View Full Version : The Malcolm Payton Legacy

Dan: Today UC Riverside announced the firing of their head coach Dan Christianson. Replacing him will be assistant coach at D3 Grinnell College (that school in Illinois averaging like 128.9 points a game, See NY Times January 29th) Malcolm Payton. Lets go to the press conference:
Press: Coach Payton, what is your goal for this year?
Payton: Well, the AD wants me to win half of our games, but i think we can make it a couple rounds into the conference tournament.
Press: Coach, what do you bring to the table as a coach?
Payton: This year i will bring good man to man D, with a little 2-3 zone to help our shortcomings in size, granted Murray is 6'11 but he tips the scales at 225 so he will need help against the burlier kids. We want cheap baskets on layups and fastbreaks, and we will concentrate on moving the ball around the perimeter against zones and we'll spread it out against man to man. Hopefully, we will win some games with this approach
Dan: And there you have it. A new beginning out in the Golden State

Game 1 of The Coaches Classic:
SW Missouri State vs, UC Riverside
Started off bad. They won the tip and threw it down low for a bucket. Thompson promptly paled under the pressure and threw it out of bounds.
before i knew it i was down 18-8 (they made 9-10)
at 5:08 it was a 35-20 game and i went on a good run to finish off the half at 45-34
With 4:10 to play Murray grabbed an Offensive Rebound and threw it down to make it 66-63 SWMSU. I pressed and Schmidt tapped the ball away and Steve grant Fell on it and called Time Out!!!!!
Joe Williams entered the game and drove past his man for a pull up j. 66-65. They pushed it up and took an ill advised 3. Murray the board
Williams got it and beat everybody down the floor for a layup First Lead of Coach Payton's Career!!!! Williams forces a backcourt violation. At 3:11 Murray was fouled went to the line and made both FTs (they are in the bonus). At 2:34 Thompson checked back in and ran the clock down to 2:00 before nailing a pull up j. 69-66 They pounded it in and their backup center Freddy Schmidt made a bad pass, loose ball, Thompson falls on it!
They run the time down to 1:04 when Thompson drives and lays it home to make it a 12-0 run. They pushed it up, gave it to Schmidt, who made a nice little hook and cut it to 71-68. With 37 seconds left thompson lost the ball (the ball literally fell out of his hands with nobody around him, and rolled out of bounds) and It was time for SWMSU to come back. They threw the ball up the floor and made another hook. 31 seconds left, up 1. Thompson avoids them for 17 seconds and gets fouled with 14 seconds to go. Makes both FT and they need a 3 with 14 seconds to go...
They get it accross half-court in 3 seconds and take their last time out. In bound and a loooong turn around 3 by PG Caton with 9 seconds to go. CLANK!! Murray the board, is fouled. 6.9 seconds to go
Makes the first CLanks the second Grant the board and it was all free throws from here on in.

Semi-Finals
TN-Martin 1-0 vs. UC Riverside 1-0
Very sloppy start, I blocked a shot pushed it up, turned it over, and then they turned it over. Quite smooth.
Anyway at the 12:00 mark i was up 8-4. They were running a 2-3 so i couldnt penatrate as well. i could not put the ball in the basket period, though not for lack of trying. At 10:00 i was tied at 8 and shooting 4 of 15 with seven offensive rebounds. Grant got fouled and made his first, missed his second and UC's basket seemed to have a lid on it!!!!
At 5:00 UCR was trailing 20-19, and the surprise player of the season so far (2 games) Chris Murray, sat down with 8 points and 9 boards
At the end of the first half Thompson had 4 points in thirty seconds to close it at 30-29 TNM in the lead
With 12:30 to go Murray grabbed an O board and tried to jam, STUFFED. Grant picks it up and gives it back to him for a windmill to give them a 33-32 lead we traded baskets for a while
With 7:44 left a miracle struck Scott Tripplett, renowned for his 3 shooting ability, made his first of the season making him 1 of 11 on the year. Game tied at 48.
With 1:42 to go TNM committed suicide, with a 65-64 lead they went to man to man. Eric Thompson, Joe Williams, and Billy Brand entered the game so i had those three and Grant and Murray on the floor, a ton of speed and uh drivability.
After a stunning two buckets against me i was down five and got two buckets meself. Foul with ten seconds to go makes 1 of 2.
I push it up and get hacked in the middle of a shot with 3.4 to go. It all comes down to Joe Williams. Rattles in the first one
Misses the second get the long board. 2.7 to go down 1. I inbound it into Thompson and he MISSES the Jumper!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A tough Loss for the UC Riverside Highlanders

January 25th, 2004, 07:12 PM
Game 3:
UC Riverside @ Loyola Marymount
Before the game Coach Payton came up with a strategy he thought could help him avoid bad losses such as the TNM game. He realized he couldn't succeed nearly as well against the 2-3 zone and so he formed the following strategy:
1. Trap and Press and take necessary risks to score before the zone can set up.
2. Do everything possible to have a 10 point lead at the 8:00 mark of the second half
3. Run 4 corners until they get desparate and go to Man to Man. This will allow us to penetrate to the hole
4. Have five best FT shooters on the court with game on line
Anyway the game started and by us opening up to a 26-17 lead. A 3 by Schmidt and a pair by Tripplett helped sustain the lead. However Loyola crept back into the game and went beserk on a 10-0 run before the half to close it to 44-41.
We traded baskets before we opened up a ten point lead 64-54 with 8:03 remaining. I tried my strategy and it worked (granted i went scoreless until they went to man and immediately fouled) but they scored rarely and the game came down to me being up 64-62 with a 30 seconds to go. They fouled a lot and got three baskets but i matched them going 8 for 8 from the line in the final seconds.

Well its time for our much awaited game vs. a big Conference Opponent...
Washington 2-0 vs. UC Riverside 2-1
Its ON!!!!!!
Things started decently for your Highlanders as their coach studied the play "Reverse the Floor" and they ran it to perfection through the center. Murray had three assists but our young phenom had a horrendous game finishing with 4 points on 2 of 10 shooting and 9 boards.
It was 12 all with 9:11 remaining when Coles got the AND 1 for a 15-12 lead. 5:42 to go tied at 22. I think Tripplett is getting his groove on because he was my (but apparently not Espn's) player of the game. he made a 3. We get a stop, he hits another trey. Then he steals the inbound pass and hits another 3!!! they go down and get a jam. Reverse the Floor falters and Tripps finds himself stuck with the shot clock running down, with the ball at the top of the key. HE KNOCKS DOWN another 3!!!
Then they get a two and he misses. this puts me up eight but i screw up bad with a ton of TO's and no D. They cut it to 38-37 at the Half. They get the ball at the start of the half, put up a J and get hacked. Sargent (the point guard) puts away his two Free Throws with ease. Then they steal the ball Sargent drives puts it up and is hacked... And it Falls!!!!!!!!! He swooshs the FT and im down four.
a Few minutes later im down 6 54-48 and Sargent picks up his 4th and heads to the bench. Without their floor general out there (No pun intended) we go on a 20-0 run with 4 more treys by Tripplett. He finished with 26 points on 8-12 shooting from way back dere. I start my strategy with 6:30 left (as soon as my great run ends) and it doesnt work at all. They get back in it because of sloppy play by Senior point guard Eric Thompson its 70-68 and im happy because theres only 2:25 left. Eric goes to the line and makes his one and one. They push it up but i stop em. Then eric is fooling around with the ball running down the clock and gets called with the charge, 1:12 remaining they walk it up. work it in and get a dunk with 49 seconds to go Eric walks around a little in the front court before they pick him up Man fer Man. Sargent is back in and has engineered the current comeback. Sargent reaches and takes the ball right out of Thompson's hands, under 30 to go. Sargent bursts up the floor But thompson gets in front of him. Sargent gets across half court. He gets to the three line, HE STOPS AND POPS. SWOOSH. im down one with 23.5 to go, i get it accross and am looking for an open shot, then i realize ive run it down to 7.3 seconds.
"TIMEOUT!!!!" Yells Coach Payton. As the boys sit and rest Payton looks for some fresh legs to get him his bucket. The only boy to play less than five minutes was J-Will (Joe Williams). He hadn't been playing a ton after blowing their only loss. But Payton grabbed him by the ear and pulled him to the subs table.
"Williams, in for Thompson" he barked. Then, time was in and Payton watched to see wether his boyz could pull it off.
The inbound went to Williams and he tried to drive but Sargent said "yeah right"! and stepped in front of him, Time winded down, he turned and launched a Jumper from the High Post.....GOOOOOOOOOOD!!!!!!!!!!!!. Washington inbounds with 1.1 to go but all sargent can do is throw up a Length-of-The-Court shot, which doenst make it to the basket.

Reporter: Coach Payton, incredible win, is this the best your team has played all year??
Coach Payton: Actually, i think this is by far the worst we have played all year. We blew 2 double digit leads and we were saved by 2 bench players, Tripps and J-Will, having Career days. Well, OK J-Will's 4 points weren't exactly a career high, but that was prolly the biggest shot he's ever made.
J-Will- That's true Coach, I've never hit a bigger shot in my entire life.
Reporter: Thats...somewhat depressing, actually... Anyway that was your first win over a big Conference opponent, how does it feel?
Coach Payton: It feels great, im really happy and excited that we can apparently beat a team which, athletically, is vastly superior than us, even when we aren't playing well. Not to mention on the road. I've got to hand it to my players, they've got guts.
Reporter: Speaking of Guts, coach, your decision to bring in a boy who had barely played all game and had completely screwed up in his last shot at the spotlight-
J-Will: HEY! I may have missed a Free Thr-
Coach Payton: You did screw it up last time Joey, so just take the beatings for it. Back to the Question, i had to bring in some fresh legs so they could get to the basket, obviously that didnt work but he did have enough spring for the jumpshot and it fell. Thats all for now ladies and Gentleman, we have to catch the team bus.

UC Riverside vs. Arizona State
Before this game i knew it was gonna be a blowout. They were more skilled, more athletic, bigger, faster, stronger, smarter, just flat out better than anybody on my team. It was gonna be a massacre, (1 of 2, i have UCLA next week)so...
As Coach Malcolm Payton sat in his hotel room in Arizona he pondered how he would manage to keep a game of such disproportionate skill levels close, this is what he came up with:
1. Run the Clock down, they cant score when we have the ball.
2. Don't force anything into their zone. NO DUMB TURNOVERS
3. Trap and create turnovers.
4. When you get those turnovers, dont go with the easy layup, set it up and eat some more time
The game started and i got the happy surprise of a lifetime, They played a man to man defense, i would be able to survive on driving, the only thing my peeps are good at.
With the game tied at 13 (6:22 left) i went to the basket (4 on the shot clock) with Steve Grant. He got Ka-Rushed!!! but the shot somehow fell. SuperStar Rich Burns (who committed the foul, his second) sat down and Grant missed the free throw, Murphey grabbed the board and tossed it out, we set it up, ran dn the clock and got another bucket. They played us even until half when it was 25-21 in our favor. I knew i couldnt put my bench out there, they were too small, and too bad. So i had to stick it through with my gasping starters. This worked out because for about 40 seconds of every minute, they were standing still.
Anyway at the beginning of the second half Riddick (SG) nailed a trey to make it 25-24.
We traded buckets until there was 8:30 left when Andy Stanley(PG, POTG) stole a pass and layed it in to make it 34-33 ASU in the lead.
2:36 left. ASU caps an 8-0 run to make it 44-39 ASU. I call a TO and abandon my gameplan, we needed a savior. I chose Scott Tripplett. He nailed a 3 but it was too late, he would make 2 of six but ASU would win it

The latest Revalation of Coach Payton:
"Screw it," muttered Malcolm Payton, Head Coach of the UC Riverside Highlanders, as he chucked another game strategy into the garbage, "I am just going to score and keep them from scoring, i don't care what happens." Had the usually objective coach gone subjective?
The Answer: Yes. The Follow-up Question: Did it matter? Yes!
Did We Pull off the Biggest Upset of the Season? YES!!!
UC RIVERSIDE @ UCLA
As all the big schools seem to, this team started off in none other than the man to man. We decided not to run down the clock but instead, to go to the HOLE! As a result most of my shots were layups and i ended up shooting 69 percent. with 9:30 left i was up 14-7 and the UCLA faithful were stunned into their their first silences in the past 50 years. With 8:11 left it was 20-9 and i swear i could hear people weeping in the stands.
At the half it was 47-35. A lifetime UCLA fan actually dropped dead from the rafters of Pauley Pavilion.
At the 8:30 mark of the second half it was 62-43 and Ben Howland quit.
The game ended at the 7 minute mark when UCLA went into the Bonus.
Thats when i got a call from the Vatican telling me i needed only 6 more miracles to become a saint.
At then end of the game the refs were actually laughing at the UCLA players who couldnt help but look up at the scoreboard's 97-71 score like it was a UFO. Some Students actually ran the entire distance from UC Riverside to UCLA to storm the court at the buzzer.
Final Score 97-71 UC Riverside with the Upset.

Northern Arizona Lumberjacks 3-2 @ UC Riverside Highlanders 4-2
Note: Young recruits Dale Corner and Allan West were in Attendance for Coach Payton's Home Opener. This is the first non pac 10 team we've played outside of the tourney, Big Sky, baby.
Ah Home openers, fans going nuts, the boys getting their first sweatstains on the home uni's, the smell of Northern Arizonian Blood spilled across the floor!
This entry will be short and sweet. However a quick storyline. Chris "Board to Death" Murray is the only player on UCR who is not instate. He infact is from Northern Arizona, and was set to play there until they repealed their scholarship offers in order to sign 6'7" Power Forward Andre Slaughter, who is now their last man off the bench and didn't even play in this one. Well, Mr. Murray had something to prove, and he did.
In the first half the Lumberjacks showed their stupidity by playing me man to man. Big mistake. 2 minutes in it was 12-2 and they burned a timeout. IT was a constant ten point deficet for most of the first half but they closed it to 34-28 with 3:22 left because of the lackluster play from my bench (i decided to give Percy Leadbetter his first shot to play of the season and he demonstrated why he was the last guy off the bench for me). I brought the starters back and they put together a nice little 3 minute stretch finished off by a buzzer-beating layup by Thompson. 51-36 at the half.
The second half was a blowout and Chris Murray (in the first half 15 points 5 boards) got over the whole "rebounding and defense thing" (the reason he plays) and just tried to put the ball in the basket. He finished with 31 and 8.

The players are a little frightened of coach Payton these days as hes been muttering about Game Play Sliders under his breath...
St. Mary's @ 5-2 UC Riverside
In Attendance: Jackie Roberts
The crowd was going crazy as UCR was introduced so Dan and Jay could barely be heard (really my speakers on my TV are shot to He!!). They thought they would see their Highlanders Score, score, and Score again. Nope, the Suprise team in the Nation these days wound up shooting 34.9 percent (3-19 from Downtown for a 158 clip) but they Gaels werent much better shooting 40% (fittingly 4 of 10 from deep).
Anyway with a 1:44 to play Trippy came off the bench and hit 2 clutch treys to make it 20-14. We played the 2-3 all day (as did they). An outclassed St. Mary's team hung tight all night long. It was a close game at the half 26-22 (im shooting 375 they are shooting 384)
Midway through the second half we are locked in a duel 31-30. The players were daring each other to make shots (i almost felt bad about putting the plastic covers over the baskets)
With 4 Minutes to go i was playing subs and it was looking good at 42-34.
St Mary's never gave up though and cut it to 44-41 with 1:47 to play. I called time out. I grabbed my starters and pushed em onto the court. Jameson got passed his guy, spun past a power forward and THREW IT DOWN OVER THE CENTER!!!!! We got a stop and then thompson slid through the zone and put it up as he got hacked it fell (so did he) and he finshed off the three point play. After that it was all FTs. Except 1 thing with time ticking down their Power Forward pulled up next to the hash mark and swooshed it with a hand in his face (he!! of a shot).

UC Riverside 6-2 @ CSU Sacramento 6-2
This game started with me committing to BRUTAL turnovers against their 2-3 zone. They would push it and get easy jumpers to get a 4-0 lead. Then Grant went through the zone and throw it down hard. this continued until i caught up with a run mid first half. We toughed it out and trailed 34-32 at half. Starting off the second half we ran off 11 unanswered and took a nine point lead. At the midway point they had brought it to 49-48 because of my poor shot selection. With 4:30 to go they took a 56-53 lead and I brought in Scott "im gonna shoot a" Tripplett and he hits a turnaround trey to tie it up from like 3 feet beyond the line with the SC running down. Then they went on a 12-2 run and i was down 68-58 with 2 to play. I ran off 9 in a row but in the end i couldn't do it.
Final Score: 67-70
I exited out by accident so i dont have the stats. I do know that Murray had at least 14 points and 14 boards though

I must say that before i looked at the team i was playing i was sure this game was gonna be a breaze. Then i realized they were nearly as good at most things as i was and vastly superior at the 3pt shot.
Anyway...
0-8 University Of Pacific @ University of California at Riverside 6-3
I breathed a sigh of relief as i opened up 12-4 in the first 3 minutes before they called a TO to think it over. My heart then stopped when SF Sam Price hit a turnaround 3 from beyond the arc (way beyond the arc, i thought he was out of bounds.)
This was a Mr. Christopher "Board to Death" Murray's day as less than 6 minutes in he had 8 points and 3 boards. Scott "Im gonna shoot a" Tripplett was grand on kick-out 3s today (cuz he was open) hitting 4 of 6. With a minute forty five left i tried to run down the clock and head to the half on a high note up 46-36. They didnt want me to, apparently they pushed the ball up and made some dumb unforced errors that allowed me a 6-0 to end the half 52-36, Murray had 16 and 10 at this time. They battled back and we traded buckets for a few minutes in the second half before i ran off 15 easy ones to make it 79-49 and end the game. They got as close as fifteen with my subs in but could never get inside the 10 point mark.

I'm with 'ya man...I was wondering the same thing myself.
I don't have a clue.
P.S....Highlanders should be climbing in the list of others in the Polls...if they're not already there now.
(Keep on my Bro...I hope your boys go on a 12-15 game winning streak).
That will certainly open the eyes of the pollsters.

sorry to dissappoint you bruh...i stay current on the legacies too  ....and you can change font size with:
<size=#>insert text here</size>
insert text here
Substitute the arrows with the square braces. You can't just highlight the text and set the font size like the font color. Why...i don't know...
hope that helps....and keep up the legacy bruh.

Thanks everybody who reads these legacies
Also Prez thanks for ur sliders, theyre a godsent
A side note about the UOP game, i didnt notice i guess but Rob Coles Fractured his hand and is out for 4 weeks. Im reshuffling my lineup by mvoing grant to PF and giving Scottie Tripplett the starting SF job.
Without much further ado,
6-3 (1-0)CSU Northridge @ 7-3 (1-0) UC Riverside!
A tough game today, The scouting said watch (6'6 JR SF) Richie Evans on the perimeter. Well he opened up the game by cutting into the lane and catching a nice pass to hit a 6 foot jumper. Then he stole a pass and they worked it around until he hit a long 3 with a hand in his face. i called TO and told my players to go at him. We got a couple fouls on him and he came out. 6:00 to go im throwing the ball around, up 16-13, and then down into Steve Grant, who throws a hook over the PF in their 2-3 zone. SWOOSH! And wats this? a Foul. He hits the FT. He goes to the rack next play and gets fouled, hits the shot, but misses the FT.
At the Half: 30-22 Highlanders over the Matadors, Steve Grant has embraced the PF position with zeal and scored 13 before the half. Richie Evans burned me with his Pull up J for 11. We had a lot of trouble in the first half getting the ball into young Chris Murray, so he finished with 2 points (1-2) and 10 boards.
Starting off the half the get a 9-0 run (capped by an Evans Bomb) to make it 31-30. I certainly started off slow, as we scored our first bucket with 9:30 to go.
5:11: Steve Grant completes his second 3 point play of the game to make it 45-41 me and then he scored 2 more buckets to end it. 49-41 4:30 to go. We played around a bit and the game ended at 63-53.

Here it is... What you've all been waiting for, YOUR UC RIVERSIDE Highlanders!!!!!!!!!
3-7 CSU Fullerton @ UC Riverside 8-3
Firstoff throughout the entire game i was getting my tukus (to use the old Jewish Gramma word) kicked by Clifford "Green" Gables (SR. C. 6'10 250) he finished with 8 points and 12 boards. But only because i went at him with my favorite player Steve "And 1" Grant and caused a lot of fouls.
"We opened up too fast and burned our starters lost a step in the mid-first half, which meant i had to go to my bench a lot sooner than i wanted to," Said Coach Payton after the game.
Indeed we did, opening up 4-0 and pressing all over the floor. However we were too hyped up and the pounding of Cliff Gables calmed the Titans do so they hit shots and we were down before wer knew it. At the 10:00 mark we trailed 10-8. I was shooting 4-13 and the Titans were 5-7. Stevie Grant went to the hole and layed in a tough layup before Cliff wacked him down and it Steve nailed the +1 to make it 11-10. I brought in subs because my dudes had really overextended and were dying. Schmidt proceeded to commit 3 consecutive TOs and give them back the lead. at 4 i brought em all back in and they got us five points for the lead before Diondre Palmer (the guy i was warned to stop in the scouting report.) hit a fadeway at the buzzer to make it 31-30.
We battled halfway through the half and nobody could really get an advantage, We tossed the lead back and forth and nuthing really exciting happened.
"Here we are in UC Riverside's Raucous Arena, here in the Student Rec Center. We are at the seven minute mark and Diondre Palmer is bringing it up. dishes over to Nate Brooks, boys having a fine night with 19, anyway back to palmer, penetrates kicks it out to Brooks, pump fake dish in to Gables. Gables Kick outta Palmer, Jumpshot good!. And Were tied at 48.
"And were back now. 2 to go. UC up 64-61. They wing it around to Grant, Penetrates, accelarates Goes up and OH MY What a jam and theres a foul on Gables and hes gone. Five for Cliff Gables and a free throw coming up for Grant. Its good, and i do believe this game is now over. 1:45 left, Gables gone and UCR up 6. But Dear lord wat a dunk by young mr. Grant. He went up ran into the contact with his bodyand windmilled the ball over Gables right shoulder into the bucket. WHat a PHenominal play by the 6'7 sophmore.
The game was over after that. I limited them to 3 points and added 9 more on FT's.
Final Score: 76-64 UCR over the Titans of CSU FULLERTON.

"HIGHLANDERS SMOKE ANTEATERS, NOT AS GOOD AS SMOKED SALMON
Al:
Welcome to the UCR local TV station, im Al Lewis and my collegue Jody Herman is beside me. What a great game for your Highlanders today! You saw it right here on Channel 93, unless of course you're on the north part of the campus in which case it may have faded into the PBS docu-drama "Shlomo the Kosher Penguin". Lets review the game shall we?
Jody:
Yes sirreeeebob your Highlanders opened up on all cylanders and scorched a good UC Irvine team 86-67. Get this- IN IRVINE"S Bren Events Arena! This team they beat was boasting a 4-0 record in the conference and a 8-3 total. It was advertised as a clash of the Gods, but the only man to show for the Anteaters was Ray West, the leading scorer in the conference at 19 a game. He dropped 16 in the first half alone, and added 8 in the second half. If you don't believe us, we've gotten Coach Payton to give us a lengthy synopsis via Telephone. Can You Hear Me Coach?
Payton: I can hear you. Well lets get it started shall we?
Jody: Go right Ahead, Mr. Payton.
Payton: well we were hitting our pregame Jumpshots and it carried on throughout the game. In 6 minutes we were up something like 18-12. They were playing agressive D and we took advantage as Steve converted another 3 point play. We were up 8 with 7 to go, when Ray West hit back to back treys to pull it to 2. Then we got the bonus and They had to lay off. It was easy from then on in to advance the lead.
Well, i thought i would be. We got it back up to six and then got that sweet kick out 3 by Schmidt to make it, um, 31-22. Then it was 33-23 and i was happy, but West went to the hole for a bucket, and then next possesion nailed his 4th 3 of the half. They got it close at 37-34 before we ran off six straight to end the half.
Five seconds into the second half West hit another three, at least i thought it was. The refs said foot on the line. I didnt complain.
A litttle later we went on an 8-0 run to make it 53-40. Then someone came into the gym and drained our energy like a science fiction novel. We let them cut it to five at the six minute mark. I called TO and um, gave the players a piece of my mind. Then we got 2 quick layups to make it 68-59. We were up 68-59 when Murray posted up and kicked it out to Thompson for a trey. That pretty much ended it. The Final was 86-67
Jody: Coach thanks, mind if we ask you a few Q's
Coach: Not if they are quick, i got a bus to catch.
Jody: What did you think of Ray West.
Coach: Absolutely Phenominal player. And only a Soph? i hope we have 2 quys who can guard him by the time hes a senior.
Jody: Have your expectations changed any for this years squad?
Coach: Why yes, actually they have. I think we can go undefeated in the Conference because we just destroyed the other good team in this conference on their own floor. I also think we should win our Conference tourney and maybe pull off a game in the NCAA's. Wha-? OH crud, we missed the bus, i gotta go, bye.
Jody: Thanks Coa- (phone goes dead)
Al:
I will finish our wrap-up and then we'll move on to the 45 cases of cheating found today.
Final: 86-67

10-3 UC Riverside @ 6-7 LBSU
At first i was very happy because i opened up 9-0. I figured, Im staying undefeated. but then i just flat out lost all intensity. A few minutes later they hit a 3 point play to make it 17-15, im still in the lead. A few minutes later we were trailing 25-21 and they were out-rebounding us 17-7. I brought in my starters and told them they werent coming out until they had a lead. It was 34-33 at the half.
A minute into the half Thompson got overly aggressive and well, he fouled out. My starters showed resilience i thought impossible from the likes of such "softies". We were up 70-64 with 3 and a half to go when i brought in My subs.
Final Score: 84-75

Note to Self:
Joe Williams was absolutely great tonight. I wonder if i should give him a start over Thompson vs. Idaho at home just to ruffle Thompson's feathers. He seemed to want to foul out just so he could get out of the game.
With this win UC Riverside moves into a tie with Utah State at 5-0 in-conference. However, overall Utah State is 9-4 to UCR's 11-3 record.
PS Utah State comes to The Raucous Arena in Riverside next Saturday, the 24th of January. At halftime the crowd will dedicate the court to Coach Payton, making him the second active coach to have his home court named after him. (Coach K, Duke Blue Devils)

Im starting J-Will and Benching Senior PG Eric Thompson because:
1. Eric needs to wake the heck up
2. My bench is too weak without Tripps on it
Idaho @ UC Riverside
This game started out by me missing a jumper but Chris Murray going up and throwing down a tip slam. Then Steve Grant makes 1-2 FTs and Chris puts that back too(7-0). Murray had 10 points and 10 boards less than 5 minutes into the game. With 7:48 to go it is 19-6 me. For five minutes i put on my traditional dissapearing act, and with 3 to go it was 27-20. Then Scott "I'm gonna shoot a" Tripplett nailed back to back 3s with a layup by their PG in between making it 33-22. Under a Minute to go he hits monster 3 ball off a pick (im talking JJ Reddick Deep)
At the Half: UCR 39 Idaho 28
When Steve Grant picked it up in the secon half, it was over in a flash. He dropped 21, Tripplett finished with 28 by sinking 6 3balls. Eric tossed another 2 from back there and finished with 13. Chris had 19.
Tripplett hit his 6th trey of the night at the buzzer to make it 100-52 (our first 100 point game)

Utah State University @ UC Riverside
Al: Welcome back to Highlander Highlights im Al Lewis and this is Jody Herman!
Jody: Today your beloved Highlanders eeked out a tough win over the Utah State Aggies 77-71. Al has a synopsis for you and then i get to interview Coach Payton on how it felt to get a win on the newly named "Malcolm Payton Court".
Al: Well during the pregame we talked about how much UCR would miss starting PF Rob Coles because of the Tremendous size that the Aggies boasted. Their PG is 5'10 but then u have 6'4 6'8 6'7 6'9. Anyway Coach Payton is still using Eric Thompson off the bench and is using him well in my oppinion. That bench was rather weak with J-Will and Schmidt coming off it.
On the first possesion of the game Joe Williams made a pretty little pull up jumpshot and then stole the ball and ran the break to perfection; hitting Scott Tripplett for an open 3 pointer which he drained easily. It was 11-4 in a flash and it looked like your Highlanders were going to run away with it. Except of course, if you are on the Northern Side of Campus, in which case it looked like your reception had completely faded out into Spanish Midget-Wrestling.
After 5 and a half minutes it was 21-12 and Chris Murray had 8 points and 6 boards. Thats when the Highlander subs came in and slowly beat our lead into the ground and let USU Pound its way back into the game.
The Buzzer Sounded with the score at UCR: 37 USU: 33
Tripplett had gone 1-8 from downtown. Murray had 10 points and 9 boards, Wesley Miller (SO PF) had 10 points and five boards.
Before stepping to the Podium to accept the dedication he handed an assistant coach a peice of paper with some sort of speach on it. The assistant took the team to the locker room, worriedly looking at the paper.
Scott Tripplett hit a pull up 3 and then before we knew i it was 44-33.
Murray was dominating, throwing down Monster Dunk after Monster Dunk. After a few of these it was 52-44. The subs came in and again were very ineffective letting them cut it to 58-56 with 6:10 remaining. Im sure Coach Payton had faith that they could put up a little to help them but it wasnt to be. It was 60-60 with five minutes to go. Coach called a timeout and brought in his starters. at the 3 minute mark it was 64-60. In 17 Seconds both teams threw it long several times to beat the presses and make it 68-64.
With 2:10 to go Darrell Jameson hit a huge turnaround J from the FT Line remeniscent of Christian Laetner's famous shot. 70-66 Then we got a stop and Jamesons man fell down so Darrell Took it coast to coast for the biggest jam ive ever seen. 72-66. 1:00 to go, backup (SR PG) Archie May hit a loooooooong 3 to make it 72-69. Your Highlanders ran the clock to 25 seconds before Jameson came up with another huge turnaround. May pushed it up, took a long 3, missed got his own board, kicked it out to Turner who hits a 3. OR DOES HE? nope rules the ref, foot on line. After this some good FT shooting won it for your Highlanders.

Jody: Thanks for Joining us Coach!
Coach Payton: Not a Problem Jody,
Jody: So how does it feel, sixteen games into your head coaching career and you already have a Court named after you.
Coach: To be honest im a little hesitant to accept, i mean, Coach K is the only other active coach and he coached for twenty years for that!
Jody: A valid Point, Do you feel this distracted your team at all.
Coach: I think it bothered our subs because they got to sit on the bench and think about it, while the starters just went in and got their hands dirty.
Jody: The real Q on everybody's mind is; When will Rob Coles return?
Coach: I have the pleasure of announcing that he will most likely return next week. Just in time for Cal-Coastside. (glances at watch) Oh Crud i gotta go have dinner, thanks for the interview Jerry- Jody- or whatever! (rushes off stage, knocking down own chair and Jody)

Highlanders defeat Greyhounds in Dogfight
Let it be known: no pun intended on the title, this was a battle. It just felt tough, no way around it. With 9:00 to go i was trailing 15-10. 2 minutes later Chris Murray hit 2 FT's to cap a 10-2 run, 20-17.
Chris came to play, as he battled for 24 points 17 boards and 2 blocks. He sat out the last 2 minutes to the game after taking an elbow to the mouth. He will not be allowed to practice tomorrow because he spat blood at a overly zealous fan.
With 3 minutes to go it was 32-29 i was trying to remain in the lead. However they ran off two quick buckets in a minute and made it 33-32. With 30 seconds left i was down 37-36 and held for the last shot; a jumper by Grant that clanked off the back rim.
At The Half: 37-36 Joe Williams 6 points 5 assists, Murray 10 points 9 boards, Steve Grant 12 points. "This game is tough," said a smiling Coach Payton,"We are gonna have to really outbattle them in this second half. This is the kinda game Mr. Murray likes, watch him." The big white kid from Groom Creek Arizona certainly dominated the paint today holding (JR C) James Butler to 2 points and 4 rebounds.
At the 12:15 mark i had run it off to make it 42-39. They got a tough J by (SR SF) Cory Goode and Scott Tripplett hit a kickout 3 to put me up 4. It looked like that might be the clincher. However, 2 minutes later it was 47-45 me. This set the stage for Scott "I'm Gonna Shoot a" Tripplett. He ht a 3 coming off a screen by J-Will. Then Joe stole the inbounds pass and fed it to Scott for a turnaround J. At the 8 minute mark Tripps came around a Grant screen to hit another 3. The definetive moment came when Trippy missed a 3 with 5 and a half to play. Murray went up, grabbed it, came down, threw his elbows around (knocking Butler to the floor) and threw down a ferocious one handed jam.

UCR stomps on tough CALC team in sloppy meeting
This play embodies my season:
Down 2 on our opening possesion, Coles cuts to the middle and catches a crisp pass, only to miss the jumper. Chris Murray grabs the ball off the rim and throws it down. The star misses, and Murray comes through. Coles showed rust as the next time down he got stuffed. 2 minutes in we look sluuuuuugish trailing to a feisty Cal Coastside team 8-4.
At the 8:00 mark it was clear that Murray was determined, but not particularly effective in this here first half. He had 4 points on 1-4 from the field and a pair of FT's, however he did have 3 boards.
It was 18-12 at that point. A minute later we were trailing by 9 (21-12). With seven minutes to go Murray grabbed another errant shot and threw it down. He then stuffed Kelly Bennett (JR C) and threw it downcourt to Eric for a layup. Sidenote: He held Bennett to 0 points and 6 rebounds. . Eric stole the inbounds pass, and layed it in. Then stole it and fed Trippy for a 3. This made it 21-21. Eric stole it again and fed Grant for his only bucket of the game. With under a minute to go im clinging to a 28-27 lead and then smoke up an 8-0 run to finish the Half.
Half: 36-27} Thompson had 8 points and 3 steals, Coles had 6 points, Sam Schiffner grabbed 8 boards, Scott had 8, and Chris went into the lockers with 6 and 4. "We really need to concentrate if we want to put this game away, its way to sloppy," said a worried Coach Payton.
Barely a minute into the second half Tripps hit a 3 while coming off a brutal Coles screen. 39-29. Coles went down, grabbed the board and strangely went coast to coast instead of outletting it. He went up, was hacked, and got it to fall. He sank the FT 42-29, ballgame over Highlanders win! we built the lead up with O'rebounds and kept it with D'Rebounds. The only thing Coach Payton could complain about was,"We had way to many dumb TO's today. It was just silly."

Anyway Tulsa is 15-5 and looking good. My toughest stretch schedule wise is at the end of February, when i go 2 Idaho then have back to back games the next to days at home. Dan Patrick: Welcome to Sportscenter. On the Program tonight? We have our Budweiser Hot-seat contestant, Coach of the Big West forerunner, Malcolm Payton. As we complete our 10 part series on Mid-majors, youll find that Coach Payton has some interesting views on recruiting, offense, and Big West POTY so far, Chris Murray. Stuart Scott reports.
*******
Scott: Here i am with Malcolm Payton. Malcolm nice of you to be here.
Coach: Thanks for having me stuart.
Scott: How have you turned this team around. Im not saving the best for last, howdja do it?
Coach: Um, we work hard in practice, we play the game intelligently, with a lot of intensity, and you can make up for a lack of talent if you play like we do.
Scott: Have you ever had problems motivating the team this year?
Coach:[Laughing] No actually i have trouble calming them down. We are playing schools ive never heard of and i say "Now we're playing University of Pacific today" and they'll be banging on the lockers and screaming and im thinking
if i let them out this way they could kill someone. I have to calm them down and get them to play under control.
Scott: Tell us about Chris Murray.
Coach: Well for those of you who don't know, he is our 6'11 center. He is leading the conference in rebounding with 13 a game i believe. The day i got the job in mid July i called him at his house in Arizona. I told him i had watched clips of him last year as a freshman and was stunned at how slow he was. I told him he was in pathetic shape. He drove over from Arizona, which is a couple hours, and started lifting and running and working on rebounding technique all summer. I thought if he could get a bunch of rebounds a game we could go to Thompson and Jameson for scoring. However Grant and him have taken the leadership roles on this club.
Scott: Will you be back next year?
Coach: I think so, I won't deny I've sent applications this year to some bigger schools, not powerhouses mind you but teams of Valpraiso, St. Johns, Rutgers standards. But if I've told my players if we win a game in the NCAA's i wont leave em for the Kansas Jay-Hawks, and i intend to keep that promise.
Scott: You were an assistant at Grinnell. What is that like?
Coach: Well Grinnell has the most random strategy I've ever seen. They push the ball up and fire up as many 3's as possible. Then every 35 seconds they bring a 5 in there. It was tough, but i decided not to try to run that here.
Scott: How's your recruiting going?
Coach: You'd be surpised, we have what looks like 3 top 1000 guys that will be definetely joining us next year. Success breeds success i guess
Scott: Malcolm Payton, You are off the Budweiser Hot-Seat
Coach: Phew!

Earlier tonight, Both LBSU and UCI crushed their oponents, UCI scoring 97 points and leapfrogging UCR in the scoring lead for the conference
15-3 (9-0) UCR @ 6-12 (4-6) CSUF
Boy did the UCR boys start off badly tonight!! 2 TO's in their first 3 possessions, it looked like a long day for Coach Payton. Trailing 2-0 Chris Murray stuffed Diondre Palmer (JR SG) and Darrell "Rim Rocker" Jameson threw down a sick 360 reverse jam and was fouled. He nailed the FT. Then he steals the inbounds pass, Could they turn the game around? Well, Jameson tossed it out of bounds and they got a 3 point play on the ensuing possession so, NO!
With 10:00 to go we were really struggling, leading 7-6. Chris hit a jam and was fouled, but then he missed the FT. Coles grabbed it and did the exact same thing! Murray grabbed this rebound and once again Jam and a Foul. This time he hit the FT. Those were the only two misses from the line for UCR tonight.
With 6:30 to go they foul Steve Grant. It's Bonus Time! He hits the 1+1. Get this, its 16-12. We are shooting 6-16 from the field. Thats 37.5%. Thats SAD!
Scott Tripplett catches the halfcourt toss and takes 1 dribble before throwing up a Marbury 3, and making it. The Horn sounds.
At The Half: 35-29.
Im shooting 40%. They are shooting an obscene 58%. We are 8-10 FTs. Murray has 9 and 4. Steve has 6-4. And Coles looked good with 5 boards.
The second half was a different story scoring wise. They opened it up promptly with a backcourt. Steve got to the rack for a jam. He steals the inbound pass and finds a cutting Chris Murray. They get it up for their first shot of the half and Murr stuffs Cliff "Green" Gables! We run it up the floor and find Steve alone under the basket for a thundering jam that silenced the faithful in Titan Gym. A stop comes quickly before Darrell grabs a pass and gets his second 3 point play of the game. Cliff Gables got his 3rd foul on that one. He was a non-factor because of foul trouble today. We get another stop. Eric comes through big with a huge trey to end the game. Can you picture the momentum meter after this?? We basically played around with subs the last half of the second half, which ended with them on an 8-0 run.

UCR CRUSHES 49ERS INTO GROUPS OF 7
This game was a tale of two halves. In the first half we struggled mightily, it appeared we would be upset badly. LBSU came in pressuring us man-to-man and we were so slow that we trailed 7-6 in 2 minutes. In the first five minutes we had an obscene 6 turnovers. Halfway through the first half we trailed 23-16. Skip ahead to 3 minutes where Ousmane Schmidt gets a fastbreak layup to cap a 10-0 run and turn the game around 32-30.
At The Half: 38-34 UCR winning.
Murray only 6 points (2-7) and 7 boards. Jameson had eight. Schmidt and J-will both had 6. Coles had 4 points and 5 boards.
Opening Possesion Second Half? Layup and a foul by Murray. Murray goes to the Line and clanks it. Coles grabs it and puts it back. No good. Murray picks it up and hits on a nice hook. We get a stop and then Grant gets an AND 1! We would rattle off sixteen unanswered points like this in 3 minutes and there it was.
Final Score: 100-54

This game was a blowout. I pride myself on coming in and not taking anybody for granted. And this was no exception. A note though: Chris Murray had an offday on the boards, he just couldn't beat anybody up. It was sad. Coming into the game he was second in rebounds (in country). He finished with ten, I dunno if he'll drop or not, but fair warning.
Anyway with 7:10 to go the game got out of hand, 24-14. Murray could score but not so much rebound, with 9 points and 4 rebounds. This is brief, but, there ya go. At the half it was 38-30. To my shame, we lost all intensity in the last few minutes. Chris had 13 points and 5 rebounds. Jameson had 10. Grant had 9 and 4. My last highlight i have written down is Eric Thompson hitting a 3 pointer to make it 64-48 with 8 minutes to go. They finished it off on an 8-0 run.

18-3 UCR @ 12-9 USU
You may remember that the last time these 2 teams played it was billed as the battle between the class of the Big West (not an impressive distinction, but still). This time around however the only thing at stake were two visiting recruits and the chance of falling to fourth in the Big West standings. The State men had nothing to win or lose, and for UCR this was just another easy conference win.
Unfortunately, nobosy told State that. They fastbreaked themselves to an 8-2 run. A disgusted Coach Payton called a timeout. An outburst was expected but Coach Payton calmly reiterated what he told them before every game. "He reminded each of us of our parts in the man offense. He reminded us of how our press was supposed to work, and said to remember to get back on defense." Said Chris Murray after the game. It seemed to work as they pressed their way to get a 10-0 run. We traded buckets and 4 point runs until there were four minutes to go, up 26-24. With the help of a pair of 3's by Scott "I'm Gonna Shoot A" Tripplett we went into a 8-0 run. They threw up a 3 and got a Indy-Syracuse moment, when their center grabbed it off the rim and jammed it down to make it 37-32 at the half.
At The Half: 37-32. Chris had 6-7, Trippy 9, Jameson 6. We returned to TO prominence with only 3.
The starters seemed to relax before this half as USU came out strong again with 6 more unanswered to go up by one before the USU faithful at the DG Smith Spectrum in Utah could blink. However the State club was simply overmatched and despite a valiant effort, UCR pulled away in the end to win 85-77.

UCR @ Tulsa
The Biggest game of the whole year has come and gone and I can't say I'm dissapointed with the result. A 92-79 victory at Tulsa, das solid. After the win i was featured as the 27th RPI team in the whole nation, but the best part is yet to come, I will tell when i finish the post.
As the game loaded i was struck by how similar the two teams stats really were. The game's intensity had me on the edge of my seat from the first tipoff to the last horn.
We opened up 4-0 just to see them return the favor- and more, going up 6-4.
9:35 Do we have an upset? Looks like it. Its 14-8 UCR and Coach Payton cracked a smile for the first time this season. However, 2 minutes later Tulsa capped an 8-0 run to make it 16-14.
Sam "I am" Schiffner had the half of his life as he finished the first Stanza with a team leading 11 points. He wouldn't play in the second.
With 1:52 to go it was 35-32 before the Phenomenal Frosh (Demario Hayes) backup PG from Tulsa entered the Star Senior's shoes and like his superior, burned UCR, nailing one of Tulsa's five threes to tie the game. He would hit another at the buzzer to give Tulsa its second lead of the night. 42-39
At Half: 42-39 TULSA.
Murray was outskilled by FR PF Thom Faulkner but hardly outmanned finishing the 1st half with 4 points and 9 rips. Steve had 8 and Schmidt 6. Star Tulsa PG Quemont Goode (and good he was) had 8 in the first, to go with Faulkners 12 on 6-6 shooting. We were out TO'd in the first UCR:10 TULSA:9.
With 11:21 to go Jameson threw down one of his many highlight reel jams (kid got hops) to go up 51-46. A few more great plays consecutively by Murray and Grant made it 55-46 and upset was at hand again. But, Again Tulsa refused to go away, as Q. Goode hit 3 and then completed a 3 Point play. 2 more jams by Faulkner and it is a 10-0 run and a 1 point lead for the Golden Hurricanes.
It was back n forth until at 5 minutes with it all square at 65, Coach Payton relieved his beleguered Subs (who had held the ship since 9 minutes) with his Fresh starters, who would take over the show.
For the next few minutes our press would click as the hazy vision of Tired Hurricanes was indiscriminant in whether they passed to a home or away Uniform.
Up 5 with 2 to go. Thompson sinks 2 clutch FT's steals the inbounds hits a J, Taps another inbound which Jameson catches and jams. Ballgame. The last few minutes are FT's

You went and made a name for yourself, didn't ya?!!!
Tough decisions, in my opinion.
I would be swaying towards St. John's (because of Big East conference), and due to the fact of recruiting the inner-city kids.
Or maybe....DePaul ?...........those are great opportunities, man.
I'll be on the edge of my seat...to see how this one plays out, River.

Great point, but to go to NYC after Southern California would require even more, like a thick, home-knit wool sweater, that'd be appealing to recruits... and earmuffs too... orange furry ones......
Anyway back to my game vs. Idaho.
UCR @ Idaho
Playing the Division Champs after getting squashed like bugs in your first meetings, your sole job is to lie down and take the beating. Someone should have told Idaho, but then again, that'd require traveling to Idaho, and well, who wants to do that?
However nobody told them to aim for the basket when shooting either so they opened up with 3 consecutive airballs, I've never seen anything like it. The Coach called TO, and informed the players of their mistakes.
The Vandals returned with a vengeance and took a 17-10 lead to the 8:00 mark, when the officials called a TO. A tired looking NBA league official, fresh off a plane from Detroit, ran over to the Head Coach of Idaho, whispered in his ear, and took off.
"He informed us that we are not allowed to beat UCR because they are the vastly superior team," Said a bewildered Coach Mark O'Neil, "Also he said that we weren't allowed to use Rasheed Wallace or Mike James."
Maybe he said not to guard Scott Tripplett because at that moment he came into game and had the game of his career hitting 8 3pts over the next 9 minutes, (1st minute of second half).
At the Half: 41-30 UCR over Idaho. Good Stat: 7-11 from downtown as opposed to 2-4 for Idaho. Bad Stat: Losing TO battle 7-3
POTH: Chris Murray 12 points 8 rebounds
Keys to lead: Scott "im gonna shoot a" Tripplett 21 points on 7-11 shooting
The second half was a bit of scare for 3 minutes, when they had the lead hovering at 8, With our press so ineffective it scared me. Then Joe Williams and Billy Brand entered the game and the two speedsters wreaked havoc on the poor Idahodians, getting it back to 10, then 15, then 20, then 30. J-Will also burned them when they went into man-to-man with 8 to go.
Final Score: 86-56

CALC @ UCR
I can sum this game up in one play. Darrel Jameson gets the ball in the corner and penetrates shoots a layup, misses, goes up himself and slams it down off the rim. We'd miss one oppurtunity and it would work out for the best. We would build a ten point lead and with about five minutes left i brought in Tripplett and we played a game called: HOW MANY 3's CAN U MAKE?
Answer: A lot. He hit five in the last five minutes and six in the first six minutes of the half, tack on a dunk and u get his 35 points for the night.
At The Half: I didnt write the score but i was up around twenty.
POTH: Chris Murray 7 points 14 rebounds

Pepperdine is a definite possiblility,
the only school out of the four ive ruled out is Winthrop (just gives me a bad feeling, as i dont remember them dancing for a long time, though ive probably just forgotten)
St. Johns- I've said this a million times, Big East, NYC. Nuf Sed
Pepperdine- West coast, big school dances a ton. Sort of scared of having to play the zags that much though. I went there for a looksee a few years ago when my sister was looking at Colleges and they had a giant cross in their front yard. Coach Payton isnt especially religious, itd be weird

1. I just finished my game with SBDMSU (i had a senior day, it was nice) i will post it tonight
2. J-Will has fled to a professional team in Spain. This happened before the game with SBDMSU. The game was played without him, and afterwards they held a tryout to see who would replace him. Orien Cox, a 5'9 152 pound freshman Economics major with wicked 3ball touch got the job and is expected to play a huge role in this teams run to success.
(In actuality J-Will disapeared and was replaced by a blank spot and a clone of Ousmane Schmidt. I moved the clone into the blank spot and it was like the 80's movie Wierd Science, out popped a 73 freshman whos 40 from downtown. Im okay with it.)

Anyway the game ive tried to post the past few days...
SENIOR DAY IN RIVERSIDE
Starting Lineup,
PG Ousmane Schmidt
SG Eric Thompson
SF Scott Tripplett
PF Rob Coles
C Chris Murray
I started my 3 seniors b/c its there last home game and im playing SBDMU, so i figured it wouldnt last long.
Fittingly, in the game which was supposed to be a tribute to the seniors, Scott Tripplett did what he had done all year from downtown. On the opening tip he hit a pullup 3 to get the boys started.
The senior citizens would play the first four minutes of the half and the last 3 minutes.
In a day all about seniors, Soph Center Chris Murray snuck under the radar and gave one of his best first half performances, with 14 points and 11 rebounds.
At The Half: 37-24
POTH: Chris Murray 14-11
Key Players:
Scott Tripplett 9 points (guess how)
Darrell Jameson 8 points
Key Stats
Nothing Spectacular
In the second half the seniors played the first five minutes, and the last 3:12.
With 2:43 left, Eric Thompson steals his final pass on Malcolm Payton Court. With 2:12 to go, Ousmane Schmidt hit has last swirling, twisty, layup in Riverside. And with 43 ticks left on the clock, Scott Tripplett sent the Raucous Riverside Faithful into hysterics for the final time, draining a long 3. Then one by one, i subbed them out.
Ousmane Schmidt came out, shook Coach Payton's hand, and sat down between Sam Schiffner and Percy Leadbetter. Eric Thompson gave an emotional Payton a hug, slapped the hands of several fans behind the bench, and sat down on the end of the bench. Finally Scott Tripplett came off the court, to the wild cheers of the Highlander faithful. He went right past Coach Payton hugged the mascot, and ran a lap around the sideline, slapping the hand of every fan in the front row, before sitting down in between to cheerleaders.

UCR Wins tough battle with CSN 77-61
Two more games to go for the surprising Highlanders, who, with a win on saturday vs Pacific (8-17), look to enter the RPI top 25 in next week's polls before the start of the conference tournaments.
CSN was outmanned today but they fought mightily. Through the first four minutes they held a good Highlander team to 10 points and trailed by only 2.
The UCR team struggled from three today but with five minutes left Orien Cox hit his first three pointer since he played JV basketball in grade school. That bomb put the UCR team up 21-16. The would extend the lead to as many as ten but the Matadors came on strong and left the Highlanders clinging to a three point lead at half.
"I think it was good for us," said an optimistic Coach Payton, "Most small conference teams that make it to the tournament have walked over conference oponents, and its important for us to get in some tougher game experience."
At Half: 32-29
POTH: Chris Murray struggled but managed 10 points and 6 boards
What The-?!!!? POTH: Scott Tripplett 3 points on a layup and a FT (1-3 from line) (0-5 from 3)
The surprising thing about the half was that CSN had 23 TO's. I'd say about twenty of them were unforced. They through the ball out of bounds, stepped out of bounds, went backcourt, and lobbed the ball right at Murray a few times.
In the second half Chris Murray finished off a double double with 4 rebounds and a bucket in the first 1:30.
With 11 minutes left the Highlanders built the lead up to 13 (44-31). It had helped that in three minutes Jameson had dropped 10.
At 9:30 Coach Payton took a risk. Up 49-33 he brought in Cox and Tripplett to try to finish them off with threes. The move backfired as the Matadors grabbed the long clankers and rode the break to an 8-0 run. Finally Scott Tripplett got one to fall.
By pounding it in to Sam Schiffner and letting Steve Grant take the ball to the basket, The Highlanders built the lead up to 12 with four minutes left. The starting guards returned to reunite with the forwards and create the "Super Starters". Coach Payton made it clear to them that he wanted them to just beat up CSN and end this game before they made another run.
The CSN guys made a valiant attempt, cutting it to 9 with 1:30 to play, but had to begin fouling and nobody on the Highlanders miss with regularity, so the Highlanders put the game away.
Final Score:77-61
POTG: Chris Murray 15 points 16 rebounds (6-19 shooting)
Key Players:
Eric Thompson 10 points 3 dimes
Steve Grant 10 points 6 rebounds
Scott Tripplett 17 points
Darrell Jameson 16 points (14 in second half)

UCR Highlanders @ UOP Tigers
HIGHLANDERS HEAD FOR HIGHLANDS, WATCH TIGERS DROWN IN FLOOD
The Highlanders certainly pulled snatched a victory from the jaws of defeat in this game, and Soph Center Chris Murray attributes it to a halftime speach by Malcolm Payton and a tremendous bench play, "We had to score in the beginning of the second half, and Coach, uh, let us know. Props to Percy though, he stepped up."
The two teams started off dead even, tied at twelve after four minutes. Chris Murray took advantage of a weak interior defense, scoring ten of our first twelve.
With 6:39 to go, we trailed by 5, 24-19, and Coach Payton called a timeout. Both Darrell Jameson and Scott Tripplett had two fouls and Thompson was so ineffective it hurt. So Coach Payton went small, with Orien Cox and Ousmane Schmidt (5'9 and 5'10 respectively) at the guards. Cox couldn't spit into the ocean today, maybe the mean Pacific crowd had an effect on the quiet freshman.
With 5:30 to go, Ousmane picked up his second foul, and i had to bring in Eric at shooting guard. Then about three minutes later, he picked up his 2nd foul, we were trailing 30-27 at the time and on an 8-0 run. Coach Payton saw that not only was Eric in Foul trouble, but Orien Cox was about to die. He relieved them both and had Billy Brand at SG and Percy Leadbetter at PG. Percy got a bucket and a block before the half, but we were still trailing.
At Half: UOP: 38 UCR: 33 (JUST HORRIBLE)

Decided to keep Leadbetter in, hes 6'5 i hoped he could cause some havoc in the backcourt.
Well, dear Percy did more than that, getting two quick buckets, feeding Coles for two more, and on the later one he was fouled. He missed the FT but Chris put it back, they broke the press but Percy came away with it eventually and threw it down and just like that it was 45-38 and the tide had turned, and the T-I-Double Guh-Ers were stuck in the sand. Oh yeah, this took a minute and a half.
With 7:35 remaining, UCR in control 63-51, Eric and Darrell came back in. They ran the team into the ground in the next five minutes, allowing this feisty team to cut it to 77-72. Payton did the only thing he could think of, he brought in the sweet shooting senior Scott Tripplett, who, with 1:25 left, would make it 80-72 by ripping the cords on a wide open three pointer.
They would begin to foul shortly, I brought in my "Free Throw Lineup" and did the thing i felt would prepare my team for the post-season. I gave the ball to Orien Cox. He responded by swishing 6-6 for his only six of the game.
Final Score: 89-74
POTG: Chris Murray 31 points 20 rebounds 4 blocks 2 assists
Key Players:

Article Title: UCR desecrates Vandals 82-55
In the second round of the Big West conference tournament, the #1 seed UCR Highlanders defeated the #9 seed Idaho Vandals. The Highlanders will advance to the semi's and play the #5 CSU Fullerton Titans on Friday, March 12th. In the other semifinals, the #2 UCI Anteaters will play the #3 Utah State Aggies.
This game started and it appeared that the Vandals, a dozen centuries removed from destroying the powerful Roman empire, were out to play spoiler again. However superior bench play and coaching won this one for UCR, even without last year's Big West freshman of the year, Steve Grant, who had only 1 point.
Two minutes in the Idahodians were actually in the lead, 6-4, when Darrell Jameson picked up his second foul and had to go to the bench. Out came Scott Tripplett, and for the amount of flair he showed us today, there very well may have been Triplets out on the floor, as he spurred the team on a 10-0 run and ripped the cords four out of his first five times from three, sending the Staples Center crowd into hysterics
Before Idaho could blink (collectively, as a state, it takes a while) there was 8 minutes to go and the score was a resounding 22-8, the Highlanders having gone on an 18-2 run.
For th rest of the first half the highlanders toyed with their Idahodian counterparts, and finished it at 46-24.

CSF vs. UCR (Game Recap)
This game started and ended slowly for the Highlanders, although that didn't matter in the outcome. UCR missed their first four shots, before feeding a hungry Chris Murray 3 consecutive times. He maneuvered around the basket and threw down 3 earth shattering jams, which gave UCR a 6-4 lead, 2 minutes into the game.
UCR went to the two three ballers (Cox-Tripplett) about midway through the first half in an attempt to end the game but both were ineffective and so we finished the highscoring half up 40-32.

POTH: Chris Murray 12 points 10 windexes
Key Players:

With 12 Minutes to play in the 2nd half, Cliff "Green" Gables hit a short hookshot to cut the lead to 44-42. However, senior Scott Tripplett and freshman Orien Cox picked a good time to show up, as Orien drained a 3 and Scott hit 3 triples. The lead stayed at about nine until with two minutes left CSF had to foul, and Orien Cox went 6-6 from the line.

Big West Finals
Selection Sunday
Staples Center
A river of champagne is flowing in Riverside today as the country's darlig finished off a great tournament by defeating an intimidating UCI squad 91-80. The brackets will be announced on the ESPN selection show at 7 Eastern, 9 Pacific. Already a top 25 team, UCR has assured itself of a berth that not even the cruelest selection commitee could rob them of, an automatic one. Coach Payton is hosting a party to watch the selection show at the Riverside Cafe tonight, starting promptly at 8:30.
During the Pre-game introductions, one could not help but notice how every single player on UCI had a height advantage on UCR. The organized cheering section Riverside brought with them began chanting "MVP, MVP, MVP!" when Chris Murray was announced.
It looked as if size would matter early on as on the very first play, as 7'1 giant (C) Mensah Fuller drew a charge on Eric Thompson. UCI would move the ball up the floor very against the UCR press very efficiently and dumped it to Mensah "basket's gonna get" Fuller for an easy jam. UCR struggled to break the UCI press and UCI stole it and fed it to Fuller who again stuffed the basket full. The first 4 UCR possessions would lead to TO's, before the Highlanders broke the press and fed Rob Coles for a solid, two fisted jam. UCR's press would began to rattle James Temple, UCI PG, into several hundred TO's. Darrell Jameson was the benificiary of this high-octane style of play as he'd steal it and fly to the hoop sending sparks out onto the crowd with his Spicy-Flavored Jams (thats a nasty thought), getting twelve points in about 5 and a half minutes to put his team up 22-12.
UCI however would finish the half on a 9-0 run, cutting it to 42-35, mostly thanks to their Soph SG Ray West, who had 15 in the first half alone.
At Half: 42-35
POTH: Chris Murray 6 points 12 boards
Key Players:
Darrell Jameson 15 points
Rob Coles 6 points 2 rebounds
Scott Tripplett 12 points (guess how he got 'em)
In the second half, the Staples Center crowd witnessed an explosion not seen since Coach Payton last tried to cook his own lunch. With 9:16 left, UCI was stunned, staring up at the scoreboard in disbelief, 65-46

A banquet table is set in front of the room, above which is a small TV showing Bracketology 101 on ESPN. Coach Payton again sits nervously at head of table, waiting for brackets to be disclosed.
Scott Tripplett: Shut UP and show us the Brackets Vitale!
Digger (on TV): I know what you guys are thinking; Shut UP and show us the Brackets Vitale! Well, here they are...
crowd quiets anxiously as everyone engages in the scavenger hunt for UCR's name on the television screen. Suddenly Chris Murray leaps into the air, screaming I FOUND US! and effectively blocking everyone in the room from seeing what hes pointing too. A few seconds of scrambling later, everybody in the room knows, and erupts. UCR has drawn an 11 seed in the Midwest bracket, and is playing Wake Forest in the first round
Malcolm Payton, however, remains worried,
Ousmane Schmidt: Coach, Wassadeal?
Coach Payton: Schmidttie, Its a long bus ride to the Bradley Center!

THE DREAM SEASON ENDS
For Wake Forest
Well The surprise of the tournament came last night, as #11 seed UCR knocked off #6 Wake Forest in a heart breaking 2 point victory. UCR will play Wisconsin, who eeked out a one point victory over #14 CSU Sacramento (one of the 3 teams to beat UCR this season). The matchup will be on CBS at 9:30 Eastern Time.
The beginning of this game was a series of runs, 6-0, 8-0, 9-0, 4-0. UCR blew out red hot to a 6-0 lead in a minute 15. They came back and took an 8-6 lead however. The highlanders were like an inverse Therma-care heat rap, hot and then cold. They hit 7-8 in the beginning, followed by 0-8. At the end of this runathon it was 15-12, and Cox would hit a 3, 18-12. Then UCR would miss 7 in a row to make it 18-16 before Orien hit another one, 21-16. This was a streaky first half, with the favorite on top at the end.
At Half:
Wake: 40
UCR: 37
POTH: Chris Murray 3 points 9 rebounds
Key Players:
Darrell Jameson 10 points
Percy Leadbetter 9 points
Orien Cox 6 points
Key Stat: Wake Forest shooting 60%
Eric Thompson may have sensed his time was coming to an end in Riverside, as he had only 2 points in the entire first half, but scored 10 in the first 6 minutes of the second half. When the smoke cleared the score was 55-53 UCR.
With 7 minutes to go, it was 60-55 Wake Forest on a seven-0 run. Chris Murray why he won the Conference POTY and was first team all conference. Posting up on 6'9 backup center Marcus Howard near the right block, Chris spun to his left into the lane and threw down a nasty dunk, and to add insult to injury, Chris Paul had come behind him and hacked him while he dunked, and Chris buried the FT like his gramma.
UCR down 62-61 with 3:37 left, Orien Cox shows why he beat out more phsycally able ballers during walkon tryouts by nailing a 3 with a whooping Chris Paul in his face. 64-62.
With 1:10 to go UCR was down 70-66 and it appeared the Highlanders were all out of miracles. But Scott Tripplett, with nothing on his stamina meter, gasping for air, two men in his face goes up, and gets it swatted into his face, he recovers it and with one on the shot-clock, two guys in his face, five feet beyond the arc, a turnaround with his legs wagging in the air, Tripplett rips the cords, 70-69 Wake still up. They inbound the ball, Cox and Tripplett trap Paul in the corner and he tosses it up, Grant tips it down onto the ground and Rob Coles dives on it, TO!! Scott and Orien come out, replaced by the starters, and immediately throw up in the water cooler. Steve comes out, Leadbetter in, and Rob sits down for the midrange shooter Emerson Weaver. Coach Payton needs scorers out there, and Weave and Lead can hit what a tired Steve and a perfectly healthy Rob Coles cant hit. The ball is inbounded to Eric at halfcourt, and its clear theyve gone to man. Eric crosses Paul over, spins and nails a pull-up J to make it 71-70, UCR. Chris Paul pushes it up, under a minute to play. He takes one chance at ramming through our 2-3, but he cant pull it off, so he takes a long turnaround 3 pointer, Murray grabs the rebound, tosses it to Eric Thompson, and he pushes it up, 48 to go. Eric runs the clock until there is 20 seconds left and he drove to the basket, laying it in to make it 73-70 18.7 seconds left. Chris Paul looked in tears, so they gave it to SG Len Bullicer, who hit a game-tying 3 pointer with 10 seconds left. Eric gives it to Emerson Weaver, who hits a jumpshot to make it 75-73 with 2.5 seconds left. They throw it to halfcourt and call TO. 1.9 left. Inbound to Paul, turnaround 3 no good! Wake Forest is doomed to spend another spring studying under its own branches.

THE DREAM SEASON REALLY ENDS
For Wisconsin
The world is a weird place. Geniuses live on the street and morons live in the white house. Begatting is a sin in the Bible and yet plays a very prominent part in the creation. Wisconsin can shoot 60% and lose to a team that just made its first NCAA appearance in twenty years.
I had a strategy coming in to this game. I had devised my own way of scouting these guys (playing them in exhibition mode). I knew i couldnt stay with them. Mainly, my PG couldnt run the press if they arent tall and Orien at 5'9 and Ousmane at 5'10 arent exactly the second comings of Sampson and Bol. Basically i split the twins of triplets and started Scott at PG and Darrell at SG, my second team was eric @ PG and Orien @ SG. Ousmane never played. After a while Percy took Eric's spot. Anway my plan was to fire up threes at the first tip off, and dont stop until the buzzer sounded. I could win, but i could also lose by about six million.
Luckily Scott started the half red hot and rode that streak into the half, leading by 5, 36-31
At Half: 36-31
POTH: Scott Tripplett 21 points
Key Players:
Chris Murray 11 rebounds 0 points
Orien Cox 9 points
Darrell 4 points
In the second half we started out red hot yet again, and with 11:50 it was 49-33. With 8 minutes left it was a twelve point lead and i brought in the starters to run four courners, 58-46. With seven minutes left my favorite play happened. With the shotclock expiring Eric flipped it out to Steve Grant who nailed a 3 pointer. He stinx at 3s but its contagious i guess.

Michigan State won a prestigious award yesterday, WLT. World's Luckiest Team is annually given out to the team which eeks out the worst win over potentional Cindarellas. With one second left they made a mistake which cost them the season. Final Score: 65-64
Within a minute of the start of the game it was clear that Scott Tripplett was the oposite of a therma-care heat wrap Hot last game and cold in this one. He missed three 3's and Coach Payton yanked him, bringing in Eric Thompson, who fed Steve Grant for a jumper to tie it at 2.

Payton: Thank You Mr. Tannainai- Taniniainiaa- um Thanks Chris. As you all know, the Highlanders have had a great season, <Cheers From Audience> but all good things must come to an end. Since that end, i have been contacted by many schools such as Alabama, Pepperdine, Gonzaga, Winthrop, and Arkansas. You all know i wouldn't leave you unless the perfect job presented itself, but <groans from audience> You see, I've always wanted to be a pig, I mean Razorback, and these opportunities come once in a lifetime. I wish the Highlanders the best of luck in their future games, as long as they acknowledge that these will not be coached by me. I want you to know, I myself have hired my replacement, none other than my assistant Roy Israel. I've told him this and I'm telling you, if UCR ever wishes to play Arkansas, we will play UCR wherever, whenever this fine kids wish. Thank You,
So there you have it, Big West Coach of the Year is off to the SEC to try to win an even bigger title. UCR seems rather distraught about the loss, but a standing ovation takes place as Coach Payton walks off the stage, stops, turns, gives a hug to AD tanan- taniini- taninioino- to Chris, and walks off teary-eyed again.

Malcolm Payton Welcoming Comittee
November 6th 2004
AD Broyles: Ladies and gentleman, although we are sad to announce Mr. Heath has left us to fill the vacancy at Gonzaga, we do have the pleasure of announcing our new head coach, who, at twenty-one has already accomplished more than most coaches in America, led his team to the Sweet Sixteen, and came within .6 seconds and 1 point from heading to the elite eight, lets hear it for Coach Malcolm Payton and his Arkansas Razorbacks!
uproarious clapping, boosters attempt to swarm past reporters and rush stage, security not thrilled with idea
Coach Payton: Thanks for having me, everybody, im truly honored to be the coach of this great program. I see that most everybody has their media guide with them so i wont bother to announce the roster or the Schedule. But this conference is about questions so, lets hear em.
Reporter 1: Coach Payton, i have the schedule in my hands, and, well, this non-conference schedule is brutal, Pitt, FSU, Wake, Washington, Stanford, Virginia, Louisiana Tech, even your old mates at UCR have a top 25 birth (22), how will you fend off such an exhausting schedule?
Coach Payton: I believe your asking me how we'll play, well I'll tell ya. We don't have any true post threats offensively so We will fastbreak and play aggressive and live on the perimeter. The guards and forwards have tremendous backups who will allow us to go after everything on defense, my one worry is lack of depth under the basket. We dont have another center coming off the bench and the big man is Brad Abram, who, stand up brad, you can see, can fit through the holes in a flute. Anyway this isnt that tough a schedule, i expect, and me and Mr. Broyles agree on this one, we should win 60% of our games, at least.
Reporter 2: Coach, how have the players looked so far in practice?
Coach Payton: Its incredible, the talent these kids have, i know its odd to call them kids when some of them are older than me, but im just amazed with the things these guys can do with the ball. Did you know that Hawkins is as good a 3pt shooter as there is in the SEC? Yeah, hes a center, can u say matchup problems? Anyway, i think we should go back to the gym, im allowed 3 more hours of practice time this week and i wanna use it. Oh yeah, I wanna introduce everybody to my assistant coachs, Keith Gastel and Alan Gillingham. Also I'd like to invite everyone here to the "Ham it up, Karaoke party tonight at nine in the athletic center, yes I've received word that barry Terry and Barry Butler will be singing, "Ain't no stopping us now!"

Who rocks the proverbial socks- and who will be smelling them later on
Who is gonna contend come march, thats the question on every mouth in college basketball, and we at Espn.com are trying to answer First UP:

With Paul Davis and several other starters coming back, plus a Fine few Freshman including PF Ralph Doyle (a defensive stopper with a very good developing offensive game who will start at PF) and 6'9 SF Brooks Reynolds (tremendous offensive game (40 at 3's), rather foul-prone defender) and this team is primed at #3 in the nation to become national champs. Keep in mind this team has only 4 seniors and only one of which is a starter so we may see these guys around next year too.

Starting the season at #1 in the country with a frontcourt featuring Wayne Simien and David Padgett, this team will have no problem taking the Big Twelve in this reporters opinion. Frosh PG's Dwight Burrowes and Deon Coleman will provide a spark for the backcourt off the bench and Frosh PF Jan Rios of San Jose Costa Rica will keep Simien from overusing himself. Christian Moody grew 4 inches and dropped 9 pounds to come into this season at 7'0 233 and hopes to make an impact.
http://espn.starwave.com/i/ncaa/clubhouses/logos/41.gif
At #10 they seem to be a bit of a sleeper with Emeka Okafor returning as well as Ben Gordon, not to mention sensational Soph Charlie Villaneuva (i tried to spell it, howd i do?) and 3 point gunner Rashad Anderson. Fabulous Freshmam Clarence Fulton will try to make a name for himself backing up Ben Gordon. This squad is Loaded with Seniors and poised to make a final run, (they dont want to be outdone by their female counterparts)
http://espn.starwave.com/i/ncaa/clubhouses/logos/8.gif
The Ultimate Sleeper is the Pigs from Arkansas. Despite pigs in Arkansas actually sleeping quite a bit, this team is severely underated. The only one of these teams to play yet this year, the Razorbacks annihilated the UMKC 'Roos (report soon to be posted) and proved several things:
1. David Hawkins the most versatile center in the SEC (3-8 from 3pt)
2. Antoine Carmichael is for Real
3. Malcolm Payton is a very good coach
They looked sloppy, as all teams do in the opener, but Coach Payton's team played heady basketball which helped them finish off the Roos. With three top one hundred freshman, this team (who arent in the others category) will be in the Hunt and my prediction is at least Elite Eight, which is where Coach Payton should have been last year.
Stay tuned for Part 2,

Driving Car-Michael leads the Pigs to an easy victory over the Friars
In the Second Round of the Kush Pre-Season Invitational, a round which featured such upsets as Vermont over Wake Forest, the Razorbacks would have none of that, defeating NC A&M handily, 88-46. They will advance to play Vermont in the Semi-Finals tomorrow.
The game started with first year Arkansas Coach Malcolm Payton's team showing their inexperience in the 21 year old's system. It was 17-10 with the heady Friars in the lead five minutes into the game. A dunk by Lyle Morris, another by the Dunk Hawk (Duncan Hawkins) and a 3 ball from way behind the arc by Eddie Morris bought the game dead even, 17-17 with 7:20 to go in the first Stanza.
With five minutes left the Coach Payton pulled a little white bunny out of his hat, with what he calls the "White Bunny Frontcourt" because they are "So little and quick". It featured reserve PF Brad Abram and starting SG Bernie Jacobs. With the score 24-19 in favor of the NC A&M Friars, the 'Backs went into a 1-3-1 defense, citing a streetballing coach of the Columbia Lions, Donny "Flashlight" Jackson, as his inspiration, saying "it aint no thing but a chicken wing on a string from burger king".
A chicken wing on a string from Burger King it may have been (that sorta rhymes too), but it worked as when the Friars scored next it was 32-26 with a minute and half to go, stopping a 16-0 by the Pigs.

Come from behind victory turns into blowout as Razorbacks go to 3-0
The Razorbacks were shocked last week when D. Sine Kush (founder of Kush Pre-Season Invitational) cancelled the tournament due to the "loss of realistic layup graphics" and showed some of that shock in the first half of their game last night against the Huskies of Washington.
The Huskies, playing in their first game of the year, were led into battle by 5'9 sparkplug Nate Robinson, and were led well, jumping out to a 13-2 lead before the hogs could blink their collective eye. However Coach Payton burned a timeout and at the 9:00 mark it was 14-10, Washington clinging to their once volumnous lead. By the six minute mark it was 17-16 Washington and both teams were in the bonus. In the next 3 minutes and fifteen seconds WASH would go on a 9-0 run which would only be halted by a Brad Abram putback. 26-18. Both teams caught fire in the last two minutes of the half and Charlie Eldridge hit a buzzer-beating 3 bomb to bring the score to...

The second half however was a different story. When asked how he completed such an incredible turnaround, Coach Payton replied, "We did some Yoga, ate some Yogurt, read some stuff about Yoda, you know, basketball stuff." Anyway, it didnt start out lookin like they were using the force at first (Bad Star Wars Joke haha) as the Dunk Hawk picked up his 4th foul with 10:28 left. However two minutes on the dot from that moment, a gasping Antoine Carmichael pulled up and chucked a 3 with the giant hands of Nate Robinson in his face. SWOOSH! its a 9-0 run and its 48-47, ARK with its first lead. Eddie Morris comes in and within 3 minutes gets himself 2 3's and a 3ball which he missed but was fouled and hit the FT's. Finally with 5:00 left and the score 60-53, Eddie hit another to end the game.

Malcolm Payton, 21, the "best recruiting acquisition in college basketball", who signed a 3-year deal at a rumored 1.5-1.7 a year, has been rumored to be in discussion with four of the best basketball schools in the country. Duke, Uconn, North Carolina and Arizona have all expressed interest in luring the former Grinell College dropout into their programs for a variety of reasons (Lute Olsen has announced this will be his last season, Roy Williams has had several conflicts with youngsters McCants, Felton and May, Jim Calhoun is looking forward to a healthy retirement of suffering with the sox, and Coach K claims he would like to step up to the AD position someday when he decides the on-court action is too much).
http://www.jamsarts.com/animated/people/peo-basketball_coach.gif Coach Payton Coaching during practice
Coach Payton has not responded to RR's phone calls, and rumor has it he spent last night celebrating his win over Washington with an evening out at a Velvet Revolver concert, where he was treated to a meeting with three members of his favorite band Guns N' Roses (Matt Sorum, Slash and Duff McKagan).
Arkansas claims that they are not aware of any such conduct from their head basketball coach, but pig fans beware, next year there could be a third skipper at the helm in three years.

"You’ve been Chickenhawked!" Antoine Carmichael drops a pass
past FR Guard Boomer Smithson, en route to 13 assists
The Hogs gave their fans a scare last night against UCR, as the Highlanders took their SEC foes to overtime before the hogs could put together a string of buckets long enough to hold off the boys from Riverside. Arkansas will now head home were they will play the 2nd and 3rd of next month at home vs. Buffalo and San Francisco the next day a Friday, before traveling to Tallahassee to take on the Seminoles.
If there was any animosity towards Coach Payton when he entered the court, none of it was showed, as the fans cheered him loudly, in fact giving him a standing ovation, before sitting down to boo his players. Coach Roy Israel shook hands with him and held a short conversation, in which, according to Coach Payton, Roy lamented about his loss to Kansas, and Coach Payton gave him a very hard time about not starting Chris Murray, NCAA leading rebounder and Big West Player of the year last year. Coach Payton talked to Chris for a long time before having a few laughs while shooting some hoops during warm-ups with Brand, Weaver, Cox, Jameson, and Grant, and getting boxed out devotely by Rob Coles. The funny thing was, how little it seemed to bother the Arkansas players, who happily chose the time to skip warmups and chat with the Riverside mascot, the now unemployed Riverside booster by the name of Scott Tripplett.
When the game started, however, both teams were all business. The only player that the No-Warmups ordeal didnt bother was Duncan Hawkins, who scored the teams first ten points, before a Charlie Eldridge jumper made it 12-12. UCR failed to be remotely effective or efficient on offense, the UCR 2-3 zone which was a terrific defense last year, thanks to the coaching of Malcolm Payton, was inpenatrable in the first half of this game, and it took a Erik Robinson put back with 3 seconds to play to help Arkansas score 20 points in the half, ending it trailing 27-20.

Now is when the fun starts. Carmichael, seemingly took something at halftime that forced him to keep his eyes closed, as he had 5 TO's in 4 minutes before Cartier Copeland relieved him of his duties. It appeared the game was over as UCR took a firm 39-28 lead at that point. However Copeland showed the poise unbecoming of a freshman, especially one that didnt play PG in his hometown of Burnsville Minnesota. His play spurred an eight point run which made it 39-36. Then he brought down the ball, eight minutes to play, and hit a flashing Duncan Hawkins, who caught the ball at the wing, adjusted his weight, turned a fired a 3, it fell, much to the disgust of 5’9 Orien Cox, who had attempted to block the shot, despite having a slight height disadvantage. With five minutes to play, Eddie Morris nailed a 3 from the corner, and ARK took its first lead of the game, 42-41. With 1:35 left the score was 53-46 Arkansas and every press member at the game was packing up, while **** Vitale was giving UCR’s eulogy, talking about how Moore, Morris and Copeland outran, outgunned and outfought the UCR bench.
However, UCR wasn’t out of it, as Antwuan Allen, reserve Frosh PG who couldn’t hit the broadside of a barn with a uh, something big and throwable, but a Jordan-esque ability to come up with the big shot nailed a 3 pointer from the spot on the floor, at the hash mark, where Coach Payton’s name was written. 54-51. Brad Abram rushed in inbounding the ball and Allen stole it, ran outside, set up the offense, just to fire up another 3, banking it, and hooting and hollering while a befuddled Coach Payton screeched a TO over the roaring crowd. All the starters were substituted in, except Carmichael, who had been trying to hold down the fort alone. Copeland came in for him. 27.9 to play. We held the ball for 17 seconds before giving it to Jacobs to try to create a shot from the wing. He popped it with 3 seconds left, from a little above the FT line, clanked it, and the game ended in a scrum under the basket. Overtime!
However OT showed why a bench is so important, as Arkansas had all their starters on good rest to beat up on the depleted UCR ranks, who had lost Rob Coles and Boomer Smithson to the dreaded five foul massacre. Antwuan Allen gave it a good fight scoring five of his points, but his jumpshot with 2:07 to play ended a 13-0 run by Arkansas and cut the lead to 67-56.

Pigs play poorly but Win Home Opener over Buffalo http://www.hogwired.com/Media/Story/s240e1m7919.JPG
Arkansas' Bud Walton Center was ready to rock at the home opener
12/2/04 FAYETTEVILLE- The Razorbacks won the home opener for Coach Payton today, beating the Bulls of Buffalo, 77-61. Arkansas played sloppily, with 17 TO's to only 16 assists, but the Bulls were worse, with 14 assists to 24 To's. The game ended at 9:15 and no players were available for interview as Coach Payton sent them directly to bed to prepare for their 1:05 tip-off against San Francisco on Saturday.
Buffalo started off the game with 8 straight points as Arkansas looked pumped, but couldn’t hit the broadside of a barn. A TO with 12:00 left refocused them and they rattled off 15 in a row by the 9 and a half minute mark. In the next eight and a half minutes ARK built up a lead and when Carmichael hit Duncan Hawkins for an “and 1 alley oop” the pigs went up 45-30. Buffalo missed a 3pter and the hogs held the ball after a horrendous first half, to finish up 15

Matchup of early season juggernauts? Not Likely. Florida State may be 3-0 however their wins have come against powerhouses like Eastern Michigan (1-2) SBU (1-2) and Monmouth (0-3), although Arkansas has yet to exactly play a high class opponent either. This team will be well rested (games were played o the 21st 26th and 28th respectively) and should try to beat this exhausted Pig team up with its giant frontline (6'9 6'10 6'10). They must avoid foul trouble however as the only impact player (above 80) on the weak bench is SR 6'6 SF Bill Mobley, a D Specialist can be a liability on the O. Strong starters are the Strength, a weak bench is not, see you in Florida!

"Swarmed Seminoles" FSU SR SF Will Dux is trapped by a swarming Pig Press
The Arkansas Razorbacks mens basketball team continued to roll today, with a win in what FR SG Wilbur Scott called "The fastest game I've ever played in", 83-76. Arkansas will travel to meet the 4-1 Loyola Marymount team led by SR PG Terence Cooper (16.4 pts 5 rebs 7 Asts per game) and 7 foot junior center Dan Momplaisir (10.8 pts 11 rebs per game) on Monday. Florida State will go to Colgate and take on the 1-2 dentists.
R. Clark, the #1 recruit in America was in attendance today to watch FSU play, but this was the second time he had seen the hogs on the floor and he was, again, impressed. "They play tenacious defense," said the 6'8 defense specialist" and emphasize offensive rebounding and ball movement, and from what I've seen they just impose their will on opponents. R.'s father, Kent, said that he was incredibly impressed by both teams but thought that "the hogs are just more under control when they create chaos than any team we've seen so far. That Payton has something to do with it."
The game started with a play that epitamizes the pigs young season so far. After the tip, which was won by FSU, Antoine Carmichael and Bernie Jacobs stormed into the backcourt and pressed JR Ross Griffin into a panic, during which Chickenhawk II stole the ball, took two dribbles and from the 3 point line calmly tossed the ball over SO SG Richard Jorgusen's head, meeting Charlie Eldridge in mid-air for the Alley Oop.
It looked like ARK might have another blowout on their hands, with the score at 20-8 with 8:18 to play in the first. However with the subs in it was 29-23 ARK with five to play and the starters came back in during an FSU TO wiith 5 and a half left. A tip slam at the buzzer gave ARK a 9 point lead at half. 41-32
AT HALF: 41-32
POTH: Antoine Carmichael 2 pts 7 assists
Key Players:
Bernie Jacobs 8 pts
Charlie Eldridge 6 pts
Duncan Hawkins 11 pts 5 boards
Eddie Morris 8 pts 2 assists
Erik Robinson 3 pts 6 rebounds
The second half proved to be another fast-paced, exciting half. It looked, to the casual observer, like Arkansas was outrunning and outpounding FSU, but the Seminoles continued to creep closer until with 9:15 to go, Florida State ran off 3 straight buckets to make it 54-52. An Abrams dunk and a Morris 3 ball made it a seven point game again, but this is how the half would progress, FSU gives ARK a scare, ARK hits some big shots to maintain lead. They'd get it to 3 with under a minute left, but Eddie Morris hit some big FT's to end it.
Final: 83-76
POTG: Antoine 4 pts 12 assists 1 block 2 steals
Key Players:
Wilbur (the ultimate pig name) Scott 6 pts
Duncan Hawkins 13 pts 6 boards
Bernie Jacobs 12 pts
Eddie Morris 19 pts
Charlie Eldridge 8 pts
Erik Robinson 7 pts 9 boards

" My Razorbacks, the rumors are true."
--Assistant Coach Keith Gastel, addressing the Arkansas Basketball Team before their November 10th game @ Valparaiso
In a shocking story, Malcolm Payton, 21, has resigned from his post at Arkansas University. Rumors that he is to take the job at Cornell are unconfirmed. Arkansas was first alerted of his resignation 20 minutes before gametime when Coach Payton called them from somewhere in Ontario, known as Guelph. "He said he had no desire to be coaching at such a big program at the present time," said Arkansas AD Broyles, "He said the thrill was gone."
While not in the category of Ricky Williams and Barry Sanders in terms of stunning retirements, Coach Payton's abrupt resignation is one of the most surprising stories of the year, along with Barry Bonds being a possible steroids user (No Way!). Coach Payton has been let out of all Contract aggreements, and will only recieve a quarter of his 1.5 Million dollar salary for the year. Coach Payton named current UCR mascot Scott Tripplett as his successor and has urged his assistants to stay until the end of the season. Coach Payton could not be reached for comment.
Coach Payton's career numbers look a little something like this:
Record: 38-4
1 Sweet Sixteen Appearence
1 Tournament Appearence
1 Year at UCR
8 Games at Arkansas
1 Big West Coach of the Year award
1 Big West Championship
When asked if he thought Coach Payton would ever reapear on the sporting scene AD Frank Broyles said "I honestly do, I think he will be coaching for some little D-1 school by the end of the year. This wasn't a good fit for him, it happens, he moved on, and now we need to."

So thats the end of my ESPN College Hoops 2K4 Coaching Legacy. I hope you enjoyed it. Coach Payton may return next year in ESPN College Hoops 2K5, but I'm not sure yet. This Legacy has been dead for a long time now, and i figured i should close it officially and for good. I had a lot of fun writing and playing it and i hope everybody enjoyed reading it. I believe i will post a 2K5 Legacy with Cornell, but there I'm undecided. So until next time:

Hey man, this has been a great legacy, and I have read the whole thing (not all at once).
This is one of the best legacies on this board, and I hope Coach Payton is considering making a return next year after his suprise retirement.

Thanks everybody whose posted their kind words on my legacy. As the days dwindle until i start my new legacy (No announcements yet.) I would like some people to post a few things:
1. On a scale of 1-10 how would u rank this Legacy
2. As opposed to other legacies how would u rank it
3. What can i improve on, what are the positives and negatives on the legacy. I'd really appreciate it, and it'd make my next legacy even better if you could do it. Prez, Hotshot, Prince Rip, other "Chairmen of the Boards" (as bait used to say) I'd love it if u could participate in this

Note: I use Elprez 98 sliders
All American, 14 minute halves (20 on sim)
Final Score 76-70
POTG: Chris Murray 9 Points 10 Boards (1 free throw from DD)
Key players:
Thompson: 14 points
Steve Grant 16 Points 5 boards
Darrel Jameson: 10 points 4 boards
Ousmane Schmidt: 8 points
Rob Cole: 10 Points
Key Stats:
Free Throws made: UCR:8 SWMSU:2

Dear Guest,
On my first return to this forum in months, i noticed your post. Do you understand that this was written on 2k4, when the only way to obtain a realistic game was to modify the sliders, and the only person who could do that well was Elprez?
Every difficulty level was horribly unrealistic, and you should know that the elprez sliders were both challenging and realistic. I worked on this thing for quite a while, and used to care about what people thought about it. But honestly i haven't thought about this thing in probably around a year.
How deep did you have to delve into this message board to find something on which you could spit and make yourself feel better?

my only complaint with this legacy is the amount of upsets, yes there are cinderella teams but this got on the borderline of being unrealistic. A 26 point beating of UCLA with UC-Riverside? Beating Wake Forest and Wisconsin with them? I understand that they were close games, but even the best College Hoops players have trouble keeping up with top tier teams if you're a bottom feeder, much less beating them.
