1st Round of Coaches vs Leukemia(sp?) Classic

Grambling (0-0) vs Birmingham Southern (0-0)

This game marked the first game for Chris Champion as Grambling Head Coach. Prior to the game Coach Champion expressed the fact that he felt his team could finish as .500. Well as of right now the Tigers are 1-0 and well over .500, despite getting outrebounded the Tigers won due to their scrappy defense, unselfish offense, and bench play.

The Tigers finished the game with 25 Bench points, 10 steals, and 22 assists. The game was tight throughout, although Coach feels the play of his Sophmore PG Delbert James got them over the top. " Del was out there playing better than expected. I know people had doubts including myself to whether or not he could make the conversion from SG to PG. After this game I think he has answered those questions," Champion stated.

Delbert James had a solid outing with 9 points, 7 assists, 5 rebounds, and 2 steals. The other 3 freshman also stepped up J.R McBryde who rallied up 18 points on a sort of off night shooting. The play of the games to many was during the first half with Grambling leading by9 trying to put the game away, James stole the ball and stopped at the free throw line and instead of settling for the jumper tossed an alley oop that was slammed through for a 1 handed tomahawk by FR Derrick Starks.

Final Score: Grambling 72 , BSC 55

Preview for Grambling (1-0) vs # 12 Miss. State (1-0)

MSU PF Lawrence Roberts has put up 27 annd 8 Boards so far this season, the key to the game is simple. STOP ROBERTS! MSU can expect traps, double teams, and every kind of zone and pressure known to man to stop Roberts. The Bulldogs have more size downlow and more quickness in the backcourt. A flawless game will be needed for this one to be competitive.

2nd Round of Coaches vs Leukemia Classic
Grambling (1-0) vs #12 Miss. State (1-0)

Word around town was that Miss. State would dismantle the undersized Grambling Tigers along with breaking their spirits. The outcome of tonight's game was anything but that. Freshman J.R McBryde once again took over the game by scoring a game high 32 points. The story before the game was stop Roberts, I mean he only averages almost 30 and 10, tonight Roberts had 26 and 10 not bad at all. The real story of the game though is the final score which is not a misprint Grambling 77 and Miss State 69. The two teams were even in all statistics except Grambling as a team dished out 27 assists.

Coach Champion once again raved about the play of his young point guard. "Delbert once again steps up and shows the nation that he is legit for the 2nd game in a row almost a triple double, 20,10, and 7 thats like whoa!" The thing that really was like "whoa" was SR Chad Orfini getting 16 points and 11 Rebs. "This is just a beginning of what will happen here at Grambling, it feels good to beat a team of this caliber, its on to the semifinals baby!"

Final Score: Grambling 77 , #12 Miss State 69

Grambling Playmakers:
PG: Delbert James- 20 pts, 10 as, 7 rebs
SG: J.R McBryde- 32 Pts, 3 red, 2 as

Preview for Grambling (2-0) vs Princeton (2-0)

Ok this is the semifinals so the CVL classic , but lets not get to hyped up because this game will be a blowout. Princeton's halfcourt offense and man to man defenses will both be exploited. Look for the final score to be huge, the Grambling backcourt to continue to be solid, and Grambling to punch a ticket to the finals.

Preview for Grambliing (4-0) @ Houston (1-0)

The Tigers are in for their biggest test since the Miss State game. Houston has the advantage of being the home team, and for the first time a team has more overall speed than the Tigers. For the Tigers to pull out the win they need a big game from their star Freshman J.R McBryde who is averaging 20+ points a game. PG Delbert James who is averaging nearly a triple double with 13 points, 9 assists, and 7 rebounds will be looked upon to continue his great play.

FR PF Derrick Starks will be injured according to Coach Champion for maybe the next 4 weeks according to Coach Champion with a broken wrist. Jaivon Saunders will be moved to PF, as their leading 6 man Tommy McCalebb will start at the 3.

For Houston all of their points come from their backcourt with Smith , and Owens averaging 20 points a piece. The Tigers will likely run a 3-2 zone.

Grambling (4-0) @ Houston (1-0)

Whether Grambling finished this game at 5-0 or 4-1 really doesnt matter. This AD has to be pumped about this teams turnaround so far. Houston just found out how good of a coach Chris Champion is. "We started the game out in a 3-2 zone and were pressing. After we were down 8 I rezlized they are going right to the middle of our zone, and gettin easy dunks off our press," Champion stated. "That's when I switched to the 1-1-3,1-3-1, and 2-3 and dropped the press to confuse them."

Houston commited 16 turnover compared to the 6 from Grambling. The final score of the game ws 73-49 Grambling but the real story was the Grambling players. J.R McBryde had maybe his most complete game of the season, and appeared to have fun due to not having the whole game on his back. Tommy McCalebb who Coach Champion said is his X-Factor had a nice outing hisself. And of course Delbert James continued his solid play also.

Grarmbling now at 5-0 has momentum heading into their home opener.

Final Score: Grambling 73, Houston 49

Grambling Playmakers:

Delbert James: 14 Pts, 10 as, 6 reb, 2 to

J.R McBryde: 13 Pts, 4 as, 7 reb

Tommy McCalebb: 11 Pts, 2 as, 3 stl, 5 reb

Chad Orfini: 8 pts, 12 reb

Preview for Grambling (5-0) vs Stephen F. Austin (1-2)

SFA is not very overwhelming on paper, although at the beginning of the season neither was Grambling. The best player for SFA is their point guard Stephane Perez the 5'10-150 junior, who is averaging 14 points a game. SFA does not have another player averaging over 8 points. Slow down Perez and the game should be a rout.

McByrde and James will due their numbers, Orfini who is averaging 7 and 7 should get around a double-double. Tommy McCalebb who is the team's 'secret weapon' should have a nice night now that he is finally starting. Off the bench Freshman Corien Temple will get a lot of playing time if it is indeed a blowout for Grambling's homeopener.

Grambling (5-0) vs Stephen F. Austin (1-2)

The best backcourt in the nation? McBryde and James has been the theme all year long. James racked up 10 assists again, as McBryde racked up 20 points again. Not much to add to the story really Grambling continues to roll over teams.

Final Score: Grambling 87, SFA 51

Grambling Playmakers:

J.R McBryde: 24 Pts, 2 as, 2 reb

Delbert James: 15 Pts, 10 as, 7 reb

Douglas Ingram: 14 Pts, 3 as, 2 stl, 2 reb
