View Full Version : I'm speaking up!!! These are the things to fix ESPN!

Everyone's right, the thing that needs to be changed is players not taking lay-ups or dunking the ball when they are right under the basket. Now I'm able to shoot lay-ups or dunk the ball off of the fast break, but the thing that drives me insane is when my post is under the basket and he fades away! There's no post that's going to do that and make the shot... personally, I could care less if they create a separate dunk/lay-up button, just as long as when players are near the basket that they don't fade away. That's all we ask.

There is no need for a pro hop button. If you want the pro hop then buy March Madness. I would really like to see a little more realisticness in the game. As said before, there needs to be suspensions and players that don't make the grade. It would add to the game.

And is it possible to have the actual coaches in the game or is there some kind of copyright thing with that? I would like to see them give a reason in a legacy to why the AD's offering me a job. And I mean, "we fired our coach," "our coach left,"... you get the point.

I would also like to see some improvements with creating a school. improvement the first is that I would like to be able to put something above the number on the front of the jersey that somewhat resembles the name of the school or the nickname. just having a number on the front looks incredibly stupid and makes no sense. and maybe there could be something where there are different number styles. this is nothing important, just a personal issue. the first problem (team name) definitely needs to be fixed. issue the second is that my created team should have a tough road. this means that when they are created that they should automatically be placed into the Independent "conference." if you want to argue about that, there are couple of independent teams that aren't in the game, so instead of replacing a team that's already in a conference, my team should have to be invited to join that conference. that would make it more of a challenge to someone and very intriguing (pardon the spelling). issue the third is please lose the things that adjust the color and put samples of color in the game. I can't really explain this, but put something in the game like there is with the AOL messenger that allows you to choose a color. that way there are different shades of blue and stuff. it's too weird trying to adjust everything in the game, as far as color goes, when I am creating a school, I can't always make it perfect and it frustrates me.

something else that I would like to see is schools succeeding year in and out. every time I get to about year three, Michigan State is at the bottom of the Big Ten. there is no chance of this happening in real life. I don't care how good the Big 10 gets, MSU will always be in the upper half.

I can't overemphasize the thing about players not making the grade and players leaving for reasons. players should get kicked off the team. players should act up and stuff. why can this happen in real life and not in a video game? if you want to make your game realistic, put this in and it will take care of a lot of the problem (that and having the players dunk/lay it in when they are close to the basket). all us fans want is a game that's close to reality.

something else that I would like to bring up is that I don't like having all of my recruits being left-handed. there is an easy solution to this; have something on their "player card" that says that they are left-handed.

this brings me to my newest complaints about recruiting. my big issue is about the player cards. when I am going to recruit a player, I should be able to see his player card (although I would prefer to see a stat sheet) before I decide if I want to recruit him or not. I don't like going to recruit a kid and then seeing that he wants to stay close to home when I am a school on the other side of the country. there needs to be more stuff on the player card. how about putting the kid's points per game and boards per game? and his vertical jump? and then it would be nice to have a coach's comment and how much potential the coach thinks the kid has. we hear about all of these success stories in college basketball, so just make them in the game too. and let's put the kid's grades in the game! the game needs partial qualifiers and kids that are not eligible. it would make the game more realistic. isn't that what we want?

and for the love of God, let's have realistic lay-ups!!! (that means no 360’s…)

the game is almost perfect, now take the steps to make it perfect. it could be the first perfect sports video game ever.

What about this idea? This was mentioned in an earlier post and I'm going to twist it a little. I really like the idea of editing your school. During your legacy, it would be nice to be able to get different uniforms and possibly move into a new gym. And of course, when you get new uniforms (just like it should be when you create a school...) you should be able to put the name of your team. There should be more uniform styles. And more shoes.

Something that is minor is that there should be more tattoos and maybe having barbed wire around the bicep, which is a popular tattoo in the world.

Something else that is semi-minor is that in the career legacy mode, I should be able to edit my player's name, number, and appearance (what stuff he wears).

However something else that I consider major is that when I have a guy with a 95 speed rating steal the ball and go down for a lay-up, get caught by someone that is way slower than he is. This should not happen.

And, as chief said, let's put diamonds in the rough in the game.

I have commented on the same issues in various posts on this board. With so many posts we need to keep our posts near the top by replying to them. Please read over my posts (under kghst18) and respond to them. The points you make are very good and I would be interested to read your comments on my posts as well.

I would like to add to something that I had said in my early post. It's about the different button for lay-ups and dunking. This is just my opinion, but I really don't think that ESPN's game needs a different button for it. I don't think that the games should be really similar. Which happens to be the reason that I am not that fond of Isomotion, it's the exact same thing that EA put into NBA Live and all ESPN did was basically rip it off and give it a cool name. Yes, I understand that the NBA has basically turned into street ball, but college basketball has not and that's the reason why we don't need the iso motion. I feel the same way about the pro hop. We don't need it. If you want the pro hop then buy March Madness.

Great observation ThunderBall31. The NBA has turned into 5 guys playing one-on-one. The "zone" defense in the NBA has not really changed this and the teams don't seem to play a defensive scheme until the playoffs. Having said all that, if you want to play street ball then buy an NBA game. College Basketball is still basketball (meaning a team of 5 guys playing together on offense and defense.) Just look at the teams that have been good over the last few years: Duke, UConn, Pitt, ect.... I think PITT is a great example. If you watch any of their games, they don't have a go-to guy. They play a system and ALL of their players contribute to the success of their team. College Basketball has so many different TEAM approaches to the game. Temple has the zone, Princeton returns on defense after the shot attempt, ect... ESPN must not deviate from this principle but add to it. If they tweak their product to reflect an NBA type game performance, they will surely turn-off a lot of gamers. If they make sure certain teams play certain TEAM styles of play, then this product can only get better.

I just hope that one day the nice people that make video games can have a difference between their college and NBA video games.

Right now there are a few things off the top of my head, and they are all posted here. I just think that more people posting this equals a better chance of them listening.

1. Recruiting. I enjoy the recruiting scheme, but information is so limited that it's a crap shoot and nothing more. Sure you can play with the players (which I haven't tried, but prolly should), but I'd like to see speed ratings, shooting ratings, etc. Perhaps, instead of scounting lots of people, you can use your scouting points to go back to previously scouted players and learn more about them. GPA would be a nice touch, or maybe some kind of explanation for being in a JUCO. Sending a coach to watch only gets a cookie cutter response every time that really is not useful.

2. Speed should be a huge factor. Instead, it is a non factor. A pass beats someone running anyday, but not in this game. I've got a few players with 90+ speed and they are caught easily even when they have a clear path from half court.

3. Lefties?/Editing. I don't know why I get all lefties in recruting (no doubt a cause of my crappy Thompson drive) but editing all the visuals should definitely be a part of this. Give him an undershirt, if he has a few bad games maybe he takes them off. Keith Langford of the Kansas Jayhawks changes shoes if he has a bad first half. Why can't I put an armband on a new recruit? Change of uniforms, new arenas, all great ideas, and nice work on that one guys.

4. I've been in the NCAA tournament 4 times now, and got to the final four once. Not one of those times have the tourney games (or the conference tourney, or season tourney) been any different than a regular game. Bilas doesn't say anything different. They don't show tourney stats during the game, and they don't allude to previous games, such as if you pulled a big upset, or even two back to back. Nope, just another run of the mill game.

That's all I've got for now. I'll be playing more and more tho, and I'll have more suggestions to add to the great ones you've all already posted.

Already got another one, give a team prestige similar to what EA sports does in it's college football game. Let me know where I stand with recruits.

I sort of like that you don't know, I mean in real life there's no listing of what teams have prestige or not. You have to figure it out yourself, that's kind of cool. Makes it more interesting and difficult. "should i go for this guy or not?" etc.

I'm sure it's been mentioned, but I have to second a few of the things said;

The presentation of "big games" was very disappointing to me. The feel of a rivalry game, or the ACC championship game feels the same as December montana st. vs the citadel game.

The recruiting system is complete nonsense. How did the developers come up with this, and why did I pay $$ for it? Besides the arbitrary little yellow bar, I have NO idea which recruits really want to go to my school, and which don't. Each recruit says "I want to play for a good coach" or "I want to stay close to home", but these things seem to have nothing to do w/ what he ends up doing. My team could not even be on his list of "top schools", and then next week he'll verbally commit to me. It's almost like y'all created a good interface for recruiting, but then got lazy (or rushed) and shipped the game without ever finishing it.

Also, you could have the top few recruits (with much higher ratings than the lower 5-stars) decide whether to go pro out of high school, or go to college.

I TOO FIND IT INTERESTING THAT THE TOP 5 RECRUITS HAVEN'T EVEN

THOUGHT ABOUT GOING STRAIGHT TO THE NBA. SILLY.
