04-05 Guardians Classic HOSTED BY MIZZOU

Under its traditional tournament format, 16 teams from 16 conferences face off in college

basketball's most exciting new preseason event. The Guardians Classic was created in 2001

as a two-week exempt tournament consisting of four regional sites hosted at campuses

across the country. The winner from each regional site advances to the championship round

in Kansas City, Mo. The NCAA awarded the Guardians Classic this special exemption, which

allows teams to play in these games in excess of the normal maximum number of contests.

In 2004 the event features three host sites and 12 teams, with the winner of each regional

site plus a "wild card" team advancing to compete for the championship in Kansas City.

Inaugural champion Missouri returns to host this season along with 2002 tourney champ

Creighton and Ohio State.

The Guardians Classic promotes the National Association of Basketball Coaches' Guardians

of the Game prgoram, dedicated to recognizing the role coaches play in the lives of

student-athletes and their communities.

04-05 Guardians Classic HOSTED BY MIZZOU

The Cards advance to the final game of the tourney where they will face off against the Missouri Tigers. Soph. Linas Kleiza will look to foil the Cardinals attempt at walking away with this tourney victory. He was last years runner up for Big 12 Freshman of the Year, he's a versatile player who can play the 3,4 or 5 spot. But the Card's have weapons of their own, Francisco Garcia and Larry OBannon led the way in their first round victory, Freshman Juan Palacio also showed signs off good things to come, debuting with a double-double (12 pts 10 rebounds). The Tigers won by 8 over Brown University to advance to the final game, 69 - 61, they will need similar production if they hope to topple the #16 Louisville Cardinals.

Nov. 27th, 2004 - Redbird Arena - Normal, IL.

Dickie V' let the cat out of the bag when he labeled Senior Trey Guidry one of the top 5 shooters in the nation this year(Story (http://www.redbirds.org/../story.taf?_id=4327)). Guidry showed us that he can score last week dropping 28 pts in their loss to Penn St. Question is, Will they be able to win this year? Last year was rough as they could only muster 4 wins on the year, and things arent looking much better this year.

Illinois St is one more scorer away from being able to really compete for a tourney run. Unfortunately this is Guidry's last season as a Redbird, if someone doesnt step up soon, this season will be worse than last. I will have fun with Guidry though, win or lose, the guy has flame.

Redbird Review

http://niri.ncsa.uiuc.edu/virdir/raw-material/faces/uthakkar240.jpg

Hello Redbird fans, I'm Elwood Hemish and welcome to the first edition of the Redbird Review for the 2004-2005 season. In these periodic reviews we invite members of the team, either players, coaches, etc... and have them take the time to answer a few of the questions that have been asked.

With that said lets get right to it, today we have with us Senior SG Trey Guidry and Coach Daniel Bishop, Trey, Coach welcome....

Lets start with you Trey,

(Hemish reads question......)

Brendan Lafarge(Kankakee)

Trey...its your senior year, with all the hype over your shooting ability, will you be looking to make a run for any 3 pt records to better your chance at the draft?

Guidry - My teamates told me to fire at will, but I am always looking to play team ball before looking out for myself. If I should happen to break a record, that would be cool, but I am not purposely lacing up every night looking to chase one. I want to win more than anything this year.

Roman Thomann(Peoria)

You guys didnt do so hot last year, what's going to be different this year?

Guidry - We have a new coach this year, new plays, new scheme...

Bishop - I caught a few games last year and the team looked great athletically, just in some instances didnt execute properly. Weve been working hard since the summer and everyone has picked up on the new system just as I thought they would.

2 games under their belts and the Redbirds are still looking to pick up their first win of the season. The UIC Flames travel to Normal with a (1-1) record on the year, led by the athletic lefty, Ced Banks. Senior Trey Guidry was unconscious last game as he finished with 46 in a losing effort to Tennessee Martin, in the Redbird Review he stated that he would trade in his points in a moments notice for the team to get a win, as he does not want to repeat what they did last year.

Dec. 7th, 2004 - Redbird Arena - Normal, IL.

The Redbirds looking for their first win of the season host the Alcorn State Braves tonight here at Redbird Arena. The Braves come in at (1-3), and according to the scouting report dont have many weapons to match up with the Redbirds. Guidry was seen in the gym pretty early this afternoon working on his shot, we got a chance to speak with him right before the game. Guidry, "Weve worked out hard all week and are determined to turn this season around as soon as possible. We feel that this will be the game that will get us on track, and we hope to come out and do just that."

The Braves are led by senior center Rhau-Chavis Landfair, but theres not much help after that, as the Braves lost two of their best players at the end of last season to graduation.

The Redbirds finally get their first win of the year Vs. the Alcorn State Braves. They were heavily favored to win from the jump and a game like that is just what they needed.Todays game the matchup is a lil closer, but still on the positive side for I. State. The Marshall Thundering Herd have a few more capable scorers on their roster, to the Redbirds will have to step their game up if they want to continue winning.

Guidry is a 3 point monster. Ill state would be an intimidating mid major if not for losing Marcus Arnold who average in double figures and was their go to go. Arnold transfered to Illinois and will likely be a starter next year to help fill the void for Roger Powell JR who should be drafted. I'm sure with Arnold you would be above .500 as after playing with Ill state the have exceptional premiter play but not inconsistent rebounding or post play.

I agree....Right now he's all I can really turn to for scoring, In the beginning I had hoped Gordan would be able to take care of business on the inside, but so far I havent been able to get him off. The shots that I take and miss with him are usually right under the basket, thats a lil discouraging hence I probably wont look to him much in the future. Dilligard is a lil better, but even he has his problems getting in the lane, once I find someone who will consistently put up 14 + a night with Guidry, we should be able to make it happen. Till then...its gonna be a long season.

Thanx for stopping by....

I can score every now and then with Greene, Alexander has a nice stroke as well. I just wish Dilligard would step up and give me consistent double double's, or else this season will mirror their last.

Dec. 11th, 2004 - O'Connell Center- Gainesville , FL.

The game everyone has been waiting for, the first real test for the Louisville Cards'.The Cards come into Gainsville resting on a 3-0 record so far this year, the Gators with a 5-1 record. In last years matchup between these two teams the Gators got the best of Louisville in overtime 110 - 100, led by Anthony Roberson.(See Here... (http://vvb.proboards24.com/index.cgiaction=display&board=ESPNCJ&num=1075304280&start=15))

Pretty much the same teams as last year and the Cards come into Florida with a chip on their shoulder. Garcia has been playing huge so far this year as well as the Gators Roberson, who has been under the microscope lately. They critics say he should become a pass first PG instead of always looking to create his own shot, his team says they want him to shoot the ball. We will see what direction he chooses tonight, as neither team are looking to drop this game.

Yuck...that was a fluke, I tried to have someone cancel out Roberson's points and get Palacios to get in the mix as well. But it didnt work out, had I not tried to go score for score this game would have been ugly, Roberson caught fire.

Dec. 18th, 2004 - Freedom Hall, Louisville, KY

The Louisville Cardinals get a chance to display their skill facing off against another ranked opponent in the #14 Kentucky Wildcats. This rivalry has dated back all the way to the beginning between these two teams, fighting for bragging rights and the chance to say "We are the number 1 team in Kentucky". Garcia and Dean will both have to play well tonight, if they are looking to come away with the victory. Rookie PG P.Sparks has been lighting up the nets for the Wildcats, Garcia and Co. will hopefully douse the flame.

Jan. 3rd, 2004 - McLeod Center - Iowa

The Redbirds not able to get much of a streak going look to atleast notch their second consecutive win of the season Vs. The Northen Iowa Panthers. In a pretty even matchup, Guidry and the gang ride into
Iowa after a hard fought battle in Missouri, where they just squeaked by the SW Missouri St Bears in OT, 85 - 80. The Panthers are led by Ben Jacobsen who as of late been averaging just over 17 pts per game,
and willing to do anything in his power to halt the Redbirds. Its almost time for tip off, lets head down to the floor for the action.

Illinois State Redbirds (4-5) Vs Northern Iowa Panthers (4-5)

1st Half - 36 - 28 ILS

Guidry kicks off a 15-6 run late in the half to take the lead from the Panthers just before the buzzer. He led all scorers with 17 first half points. Greene/Plank/Gordan each with 5 pts. For the Panthers,
B. McKowen 13 pts 3 stl and B. Jacobsen with 6 pts.

1st Half Highlight

Guidry puts one down....

2nd Half - 81 - 62 ILS

Panthers shoot horribly, just 34% for the game, opening the door the Redbirds to run away with it.

As you can tell by my screen name, I'm a huge ISU Redbird fan, a season ticket holder.

ISU in real life is 10-6 (2-3 in the Valley). Last year, they won 10 games all year. Gordon is a beast in real life, the leading scorer for ISU, Trey is second, and is deadly from outside, when he's on. He is streaky.

Awesome job picking the 'Birds. I hope you continue to do this for a long time, I'll be checking in!
