, passed well, and even made it to the free throw line more than most teams, but the one thing that stands out the most in the Cats 4-0 start in their defense. The Bearcats have only allowed their opponents to score 57.5 points a game, which is the best in the C-USA. They also are number one in the conference in steals, grabbing 17.5 a game, Louisville is second with 15.3 a game. Also, Cincinnati is third in the C-USA in blocks with 4.5 a game. As for the offense, the Cats are just as dominate, their 49.6 field goal percentage is the best in the C-USA, and their 80.3 points a game is second to Louisville.
The Bearcats roster has been great as well. Asrangue Souleymane, the new starting center for the Cats, leads the C-USA in steals a game with 3.2 and field goal percentage, posting an incredible 81.2%. He also grabs 3 offensive boards a game, second best in the conference. James White has averaged 15.2 points over the first four games, which is fifth best in the C-USA. The Bearcats are not known for having one or two dominate scorers, they move the ball around and rely greatly on their bench. Armein Kirkland is having a great season off the bench and is the leading candidate for the 6th man of the year award in the C-USA, which was won by Cincy's Tony Bobbitt last season.
With this effort both on the offensive and defensive sides of the court, the Bearcats should do well in the C-USA and be a contender in the NCAA tournament come March. Cincinnati's next test will be at the Shoemaker Center in Cincinnati, against a good team in Vanderbilt.

Bearcats Win Nail Bitter at Home, Improve to 5-0
"Cincinnati goes on a 16-4 run with 3:45 left in the game to win 80-74."
Friday December 10th, 2004
The Cincinnati Enquirer
The Bearcats still have a perfect record, but their fifth win didnt come easy. Down 64-70 with only 3 minutes and 45 seconds left in the game, the Bearcats put together a huge run to win the game. Armein Kirkland had two straight three pointers tying the game at 70, then James White put up six straight points leading the Bearcats on a 16-4 run, and eventually to the 80-74 win. The Vanderbilt Commodores were the biggest test faced by the Bearcats so far this season. "The guys played great, and we were fortunate to get the win", coach Huggins said after the game. James White led the team with 23 points and after the game was asked about his clutch shots late in the second half, "I just put them up, and they went down. It feels great to be 5-0." White was all smiles and so was Armein Kirkland, another big contributor late in the game. "Everyone showed great heart tonight, they played great when it counted most."

The Commodores shot nearly 50% from beyond the arch, as that was the reason the Cats fell behind and couldnt comeback for most of the game. Mario Moore, Vandy's shooting guard had 5 3's alone. The only reason Cincinnati didnt fall too far behind was because of how often they got sent to the free throw line. The Bearcats got 29 of their 80 points from the charity stripe, while Vanderbilt ony hit 14 free throws. Steals and fast break points also played a role in keeping the game in reach, the Cats forced 16 turnovers and were able to convert 32 points off the turnovers.

Out of the 14 teams in the C-USA, 13 teams have a record of .500 or above, including three teams still undefeated. Sure it is only four weeks into the season, but this conference is shaping up to be a very tough and competitve conference. Four teams in the C-USA are ranked, the highest being Louisville at #6, and the lowest being Charlotte at #23. With only a little over three weeks until conference games start, teams need to stay healthy, strong and win as many non-conference games as possible, because who knows what to expect in the C-USA.

Cincinnati Looking at Schwartz
Saturday December 11th, 2004
The Cincinnati Enquirer
With no new news from Jacoby Washington, the power forward from California, the Bearcats have turned their interest towards a shooting guard from nearby Council Bluffs, Iowa named Dyron Schwartz. The 6 foot 4, 198 pound high school senior has already said he would love to play in Cincy. "Its close to home, and I would love to be coached by the great Bob Huggins." Schwartz said. He is a 5-star athlete and was offered a scholorship two days ago from the Bearcats coaching staff. Dyron will be visiting the campus in a week, and Jacoby Washington, the Bearcats other prospect out of high school will be flying in for a campus visit tomorrow. He was offered a scholorship two weeks ago.
Detroit Gets Shell Shocked
"The Bearcats newcomer, Roy Bright, looked very bright dropping 19 points on the Titans."
Sunday December 12th, 2004
The Cincinnati Enquirer
Roy Bright, a member of the newcomers to the Bearcats ball club, had 19 points and 2 steals in a 87-54 defeat over the Detroit Titans. Bright scored his points off the bench, he was 6 for 8 from the field, hitting 3 three pointers and going 2 for 2 at the free throw line. His performance earned him player of the game honors, and some extra bonus points from coach Huggins. "Its great to see someone play as well as Roy did, and the fact that he is a freshman makes it all the better." James White also had a great game, scoring 15 points, grabbing 6 rebounds, getting 3 blocks and 5 assists.

Bearcats Top Jackson State for 8th Win
"Cincinnati started the game on a 23-4 run and never looked back."
Tuesday December 21st, 2004
The Cincinnati Enquirer
The starting five gave the Bearcats a 23-7 lead with 10 minutes left in the half and then rested until haltime. At the half the Cats were ahead 52-27. In the second half the starting five played for about 7 more minutes, and then once again sat down for the rest of the half. Of the 81 points scored by Cincinnati, 57 was scored by the bench. Roy Bright led all bench players scoring 22 points and going 10 for 10 from the field in 19 minutes.
The best highlight of the day came before the game though. A half hour before tip-off a few Bearcats had a dunk contest to earn some money for a nearby youth center and the dunk of the day had to be when James White bricked a one handed jam. "I didnt know if I show have tried again, or just sat down." James said after the event.

Cincinnati at Illinois Preview
The Cincinnati Enquirer
On Friday, New Years Eve, the Bearcats will face their first major test of the season when they play the Illinois Fighting Illini. The game will be played in Las Vegas, Nevada on national television. Illinois was the team that defeated Cincinnati 92-68 in March last year in the NCAA Tournament. The Bearcats come into the game 8 point underdogs and will have to play their best ball to compete with a team of Illinois strength. Heres a quick breakdown of tomorrow's game.

Cincinnati - 85.4
Illinois - 80.8

Leading Scorers
Cincinnati - James White, 14.8 PPG
Illinois - Deron Williams, 19.2 PPG
It seems Cincinnati has the advantage, having better stats in more catergories than Illinois, but the Fighting Illini have played harder teams so far in the year, while the Cats schedule has been quite easy. Illinois is a team known for their defense, and it is very hard to score against them, every shot Cincinnati makes will be well earned. Illinois is ranked 4th in the nation with a record of 10-1, while Cincinnati is ranked 8th and has a record of 12-0.

Interview With Coach Huggins
Wendesday January 5th, 2005
The Cincinnati Enquirer
Cincinnati Enquirer sports writer Paul Daugherty sat down Wendesday afternoon with Bearcat coach Bob Huggins on the UC campus to talk about his team halfway through the season.
http://www.enquirer.com/img/column_mugs/daugherty.jpg
Paul Daugherty
Enquirer Sports Writer
Here's how the conversation went...
Daugherty - So, here we are halfway through the season and your team has a 12-1 record and is #13 in the Nation. How do you feel going into C-USA play?
Huggins - So far so good, the Illinois game hurted, but what more can you ask for, we won 12 of our first 13. As for the C-USA, I think as long as we stay healthy and focused, we will be just fine.
Daugherty - Yeah, 12 out of 13 is pretty good. Some critics claim the Bearcats are overrated, they say Cincy has had a fairly weak schedule and should be lower in the rankings, do you feel the same?
Huggins - I am very proud of this team and disagree. The critics are just saying how they feel, and their job is to criticize. That's how they earn their checks.
Daugherty - Enough said coach. Now, I want to talk a little about Friday's loss to the Illini. Your thoughts?
Huggins - They simply outplayed us, they are a very strong team on both sides of the ball. I wouldnt be surprised if they make the final four or even win it all in March.
Daugherty - Injuries haven't hurt the team yet through the season, but Kirkland missed the Illinois game, will he be back for DePaul tomorrow?
Huggins - He will be back, he just had a sore ankle like Muhammad did a few games back. Although, Eric Hicks may miss the game, he has been fighting the flu all week.
Daugherty - Hopefully Hicks recovers well. That brings me to my next question, are you happy with the results Souleymane has given you at center? Many people were surprised you started him over Hicks.
Huggins - He has been great so far, especially for a freshman, he will just get better as time wares on. Hicks is better coming off the bench for us, he can play both the power forward and center position well, which is nice when Maxiell or Asrangue needs a rest or is in foul trouble.
Daugherty - I see, with conference play starting tomorrow what teams scare you most?
Huggins - Well of course Louisville, but I also see Memphis, DePaul, Charlotte and St. Louis as strong teams. The C-USA is a very tough conference, even UAB and Marquette are tough games.
Daugherty - Well coach, I thank you for your time, and hope you and the Cats the best of luck in the second half.
Huggins - Thanks Paul.

Cats Start Conference Play With a Win
"Cincinnati got the win in their first C-USA game last night over rival DePaul 76-72."

Jason Maxiell got fouled while making a lay-up and completed the three point play giving Cincy a 72-70 lead. The Bearcats then had a huge defensive stop and got a clutch jumpshot by Jihad Muhammad giving Cincinnati their first conference win.

Cincinnati Improves to 2-0 in C-USA
"White's 20 points helped lead the Bearcats to a 2-0 conference USA start."
Sunday January 9th, 2005
The Cincinnati Enquirer
The Bearcats improved to 14-1 and 2-0 in conference play Saturday after they defeated the St. Louis Billikens 80-66 in Missouri. James White led Cincinnati with 20 points and Nick Williams helped with 19. The first half of the game was a battle from behind the arch with St. Louis hitting 7 three pointers and Cincy hitting 6. But, things died down in the second half as the Cats fed the ball inside more, dominating the paint and eventually getting the win.

"Cincinnati grabbed 14 steals and was able to score 20 points off them, helping the Cats defeat the #7 Louisville Cardinals 73-63."
Sunday January 16th, 2005

Cincinnati, 11th in the nation, was able to hold on to the victory over the 7th ranked Louisville Cardinals last night 73-63 at the Shoemaker Center in Cincy. Nick Williams lead the team with 21 points and had 3 steals. James White also had a productive game, scoring 10 points, grabbing 8 rebounds and getting 5 assists. The Cardinals were the first ranked team the Cats defeated this season, they lost to #2 Illinois in December.

The score was close throughout the game, but the reason the Bearcats were able to pull away was because of their brillant defensive play. Cincinnati grabbed 14 steals while Louisville only had 4. The Cats also only gave up 5 turnovers and the Cardinals had 14, all were Cincy steals. With the win the Bearcats are 4-0 in conference games and 16-1 overall, they also should go up in the rankings after beating Louisville. "They beat us, thats all I can say. We had to many stupid turnovers." coach Pitino said after the game.

Coach Huggins says the team should be able to land Schwartz and Ricci, but may have a tough time getting Washington, who is really favoring Stanford. If Cincinnati cant get Washington, they have a back-up from overseas (France) who could join the team. With Maxiell leaving after the season, the Bearcats are in desperate need of bigmen. The Bearcats have a total of 4 scholarships to offer this year, they will be losing two starters, Jason Maxiell and Nick Williams.

Cincinnati is the favorite to win, but it should be a very good game. The key for a Bearcats victory, will be to stop Wake Forest's Chris Paul and Justin Gray who dominate the backcourt. The Bearcats average more steals a game than the Deacons, and have allowed less points to opponents, if they can stay in their average it should help in tomorrow's game. The Bearcats are 1-1 against ranked opponents, they lost to Illinois and defeated Louisville.

Vincent Banks scored 18 points off the bench, while Eric Hicks added another 10. Together the whole Bearcat bench had 48 points, about half the teams total points. With the win the Bearcats have won 19 of their first 20 games, thats a winning percentage of 95%. It should continue at least one more game as Cincinnati will face the Houston Cougars next, a team that is in the bottom half of the C-USA standings. After that the Cats have a tough game against Louisville at Freedom Hall.

It would be nice to have one player on your team to lead all NCAA teams in a single catergory, but to have two is incredible. Cincinnati has the NCAA leaders in both three pointers made, and steals per game. Muhammad has been great on defense all season, and with an average on three steals a game, coach Huggins is gifted to have him as his starting guard. Nick Williams barely edged out Kansas guard Aaron Miles in three's made, Williams has 62, Miles has 60. Williams and Muhammad are together, one of the most dangerous backcourts in the NCAA, they can shoot well, pass well and are both great on defense.

Awful, just awful. Those were the only words out of caoch Huggins mouth last night after a heartbreaking loss to Houston. Andre Owens, the Cougars senior guard scored 30 points on the Bearcats. Houston was ahead by 14 at one point in the game. "This was the first time I've seen so many fans leave early at one of our games." Muhammad said after the loss.

Houston dominated the glass, everytime they missed a shot, they got the offensive board and made the easy layup. Cincinnati also was in foul trouble all night, James White and Jihad Muhammad both sat most of the first half. The Cougar guards were just to much to handle. With defensive star Jihad Muhammad on the bench, point guard Andre Owens took the game over making buckets all over the court. Next up for the Cats is a trip to Freedom Hall to take on the #11 Louisville Cardinals.

Both teams matched up well and were fairly close in every department besides turnovers. The reason the Cats were able to pull away by so much was because of their consistant three point shooting. Cincinnati hit 17 three pointers while Charlotte only hit 8. On a side note, Jason Maxiell had yet another below average game. Over the last five games he has only been averaging about 7 points and 6 rebounds a game, when before that he was averaging about 13 points and 9 rebounds a game. "Things will turn around, he is just in a slump. You know, class finals are in a couple weeks, so he's probably just a little worn out." Coach Huggins said when asked about Jason.
