The Texas Southern Athletic Director, Maximus Wallace, gave a news conference about the hiring of the new Basketball coach, Gary George, for their struggling team in the past. There was rumors that this guy is hands down a great bench coach, but they were unsure if he was good enough or even ready to take over a school's program. Only time will tell of what Coach George's track record will be like.

(News Conference...from earlier today)

Reporter 1: Since they hired you as athletic director, was it a decision to hire an unknown coach cause you are an unknown athletic director?

Max. Wallace: Umm...me unknown. Well it sure seems like it that you know me, so I must not be that unknown. (laughter in room) Seriously thought it somewhat had a part to do with it, but not a big part. Coming off of a 6-18 season last year and being in a small conference, and getting a new athletic director there is not really that much attraction for a big name coach or even a well name coach to want to take over this job. I am not saying that Coach George won't be, or is a good coach, but he is just someone who is unknown to you reporters. Other coaches known how good he is.

Reporter 2: If you proclaim he is so good and everything that didn't he go after the opening for the mid-majors schools openings, and secondly his last coaching job he was mostly in there for recruiting players and not really involved with the players?

Max. Wallace: I can assure you he will do the job just fine. Yes they gave a report on Coach George (Overall C+, Off. C-, Def. C-, Teach B+, Recruit B+, Scout C+) but he does have a way with the kids and he knows how to talk to them and get his point across. But I can't give you the reasons why really so I will turn over the podium to Gary George to answer the rest of the questions.

G. George: To answer your first question, I decided to start small and build my way up. These are the teams that are made out of character and that you can schedule the big boys, and if they are not ready for us we can steal away a win from some big teams. For your second question at the last coaching job i had the head coach didn't want us to interfer with the players cause he had a strick way of coaching, but even though he was like that we still had 2 successful seasons under him. When a player did have a problem out of basketball or wanted to talk about the mental part of the game or watch tapes, I was the one they came too so I do know what I am doing.

Reporter 1: So are you saying that this is just a stepping stone for you until a better job comes around?

G. George: Well I am not saying I am going to leave if I have a very successful first year. But I am not ruling out that I will stay forever. I will mostly stay here for a few seasons, unless a school that I would like to coach for would offer me a job, then I would probably leave for it, and they're only about 5 teams out of the whole nation I would coach for.

Reporter 3: Which 5 would that be?

G. George: Well I won't say, but if I leave then you will know that it is one of the five I would like to coach for. Sorry to cut this short but since we only a game later on tonight I need to be with my team and get them mentally prepared. Thank you all for coming out and supporting me and this team. I will say we will get to the NCAA tourney this year.[/b]

Scouting Report:
Team having 2 PG's and PF's starting. NO true C on team. Have some big guys on the team but don't have the muscle to bang inside. This team is a run-and-gun type of team, that only has 1 player (PG 75 in three's) in the 70's for shooting three's, but have 3 high 60's for three-pointers. If this team gets out rebound and is cold on a shooting night it will be a blow out (especially playing five top 5 teams). It will come down to lots of Zone for Texas Southern on D, and mostly long range and tyring to drawl fouls when they are on O. This might be a rocky season for them, but there is only way they can go and that is Up after this season.

TEXAS SOUTHERN VS BROWN

Brown came out firing out from the gates and Coach George's team was anything but frozen. Brown jumped out to a 14-3 early lead until Texas Southern to try a different defense instead of man to man. They found the D that would slow them down a little as they switched from a 2-3 zone and a 2-3 matchup zone. "They had they same defense for about 10 to 12 plays straight, but everytime it was different from a matchup zone to straight up zone and my team didn't read it good enough, and force some turnovers from us", replied Fred Cortez, Browns Coach. Texas Southern closed out the half on a 10-1 run, but was still down at half 33-20. It wasn't until after half when Marion Ray found his shot (2/8, 1/5 3's in the first half) connecting on his next 6 for 8 shots, and 3 of them were from long range. "Lil' Ray Ray was huge for our team..." replied Coach George," The smallest man on our team and the court that game standing at 5'10" came away with 28 points, 3 assists, 2 steals, and 4 huge late rebounds for us in the game." Coach George was very impressed of the second half of his team and how they started to actually stick with there game plan. "We are very outmatched for every game this year. We have two natural PG's starting for us and one is a freshman. We have two PF's starting also as one is playing for center. We are always going to be hurting for size, but what we have to play to our strenghts and that is to take the ball strong to the hole to draw the foul, and to hit the long ball." preached Gary George before the game. The second half was all about getting the the foul line (32 times in the game, hittin 20 of them) and hitting 5 three's but out of 15 attempts. Coach George said that they need to be calm when looking for the 3 and not jacking them up all of a sudden. Texas Southern Pulled out a 69-61 Win against Brown in the opening tournment they are in and next game they face against #14 Lousville.

Key Players:
TEXAS SOUTHERN

Texas Southern vs. Louisville game goes to OT

Both teams came out firing from the beginning. Texas Southern hitting there first 7 shots while Louisville only hit 3 shots out of 5, but went to the foul line 4 times sinking 3. Half way through the first half, Texas Southern had the lead by a thread, leading 38-35. Rest of the half, the teams started to get a little tired, but only a small dip in shooting as going into half Louisville had the lead 51-50. Coach George talked to the reporters at half saying, "after shooting over 60% from the field and making 10 out of 12 three pointers it would seem on paper that we would be in the lead. Apparently our team is more worried about offense than defense. I know they are a well better team and we need to be more on the offensive side, but I doubt we will be this good at shooting for the rest of the game. It would be nice but most likely won't happen..." In the second half he was right. TXSO came out ice cold only shooting 0 for 2 from three's and then only scoring 20 points in the half, on 3-16 shooting, to end the game at 70-70. First OT it looked like Louisville was playing at their potential as they hit there first 2 shots, and making a three point play with the foul shot. But Texas Southern wouldn't do down without a fight as they claw'd there way back and down by 3 with just 4 seconds, Lil' Ray Ray hit the 3 off of the screen to send it to double overtime at 82-82. Second overtime was bucket for bucket, big defensive stop after another, and ending with the score of 96-96. Sending the game into the third overtime it looked like Texas Southern was going to pull off the upset over #14 Louisville with 1:05 left and TXSO up 107-101. But as the number in front of Louisville was to show that they are that good came back to tie it on with a long jumper with .7 seconds left to send it into a fourth overtime. This time Lil' Ray Ray had enough as he became the go to man and made 4 out of the 6 baskets of TXSO as UL could only watch as they lost the game in the fourth OT with the final score 120-116. "I am just so proud of my team right now for how they started off the game shooting wise, went into half losing on such a good effort shooting, came back out in the second half couldn't really shoot the ball but turned it up a notch, maybe two on defense to send the game in overtime. I was shocked that we sent it in to four overtimes, and even came out with the win. This is a BIG, huge win for us. Because the next 6 or so games are all against top 25 teams and we can hopefully carry this win over to the next couple of games. If not anything it gave our team condifance and showed them that we can compete with anyone in the NCAA", Coach Gary George said after the game. Laying down in the dressing room talking to the reporters with his eyes close, was the dead tired Marion Ray who played 27 minutes out of the 34 total minutes,"Personally I really don't know how I made those buckets at the end, my body was shot and I couldn't hardly move. I am just glad we came out with the win cause if we didn't I think our team would of been crushed for the rest of the season. Pretty much like UL right now."

Texas Southern takes on Top Dog Connecticut

It sure was a battle for the Tigers as the Huskies came out blazen again against this pathetic looking defense by Texas Southern. UConn connected on there first 9 shots from the field before finally missing one. Then again most of there shots were from inside 10 feet. They ended the first half shooting 21 from 37 from the field. Texas Southern went to its bread and butter shot the three pointer, but it wasn't as effected as last game (10 for 12 last game) but has shot for a 6 for 15, making half of its shots in the game off of three's. Tigers are still in this as the score at half trailing Uconn 54-49. At intermission Coach Gary George said,"I knew this was going to happened. We were in sink last game for three's from the two man game and actually running thru our offense to actually get wide open shots. Now since our team has confidence its just pulling three's, shot after shot and it sorta got us in a hole right now. Then again there 13 foul shots to our 2 doesn't help out a lot either. But most of it is coming from just jacking up three's before running thru our offense. The only thing keeping us in this game is our rebounding right now as we hold the edge with 20-12. Eight of them are from the offensive side and put backs, mostly from three's so if we just calm down and relax I don't think we will have a problem coming back and hopefully upsetting UConn. I know they came in thinking this was a cake game and they overlooked us, but with the streak we have had, and how we been playing as a team I think has caught them off guard." The only other thing that has hurt this TXSO team is UConn's press of a 1-2-1-1 as this is hte first time they have seen a full court press and haven't adjusted well turning the ball over 7 times in the first half. And as the Tigers went away from the three so did the game. The closest TXSO got to UConn was 3 points and then it seemed that UConn woke up from the dream and realized that they might lose and then they started to play and then cruised to an easy win of 94-73. Only did TXSO take only 4 three's in the second half but they connected on 3 of them. Coach George after the game spoke and said, "Personally it was impressive that we hung with the number 1 team that long. We were always there knocking on the door, but we just didn't have the common sense to break it down. I don't blame the kids, I blame myself. I told them at half, actually I sort of lost my composure in the locker room about shooting all those three's and I think I scared some of the kids at half to stop shooting the three. I don't mind taking three pointers as long as it is a good shot, and when we do run out offense correctly we always have an open man for three and we usually drain it. I will take full responsablitly of this lost." After the game we met up with the leader of the team Marion Ray about the lost, and this was his response, "...so coach said that he will take the blame. ha thats funny actually no one has to take the blame. I will come out and say I am actually glad we lost that game, and I'm not worried about this lost. Heck I probably won't lose any sleep over it." Why asked about being happy about the lost to UConn and if they won they would of beat the number one team in the nation. "...they can be number 1 and that is fine. Remember this is just the season, but I promise you that they won't be number 1 come march. Hey I'm not saying we will win it all, but I know they won't. About not being sad cause of the lost, I am just happy we lost so now we don't have all that pressure of going undefeated. Now we can just cruise the way through with just 1 loss on the season and have no pressure about going whatever and 1. Now with that one loss we got the monkey off our back and now can go back to winning. No sweat bro, I know what this team can do."

Key Players

good stuff, man, way to play UConn tough. How long are ur halves? and do u play with any slider adjustmants or anything? Good luck with that tough as nails non conference schedule. If u win a few, thats some serious RPI right there.

i play on 14 min halfs, and on all-conference i believe...whatever the default level is but one higher. the sliders i left the same and didn't mess with any of the options except for the level and time. the game against UConn i thought i would lose by a ton which is did, but i was impressed that i stuck with them in the first half. I spend more time on in game options thought than i do playing the game mostly. I keep changing offensive and defensive plays like every 6 or 7 plays, and then my players matchups change always. but it seems that everytime i play the computer always does a one pass then shoot, so the PG gets like 15-20 assists per game though. thanks River, but i think i have a lot of loses coming up with a couple of other big schools i have to play against. I do have like 4 SO's who are reshirted who are really good, but i wanted to wait til next season to use them and too see how good my underclass men are.

Texas Southern Takes on #6 Kentucky

In the first half it was looking good as the leader for TXSO came up big play after play for the first 4 minutes on both sides of the ball. Then came the problems. Griffin (C), Strong (PF), and Lil' Ray Ray (PG) all got 2 fouls on them after only playing 5 minutes in the first half and had to come out of the game leading 14-5. After those starters came out, UK found the open spots on the floor, and then began to dominate every other aspect of the game as they went on a 28-6 run. With just under 2 minutes left and UK up on TXSO by 19, Coach George had to stop the bleeding so he put back in his starters and tried to stop the beating. It worked as Ray Ray came through again, picking up 4 fouls, but all were taking the charge that took away 8 easy points for UK. TXSO went on a 10-1 run to end the half trialing 52-42. This time TXSO has looked for there 3 pointers and found some wide open shots from deep, but shooting 4 for 6 in the first half from behind the arc. The player at half was given to Cecil Taft of UK. Scoring 19 points, 1 assist, and 3 rebounds. But the real player of the half right now is back to Texas Southern's Lil Ray Ray. The little guy with the guy heart and strong back from carrying his team has put up impressive numbers so far in this game with 8 points, 2 assists, 3 rebounds, and has taken 4 charges in only 6 minutes of play in the first half. Coach Gary George said,"... that no matter how many fouls Ray gets he is going to stay in the whole half because he is our leader and has shown that the last couple of games. Without him we seemed lost on the court and don't play to our potential."

The second half the Tigers came out blazing has then worked the inside game for the first couple of trips down and then started passing out as the Wildcats started to double down low giving TXSO 2 wide open three's and knocked them down. With just a little under 8 minutes left the game was tied, and then TXSO changed up this game plan. "We decided that we were going to play smart basketball and control the game cause of that, and I think we caught UK off guard. There pressure was killing us in the beginning and when we got the lead back we decided to make them play our game and I think it worked out." Coach George responded. The score went back in forth for the last 7 minutes as the end of the game the score was deadlock at 85-85. Back in Overtime it looked like the Tigers were ready and were in shape has they beat down the ball inside and drew foul after foul, pulling ahead in overtime to the score of 93-89.

Key Players:
TEXAS SOUTHERN
Marion Ray 37 points, 5 assists, 2 blocks, 4 rebounds, 5 charges taken
Keith Douby 27 points, 2 steals, 2 rebounds
Dominic Griffin 10 points, 3 assists, 1 steal, 1 block, 5 rebounds

Press Conference

Reporter 1: You are out matched every game on paper mostly, and you have played 3 ranked teams in 4 games. You just finished the game against Kentucky, and now the next day you have Syracuse who is ranked 5th, and Wake Forest who is ranked 15th. How does it feel playing probably the hardest schedule and starting out the year going 3-1.

Gary George: I was suprised of the schedule we have, and I am very suprised of our record right now. We still have to play smart basketball and even 2 of those wins we went in overtime. I am very proud of my team and how they are playing this year.

Reporter 2: Do you feel confident that this team can succeed with the upcoming schedule, and what changes to our game plan when you have a night that you have a off night from shooting 3's?

Gary George: I guess you really don't watch our games. Every game our game plan changes. Not that its different plays or anything, but from half to half we change defensive looks, to the different tempo we play. Last game we only took 9 three pointers and made 6 of them. I know one gmae we had like close to 20 three's attempted. It just depends on what defense the other team is playing and who is the hot hand for us. Usually it is Ray and he has come up big this year for us.

Reporter 3: Marion Ray has been huge for you this year, but don't you think you are putting on too much pressure for the smallest guy on your team?

Gary George: Well he might be the smallest guy by height, but on the court he is one of the biggest. He plays like a 6'4" or so shooting guard or SF. For the pressure bit, well I don't think he has that much pressure to begin with. The only pressure he is getting is from the reporters with questions like these. Basically the only thing we want Ray to do is to bring up the ball and look for the open man. But in the off-season he was upset for only getting 3 mins. in last year so he has been working on his game. He wants to be involved in every play, he wants to do all the dirty work, and he wants to win. There is really no pressure from our (coaches) standpoint, but the only true pressure he has is losing.

Reporter 1: Rumors have it that you will be leaving this school after this year to go on to bigger and better things? Is there any truth behind this?

Gary George: I can't really comment of school's wanting to hire me, but I will say none have contacted me yet, and since just starting at this school I would like to be here for awhile. Lastly I would like to say that we have been on a roll this year but going 3-1 doesn't mean anything. What happens if it was a fluke and we lose the rest then everyone will be asking why did we hire this guy as our coach and everything. Right now we are taking one game at a time, and thats all we can do since every game we are predicted to lose. Well thank you for coming out, and I will answer more questions, but now we have to prepared for the next game against Syracuse.

I usually do a good job, Louisville was like 0-8 for three's so i can stop the outside shot, its just low post i can't stop.

Texas Southern plays another top 5 team in Syracuse

15-6 run to end the first half. 2 points from the star player. 0 foul shots compared to 12. 21-14 in rebounding. That is what is hurting Texas Southern in the first half of the ballgame. Syracuse goes into half with a 46-37 lead. Marion Ray only has 2 points to go along with 2 fouls that made him sit out 12 of the 14 minutes of the first half. A 15-6 run Syracuse went on to end the half to build up a bigger lead. Syracuse outrebounded Texas Southern 21-14. Last Syracuse went to the foul line 12 times to TXSO 0. "Game is actually in our favor at half", proclaimed Coach George. "When our scoring is on the bench for basically the whole quarter and we have to people already in the teens for points and one is a bench player you know we have something going for us. Just think what the second half will have in store for us with Ray Ray back in" said George. Dreike Avery who is the senior backup PG to Ray (Lost starting job from him last year) has caught on fire this game scoring 13 points, bock, 2 rebounds, and 2 assists so far in this game. "It doesn't bother me that I am not starting this year, Ray has done a great job and carried this team. I am just glad I can step in for him and play as well as I am." Syracuse coach Errick Noel "we played well the first half but we had lapses in the game where we let them come back on us. we need to close down the lane and we need to stop the pick and roll. I can't tell you how many points they have gotten from that but its more than should be allowed" Again TXSO is down at half to another ranked team. Could it be like before and they come back and win. The next 14 minutes will show us how big TXSO hearts are and how strong they are from the overtime game last night.

The game ends and again Marion Ray was player of the game, as the Tigers were able to pull out another win against a top ranked team. This time there was no overtime as the final score was 100-95. Even though the score was high it really was about 85-80 really, but Syracuse started to foul in the end to hopefully come back, but the Tigers were flawless from the line going a 15-15 in the last two minutes for foul shooting. Ray had 12 of the foul shots and help jumped him to be the top scorer of the league. The Tigers were 9 for 14 for three pointers while the Orangemen were 4 for 9. Even though SU shot .571 from the field they still lost. "This was huge, we made the adjustment at half to come out and start 3 PG's on the floor which all are decent shooters from the outside, and with that the pick and roll was very successful. Not only that, but we turned it to a pick and roll then a kickout for a three since we had our shooters in. I am very proud of my team finishing this one up in the last two minutes when we had to be clutch for shooting foul shots" said the cheerful Gary George after the game.

Key Players:
TEXAS SOUTHERN
Marion Ray 36 points, 5 assists, 2 blocks, 4 rebounds
Keith Douby 35 points, 1 assist, 3 rebounds
Dreiki Avery 23 points, 2 assists, 1 block, and 2 rebounds

SYRACUSE
Gerrod Sampson 36 points, 10 assists, 1 steal, 2 rebounds

Texas Southern vs #13 Wake Forest

Texas Southern known for its fast pace game, decided to take a break from running up and down the floor as they changed it up to taking there time and just pounding it down low. And they did that and Wake Forest was all thrown off by it. Within the first 3 minutes there was 12 fouls in the game, 9 of them coming from WF. They even tried to take away the three game from TXSO which they did but then again TXSO only shot 2 of 3 three-pointers. With early foul trouble Wake Forest had to sub out some starters and TXSO just ate them alive down low. At half TXSO Tigers are up 45-36. TXSO also shot .640 from the field as they were 16/25 with those 2/3 for three-pointers.

The Tigers came out ice cold as they lost the lead, and the game 87-76. What also didn't help was Ray again getting in foul trouble and had to sit out half the game. This game was different as the WF clamped down on Ray and held him under 20 points this game. To help lead the comeback was senior SG Alton Swanson hitting 7 three's in the game and ended up with 43 points. "Three straight games against top 25 team's is rought. I am disappointed in the lost, but was impressed on how they carried themselves at the end of the game. All we can do is just rest up, go over tape and learn that we still need to finish out strong when we have a commanding lead." said Coach George. The one bright spot for the Tigers was there starting SG, Sergio John (freshman), and is truly a PG. Only averaging 6 points a game and a rebound, came in and dominated on the Tigers side as he had 13 points in the second half alone.

Texas Southern visits #22 Cincinnati

Cincinnati, OH "In this business, there is just two words, win and loss. Tonight we got the W. It wasn't a work of art, but in the end, we'll take it and run with it, while hopefully learning something from this experience. When I was an Assistant Coach, one of my bosses told me that you'll win 25% of your games no matter what you do, you'll lose 25% no matter what you do and that it's what you do with the other 50% that will define your legacy in this game. I think tonight we cashed in on that first 25%, so we will just leave it at that." remarked Coach George. For most of the game the Tigers could not find the hoop only 2 players stepped up to take on the challange. One was Keith Douby who had 19 points, and then the team cap. Marion Ray who ended the night with 27. Cincinnati on the other hand was able to make shots with ease, but turnovers and rebounds made them lose the game.

Key Players:
TEXAS SOUTHERN
Marion Ray 27 points, 7 assists, 1 block, 3 rebounds

Ann Arbor, MI This game was over before it was started. Michigan went on a 6-0 run to start the game and never looked back until the final buzzer winning 90-67. No one on the Tigers team could score from anywhere on the floor. They were ice cold from three point range going 4/16, bricking hard off of 7 wide open three's. "Some days you are going to have games like this. When you can't shoot it from outside you have to take it into the basket. Well appartently that didn't work either." said a disbelief Coach Gary George. Where his team shoot the lowest all season with 20/73 from the field making it .273%. "Your not going to win any games if you shoot that low, I don't care who you play against", responded Coach George. Texas Southern (5-3) plays last ranked team in #25 Kansas (4-2)

Lawrence, KS The last ranked team Texas Southern will face this season is Kansas. After playing all there game on the road (9 total), and having 8 of them being ranked teams it is good to finally stop playing the big boys, but its not over for the road trip yet as they still have the first couple conference games on the road. And the Tigers fans are tired of waiting so they are making there way cross the states to see them take on KU. And wasn't it worth the money as TXSO came out on top of a big battle that was won by rebounding. Final score was 60-54 in another not so good shooting performance, but Kansas wasn't any better and also got beat on the boards 37-26. Either team had a player score over 10 points, which can be good or bad from either side you look at it. Lil Ray Ray had 6 points at half, until he got in foul trouble once again and had to sit most of the second half, but came back in with 4 minutes left to hit a big 3 to take the lead by 1, and on a couple of possessions later got his fifth and final foul.

well we sorta hit a snag in the legacy mode. one my my bros' friends came over last night to spend the night and they were watching me play. they wanted to play so we all played on the same team. (i advise that if u do play with mult. people on your legacy to up the diffcuilt, or change the sliders cause its like lot easier to play with other people) so i didn't get to write the 3 games that we played together, but we were averaging like 90+ points a game and had like triple the amount of rebounds of the other team. of couse they scored easier since we have more user players so they didn't play correctly in the zone and man, but trans. and rebounding we played with ease. so they played the rest of my games (thinking it would only be a couple), but htey played the rest of my games in the legacy all the way too the offseason so now i am already over with the current year. not mad at them, actually happy cause now i have my starters who i reshirted last year back so that is good, but now i can't write the rest of the season though.

Team Scouting:
Last year Texas Southern was the best team in the league posting a 29-5 record. Even after losing team capt. Marion Ray they have upgraded at every position for there starters. They actually have people in the correct positions this year to start, even though the oldest starter is only a sophomore (everyone except for the Center who is a Freshman). Yes they are a better team than last year, but will the lack of leardership and playing time make this a worst season than last year? Even though they have a great starting lineup this year than past year, they don't have a bench at all. If they get in foul trouble like last year this will def. hurt this young team.

PRESS CONFERENCE:

Reporter 1: Even though you do have better starters than last year, do you think it is wise to sit the older classmen and let the young guys start? Secondly will you go to your bench a lot like you did last year, even when your best is worst than last year?

Gary George: Well our team capt. this year is a soph. so I don't think we have to rely on age. Its all about how well you can play this game, and the younger guys are better at it right now than our upper classmen. As to the second part I will have no doubts or worries if I have to go to my bench. If you remember we have two people on the bench last year who started for us, and they held up on their own.

Reporter 2: Again another year with a tough schedule. Since this is your second year why not go for the easier schedule?

Gary George: Well it wasn't really my doing this time around either. I talked to the kids and wanted to get a feel for who they wanted to play against and they said they wanted to play against the top dogs, so we went out and contacted schools around the nation to see if they would play us. Last year we were unknown and everyone thought we would be a cake win, but after the first couple of games everyone saw we were the real deal.

Reporter 1: Since you did play against big schools at the beginning u lost in the second round of the tournment though. Was it because you didn't have that hard competition at the end of the year?

Gary George: Umm...I don't think it was cause of the schedule at the beginning. I think it helped our kids understand how it is to play the big teams, but remember when tournment time comes everyone is hungry and everyone has a chance. I think our kids were star-stuck when they made it to the big dance, and wavier a little under the pressure but that was my fault for not preparing them as well as we should of been. This year though all the kids know what it is like to go there, and they are really hungry this year.

Reporter 3: Again on the scedule you have UConn. Last year they blew you out, and they are also number 1 once again in preseason polls. Are you afraid you are going to have the same faith as last year?

Gary George: Afraid? First of all do you think if we were afraid to play them we would schedule them. Yes they are back at number 1, but again I will say that this is season and not the end of the year. Remember me saying this last year and what happen, Florida won it all. All I can say this year is that UConn or Florida are not going to win it.

Reporter 2: Are you saying your team will win it?

Gary George: (laughing) No. No. I'm not saying that. It would be nice, but I will say is that we are going to get past the second round this year. This kids worked super hard in the offseason and I think it is going to show this year.

Texas Southern 78 - Birm.-Southern 52

Dayton, Oh The game started out close, due to the lack of experience by the starting 5 of the Tigers. Their pace was off a little, and was a little rocky before they got settled in. BSC out rebounded the Tigers 7 to 1 for the first 5 minutes of play to keep the score at 14-7 for BSC. After the Tigers came together it was over, as they changed up there defensive look every time down, and even threw in some press to throw out BSC and ran out the quarter on a 13-2 run to lead at half 33-22. Tigers are known for shooting three's in a game, but have calmed down now only shooting 3 for 6. The difference in this game so far are turnovers. While BSC has committed 8, TXSO has only committed 1.

Player of the Half:
SF Michael Gary (SO) 14 points, 1 assist, 2 steals

Well after half the Tigers shot 100 percent from behind the arc. Then again they only took 1 three-pointer in the second half. As there was no need to take long distances shots as they closed the door on the BSC to come away with an easy win. The starters for TXSO came out with 7 minutes left and watched as the bench went on a 13-0 run to really close out the deal. "I was a little worried at the beginning of the game cause our team wasn't clicking, but it was just the first game and they proved to me that they will never give up. The whole team too, not just the starters, but the bench people too. The bench came thru and scored 23 points for us this game", as Coach George was happy after the first win.

Texas Southern (1-0) 90- Mississippi St. (1-0) 66

Cincinnati, OH Not even the Mississippi Bulldogs could slow down this Tigers offense. It got so bad in the first half that with 4 minutes left, Coach George decided to sit his starters for the second half when the score was 46-13. Again the bench came in huge with the last 4 minutes scoring 12 points to end the half with a 58-28 lead. Both teams are 2 for 3 for three-pointers in the first half, but the man keys here are turnovers and rebounds. The Tigers out rebounded the Bulldogs 22-10, and had 7 steals compared to the Bulldogs 1. This game was ugly from the beginning and lets see how they do coming back out after half. Last thing that has helped out the Tigers with a big win so far is the 6 offensive rebounds they have and the 12 points from those rebounds. Which has help them jump out to this early lead while scoring 36 points from in the paint.

Player of the Half:
SF Michael Gary (SO) 15 points, 2 assists, 1 rebound

The starters were still on the bench as the second half started. Not only did some of the starters come back in the last 5 minutes to give the bench people a break, but the team capt. Michael Gary didn't even play at all the second half. Still it wasn't a problem as the Bulldogs never got closer than 20 points. "They just dominated the inside the whole night, and when they brought in their bench still the same thing. We were not ready to play tonight and I give credit this is a very powerful team" by the words of the Bulldogs coach.

Call THEM the "Cuisinarts", Tigers Slice and Dice Bulldogs

With time, anticipations can change, and what once seemed fantastic, might comparably appear as the mundane. Entering this year, the expectations for the Texas Southern Tigers were modest at best. With a galley of unproven players, and some key athletes from last year graduating (Lil' Ray Ray, remember him), what could legitimately be expected from this team? Much of the potential for success, it would seem, resided with how well the available talent could be molded into a cohesive unit by the coaching staff. however, as this season of Tigers Basketball has unfolded, it has become apparent that this team's coaching staff has been up to the challenge. This has never been more apparent than yesterday's 90-66 thrashing of the Mississippi State Bulldogs, in as one sided a game as you'll ever see in College Hoops.

NEWS CONFERENCE

Reporter: You won big the last two games, but both teams weren't really that cool, do you think that this upcoming game against Syracuse will be the same affect last year in the tournment when you haven't played a lot of good teams then play one and lose?

Gary George: We only look at one game. The next game is Syracuse and the last time I checked there has been no one to contain us from shooting. Yes we have a young class but do you think we won't be prepared for this game. I will say that the last two season tournments we were in we won, and we had to play some stiff competition in those.

Reporter: Since you already have Syracuse on the schedule for a non-conference game and now you have to play them in this tournment, how do you feel about your chances of winning both games.

Gary George: Well everyone said we would have a 50/50 season with this young group, but we are coming together and playing as a great team. I don't see us losing anytime soon. Unless we just fall apart and don't play our game.

Reporter: What type is your game, since you use different offesives every game or so, and you change up your Defense like every series?

Gary George: Well the tempo we run is mostly the run and gun. We have a lot of quick guys on our team, and most of our bench are guards. I would like us to run it up and down the whole game to make the other team tired, since we do have a deep bench for guards. But other than that yes we do change up our looks, but we spend a lot of time in practicing learning these plays and being mentally prepared.

Reporter: About your bench, it is the bench and most people you have on it are seniors. Question is how much can you trust from your bench when they would be on the JV team for other schools?

Gary George: Remember some were starters last year for our team. They know how it is to play a tough team. Plus if you say its our bench could only play JV for other schools, well I guess the last two games we played against are horrible since our bench was in for most of the game.

Reporter: Are your kids on the hype about all the buzz about your team? And do you think you will crack the top 25 in this season unlike last year?

Gary George: Well we can't really hide the hype from the kids cause they see it in the paper, their friends talk about it, or they see it on ESPN.. By the way I would like the thank ESPN for giving us good reviews this season. I think they like the hype, but its a challange more than a pick-me-up. Last, hopefully we can crack the top 25 this year.

Reporter: Good luck with game today against #8 Syracuse.

Gary George: Thank you, but we don't need luck. We just need to play our game. Thats all.

Cincinnati, OH This first half was filled with plently of action. Nine different lead changes, and six tie ball game for the first 13 minutes of play. With Syracuse going on a 20-6 run before half to take the lead 47-41. Texas Southern (4-0) 90 New Mexico St. (2-0) 66

Dayton, OH The Tigers take on one of the best PG's in the nation as they enter the first round in, Urban Coaches Invitational, to take on Keith Abbott and his New Mexico St. team. Abbott showed why he is ranked up there as he hit the first 4 out of 7 three-pointers he took, to take an early 22-7 lead. But the Tigers would back down as they took the ball inside ( 1 for 6 for three-pointers for TXSO). As they passed it downlow they were too big for New Mexico St. as they had to foul and got the Tigers back into the game. Tigers regained the lead and held it to half, 49-43.

Player of the Half:
PG Warren Bryant (SO) 17 points, 3 assists, 3 steals, 1 rebound

After half it actually looked like the Tigers were finally ready to stop the Aggies as they ended the game on a 33-4 run and ran away with a big win. This was the first time all season that every starter for the Tigers were in double figure for points. Shutting down the offense was easy for the Tigers as when they shut down Abbott there went all their points. First time in last 2 seasons that the Tigers didn't have the most 3 pointers attempted or made in a game than their opp.

Texas Southern (6-0) 82 Oregon (3-0) 50

For the Championship game and you have a 90 Overall team (Oregon) playing against a 79 Overall team (Texas Southern), you would blow out by half. Especially when Oregon is 3-0 on the year and been winning by 35 a night. Well half time it is and the score is 59-33, which is a blow out, but its Texas Southern in the lead. The fast breaks by the Tigers has caught the Ducks offguard and had to sit 3 starters early in the game for foul trouble.

Player at the Half:
SG Adam Ryan (SO) 20 points, 2 assists, 1 block, 2 rebounds

Again they cruise in the second half as 2 Duck players foul out with 8 minutes left. The bench of the Tigers mostly played the whole half only to come out when they were tired. It looks like the Tigers are going to be a tough team to beat this year.

Reporter 1: Your team has won the first 7 games of the year, which was both tournments you were in. The last 3 games though you won by 20 or more points. How successful do you think your team can do this year, and how is your team feeling right now.

Gary George: Well last year we went 29-5. This year we play pretty much the same schedule, and we have a better roster than last year. Even though some spots are hurting us right now. Right now our team is great, we are all healty and we are just on for the ride right now. There is no pressure though, since we are not even ranked yet and since we had a simular schedule last year its not a big thing right now. Just one game at a time.

Reporter 2: What spots are hurting you on your team?

Gary George: Well we shouldn't say, but any good coach who can look at a tape can tell real easy. Every team we play this year has a good coach, so I guess I can talk about it. First off we aren't a very strong rebounding team on the offensive glass. Our team is full of shooters so they believe every shot they take is going in, and with all the open looks I would believe so too, but that isn't the case. Secondly is our size. We lack in it. Its pretty bad when your SG is taller than your SF, and your PG is under 6'. I mean Michael Gary is one of the best if not the best player so far I have coached on this team and he is a 6'1" 180 pound SF. We don't get in faces on defense to cause off balance shots, and we are weak blocking cause of that. Offensively there is one thing that hurts us. That is the ability to be ice-cold for a couple of minutes where we can't hit a bucket if our lives depended on it.

Reporter 3: How does it feel to beat California who was unranked and undefeated, at the time, but after the new polls came out they are ranked #14 and your team is still unranked that week after beating them and #4 Syacuse. Next week after you beat 2 teams that had a combine record of 7-0 in the tournment and winning each game by at least 20 points, still no love for the polls?

Gary George: Its not a big deal to me actually. I am upset that we aren't ranked cause that is how I feel when we play so good and start off the year 7-0. But its not a big deal, right now we are just looking at our next game which is against the new #4 Florida Gators. Not even looking ahead or at there record, which I know cause I been looking at the tape of how they play and they are 1-0.

Reporter 2: Florida won it all last year, do you think if you do beat them you have a chance to win it all this year?

Gary George: (laughing) Well I do think we have a chance to beat them. I believe we have a chance to beat every team in the NCAA on a good day. Florida is a very strong team with most of there starters from last year, but remember, come March its anyone's game and its all about hunger. Now they are a really tough team, but I believe we will play on a good day so we can come out with the win.

Reporter 1: Do you believe Connecticut will win it all this year. They are ranked #1 this year, and they lost to Florida last year?

Gary George: Last year is last year. This year its anyone's game. We do have to play Connecticut this year, and to say it now before someone asks a question about it. Yes we lost to them last year, pretty bad, do we have a chance this year? Like I said last year they wouldn't win it all, and they didn't. I also said they won't beat us next year. Well when the time comes I will still say "they won't beat us."

Reporter 3: Do you believe you can be ranked this year?

Gary George: Well we did fairly well last year against the ranked teams. This year we been on a hot roll lately so right now we are playing like a top 25 team. Personally I don't care if we are ranked, but I think if we can win against this ranked teams we should be up there.

Texas Southern (7-0) 96 @ #4 Florida (2-0) 94
11/23

Miami, OH The first half was a dog fight and Florida goes in half with just 3 points separating them from Texas Southern 45-42. In the first half we saw 42 miss shots from the field and 17 fouls between both teams. As it took out 3 starters from each team for foul trouble.

Player at the Half:
PF Chris Harper (SO) 14 points, 2 assists, 1 steal, 2 blocks, 5 rebounds

“Warren Bryant and Adam Ryan had 3 fouls within the first minute of the second half. Usually players come out if they are out in foul trouble. We needed them on the court especially down by 7. Keeping them in was the best thing that happened.” Coach George said. As all was good down the stretched when they took the lead at 2:05 left in the half. Warren Bryant who had 4 fouls was still in at the end when they had to foul and sank 6/7 from the line in the last minute of play.

Texas Southern (8-0) @ Syracuse (2-1)
11/24

After winning in the first match up when Syracuse was ranked number 4, Texas Southern came out with a close win, 89-79. Of course Texas Southern went on to play 5 more games and blowing people out while Syracuse had a whole 2 ½ weeks before their next game, that’s right this one. Thinking Syracuse was going to be prepared and trying to get back in the top 25, after losing to lowly unranked Tigers in the tournament they would be ready. What happens you might ask. How about taking out all our starters with 4:48 left in half cause u are up by 31. Heck you even go into half with a 28 point lead, 59-31, cause the Orangemen’s PG hit a full court basket. That’s right, Syracuse is not winning this game it is the read hot Tigers, and look not to slow down at all this game.

Player of the Half:
SF Michael Gary (SO) 17 points, 7 assists, 3 steals, 1 rebound 7/7, 1/1 3pts

Second half the pressure of the Tigers were too great as they easily win by over 30. And the Tigers didn’t let them get within 25 the whole second half, while the starters took another half off. This game was dominated from the inside as the Tigers made a higher percentage and inside points than the Orangemen.

Texas Southern (9-0) 90 @ Memphis (5-2) 76
11/25

First half was exciting with both teams tempo’s as fast breaks. Which propelled the teams to a high scoring first 5 minutes in as the score was 29-27 Texas Southern lead. Texas Southern winning the rebounding war (+5 at half) decided to change their tempo to a slower pace and see what they have open instead of the run and gun offense. Usually Texas Southern gets around 22 assists a game from the fast pace, up-in-your-face tempo, but tonight slowing the pace down already have 17 in the first half. Which worked well, before a couple of key starters for TXSO had to sit with a 12 point lead, which ended to be only 5 at half, 46-41.

Player of the Half:
PF Chris Harper (SO) 14 points, 4 assists, 1 steal, 3 blocks, 6 rebounds

“Defense, Defense, Defense. That’s what wins games. I don’t care if you have shooter who can score 70 percent of your points, or that you can shoot like 60% from the field. If you can’t play Defense you can’t win ballgames,” preached Gary George after the win, after coming up with big stop after each other. “If it wasn’t a steal, it was a block, if they did get the shot off and got an offensive rebound, we had everyone crash on him so the next shot was off and we had guys in position to rebound” As Coach George replied to his hard nose defense that game.

11/29

Finally Texas Southern gets some recongetion in the league as they are ranked 25. This game as they take on the 15 Bearcats it looked like Texas Southern would get a blow out, but once again in the first half it looks like it might be a close game as the score at half was 50-43 in favor of the Tigers. Even though they are up by 7, the Tigers made a run and went on a 6-0 run for the last 1:15 seconds before half ended. Could they come out in the second half and change up the tempo and game plan like last week and get another blowout in the second half? We will have to wait and see for that.

Player of the Half:
C Lee Kately (F) 15 points, 2 assists, 2 steals, 4 rebounds

The Tigers again were red hot out of the gates in the second half going on a 22-5 run. Then the tables turned as Hannan and Nagata had a combine 25 straight points for the Bearcats to bring them within 2 points. Tigers feeling the pressure started to shoot from the outside going 2 for 2, to expand the lead to 8 points. Seeing them switch to a 3-2 zone next time, they went down low for an easy layup to grab a 10 point lead with 3 minutes left., and that was all she wrote for this game.

#16 Texas Southern (11-0) 119 @ #6 Duke (7-0) 112 OT
12/15

The first half was completely dominated by Duke. They just used there size to pound the ball inside to jump up to a 23 point lead. Also that didn’t help the Tigers was their shooting. Shooting a total of 7 for 26, and 1 for 6 deep in the first 9 minutes of play. Then in turn the Tigers decided to play the same way as the Blue Devils did and drive inside and draw fouls which they did and went on a 7-0 run and got some key players in foul trouble, so they had to sit down. Final score at half, Blue Devils up, 48-44.

Player of the Half:
PG Warren Bryant (SO) 12 points, 1 assist, 1 steal

Duke took as many as a 14 point lead in the second half as well as when Harper and Kately came out for the Tigers, but they clawed their way back in the game, but would never take the lead. Fast forward to the last minute. Duke up by 2, 100-98, Blue Devils ball. Now we have a ball game. Freshman Center Ramon Jordan is huge for the Blue Devils making the last 6 shots for his team while shooting 6-6 and 2 for 2 at the line. So what does the Blue Devils do they give it to him down low and with a up and under move makes the basket. So the Tigers throw it down low to also there C, who is now Chris Harper from Lee Kately fouling out and he does a nice cross over to go in for the jam. 42 seconds left. Running the ball up court they surprise the Tigers and throw an alley-op to who else, that’s right R. Jordan. Harper playing C now and got beat was sitting wide open at half court so they tossed the ball who ran down and easy 2-handed jam. 37 seconds left. Coach George after the timeout said don’t foul, we still have plenty of time. But Warren Bryant didn’t get the message and fouled right away giving his foul total to 4, and sent them to 1-1. Coach George was about to take out Bryant, when they missed the rebound. They threw it out to Adam Ryan who ran down the court got trapped down low started to bring it back out but both men ran away and Adam was left with a wide open basket who hit the lay-up. Tie ballgame now at 104, with just 26 seconds left. Again what do the Blue Devils do. They throw it in to Ramon Jordan who does a turnaround jumper, but has two guys on him and misses it! Rebounded by Michael Gary they hold it for the last shot. Michael gave it up to PG Warren who tried to pass it back to Michael so he could have the last shot but the pass was stolen. The Blue Devil fans go wild in Coach K’s court only to be silent when Warren redeems himself as he stole the ball. Giving it to Michael with only 9 seconds left…he drives…he has nothing from the double team and time expires.

OT. Harper gets the tip and then Warren with the nice touch pass back to Harper for the easy jam for 2, was the start for overtime. That is how the Tigers roll in overtime as they cruise to the lead and the win. Blue Devils had to foul, but knew the game was over since this Tigers team can shoot from the line.

#10 Texas Southern 96 @ #1 Connecticut 90
12/19

When you face the number one team and overall their starters are 96, 90, 90, 92, 88 overall you are going to be in some trouble. How do you defeat them or at least get a lead. Within the first minute of the game gives the 96 Overall PF 2 fouls so he has to sit till half. Still having trouble taking the lead…well get some other people in foul trouble. That’s exactly what the Tigers did as they sent the C, PF, and SG all to the bench in the first half to take the lead at the break, 49-42.

Player of the Half:
SF Michael Gary (SO) 16 points, 2 assists, 2 rebounds

The Huskies would come out and show that they are ranked number 1 for a reason. As the Tigers grew their 7 point lead to a 21 point lead. It looked all by over. Then the Huskies went to a 1-2-1-1 press and the Tigers became ice cold so the Huskies came back and tied up the ball-game with 5:40 left in the game. But Michael Gary the team captain of the Tigers would prove why he is one of the best in College Basketball as for the next 2:48 seconds he either scored or assisted in the score as the Tigers went back up 7 points. With a minute left it was cut to 2, until Michael Gary came back on the court from a breather to hit a big 3 to push the lead to 5, and then Uconn had to foul and that was all the Huskies could do as they saw their first lost on the year, and the new powerhouse team in Texas Southern rise up with the victory.

#7 Texas Southern (13-0) 99 @ Southern (0-7) 58

Some people thought just from the earlier games that Texas Southern played would cruise in this game as they opened up there league play. Plus it comes from the worst team in the league as in Southern. It sure was what people expected as there was just steal galore and easy buckets from the fast pace Tigers. 54-23 going into half. Tigers alone had 15 steals in the first half to give them the big lead.

Player of the Half:
SF Michael Gary (SO) 20 points, 3 assists, 1 steal, 1 block, 4 rebounds

All starters were benched for the rest of the game as Texas Southern went on to win easily. Southern didn’t help its cause in this game only shooting a mere 24 percent from the field. They shot better from three pointers, 2/8 for a 25% shooting from deep.

5:14 seconds it finally took for Alcorn St. to score a basket and it was on a deep three. Now the lead was 16-3 for the Tigers as they started the game. In that time they had had more turnovers (10) than shots (4).Only positive note so far is they have more rebounds than Texas Southern right now with the edge 5-2. Next points they get is from the foul line as they already got Texas Southern in foul trouble in the first half. 39-11at half. Only positive by Alcorn is to hold Texas Southern under 40 points in the first half all season.

Player at the Half:
C Lee Kately (F) 12 points, 1 assist, 6 steals, 6 rebounds

Second half was just as bad almost as the first. But the Texas Southern had all their bench people out so it was easier for Alcorn St. to score and did they score plenty in the second half, but it wasn’t enough from the big first half gap.
