1/19 - MINNESOTA GOLDEN GOPHERS (10-3) @ NORTHWESTERN WILDCATS (13-3)

Gophers Pounce on Wildcats, Win by 48
January 20th, 2013

EVANSTON, ILL. - The Minnesota Golden Gophers thouroughly routed the Wildcats of Northwestern last night in Big Ten League action. The Wildcats came on strong, at one point going up 13-4 in the first half. But that was when Minnesota got it together, going on 21-4 run from there and going into halftime leading 38-25. The Gophers came out in the seconds half and exploded. They started out the second half with a 14-3 run, and Northwestern never got closer than their halftime defecit of 13.

The second half breakout was sparked by point guard Morris House, who scored 7 points in the first minute of the second half. House would score a total of 18 points in the game, with 15 of the 18 coming in the second half. The real story though was the play of Minnesota center Baboucarr Watts. Watts had 28 points and 4 rebounds, and was the spark plug for the early comeback of the first half, scoring 12 of the 21 points on Minnesota 21-4 run to take the lead in the first half.

Minnesota's pressure defense worked very well against the turnover prone Northwestern offense, forcing 15 turnovers and holding Northwestern to just 41 points. When Northwestern did get the ball past half court, the execution of the zone defenses Minnesota used was impeccable. Northwestern posted a measly field goal precentage of 38% and was 0 for 5 from beyond the arc.

Minnesota's offensive approach was to try and slow it down and wait for a good shot to open up, and boy did they. Minnesota offense just started raining jumpers into the hoop, shooting 70% from the field and 50% from three point land. Minnesota's 89 points marks the third time in their last five games and the fourth time this season that they've scored over 85 points. Great defensive play has been a staple to Minnesota basketball under coach Gene Keller, and they've allowed less than 60 points in 8 of 14 games so far this year, including a season low of 38 points allowed against Sacred Heart on December 26th.

Minnesota next game is on January 23rd when they visit 8-6 Penn State. Minnesota improved to 11-3 on the season and Northwestern dropped to 13-4.

PLAYER OF THE GAME:
Baboucarr Watts, C, MINN - 28 points, 4 rebounds, 3 blocks

What difficulty are u playing on?? I have a hard time believing that u could beat a 13-3 team by 48 on All-American, maybe not even on all conference, unless u have like all starting 5 90+ players

They were 13-3 because all of their non-conference opponents were nothing... I didn't even play the game I did coach mode on it and just called plays and substitutions and all that. Their overall was like 85 and mine was 94...
