View Full Version : "Be the All-Star" mode...here it is!

Ok, I've been pushing this idea for awhile. Rcubedactually kicked off this idea so I gotta give him credit for it, but a few of us took it that little bit farther. I tried looking for his post but couldn't find it. It could of gotten deleted or maybe it's still out there. Either way, here it is. I'll do my best to explain.
Essentially, "Be the All-Star" mode puts you, the game player, in the drivers' seat of a real NBA career from the day you are drafted until the day you retire. You create a player and take him either to greatness or embarrassment throughout the course of his career.
Before the mode actually kicks off, you'll need to create a player(or import one from college hoops). You'll choose what he looks like but his attributes will be base attributes that are chosen at random from player to player. The reason for this is that players like LeBron James come once in a blue moon. Most good players need time to develop further. Don't worry, it gets better from here.
After you create your player, "Be the All-Star" mode kicks off. The draft before the next season is held and with the computer making the picks, your player gets drafted accordingly. The team that you get drafted to is the team that YOU will be the user for. So let's say that you get drafted to the Clippers. That will be the team you will control for this season. The good part is it gives us an excuse to use teams in a season that maybe we normally wouldn't. Will your player be the extra piece that sits the bench for a good team, or the rookie savior; the guy a team is looking at to turn the franchise around? The draft will decide that.
From here, it's all up to you. What kind of player do you want him to be? "Be the All-Star" mode keeps track of your players improvements in areas during all of his seasons in the NBA. If your player is a PG and you want him to be a stellar passer, then you need to make a lot of good, smart, open passes with him. The more assists you rack up(with less turnovers) will affect your player's passing attribute. Gradually, his rating in this category will rise, allowing him to do better moves. This could work great with create-a-dunk that everyone seems to want. Once you hit that certain level, maybe you can give your player a signature move. It will be like this for every other category as well. You can basically sculpt your player to be what you want, and at the same time it's making you better at the game because it's putting you in a position where you have to play smart basketball if you want your player to improve and log more minutes for a team. Practice modes can be easily incorporated into this as well. Your player's role is also figured during his career. Is he the player the team can count on to carry the load when they need it? That would put him in the "leader" role. Maybe he will fit the "contributor" role. Teams will look for these qualities in you when trying to aquire that extra piece.
OK, so you've got your player on a team and starting to show good signs of improvement. Is your player good enough to start yet? Have you been starting him just because and he is sucking it up? Maybe you're sick of playing for a team that you've had consecutive losing seasons with? YOU ask the coach for a trade(or demand one). Asking for one would allow you to have your say in the team you want to go to, but it wouldn't guarantee that you would get traded. Demanding a trade, however, gives you a better chance of a trade going thru but less control over which team you get to go to. Once a trade is completed, the NEW team your player went to is now the team you are the user of. Basically, whichever team your player is a part of is the team that you will control. This will really show you the impact your player has on a variety of different teams, plus you get excited over a good trade because you get to control a better team possibly.
This goes on for as many seasons as you can get by on. Will you rise to the top tier of NBA talent and play many seasons or retire after two years due to injury and dismal stats? It all depends on you. In "Be the All-Star" mode, we keep track of how many times you have appeared in the All-Star game, how many MVP's you've won, Sixth man, All-NBA teams, championships you've won, etc. It will keep track of your career "highs and lows". Did you have a game two seasons ago where you lit up a team for 53 points and hit your career high? You'll be able to go back and look at all that stuff. You'll also be able to break REAL NBA records and see which records you actually own. If ESPN incorporated the Cribs idea from NFL 2K5, then this would be an ideal place for all your trophies and records to be accessed. Maybe even be able to put up pictures of your player doin his thing. Instead of saving a replay, save a still of your player in mid dunk or fading away or whatever and then you can view them in your crib. I've seen other games(especially Sega GT racing) where you can snap pics and put them on display so it's possible.
Pretty much that should give you a good idea of this mode. Play till you're done and then announce your retirement to the world. You could have the press conference and everything. I think it was even suggested that you should have an internal clock ticking and after so long, you get a message saying that you are being urged to make a comeback. You can view teams that would give you a contract if you did, but if you do attempt a comeback, you aren't garaunteed anything. You might not get any playing time or have a team interested in you. If you choose not to come back, then you can never use that player again and his number gets retired, perhaps even put into a team's rafters????
Some other things I've heard about that i thought could work nice would be a highlight reel that covers your career when you retire. The cpu could either be automatically saving replays of you during your career or it could access replays that you saved and make a nice lil montage out of it, complete with music you have downloaded.
All in all, i think this idea is the whip. Nothing exactly like this has been done in any other game and ESPN is the one that is most deserving of it. I think they could really do it right. Hope you guys agree with me.
If there is anything you guys would like to add, I'd love to hear it. Let's make it better than 24/7 so they ditch that pile of sh*t. PeAcE.

I think it would be cool too, if say ur coach decides to put u into the game, but u start to hog it because u want ur guy to get some good numbers really quick, the coach will pull u out of the game, and maybe not play u for a while. This way it prevents us, the user, from hogging the ball whenever our player comes on, and actually makes this mode a lengthy proccess. But in turn, if u play well early on, coach will give u a little more freedom, so if u turnover the ball a few times, or take some bad shots, the coach wouldnt pull u out as soon as u screwed up. I dunno its just an idea....

That really is a great idea! I would love to play something like that. I don't remember if you already put this in there or not, but it would be good to raise stats in daily or weekly practices that you can actually participate with your players in.
]You shoud introduce this to the Developers Imediately!!!!!

its a great idea. I think this is in a different more crappier b-ball game though. Any way like what was said before the only problem with this is if your player goes on you will pass to him and end up giing him like every single shot just so his numbers are good . Apart from that it is an excellent idea. It could be a superp game option or a really s'hit one depends on how they make it

Sorry I've been away for so long guys. I'm glad everyone really likes this idea. I think i might of screwed up the poll when i set it up because every vote you give marks a vote for both answers for some reason. Anyways the positive feedback is awesome. I believe someone mentioned stats raising or decreasing as the seasons play on and that's the whole thing right there. The more foolish you play with your CAP, the worse he's gonna get. Like i said, not only is it a fresh idea, but it helps us all brush up on our skills if we want to make our player become elite. PeAcE.

How the hell is the poll half and half? COME ON! "Be The Allstar" is so much better than "24/7" it ain't even funny.

Like I said, i think i f'ed up when i did the poll....just for the hell of it, i voted for the idea and it gave a vote to both answers....regardless, ppl obviously like the idea and it just keeps getting better.

How about this...to add to realism make injuries more real. Maybe have something minor, like a player getting hit in the nose and putting the towel over his face while he walks offcourt. Or if a player injures his leg, his jumping goes down until he heals totally, or he could worsen the injury if he doesn't wait to play. A player coming back from an injury will have lesser stats than before and he'll work his way back up to normal (or maybe he won't as sometimes injuries affect a player for the rest of his career). The players could even return to the team wearing protective gear(i.e. Rip's mask, leg brace, etc.).
This is a reach, and i mean "reach", but when you initially create your character, you choose his face and he ages as the seasons go on. That would be nice, but it's not important.

Another thing that i think would be good in the game: If you can tap the shoot button to pump fake a shot, you should be able to tap the button on defense and not fully jump to block the shot, but maybe get up a bit on your toes. This would make for some very interesting shooting situations. Of course, fully pressing the button would attempt a block, as normal.

The CPU could make the coaching decisions in the games, including the lineups. So your player may not get the playing time unless he's good enough. Also, during the timeouts maybe the 'cpu coach' could talk to your character to tell you how you could better help your team. Kinda' like the weekly player personalities in the present Association mode.
For example if you're shooting 2-22 for three pointers, the coach could tell you to stop taking too many threes and pass more often. If you choose not to play using the coach's guidelines and you're playing bad, the CPU could choose to take you off the court or if continue to disobey the coach through the course of the season he might even consider trading you.

March 9th, 2005, 07:19 PM
Excellent Idea! What about if your player is not good enough and is force to just wait for someone to sign him or go to the NBDL to get his skills up. After a while NBA scouts see you and if you good they might sign you and if you are not good you continue to be in the development league.
fenderjester
March 9th, 2005, 07:55 PM
Exactly! You guys got it. This would prevent you from being a ballhog thru the whole mode just to get your CAP stats up. Like i said, stats would move up and down throughout your career depending on your performance in that area. So, if you're shooting a million three pointers and make a handfull, then your outside shooting is going WAY down and you will probably lose playing time for being a retard. Taking a few open threes when you get a good look will improve your percentage and your outside shooting will see an increase as a result of good shot selection. All jokes aside, you guys are gettin the gist of this mode and more ppl are starting to talk about it. We need this in next year's game!

props to whoever came up with this.. u nailed almost everything.. but.
i have some suggestions, it would be nice if you could work your player out..so that when he first comes in the league he is skinny like most players..then when u start working him out he will gain more muscles..and aging in the face woul dbe nice too...and if this be the all-star mode could be multi-player it would be best ever...so that u and some one else could get players...maybe both of them on the same team...or both of u guys in the same season just facing each other when ever your scheduled to.. this would work how multi-player franchises worked in 2k4..just two different accounts.. like different users.. like user1 would control 1 team and the drafted layer and user2 would control a team and the player they drafted... it would make it more competitive..for something of this caliber, you would need to erase 24/7 mode and maybe street mode...but this would sell...

March 15th, 2005, 08:33 PM
....also like the multi-player idea. If it could be XBox live compatible, you could have teams with a few CAPs on it, or teams with ALL CAPs on it.....probably won't see that anytime soon, but it would be cool to think of playing some 2K franchise online and knowing that all the guys on my team are ppl actually playing their own CAP from their XBox.

One of my friends suggested something like "Be the AllStar" but with create a team instead. You make a team, enter them as a new franchise in a season and play. You start of with little talent and try to build a winning franchise over the years. Thought it was a good idea.
Laker-4-Life
March 19th, 2005, 05:08 PM
This is a very good idea because it makes the game MUCH better because Franchise mode or Association mode needs more depth and the game in gereral and having something like this is better than 24/7. Great Idea :D
fenderjester
March 23rd, 2005, 07:59 PM
I thought so too.....and how about coaches gettin techs and getting thrown out of the game? Maybe this could affect things as far as having the assistant coach run things and how the team operates under these circumstances. Have the coaches miss games for surgery or personal reasons during the season, or at least have the option to turn this on or off for the people that aren't that fanatical.
fenderjester
March 28th, 2005, 08:12 PM
Just throwin a random idea out here.....maybe after completing "Be the All-Star" mode, this unlocks your player for online play. At the very least, we should have the option of using a custom team or CAP online if we wanna pit teams or players against our friends.
pwuche
March 29th, 2005, 12:31 AM
that would be cool, to play online with other be an allstar players, but it would suck if everyone on your team had face 7 from the CAP setup. There should be a method of creating players like in THQ's smackdown series. We should really be able to build our own faces the way we want to

the game should be modeled like nba inside drive 2004... in the franchise your player's rating improved as an effect of how you played in the game...it showed how many 30 pts games you had in the season.. and how many 40 pt games... bring back all statistic categories...like double double triple doubles..or even quadruple doubles..this should be able to be viewed in the franchise when you go to statistics...you should be able to check one players stats.. if anyone from sega sports is reading this....PLAY NBA INSIDE DRIVE 2004... they have so very very excellent features...

April 3rd, 2005, 12:45 AM
Another good "Be the All-Star" idea: Maybe along the road to stardom, you can look up your stats and somewhere in there it will tell you where you're at....have some kind of meter to show how you rank on the NBA scale. It could be something simple like common bencher, sixth man, starter, all-star. It would show you what progress you've made, if any. Maybe one season you hit all-star status and the next season is horrible and you're bumped back down to starter or even sixth man as the years go on.
Also if your CAP is at All-Star status, maybe there's an option you can toggle before you start the mode where you have to actually meet with the press after games and have choices on what you can say during the conference. Maybe they want an answer for a difficult loss you just suffered. The press always wants an answer from the main talent. Are you gonna blame the team or take it on yourself? Maybe you wanna boost the team morale by giving positive comments after a big win. This could affect team chemistry or help build your role as a leader, etc. You could really take this idea in many different directions but it would be neat to see. It really all comes with the All-Star tag.
fenderjester
April 6th, 2005, 01:12 AM
Another nice addition....would be nice to see All Stars getting more calls than the average player. If they develop some sort of system to argue a call, an allstar will get calls in his favor, OR if they do call a foul on him maybe he'll occasionally get a makeup call on the next possession or something of that nature.

A suggestion for passing and dunking in the game: If you drive to the hole and press "shoot", the computer will automatically do a random dunk or layup, as normal. On the other hand, when running up court and holding turbo, you can THEN hold in the L Trigger and with both L and R held in bring up a sort of dunk mode where each of your buttons represents a different type of dunk. Maybe you can even set each button for a specific dunk for certain players. You MUST be holding and running with turbo pressed before you hold down L, since the L trigger is also used to post up, but nobody is going to be posting up on a full sprint.
Second thing: Passing. Let us use the right analog stick to move the ball around, much like how you can before you pick up your dribble and can hold it behind you, etc. I want to be able to do that while i'm driving to the hole too. WHILE the regular dunk or layup animations are happening, we should be able to use that right analog to swing the ball to the right to sort of fake a pass before the layup, or scoop it up and under, or even spin the right stick in a 360 motion to move the ball all the way around behind our backs before the layup or dunk. Now here's where it gets interesting...
If you move the right analog in a certain direction and then press it like a button, you will do a variety of passes. Hold the stick up and click it, you can pass it off the glass for an alley-oop. Down and click it will dish to a player trailing you for a dunk. Left and Right would be "no look" passes. You'd move the stick left, then quickly right and click for a no look pass to the right. Now for each type of pass you can do using this method, we need a variety of outcomes. Instead of just one pass and dunk of the glass, lets see new ones often. Instead of just one type of no look, make it look different every time we execute it. Maybe if no teammates are around, you can be on a fast break, hold that right trigger up and click it to pass it off the glass, and while the ball is in the air, run towards it and press shoot to dunk it off of your own pass. We could really get creative with a dunk system like that. This allows the noobs to do a dunk effortlessly by just driving and shooting, but it also allows the more advanced players to really use some imagination.
This right stick would also be effective in the post. While you're holding the L trigger to post up, you can swing that right stick to move the ball around and perform fakes and up and unders before shooting the ball or dunking it.

i love everything about this except i think it would be better if you didnt control what your team does trading wise ect. and after you retire you can either choose to manage a team, coach it, both or make a comeback as a player. your age always stays with you so if your over 42-44 years old you cant comeback as a player.
overall though this is an awsome idea

I love this idea! Love it, love it! I really like the press conference idea, that'd be a sweet touch.
There could also be like a chemistry meter for you with every member of your team. They could use a VIP type system to monitor like who you pass to the most, best scoring lineup, defensive lineup, etc. Say you form a really good tandem with one of your teammates, it can boost team attributes when the tandem is on the floor, or lower the attributes of a teammate(s) who gets 'frozen' and hurt team chemistry. And if a teammate is traded, it can effect the team positively, you know the classic "addition by subtraction" trades, where ditching a disgruntled player actually helps a team, or negatively.
You could even have a rivalry system the same way. Like say you go through the season and play the Celtics and you and Ricky Davis play each head other up. The more you play each other and have comparable stats against each other, you build a rivalry. One that can build to a Magic/Bird level, if you and your rival play to a high enough level.

This is an awesome idea. U can also try incorporating coach mode, that way you have no control of the subs. Or so you are not forcing the coach to put you back in the game to rack up your numbers. The AI handles the subs, and you control this one guy on the court. The AI controls his team mates, but you are actually in charge of this 1 guy. The coach makes the calls, and you execute the offense. It would be interesting to see how the AI handles such complicated assignments. Thank God for the PS3's cell processor, now we can count on the AI making instinctive split second decisions. But yeah dude...this has got to be the simmest idea on here. Everyone else is talking bout create a Dunk....or isomotion, its just plain stupid. Plus 24/7 is a complete waste of time. Its so annoying that i cant even imagine why its still here.

I also think that is a great idea but with this 2k should take an idea from inside drives book and give you a certain amount of points for your created player so he can't be rated 99 right off the bat and certain things you do in games or for the season will give you attribute points.

This idea is absolutely KILLER!!! Love it from top to bottom. I think the only other way this would truly work and stay as true to form as you say, would be to have you be on Player Lock. You have to stay as your player the entire time.
That means you would have to study the offensive plays that your teams run, in the case of you being a PG you would need to study which plays to run at certain moments. If you're a shooting gaurd or any other position, you would need to pay attention to your offensive position on the floor.
Also, you wouldn't be playing the entire 48 minutes on the floor, so the game could skip through moments when you're not on the court and put you into different situations. Or you could have the option of watching the entire game and actually taking part in it, when the coach decides to put you in.
I can't tell you how much I think this idea rocks! We should really get on the phone to 2K and let them know about this one! It could blow LIVE totally out the water . . . **** it would become the embodiment of NBA LIVE!

Good Idea, but It sounds a lot like "the Life", but i definitely would be better than 24/7. Its more of a rpg/ sports spin. also you should be able to equip your player with items that would affect his rating. For example, a leg brace might make you lose some speed, but gain durability.
also have ability to chose a signature move for you character, like long range shot, better dunks, quicker crossover, quicker hands for blocks or steals or better rebounds

Once you reach a certain level, like All-Star status, you could start to get shoe deals and maybe design your own shoe. They already have a shoe creator so this is something very doable, but would make this mode so much cooler.
