Dan Patrick: Our top story today, Malcolm Payton, former el Capitano of the Arkansas Razorbacks is rumored to be coming out of retirement after oh, 1 day. We are recieving word that Payton has called for a press conference at a coffeeshop in Guelph, Ontario, at which either he will announce who he will be coaching next or we will discover how much wood a woodchuck could chuck if a wood chuck could chuck wood. Lets go to the live footage...
MALCOLM PAYTON IS BACK
A friend (known as K Bomber): Ladies and gentleman, Malcolm Payton.
Malcolm Payton: Dear reporters, I know i have made all of you wonder with my actions over the past, erm, day. But i can say confidently that this is an announcement that will clearg the situation for a while. I have just signed a 3 year deal to become the headcoach of none other than the US Naval Academy. We will win the Patriot league this year, I guarantee it.

Roster:
Starters:
PG Kenneth Page #13
6'2 205 SR 57
Kenny Page is a good ball-handler,
an average passer, and a ball hawk on defense.
His J is reminescent of Tony Siragusa.
SG Thor Collum #5
6'5 230 JR 60
Thor is a good shooter with good size for a SG.
Him jumping? Think Siragusa.
SF CJ Platt #33
6'7 215 JR 59
CJ is a big body whose natural position is PF, and he shows it every time he puts the ball on the floor (once again, think Siragusa).
He has a good midrange J and is a decent rebounder.
PF Ed Boyette #44
6'6 215 SO 61
The most athletic player on the team, Ed is a highflying dunker who can block and rebound with the best of them.
He knows a few good low post moves, but is clueless in the strategy of defensive post playing.
C Ralph Zavackas #30
6'11 235 SO 56
What Talent? Ralph is big with the basketball skills of, you guessed it, Tony Siragusa.
In addition to being skilless, he is also unathletic. A two-for.
BENCH:
SG Chuck Minor #15
6'5 215 JR 57
C Glen Hall #55
6'6 240 SR 58
PF RJ Rushing #20
6'6 205 SR 55
SF Daon Brittian #42
6'4 205 JR 54
PF Freddie See #32
JR 6'6 235 53
SF Patrick Collison #23

SEASON OUTLOOK
Head Coach: Malcolm Payton-- Lifetime 38-4
Asst. Coachs: Tron Burrell (C)/Branden Mulligan (C)
Projected Finish in Patriot League: 8th of 8
Navy has practically no talent, size, or athleticism. However they have a good coach who has won a lot with a relatively similar situation in UC Riverside. They have a few players who could surprise us. Ed Boyette and Thor Collum, namely. Coach Payton was flown in at noon and met the team at 12:30. He spent 7 and a half hours with them, until gametime with Princeton, tonight at 8.

Pretender: #22 Alabama, fact is, they aren't that good.
Team we're going to spend to much time talking about: Navy. Thats right. You can't diss the Navy, but the fact is they just aren't talented enough to be moderately successful this year, as their exuberent and enigmatic coach Malcolm Payton insists they will be. We forsee a 20 loss season.[/i]

Conrad Wysocki roars in triumph after the final Thor Collum 3 pointer falls short.
The Princeton Tigers showed their tricky Ivy League intellect today with their victory over the Navy Midshipmen by the score of 40-37. Navy Coach Malcolm Payton said he was dissapointed in his teams output offensively as they were running up and down the floor as much as they possibly could. "We knew coming in that we couldn't outthink em or fool em with a motion offense, so we tried to push it up and not let them set up or even think things through, like when we ran the press." However, this aggressive style of play led to fouls galore, as the Midshipmen committed 11 fouls to the 3 committed by Princeton, and the Tigers made em pay, hitting 10-12 from the line, to only 2-4 from Navy.
In the first half the Navy showed boundless energy that would make their drillmasters proud. Captain Thor Collum led the squad into battle with 6 points 2 assists and 1 rebound in the 1st. Ed Boyette was an animal with 3 dunks, 7 rebounds and 2 steals to earn POTH honors. The nicest surprise of the half was Glenn Hall, who came off the bench to get more minutes than Zavackas thanks to his high energy rebounding defense and tipins.
At Half: 21-17 Navy
POTH: Ed Boyette 6 points 7 rebounds 2 steals
Key Players:
Thor Collum 6 pts 2 assists 1 rebound
CJ Platt 8 4 pts 2 assists
Glenn Hall 3 pts 2 blocks 3 boards
Key Stats:
PRINCE: 31.8% FG| 5-5 FT| 7-2 A-T Ratio|10 Rebounds
NAVY...: 47.6% FG| 1-2 FT| 5-4 A-T Ratio| 15 Rebounds
During the second half the Middies lead grew to 6, 2 minutes in. From then on in the Princeton Tigers put a stop on the Middie fast-break and destroyed the floppy Naval Defenses. They tied the game with 2:00, went ahead with 44 on the clock, and a split second later it was 40-37 Princeton, 8.3 to play. Thor Collum threw up a desperate three, missed and Navy Fouled. Princeton missed the FT, Navy the board, halfcourt TO. 1.2 to play, Inbound to Thor, spinning toss, BRICK! game over, Princeton takes it.
Final: 40-37
MOTG: Thor Collum 12 pts.
Key Players:
CJ Platt, 8 pts 4 assists 2 rebounds
Ed Boyette 8 pts 10 rebounds
Glenn Hall 5 pts 1 assist 3 blocks 6 boards
Key Stats:
PRINCE:10-12 FT|3 TO's|3 Fouls
NAVY...:3-4FT|8 TO's|11 Fouls

Katz View: You Sunk My Battleship
http://espn.go.com/i/columnists/katz_andy_fpo.gif
Malcolm Payton has no business in Annapolis
When Don Devoe announced his retirement in early February last year, he said of his decision to announce it in mid-season, "I've never quit on any team in my life, and I'm not quitting on this team as I will remain the head coach the rest of this season." Don Devoe was a class act who led the Midshipmen to 5 Patriot League titles in 12 years. Success and Class in equal doses. That is the kind of coach teams like Army, Navy, and Air Force needs. Its not about winning with these schools as much as it is to build character, as these young men will work as hard as anyone to preserve our freedom.
However, Chet Gladchuck miss-stepped in his mission to raise these boys. He hired Malcolm Payton. This 22 year old punk is a brilliant basketball mind, yes, but he is also a college dropout who has left 2 organizations in 7 months. Ethics? What Ethics? This kid left a program he built in one year to a fever pitch, a group of players who adored him, a public who had been enchanted by him and a court with his name on it, to go to a big bad power school, who he coached to what looked like a dominant beginning to a high-flying year, but a month into the season he was gone, faxing in his resignation from Guelph, Ontario. We thought he'd had a mental breakdown.
We thought he had health problems (he looked like a superannuated ferret). Nope, he just didn't want to coach at Arkansas, the "thrill was gone." Well the thrill is back! he came back the next day and announced he would be taking the job from a reasonably respectful man, Bill Lange. And that night against Princeton, his team played dumb basketball, losing a lead that should have been big enough to hold up, (6 with 6 to play) and played with the heart of their flip-flopping Coach, Malcolm Payton.
Coach Payton knows basketball, but i dont want this kind of man anywhere near the Naval Forces. He would be better off at a basketball school, where the players take "Geography" or "Addition" as their Majors. Or the NBA, I'm sure him and Ron Artest would get along real well.

Navy shows Heart in Payton's first Naval Win [/img]
CATONSVILLE MD- The Midshipmen showed tremendous heart, grit, and determination that we love to see in college basketball during their victory over University of Maryland-Baltimore County. The game was almost identical to their loss against Princeton, except Navy played the Princeton role. UMBC hada lead that they should've been able to use to put the game away (8 pts with 2:40 on the clock) Due to a turnup of the press and fastbreak, Navy managed to break that lead into peices, tying that game in 40 seconds, 42-42. With 37.7 to go, Navy took their first lead of their game. However, the tremendous SG Hobson of UMBC drilled the game tying J with 20 togo. 16.1 seconds and about a million screens later, Thor Collum took a fadeaway jumper from the corner with a 6'9 hand in his face............and Drills IT! The Retrievers inbounded the ball to halfcourt passed it to the elbow for a turnaround J, but Ed Boyette went Hakim Warrick on em blocking the ball out of the air and out of bounds as time expired. Thor Collum is a good mid-range shooter, and he made the retrievers pay with 18 pts. CJ Platt had 10 pts, Kenny Page 8 assists. The most incredible thing was Navy's A-TO ratio of 19-1. Navy has a day off now before they travel to the home of the flames, Maryland College.

FROM: Coach Payton < dungeonsanddragonsmaster@hotmail.net >
Subject: Recruit Nate Caporn
Dear Chet,
My staff and i have spent the last few days looking at a highschool senior in Scranton, Penn. His name is Nate Caporn. He is 6'10 and 213 pounds. We have spoken to his advisor and he has informed us that Nate is a good citizen, with average marks in his courses and a great work ethic.
On the basketball side of things, Nate is a steady center, a good rebounder who is surprisingly quick and athletic for his size. He holds good shooting touch inside 20 feet, and decent ball handling.
We've spoken to him numerous times, and we are assured he has no problem entering the military, and that Navy is his top choice. We would like to offer him a scholarship as he already has one on the table from Morgan State. We think he might accept during in-season signing week (Nov. 28th-Dec. 5th)
Best Regards,
Malcolm

considering this takes up about an hour of my day that i'd normally be wasting on television i dont think that im too obsessed, which is spelled that way, not upsessed, but thanks for the kind words anyway. And Penn State will never make a BCS bowl until Joe Paterno learns that hes over the hill and is just hurting the team he loves.
CincyFan-- Of course you can use some of these ideas. They aren't even mine. Prez or Bait or bomber came up with the idea of having an Andy Katz article, that was the 1st i ever did. The beauty of the Legacy community is that everybody shares ideas and tries to "1up" each other, which, like a capitalist economy, makes everybody better.

hey vandnbyriver i think u need to cut the kid some slack. u know he probably has NCAA college football and plays it all the time and probably uses penn state in there. So most likely they are really good. as of being obsessed, i would probably agree with him, but then again i am obsessed in everything i do, that is why i do everything so well and have an heckic life. i am not obsessed to the point where this runs my life or anything like that, but i do like the game and when i do play xbox now most of the time its that. then again i use to be a college bball player and a student of the game so i love college basketball and basketball games in general.

CincyFan u prolly right, i may have been a bit too vicious in reply to that, but i guess to obsessed is different depending on how you define obsessed, i always looked upon obsession as a bad thing, because i defined it as something that runs your life, in your definition of the word, yes, i guess i am obsessed.

AP WIRE--What a game for the Navy Midshipmen. This team has now won 2 games in a row by a grand total of...3 points. This one ended with yet another game winning shot by a certain Thor Collum. While his performance might stand out the most, with 22 points on the night, the real MVP for tonights game was Ed Boyette. Eddy had only four points and 3 rebounds in the 1st half. But he turned it around in the second half, finishing with 18 points and 11 rebounds. While these two players one the game for the Navy squad, one player kept Maryland College in it the whole game. Rashad Ely, a 6'5 SG who could do it all, dropped 28 points and 6 rebounds on Navy's collective head and destroyed Thor Collum with his drives, treys and pull up buckets. During the second half the Midshipmen actually put Ed Boyette on him, and later Glenn Hall. He couldnt be stopped however and almost led his team to victory.
In the first half Navy discovered something it hadnt seen in its first two games. Against Princeton it was like this....
NAVY: Lets Run Lets Run!!!!! YAAY
Princeton: I think not my dear boys, let us run our princeton offense and cut behind you for easy buckets, oh yes, oh yes. Buckets...
Against UMBC...
NAVY: RUNNING! JUMPING! DUNKING! YAY! YAY!
UMBC: No, lets reconsider, alright well, lets play a slow and tedious halfcourt game and force you to hit jumpers. oh yes, that sounds fun.
But in tonights game it was more like:
NAVY: YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY RUNNING JUMPING SLAM DUUUUUUUNK!!!!!
Maryland College: Sounds good, give the ball to Rashad Ely, we will see how it goes.
In the second half Navy again trailed by 8 with 3 to play. Ed Boyette exploded for 4 straight fast break buckets and 2 steals to make it 58-57. With 44.9 to play Collum missed an open J to ice the game, the score at 60-57. Then they pushed it up the floor and Rashad Ely picked up another bucket. Then we called TO and brought in our best FT shooter, Daon Brittian. We inbound it to him several times and then for some reason he turns and shoots before they can foul him the seventh time, he clanks it, and they push it up the floor, Long ball by Ely for the lead, Brick, Brittian redeems himself with the rebound. Then he is fouled, 11.1 on the clock and Daon, ranked 80 on FT, misses!!! He clanks it! They push it up to Halfcourt call the Timeout. And then with 6.5 to play, inbound it to Ely, With and impossible fadeaway fro mthe corner he takes the lead. 61-60. 1.5 seconds on the clock. I toss it all the way past HC to Hall and call TO. dont lose any time, still 1.5. I bring Collum back in. We inbound it to him on the wing, a step in side the 3 point arc he spins and fires with Rashad Ely in his face and, GOOOOOOOOOD!!!!!!!!!!!
Collums hits it for the win, we win 62-61!!!!!

Linda Cohen: I'm sure Ron Artest will be missed on the floor for the Pacers. Anyway, moving on to some college basketball highlights we have the suddenly newsworthy Navy Midshipmen, (Raucous cheer from soldiers, one goes to get the rest of the Naval squadron.) We pick it up here in the first minute of the game. What you're seeing is Navy Shooting Guard Thor Collum setting his team up with a 6-0 lead, on 3 assists from the God of Thunder himself. As you can see Alumni Hall is absolutely lovin it. Navy outran the Virginia Military Institute throughout the first half, but were only up five at the break....
(On the screen:)
At Half: Navy 21 VMI 16
POTH: Thor Collum 10 pts 3 assists 1 steal 2 rebounds
Key Players:
CJ Platt 6 pts
Glenn Hall 3pts 4 rebounds
Key Stat:
VMI: 6-0 2nd Chance points
NAVY: 0 Turnovers
Now we skip ahead to 3:15 left, cuz we have that power. 31-30, VMI having climbed back from a 6 point hole, and the shot clock down to 2, Navy playing great D, but the crafty PG Diaz finds Norton for 3 at the buzzer, completely uncovered, good! Skip ahead to f40 left on the clock Navy up 39-7 and VMI begins to foul intentionally. Seven seconds of game clock later, Daon Brittian, supposedly the best FT shooter that Navy has, clanks the front end of the one and one. VMI gets the ball to HC and calls a TO. 29 to play. They work it around, looking for the good shot, and Norton fires a 3, no good, but he gets his own rebound and goes up, but so does Glenn Hall (Hall Swats ball back to the 3 pt Line, Crazy "woo"ing from Navy) PG Diaz grabs it and feeds it into the big man McFarland, Boyette playing D on him, he plays tough D, forces the miss and grabs the board, They foul him, he hits both ends of the one and one, and thats ball game. Navy Wins (Ship's crew arrive just intime to hear last two words, go crazy celebrating) Here are your final Stats:
Final Score: 41-37

Preview to the Battle for Caporn
Nate Caporn, a six foot 10 inch potential pro from Scranton, PA, is a hot recruit for small northeastern schools. His top 5 schools: Morgan State, Navy, Manhatten, Hofstra and Penn. Not exactly the Big 12 is it? Nate's dedication to receive a good education is clear in his choice of schools. The top 2 schools on his list have offered him full scholarships. Morgan State, and the Navy Midshipmen. Right now reports have him leaning slightly towards Morgan State at the moment, although nothing will be for certain until he sends that letter of intent. This Dec. 1st meeting of the two top teams (in Annapolis) is said to be the Battle for Caporn, as whoever wins will probably have the edge in signing him this offseason or even during the signing week, which ends on Dec. 5th.

Morgan State (1-2) @ Navy (3-1)
In the Battle for Caporn the Navy Midshipmen again showed their determination in yet another last second win. As they headed to half, announcer Jay Bilas said that, with to evenly talented (or untalented) teams playing, it would come down to who executed and played tougher when they were tired. An educated viewer knew which team that favored.
Malcolm Payton, after the game, when asked how he felt about his team: he flashed a smile and said,"Gotta plane to catch." Tron Burrell cleared it up saying that Payton was flying the short flight to Scranton, Penn, to talk to his Prize Recruit, Nate Caporn. Payton felt it was necessary to schedule a visit directly after the game regardless of whether they won or lost. If they won, it would be to tell Nate how he was a better coach than Morgan State's Clinton Works. If he lost? Burrell grimaced and said "Damage Control."
During the first half the only thing shown by the horribleness that was this game was how gloriously inept Ralph Zavackas really is. He missed critical rebounds, allowing a 6'5 power forward to grab em over him, missed layups, and left his man open under the basket numerous times for no real reason. It was only by the will of Thor Collum that Navy was still in it at half.
At Half: Morgan State: 23 Navy: 17
POTH: Thor Collum 13 points
Key Players: NONE
Key Stat: Assist to Turnover Ratio
Morgan State: 11-4 Navy 4-5
With 4:36 left CJ Platt gave the Middies their first lead since Thor Collum drained a 3 on the opening possession. 36-35. Jubilation from the Alumni Hall faithful was short-lived however, as one man, namely SR SG Deon Gai, shot energy into the Morgan State attack and with 2:50 to play, it was 42-38. With 1:10 to play it was 46-41 and Thor Collum hit a 3 ball. Can you say TURNING POINT! Glenn Hall continued his spiffy work on defense with a steal, thats right, spiffy. He outletted it to Collum for a Layup. 32 to play. 46 all. Gai gets it to HC and calls timeout, taking 3 seconds. DAAAA Bears wound the clock down to twelve before Gai fired up a long shot. No good, and Glenn Hall has the rebound! He calls TO. Coach Payton draws up a play on his Clipboard. Morgan State sets up their trap, which has been reaking Havoc for the entire game. Kenny Page just runs to an open corner of HC and CJ Platt guns him the ball. Kenny catches it and throws it to a wide open Glenn Hall. I mean WIDE OPEN, nobody inside the 3pt line. He throws it down with the authority of a white land-owning male in Colonial America. 8.7 to play. The bears push it to HC and set up a shot for SR forward Joe Perry, 3pter, they know the tides have turned and they wont win if they go to OT, so they go for the win. No Good, ballgame over. Navy Wins.
Final Score: 48-46

ATHENS, OH-- Our Ohio Bobcats took on a much less talented Navy team in the Convo last night, and lost woefully. Navy is a team with little talent, less size, and a ton of heart. They came from behind in the 2nd half and held off a late charge by the Bobs to win, 51-46. Navy's Thor Collum has continued to make his case for the top player in Navy's Patriot League, with 18 points and 3 assists on the night. But what was really impressive was the way Navy swung the ball around the perimeter to beat Ohio's lackluster 2-3 zone. Kenny Page, Chuck Minor, Thor Collum, and CJ Platt swung the ball around and into the post so well that we saw Glenn Hall dump in an uncharacteristic 13 pts. Navy Coach Malcolm Payton on the game, "I was very impressed with our effort tonight against a very good team. Ohio has skills and athleticism and will be a force in the MAC. I am excited about this win, but i cannot get to excited, because after tomorrow's day off, we've got Belmont and Seton Hall back to back, and i don't like the sound of that."
In the 1st half Coach Payton decided to push the ball up the floor, press all the time, and most importantly, keep Thor Collum out of the game 60% of the time so he could be fresh down the stretch and hit the big shots when they needed him to. Mission Accomplished. Thanks to Ed "Go Big" Boyette and Glenn "Tank" Hall Navy was down one at the intermission.

Thor Collum 5 pts
CJ Platt 4 pts

In the second point the turning point was when RJ Rushing grabbed a rebound after a great defense possession that forced a shot clock expiring three pointer, and tossing it to HC where Thor "Thunder God" Collum caught it, took 3 dribbles into a layup, was fouled, and hit the 1, making it 38-34 Navy in the lead. Free Throws and Missed 3's later it was final, 51-46

23 year-old CJ Platt, who spent 2 years
on a Mormon mission in Eastern Europe
returned to lead his team to victory
You didnt think it would happen did you? Navy winning without a great effort from Thor "Thunder God" Collum? Impossible, as Vizzini would say "Inconceivable". But they did. Navy defeated Belmont 53-47 in the Curb Events Center. They went out there, sucked it up and won, despite Thor missing his first 5 shots before exiting the game with a bruised hand. He will play tomorrow vs. Seton Hall.[/i]
At the half this game wasnt close, Belmont leading 33-17. I lost the stats for it, but Platt had no points, nor did Patrick Collison.
In the second they came roaring back, led by Platt's 10, Collison's 10 and Platt's 8 fierce rebounds. The game was capped when Glenn Hall grabbed a desperation shot by Chuck Minor and slammed it, getting fouled and hitting the FT in the process, with 4 seconds to play. I lost all the stats and notes but Platt had 10 and 8 boards and Collison had 10 points, all u need to know

Navy Loses to Seton Hall by 10
Navy 5-1 Vs. Seton Hall 4-0
Navy Coach Malcolm Payton on the performance of his team today: "We needed to play two perfect halves of basketball today, and we got about 1 and a half. You can't win them all, but i was very impressed with our effort today. We have a while to think about what we did right and what we did wrong, but I'm spending the next three days on planes visiting recruits. Please talk to my assistants if you want more information. "
Navy needed energy to make this close, and energy they got, as they blocked the first two shots from the shellshocked Pirates, and though they committed 8 team fouls, (Thor Collum, Kenny Page and Glenn Hall all had 2) lost the battle for 2nd Chance points (4-0) and FB points (6-0), and were flat out beaten physically, they stayed in the game, trailing by two.

Upset at the Mount?
Mount St. Mary's, a small school in Emmittsburg Maryland, where basketball was unimportant forever. Until the Bone. Major Bone took control of this depressing team and led them to the elite eigtht last season, but with the departure of many of their stars, they had stumbled to a 2-5 start this season. However with JR Guard Anthony Booker and the rest of the Mountaineers primed for an upset, a great game was in the making.
Background for Navy: Coming off a long stretch where they went 13 days without a game, and with Minnesota in a few days, Navy could have easily been either rusty or looking past the mount.
Or Both.
They certainly didnt look rusty in the 1st half of this game, as they opened with a solid 22-12 lead with 3 to go. However, Coach Payton's team fell asleep at the wheel in the lsat 3 minutes of the half, turning the ball over and finishing the half with a two point edge...

Navy continued to snooze throughout the second half and with 2:44 to go, they were down 7, 49-42. Coach Payton called a TO and Kenny "Straight A" Page responded to something Payton did or said.
"He threatened to burn my thesis," said a grinning Page after the game, "I worked hard on that thing, and he was going to take a lighter to it. I guess it got me going."
It certainly did, as Kenny pressed up and down the floor, forcing TO after TO and generally giving the Mountaineers hell. 42.3 seconds to go? 51-51. Skip ahead, 5.0 to go, ball at HC and game tied 51 all. Collum takes the ball and a long J, no good. Overtime on the Mount.

Malcolm succeeds at doing what Murray cannot?
The movie Caddyshack is well-known for a variety of reasons, one Bill Murray's hilarious battles with the Gopher. Malcolm Payton said he thought his team had a chance to succeed where Murray had not. "We have a couple kids who can play and teamwise we are very determined and tough. If we can keep them off the boards, this might look like a life-sized version of wack-a-mole."
In reality, it was more like, mmm, "Wack-a-Midshipmen", but as that doesnt flow and is somewhat unpatriotic, "The Great Domination" will be used from here on in.
During "The Great Domination" Minnesota opened up 10-2 before Thor Collum called a TO on court and, pushing Malcolm Payton out of the huddle, screamed at his players. 2 minutes later it was 16-11. Close at it ever got. They devoured Glenn Hall, who, despite the heart of a lion and the athleticism of a lion with bad chaffing, was unable to stop the big bad Big 10 team. Ralph Zavackas was heard mumbling in dazed Serbian after the Gopher's center dunked a ball on his head and when hitting the ground yelled in his face, "BOOM!".

Navy beats an athletic Citadel Ballclub
Navy's Thor Collum drops 26 pts in another victory for this overachieving Navy squad
With a 60-54 victory over the Citadel yesterday the Navy Midshipmen went to an impressive 8-3 on the year, though as Coach Payton said after the game, these wins aren't to big. "We should think of these non-conference games as pre-season, training for the big show almost. It's nice to make our record look neat with 8 non-conference victories, but thats not wat college hoops is about, we need a win over Lafayette before I say anything else. Air Force, being another srrvice institution, would be another nice win, but Lafayette is where most of my energy is going."
In the first half the Midshipmen were smoking, at one point up eleven. But, thanks to a nice little collapse at the end of the first half, they were up only 5 at break

Navy jumpshoots Air Force into submission, 66-47
http://www.navysports.com/uploads/images/Mergerson11103C.jpg
Glenn Hall had a nice day in
the upset victory over Air Force
Air Force was considered a major favorite coming into their game with military rival Navy. They were 5-4 coming off a tough non-conference schedule and Navy had lost the only two games they had played against quality opponents (and Princeton). Air Force was more talented. Air Force was bigger. Air Force was Stronger.
It didn't matter.
Sometimes everything just works for you. This was one of those days for the Midshipmen. They made 5-6 from 3pt land, forced 14 turnovers, and committed only 6 of their own. "That was not a coaching victory, or a solid victory that came from good gameplanning and tough talent. That was the kind of victory that comes from hitting on all cylinders, getting all the rolls, and coming to play on defense. All credit must go to the players, and the rims, for getting us a big win."
The First half of the game saw Kenny Page, Chuck Minor, and Thor Collum doubling the ball on a peculiar variety of 2-3 zone. "We thought that Kim McCrosky (SO PG) though he was averaging 7 points a game, was not a true point guard since his numbers (2.2 apg, 1.8 topg) were not impressive, and downright poor for a starting PG in the A-T ratio section. We pressured him, and came up big, as i think he committed 5-6 turnovers himself."
At Half: 30-22

Kenny Page scored 9 pts in the
1st conference game of the year
Many thought that, after an impressive showing against Air Force on Monday, Navy basketball had turned a corner. Maybe they would spend all their games making shots and stealing passes. Maybe they'd storm through the Patriot League with an undefeated and unchallenged record. Maybe they'd send 7 players to the pro's (after their tour of duty). Maybe they'd be cutting down the nets in March.
Maybe not.
Maybe the Navy basketball team would return to the fray. Maybe they would not be able to stop Lafayette if they had Ben Wallace at C. Maybe they won only because of the sharp-shooting of a junior and the conditioning, toughness and heart that only Army could possibly rival. Maybe, though, Navy is 10-3...
From the opening tip to the final buzzer Navy never stopped running, and Malcolm Payton loved it. "It was beautiful. It lacked the luck of our win over Air Force, and the defensive toughness of our wins against the early season opponents, but it was entertaining basketball and I loved it."

Thor Collum preparing to get one of his 25 from the line
January 12th, 2005
(ANNAPOLIS, MD)-Navy triumphed again in their biggest win of the season by playing a brilliant second half, outscoring the Eagles by 20 in the 12 minute period. Navy will take a few days off before the Lehigh Mountain Hawks bring their 8-6 record to Annapolis on the 15th.
In the 1st half Navy showed that they had come to play, though they made a few dumb plays that allowed American to stay in the game. All in all, Navy played well. Coach Malcolm Payton on his team's effort in the 1st half, "There's one thing I've always gotten from these players, and that's effort. We made a few too many turnovers and missed a few box-outs on the defensive glass, but we fought and fought, which allowed us to pull through."

POTH: Thor Collum 10 pts 2 assists
Key Players:
Chuck Minor 6 pts 1 ast 2 rebounds
CJ Platt 4 pts 2 assists 3 rebounds

The second half was the best basketball Navy played all year. They played tough D, alternating between 3-2, man to man, and 2-3 to confuse the Eagles, made FT's, ran the break to perfection, and still got devoured on the opponent's offensive boards. However, about four minutes in it was already 42-26 and subs were coming in to finish off the game. A battered American squad couldn't even keep pace with them as the game finished with Navy subs holding the lead near 30.

Freddie "What Can I" See!!!
http://www.navysports.com/uploads/images/Fannin_Matt06.jpg
Underachieving F puts up double double in Conference Win
When Thor doesn't contribute, Navy is as good as dead, right? What about when Thor leaves the game with a broken finger midway through the 1st half, scoring only 8 pts? According to the game vs. Lehigh, they win thanks to an unheralded Junior Forward who was getting no time watsoever.
Freddie See, who had yet to score more than 4 pts in a game this season broke out for 17 pts and 10 rebounds in Navy's win over the Mountainhawks. He scored mostly on put-backs from his many offensive rebounds. Coach Payton on his new phenom, "Freddie has always been a tough kid, and works hard every day in practice. He's smart, and though only 6'6", know's how to play in the post. He will be in the rotation from now on."
Freddie's hard work on the glass was the thing that probably won the game for Navy more than his scoring. He found a man and boxed him out, every time, and when he didn't get the rebound, he'd still done his job since his man didnt get it. The result was Navy outrebounding the Mountainhawks 37-25.
Special Thanks to Derek Souchu of Lehigh who, normally a very good shooter from the perimeter and the line, clunked 4 of eight FT's in the game, including two which would have tied the game with 2.7 to play.
Navy is now 12-3 (3-0) and Lehigh has become a still respectable 8-7 (1-2). Navy will play host to Columbia this Monday the 17th. Columbia is an Ivy League club who is off to a fast 8-3 (0-1) with wins over Patriot Leaguers Army, Lafayette, and Lehigh. Their Conference loss came today vs. Cornell 63-56 at home.
Final Score: 66-64

Around two months ago, Malcolm Payton resigned from his post at Arkansas to take the vacant one at Navy. Many viewed this as a horrible decision by AD Chet Gladchuck. It was like hiring Michael Jackson as a baby sitter or Dubyah as a Speech Coach. An irresponsible 22 year-old shaping the lives of our service men and women? Madness. No way it would work. It wasn't feasible. They would be bad, and they'd be bad kids as well.
No coach can turn around a team with a 6'6 starting C. The Zen Master? Would've taken a rain check. We called Jerry Sloan. He was teaching John Stockton and Johnny's new roomate at the retirement home, Phil Rizzutto, on the pick n roll. Pat Riley? He said something about needing Alonzo Mourning. John Wooden. You can't make fun of John Wooden. Lenny Wilkins couldn't do it because apparently he's going for the record for most games won while appearing to have replaced your hair with clouds. Coach K? Wouldn't return my phone calls. (Which means I couldn't come up with a joke for him). Bobby Knight? Right, because Navy needs a worse role-model for their players. Dean Smith? Deano is currently protesting the shot-clock and is not into coaching.
What about some former players? They could reach into the minds of the Navy kids and learn how to motivate them. Isiah Thomas? Apparently he has to be in charge of player personnel decisions for at least two years before he takes a job. Michael Jordan? Come on, have you watched Washington in the past few years. Dennis Rodman? Charles Barkley? I dont think i need to explain those two.
I think the only guy who the Naval Academy could've hired that would have seemed like a worse idea than Malcolm Payton is a guy who suddenly has a lot of time. Ron Artest. That's Ron Artest, who would like you to buy his new production by his first find., Allure. Ronny is, how to say, a moron. Apparently moron is sanskrit for "Good Basketball Coach". So why not give him a chance. In fact, why not elect him president, it might work out.
In all seriousness however, Malcolm Payton has done a stellar job as head coach of Navy. He knows his stuff. And the astounding part: The Kids LOVE Him. "He's a solid basketball mind. He is a great teacher, and he makes great Tomato Soup," said Navy captain Thor Collum. "He is...very good...coach...Sir." Said Serbian C Ralph Zavackas. "He was a great coach and an even better Madonna Impersonator." Says Coach Tripplett, current coach of Arkansas and last year Big West 6th man of the year under Payton, referring to a karaoke party the coach had performed "Like A Virgin" and "Funky Town".
So I guess Coach Payton wasnt a bad choice for coach. On behalf of the press, I would like to apologize for scrutinizing this move so harshly.

"The single most amazing comeback I have ever seen."

Navy put up probably the oddest win this season, beating Columbia in OT by 20! Navy trailed by as much as 14 pts in the second half but came roaring back thanks to the revitalization of Thor Collum. He turned it around in the final minutes and exploded in OT to help them beat a demoralized Columbia squad.
In the first half Navy played boring, uninspired basketball, not moving the ball or making open shots. Only a buzzer beater by Thor Collum kept them within a point of the lead at the half.
At Half: 29-28
POTH: Thor Collum 7 pts 2 steals (3-10 shooting)
Key Players:
Kenny Page 5 pts
Glenn Hall 4 pts 3 rebs
Key Stats:
Navy:
Rebounds 9
A-T Ratio 5-4
Bench Pts 12

Columbia:
Rebounds 14
A-T Ratio 12-5
Bench Pts: 4
FB Points: 0
With eight minutes to go Columbia had put up a 13-0 run to take a 42-30 lead. A minute and a half later however, inspired by a Thor-less lineup including RJ Rushing and Chuck Minor, Navy ran off eight straight. Here's a Timeline...
1:40 58-52 Navy playing great but Columbia just keeps hitting shots
29.2 62-59 They keep hitting 1-1's and i keep hitting layups, finally take initiative
24.9 They hit another 1-1 Collum 3pter good
13.0 Thor hits another 3 after another 1-1. 68-67. Double Bonus for Columbia
3.6 Columbia hits the FT's/ Collum drives, kickout, gets ball back, fires a three, rims in!!!! 70-70
Long toss no good OT
In the overtime period however, Navy used a 5 guard lineup to outrun everybody on the floor, and ran off the first 16 pts. Game not interesting anymore.
Final: 94-74
POTG: Thor Collum 37 pts 3 steals 2 asts
Key Players:
Chuck Minor 14 pts 6 assists
CJ Platt 12 pts 4 asts
Monte John 2 pts 5 rebounds in 5 minutes
Key Stat:
9-18 from 3pt Land for the Middies

13-3 (3-0)<> 7-9 (2-1)
Navy started out today's game vs. Holy Cross playing ok basketball, but having a surprisingly horrible shooting day considering the amount of good shooters they consistently had on the floor. The new starting lineup got outrebounded a bit, but the fact that they are all offensive weapons made up for it, as they went into the half leading by 5 without having caught fire for any amount of time.
At Half: 28-23
POTH: Thor Collum 10 pts
Key Players:
Chuck Minor 8 pts 2 steals
CJ Platt 4 pts 23 steals 4 rebounds
Key Stats:

Starting off the half Holy Cross came out and, not through any spectacular effort on their part, ran off 13 straight. Malcolm Payton called TO and huddled his beleagured troops. They seemed to regain the shooting touch afterward to run off 8 straight, tying it at 36. Then HC went on a 4 pt mini-run, followed by a 10-0 Run by the Middies, making it 46-40 with 2:10 to play and effectively ending the game.
The difference in the second stanza would have to be RJ Rushing. His determined effort (Most likely caused by a desire to keep a starting job) to grab rebounds and hit jumpers turned the game around for Navy. "We could have easily lost that game thanks to those runs by Holy Cross. He got us started after 13-0 by playing an aggressive wing when we turned to the 3-2, and hit a few big J's when we needed it to stop the 4 pt mini run."
Final Score: 52-44
POTG: RJ Rushing 14 pts 6 rebounds
Key Players:
Thor Collum 14 pts 3 assists 2 steals
Chuck Minor 8 pts 2 asts 3 steals
CJ Platt 6 pts 8 boards

WEST POINT, NY-Ahh, Army Navy at West Point, does it get any better than this? True, it would be a little fiercer if it were football, but its still a great rivalry. Army is coming off a season where they had 11, yes 11, freshman on the squad. Navy is having a great season under new coach Malcolm Payton. Both teams however, consider themselves to be the underdog.
"We still consider ourselves the underdogs," Said Payton, "Remember, we were picked to finish last in the Conference."
"He said they were the underdogs?!?!?! We're 5-9 they're 14-3, I'd say we aren't favored here!!!" Said exasperated Army Coach Dell Walls.
Navy continued to play ok with the new starting lineup. They got outrebounded a little, but the fastbreak was there and it more than made up for it.

In the second half however, it was a slightly different story. Led by great perimeter shooting by Chuck Minor and Thor Collum, Navy burried Army, after falling behind early in the half.
