Its a question i have been asking myself alot as of late and with this past year .....I think we all got the answer....Without a Doubt its.......1.Jamal Lewis...and this isnt just because im a Huge Ravens fan....the stats back it up...i mean teams knew he was going to run and yet nobody could stop him!!!! The Ravens had an aweful pass attack and every team put 8 to 9 guys in the box to stop him...but it failed....the fact that the Ravens made the Playoffs is proof enough for me and it should be for everyone else as well...no other team relied on a player as much as Baltimore did ......just my humble opinion....Peace and lets all play fair!!

Tomlinson isn't a powerback. I agree he's arguably the best all-around or all-purpose back but he's not a powerback. Jamal Lewis wins this one hands down. Nobody can touch his combination of size, speed, power and agility.

Thanks i agree....
Even if your not a Raven fan or a Jamel Lewis fan you have to admit he
had a heck of a year and was the MVP for his team...Im shocked he didnt win MVP......as the colts have edge james, marvin harrison etc........while the titans have Eddie george and company and isnt MVP Supposed to go to the person that helped there team the most? Hands down that was Jamal Lewis.....if it wasnt for him the Ravens would not have won a single game...He single handedly beat the Browns twice.....good day all and thanks for voting....

Ok i am going to break this down a bit.
My favorite Power back is by far Bettis. He is loud and out spoken and he is one of the true powerbacks that have been around for a while.
Now if he go back a bit, I think Most people will agree that Larry Zonka is the Perfect model of a Power back. MEAN, likes the smell of blood and has no remorse. He is one of those guys we will NEVER see again in the NFL. He is the creator of running guys over.
Now in todays league and since bettis is to old to really be how he use to be 5 years ago. I would have to go with the obivous answer of Jamel Lewis. Now if you ask me if i think he is a GREAT back and i will say no. I think he is GOOD at best. I think you throw him in the backfield of say the cardinals or even worse and i think he will be as much of a star as Jake Delhomme was at the saints.

Well Gentlemen ,
We can all agree to dissagree.... Why not Don ameche, or Lenny moore...... we can go on like this all day ....and In Jamal Lewis Defense His Rookie season the Ravens O line wasnt very good and gave up alot of sacks and he still got 1300 yards ..and Priest Holms got almost 600 yards as a backup......Jamal is a star in this league ....and i think he would be a 1500 yard rusher for any team.....thanks for the input though..peace..

Jamal isn't definately a product of his offensive line alla Emmitt Smith.

You're completely wrong about MVP status. McNair isn't working with much up in Tennessee and no one has anywhere near the heart of Steve. And the comment to say to throw Jamal Lewis on the cardinals and he wouldn't do much just shows how dumb that person is because Arizona has one of the biggest o lines in the NFL. I also wouldn't call Jamal much of a power runner and putting 8 men the box helped him run right past them easier. But what did Jamal do against the titans? lol Just my input

Jamal Lewis is strictly a Power runner ....and sometimes it was 9 in the box .........The titans won games WITHOUT Steve Mcnair...where as the Ravens wouldnt have won any without Jamal......And lets not talk about bad games...the Ravens are 5-1 in the last 6 meetings and the Ravens picked offf Steve a few times in that game.....the Playoff loss the Ravens had were die to bad calls and Orlando Brown sticking up for his teamate......2 .....15 yarders...i mean c'mon....the ref's have it in for Baltimore and Billick...but next year is a new year ...i can wait for the ravens to sign Sapp and Owens.....hmmmmm.....

Dude get your facts straight.... McNair played in every game... so the Titans DID need him to win... Including putting him in for the last drive after he was injured to win the game on a 4th and long td against the Texans. Plus, please dont make exuses why the raven loss. If some idiot can't keep his temper it's no bodies fault but his own and you jumped off the fact that Lewis did didily squat against the number 1 rush defence.

Mcnair missed the last reg season game ...check your stats...he missed all or part of at least 4 games ....Espn was pretty shocked that he won part of the mvp award since he didnt take port in every game ...like a Jamal Lewis or Peyten Manning.....in the first Colts game he missed the whole game except the first drive....And all our teams are 0-0 right now anyway.....just from where i am sitting my team has a good shot at winning alot of games next year ..the whole team is locked in to long term deals...and we have alot of cap room for say ...i dont know .....Terrel Owens......and Warren sapp...both good friends of ray Lewis...both want to be on a winning team .....sounds like a match...and lord help the rest of the league if the Ravens get there Offence going....with the BIGGEST O-line in the League and the best rusher....top tight end in Heap.....you would have Travis Taylor , Marcus Robinson and add to that terrel Owens....thats a good combo..and there D speaks for it self...nuff said ..but add to that Warren Sapp....and it is improved that much more...peace..and beware next year..... odds makers already have the Ravens at 12 to 1 odds ......to win it all!!!

Jamal isn't definately a product of his offensive line alla Emmitt Smith. yeah everytime emmitt got hurt dallas just ran all over people..O line gets you to the line of scrimage..great backs get their yards after that..emmitt was a great back.... he didnt lose yardage.. dallas rode him into the ground...emmitt had 900 yards in his rookie season where he didnt even get start till after 7 weeks into the season...even in his last season with dallas.. behind the worst line in the league he got 900 yards.. now back to jamaal....I dont like the ravens.. but i reckognize talent...jamaal is mean... hes fast.. and he has good size... hes the best..north and south runner.. in the game...but their are a ton of guys who are right there with him...its not like there is a huge gap.. from him to the next guy...

Look, I'm not getting into the whole "emmitt" thing. If you believe he could have rushed for all those yards with any team then that's your perogative.

February 23rd, 2004, 02:03 PM
Anybody that knows football KNOWS that Emmit was a product of his line. he was a very good runner NOT a great runner.
rave_nomad
February 24th, 2004, 08:14 AM
emmit was a run-to-daylight kind of runner....he was quick but i think all O-lines pave the way ....part of every yard he got belonged to his line and the same with Jamal Lewis....I just prefer the power running style of Jamal and there is nobody i would rather use in a 3rd and 1 or 4th and short then Jamal...he is a tough player and wasnt healed all the way in 2002 when he gained 1300 yards and then to come back all the way and rush for over 2000 yards and break the single game rushing record is just awesome....he said before the CLeveland game that he was going to break that record and he did.....295 yards later ...he carried the Ravens to a 33-13 win.......So lets not get off the subject of who the best running Power running back in the NFL is??? No doubt hands down nuff said ...in my humble opinion...Jamal Lewis!!

healthy fred taylor?

February 25th, 2004, 07:40 AM
I think Fred Taylor is a bit of a quicker type of runner...not a straight up the gut kind of runner....but good call anyway....As for Ricky Williams..if we mention him we have to mention the man taken before him in the draft ...Edgerrin James....He has had more productivity then James and is a bigger threat out of the backfield....good power guy as well....

John Riggins, Earl Campbell, Larry Csonka, Franco Harris, Jim Brown, Walter Payton, Eric Dickerson(more known for his speed probably), and a long list of others where all great power runners. Remember Christian Okoye(spelling)? He was a monster a few years back. Bo Jackson! I mean WOW! What a shame he got injured or maybe he coulda been best ever. Would I put Jamal on the same level with any of these guys...probably not (ok, better than okoye)...but I am very impressed with his ability, and I think as long as this little problem that just came up gets put behind him he could be eventually listed as one of the best. You're gonna hate this, and I can't believe I'm saying it cause I am a die-hard Michigan fan, but I still rate Bettis(Notre Dame), and Eddie George(Ohio State, yuck I can't believe I just typed that...lol jk) as the best power runners. Although I will say that Bettis is running on E, and Jamal is prime to take his place. Lets see if Jamal can have 1/2 of the success next year as he had this year. I'm routing for him. :)

I agree,
im an oldschool fan myself ...growing up in Baltimore i was tought about the Great Johnny unitas ..and i studied his film ...and in my eyes he is the Best QB ever...tough as nails ..played with broken ribs, ankle etc....
but as far as running backs go right now in the NFL Its Jamal Lewis and i dont see how anyone can say different...he blew out his knee 2 years ago......gained almost 1400 yards after he came back not at 100% mind you which is hard to do ....And he almost broke the all time rushing record....all this and he KNEW the feds were going to indict him ....He knew for over a year and yet still won the rushing title....he has alot of focus and im betting he will be with the Ravens next year and he will put all this behind him...just like Ray Lewis did in 2001 when he was cleared..the Ravens put it behind them and they won the SuperBowl....im hoping for the same outcome..thanks for the support thogh im sure he will come out of this a better person..peace!!

I am really surprised leaving out CLINTON PORTIS. He is one of the youngest players in the league and marked his presence very well last season. No wonder Skins are looking at trading him for Bailey. Anyways this and the following is just my opinion.
Ricky Williams though one of the strongest does not get enough respect the only reason for this is FINS need a new QB (should have taken Brunell), coach was supposed to get fired instead a 2 yr extension (there goes my head with that I have no idea what is wrong with FINS office). They need better WR's to take the attention off of Ricky (every one knows, even in the video game he is going to get more touches than any). I am hoping he will do better next season.

Clinton portis is a scat bac ..small in size and uses speed to find holes...in this poll i wanted opinions in "Power backs" and if you think williams has a hard time because nobody respects the pass in Miami ...take a look to Baltimore....they put 8 and 9 in the box because they knew they were not not going to pass.....

Yeah Jamaal Lewis is good. I like to watch him run, but I did not on Nov 16th 2003. Lowest score the whole season against Miami 9-6 loss. If he is so good he should have ran more than 88 yds. I agree he is good but he is not the best. Records don't matter becoz' Patriots had no records but won the Super Bowl. Carolina did not either but went to the Super Bowl.
At the end of the day nothing matters a W in the final game of the season is what is important (thats what the whole season is about isn't it). So take the loss and wait for the next season. Lets hope we will have a good 04-05 season cannot wait till season opener (ain't got no money to get NFL network).

Ricky williams didnt do anything special against the Ravens either..i think he rushed 36 times though.....And that was Anthony Wrights first game as a starter ...things have changed..but i agree i cant wait till next season..all teams 0-0 right now!!!!

Ricky did not do anything special but he went over 100 yds that game. Why couldn't Ray Lewis or Ravens Def stop him?
