Ayers declined to comment on a published report that the Sixers were trying to reacquire center Theo Ratliff from the Atlanta Hawks.

"We've had a lot of discussions about a lot of players," he said. "People have called us on a number of situations. Right now, it's just dialogue."

With the emergence of Dalembert I'll say there's nothing happening there, but you never know.

Antonio McDyess, who will be a free agent this summer, said he would not rule out returning to the Knicks. Of course, McDyess also called Knicks president Isiah Thomas "sneaky."

"I never say never," McDyess said last night. "I'll play it by ear."

A nice surprise, the Heat who said they weren't going to make any changes are now looking to deal as well, and telling teams rookie Dwyane Wade is the lone untouchable.

Whats' Cooking

The Raptors talked with Charles Oakley, and Chris Gatling worked out for them recently.

Isiah Thomas is trying (Keith Van Horn, anyone?), but it's hard to find a blockbuster every week. They're trying to deal or buy out Shandon Anderson now and whispering that maybe Allan Houston, who could be out several weeks with a tender knee, doesn't want to play through pain.

In Houston
Tomjanovich, who stepped down last season, is cancer-free and is on a rigorous exercise and health program. He's scouting for the Rockets and thinking about coaching again, but not for a while

Hmmmm
Jumpin' jack flash: The league average of made jump shots accounting for a team's points is 56.7 percent. The Timberwolves rank No. 1, scoring 69.3 percent of their points on jump shots. Sam Cassell has taken the most in the league, with Kevin Garnett third.

The Magic started playing former DePaul center Steven Hunter in hopes of moving him on to Dallas, but the Mavericks went for waived former Bull Scott Williams

No one ever talks about the Heat, while they are sneaking up in the Atlantic Division with a winning record. Is it 21-17 or somthin like that?

lol no 21-27, but they are in 9th place and ahead of Philly now. They are also only 1.5 games behind New York for the 8th spot in the East.

Poor Randy Ayers

It's almost impossible to coach a Larry Brown team. Randy Ayers is learning that. Brown demands--or creates--hard-working, offensively limited role players and puts them in position to contribute. He can do more with less than any coach, but the strain eventually leads him to leave and crushes the team. General manager Billy King is traveling with the team and talking trade, but who really wants Eric Snow, Aaron McKie or Kenny Thomas? Or Glenn Robinson? Not Ayers, it seems.

The Bucks have moved up to 4th in the East, and are ahead of New Orleans by half a game.

Micheal Redd was also voted as an All-Star reserve, meaning the Bucks will have 2 players (Redd and Ford) representing them on All-Star weekend.

__________

Miami is currently 9th in the East and one game behind the 8th Celtics.

They will not have any All-Star appearances but will be representedo n the weekends by Dwyane Wade in the rookie game, and still have a chance at a player in the skill comp or dunk contest, but that is very unlikely.

Miami is in the hunt for Erick Dampier or Nazr Mohammed, it's prime bait being Caron Butler, a Heat hearing aide reports . . .

The outstanding play of SG Michael Redd and PG T.J. Ford is a big reason the Bucks are in playoff contention. But the thing that separates this team from past Bucks teams is its ability to piece together a productive frontcourt on the cheap. F/C Brian Skinner is averaging 7.4 rebounds in just 27.4 minutes per game. Even C Daniel Santiago has held his own when forced into the lineup. But the real prize is F/C Dan Gadzuric. His numbers -- 5.6 rebounds and 1.7 blocks -- don't stand out, but when you consider he plays just 18.3 minutes, his production has been remarkable. Throw in PF Joe Smith, and that foursome makes about $8 million combined. . . .
