ATLANTA -- Baltimore Ravens running back Jamal Lewis, who had the second-highest rushing total in NFL history last season, was indicted Wednesday on federal drug charges.
The Atlanta native is accused of conspiring to distribute cocaine in the summer of 2000, U.S. Attorney William S. Duffey announced at a news conference.
Lewis was expected to turn himself in on Thursday, Duffey said. A message left for Lewis' attorney, Ed Garland, wasn't immediately returned.
Lewis is charged with conspiring to possess with the intent to distribute 5 kilograms of a substance containing cocaine and using a cell phone in the commission of the first count, Duffey said.
FBI special agent Hoyt Mahaley said in an affidavit that an informant contacted Lewis about the cocaine and recorded the conversation.
"The cooperating source told Lewis that he/she was willing to sell the narcotics to Lewis' associates for a price that Lewis can tax," meaning the price could be marked up for a profit, Mahaley said in the affidavit.
"And Lewis responded 'Yeah," the affidavit said.
Lewis rushed for 2,066 yards last year, becoming one of five players in NFL history to rush for 2,000 yards. He fell short of Eric Dickerson's record of 2,105 yards in the final game.
A Ravens spokesman, Chad Steele, said the indictment came as a surprise to the team.
"We had no clue," Steele said. He added that they were still gathering information and would issue a statement later.
The NFL declined to comment.
My Question is this .....Why Wait 4 years if you have a case???? It seems a little too soon after he rushes for all these yards .....ohhh yeaaa we should try and gain attention to ourselves and bust him for drugs....Nice try .......But i doubt anything will come from this....I wish cops would go after real criminals ......but they love the attention i guess....Justice will prevail...peace!

See Nomad....just when you thought the future was SO bright for the Ravens, suddenly things change.
Granted this indictment doesn't mean that he is going to be locked up, but that's a possibility. In addition to that, he was already on the NFL's list of players that have tested positive before...so this is at least the second strike against him.

What are you talking about ..??? We live in a place where you are innocent untill PROVEN Guilty ....And besides that if you look in my past statements i said they have a top Prospect in a running back "Musa Smith" He was a stud back and a workhorse at UGA and had a few TDs for Baltimore Last season ..i expect big things from him ...and i also stated that the Ravens wanted to get him more involved next year .....Which he will be regaurdless of the Jamal Lewis outcome...so things still look pretty bright to me...:)....Peace!

Wll I was watching ESPN and the charge seems a little drummed up.....
It was something that The Atlanta feds say happen in 2000 Beofre Jamal's Rookie season.....They wait 4 years and untill He wins the Rushing title to bring it up with no proof of money or drugs exchanging hands? It seems a little like a railroad job to me......Who knows maybe the fed's in Atlanta were ****ed off because The Ravens Put Mike Vick out for most of the past season and they had such a crummy year....(Good payback guy's)....I think this is dragging a players name through the mud....lets announce this to the press first !!!! Let everyone form a real fast opinion and convict him before he even goes to trial!!!! It's a load of BS and nothing will come from this....last time i checked as well Ray Lewis was found innocent and won the SuperBowl MVP in 2001......Anybody can be acused of anything by anyone else...it doesnt make them guilty .....Big time Football stars,Baseball Stars,Basketball and hockey stars have a big target on them people like to bring them down....But i think we should all hold our judgment and our tongues untill we get the facts.....and so far the facts are no proof of drugs and no proof of money exchanging hands......I would hate to be an innocent man with some of you all on the Jury...have a nice day peace!!!
RAVENS’ STATEMENT ON JAMAL LEWIS
General manager Ozzie Newsome’s statement on Jamal Lewis
“We are aware of the situation and we’re trying to learn more. These allegations go back to 2000, prior to Jamal’s first training camp and contract. We’ve talked with Jamal, and he’s returning to Atlanta to meet with authorities. We believe in due process, and Jamal will have his day in court. There are two sides to every story. From what we know of the charges, these seem out of character for the Jamal we know.”

Say what you will. But when I heard this news yesterday I was at a loss for words. Yes it was 4 years ago. Jamal will have his day in court that's for sure. And at this point I'm not leaning toward either side. I cannot defend him, I gotta leave that up to his defense attorney's. As a Ravens fan when I heard that yesterday I admit it hurt and was highly disappointing. But at the same time I refused to turn my back on him and call him names, the prosecutors and those in America who believe people are guilty and need to be proven innocent will do that. Only thing I can say is we'll see what happens. The good thing is we still have 7 months before the first game to gauge this issue. If he is going to be with us then good, but if something happens for the worse, then we gotta deal with the adversity and just go on unfortunately. If Jamal is innocent the league and team will decide what reprimands will be needed. If he is guilty and I hate to say it this way, but there is no other way to say it, if he is guilty he should do his time.

Rave you kill your own credibility everytime you type.
They have him on tape talking about 5 keys of ***e and him selling to his friend and making some loot for himself. And taking years to indict someone is not uncommon. Getting him on tape was probably just something that happened during there investigation of a much larger criminal. Large dope cases take years to build and there probably indicting all kinds of people now that were part of this sting.
Musa Smith the next Jamal all the sudden lmao.
No wonder that teams so tough. There all freaking felons that should be in prison. Anyone else named Lewis on the Ravens we should worry about?? I guarantee if there is anyone else named Lewis on that team they will be indicted on some kind of charge with in a year.
Man this Jamal Lewis guy almost broke the single season rushing record. Lets create some fake dope charge to get him back.lmao . Do you really belive this stuff rave?

It was actually a conspiracy formed by the members of this forum. We all got tired of Powerback surveys, Raven up and coming announcements, and cut and paste articles from ravensfanclub.com. We all pulled some strings, made a tape, and sent it to the feds under the agreement that it would go to the press first.
What an embarrassment to the league. Its a really good thing he didn't break the record.
Ray Lewis responded " I didn't see nothin"

Come on Rave are you seriously saying that the ATL PD is setting up Jamal Lewis because Vick got hurt?lol....This case goes way deeper than Jamal Lewis. This case isnt even strickly about him. He was just involved with lots of other people.
Ray Lewis was found not guilty because of technicalities and the stupid prosecutors trying the case. Dont forget he DID hide the weapon that was used to kill 2 people. Only problem was that the police and prosecutors screwed up the case.

Four Years..yah, that's a long time but How many MULTI-KILO COCAINE FEDERAL INVESTIGATIONS have you done? I'm sure those things take time. If they do have a tape of him agreeing to Distribute or HELP distribute/ or buy it so he's hooking his Comrades up to do it...it's still conspiracy. He doesn't Physically need to have the Kilos on him to get himself in trouble...you should know this. Man...Musa Smith can't hold Jamal's jock, so you need to quit all the talk about him stepping in and without any drop-off!!!
Jamal is innocent until proven guilty, but he has already been caught TWICE by the league for alcohol and substance abuse. Not exactly a good track record....especially considering that he was last caught in 2001...right around the time all this police informant had discussions with Lewis about buying some blow.

So which is it? Is Jamal the man or have you now hooked up the wagon to Musa? I've been following your posts about Musa and you keep saying that he looked good and I quoted you above about how he had "A FEW GOOD TD RUNS"....
Well, here are your boy Musa's stats from last year: http://www.nfl.com/players/playerpage/396086
Sorry, but 9 carries for 31 yards is not someone that I would hang my teams' future on. Shall I continue?? Ok...those whopping 9 carries came in 2...yeah, that's right....2 games!!! And he got those carries because those games were blow-outs against San Fran and Cleveland. What's worse is that he even had a fumble in those 9 carries!!!

While it does seem odd that the police would wait 4 years to act on their evidence, I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that the investigation has already led to something like 30 arrests. So, since arresting an NFL player will lead to lots of headlines, even if he isn't the offensive player of the year, it makes sense to leave his arrest til last, so as not to tip off everyone else under investigation.
I'm not saying he's guilty, just that I highly doubt the FBI just made this up. Personally, I find it strange that you can be arrested for thinking about buying drugs, I hope that's not the case in my country.

STENCHMEN Im not going anywhere!!!! HERE IS A LITTLE READING FOR YOU ...Take it for what it is....
Around the league
One final thought (OK, for now, at least) on the Jamal Lewis situation: Ed Garland, a member of the phalanx of high-profile Atlanta defense attorneys retained by the Ravens' tailback, revealed Wednesday that his client has known of the federal investigation of him for about a year. If that is indeed the case -- and, by vocation alone, Garland is given to some flights of hyperbole -- then a grudging tip of the hat to the Baltimore star for his apparent skills of focus. Watch Kobe Bryant sometime, even during his recent scoring spree, and try to convince someone his game isn't suffering from a natural preoccupation with his off-court difficulties. With federal authorities apparently closing on him quicker than some of the linebackers against whom he played in 2003, Lewis set the single-game rushing record, and came within one more long run of topping Eric Dickerson's single-season mark. Now that, friends, is focus. Either he considered the investigation frivolous or Lewis, as some of his teammates suggested to us, is a very disciplined guy.
www.espn.com
STenchmen .......check it out if you want!!!!
HEY STENCHMEN HERE IS SOME TERREL OWENS INFO ...Didnt you say Baltimore was never going to get him??? LMAO...
On the Owens front, the financial fallout from his agents monumental muck-up might not be as catastrophic for him as originally assumed. His current contract, which remains property of San Francisco for now, calls for "T.O." to earn $17.7 million in base salaries over the next three seasons. But the 49ers aren't going to pay that, because they don't want Owens, and will trade him. Any team dealing for Owens -- uh, can you say Baltimore folks? -- won't want to assume those base salaries and the annual salary cap charges of $7 million-plus that accompany them and will probably demand a new contract. And if he signs a new deal, Owens is going to want upfront money in the $15 million range. Even if the base salaries in the first couple years of a new contract are at the league minimum, Owens will still probably earn more in three years with a new team than he would have made staying in San Francisco through the 2006 season. The big edge, though, still goes to the 49ers. They now wield the leverage hammer they didn't have until Thursday, when news of the contractual faux pas went public. Instead of getting nothing in return, when Owens walked out the door in free agency, San Francisco now figures to get a package of draft choices in return.
HMMM Stenchemen ...is this crap too??? Maybe im making it up ...or maybe im using my Magic 8 ball......What do you think smart guy????

Associated Press
ATLANTA -- The government could have a tough time proving its drug conspiracy case against Baltimore Ravens running back Jamal Lewis because of the length of time it took to file charges, legal experts say.
The charges filed Wednesday were within the five-year statute of limitations. But a jury may ask why it took so long when authorities claim to have two taped conversations from June 2000 in which Lewis tried to broker a cocaine deal, say two former federal prosecutors and a law school professor.
"A jury will consider the passage in time in evaluating the government's evidence," said John Rowley, former chief of the narcotics section for the U.S. Attorney's office in Alexandria, Va. "The jury may well refuse to convict on merely one or two conversations without corroborating evidence of some kind."
Jim Cohen, director of the clinical law program at Fordham law school in New York, agreed.
"I think time is not the government's friend in this case," Cohen said. "Absent intervening stuff, the jury is going to be very suspicious."
the credibility of the informant is likely to be called into question by the defense.

I will say that you are easily the fruitiest Raven Fan I've ever met and you definitely have your Airline Tickets booked for San Fran with Jamal. Take it easy Gonad...don't cry...Jamal will be OK.... Waiting 4 years doesn't take away from the fact the boy tried to buy and distribute Cocaine with his buddies...4 years ago makes it OK? This is what you are so blind to. Jamal is Innocent Jamal is Innocent....UNTIL PROVEN GUILTY!
I also said that YOU CAN HAVE OWENS...he's not all that so he'll fit perfectly on your team. And while you're busy making your 2004 Predictions and reading every article known to man about Jamal Lewis' case.....Please take time to realize that almost every piece of garbage flying out of your mouth is SPECULATION. People will take you for a joke until it's etched in stone. Remember that...
BTW...they're just the Ravens..I could really care less about your 6 paragraph articles from the Baltimore Sun. Enough already...I'm a Patriots fan..I don't give a **** about your sorry a55 Ravens...do you get it yet? Einstein? I just think it's funny that a character like you has the guts to come out and parade around like you done something special. What have you done? Back to 2000?

Keep another thing in mind. If Jamal and his Buddies GANG **** a woman and Jamal does nothing but "keep a lookout" while his goons are committing the crime...should he be punished too? If he was caught on the phone telling his boys WHERE the girl hangs out or anything close to having to conspire to the gang ****...should he be found guilty?
If one of the rapists isn't known about till 4 years later, should we just ignore him or say that convicting him for taking part in the gang **** is going to be nearly impossible because after all...the case is WEAK because it happened 4 years ago?
I know this is apples and oranges but a crime is a crime is a crime. So Jamal is a nicer guys and hangs around new people these days...Does this mean he's different so let's ignore his past?
Truth is..we don't know squat about what will happen...the story's not even 4 days old and your already calling Jamal's next run in the huddle...relax F.Lee Bailey...your boy's in TIME OUT and could be there for a while.

When everything i said and wrote comes true ..i guess that makes me look better in some people's eyes.....But the fact remains that i have very, very valid points...4 years is almost at the statue of limitations....if they had waited 1 more year they couldnt even have tried the case!!!
And another thing..what would you do to become famous??? Think about it...if you were a fed or a DA ..and you had this in your lap ..would you take advantage of it?? They dont have a case and everything i have read so far points to that fact....4 years it took to get this going...the fact the Jamal knew this was coming and still won the Rushing title..the crooked informant.....and all it will take is (1) out of all the Jurrors to be undecided and he walks......and i think for most people....it takes more then a "Yea' from a tape that could have been of anyone..to be found guilty ...lets not forget he is from the area and does alot for that community as well......The Bottom line is i love proving people wrong...And i am about to prove all of you chumps and Stenchmen wrong ....all these posts are in my archive's ...so when Jamal gets found "Not Guilty" and Terrel Owens Goes to Baltimore and Warren Sapp Goes to Baltimore i am going to have a field day ragging on all you nay sayer's!!!! There will be no hiding Stenchmen....I will write 1000,0000 posts if i have too...the main thing is when all is said and done i was right.......

First of all, i think the all Ravens players should just stay away from the city of Atlanta. I dont know if jamal is guilty or not--could care less.
You are right that Ray was found "not-guilty" but man, he should count his lucky stars that his defense lawyer was really good and the Atlanta PD f'd up the investagation. I do remember that him and his lawyer "plea-bargained" with the DA. I dont know what really happened there so i cant make a judgement, but if two of my friends stabbed someone in a club i was at when it happened...then they find the victims blood in my limo...you would have to raise some eyebrows; however, i was not there so who knows. Also, who knows what happen with jamal as well...we will have to believe in the court system to figure that out.
But you are basing Musa Smiths greatness on his college stats? Who is the all-time leading rusher in the NFL...Ron Dayne...how is his pro career going. All-time passing leader...Ty Detmer...he probably holds all kind of pro records by now--OH YEAH, he has never really landed as a number 1 guy! Someone already mentioned Leaf...so no need to go there.
I dont see how you can say there will be no big drop off if Jamal does not play...Come on man. That is like saying the Colts would be just as good with out Peyton. If Tomlinson was Lewis' backup then you would have a case, but a guy who has carried 9 times for 31 yards with a fumble does leave a big question mark. Hey, could turn out to be a good back, but how can YOU make that call. Have you seen him run drills? have you seen him at practice? You cant make a judgement on a guy with 9 carries and preseason carries--LEAF LOOKED GREAT IN THE PRESEASON AS A ROOKIE! Of course Billick is going to say that he has the coinfidence in Musa. He has to keep his team fired up. That is what Modell pays him for--TO MOTIVATE! Not like he is going to say, "Well, we lost Jamal our season is over." He has to make his players believe.
Remember when Green went down with the Rams..."We will rally around Kurt Warner..."(**** Vermiel).
The one thing the Ravens do have going for them though...is two years ago they went to the playoffs with a washed up Terry Allen. I would have to say that Musa is an upgrade from Allen. I dont think losing Lewis would cost them the central, bc the Steelers, Bengals, or Browns still are not good enough to over take them.

I have in fact seen Musa Smith in Practice...Like i said im a fan.....He has run with 1st team offence ...and i was impressed....The ravens as a team are confident that Jamal in innocent they are not going to sign another RB
or draft one.....they will go ahead with there free agent plans...
Tuesday, March 2, 2004
Associated Press
OWINGS MILLS, Md. -- Ravens coach Brian Billick defended Jamal Lewis on Tuesday and predicted the star running back will be acquitted of drug conspiracy charges.
Lewis, the NFL offensive player of the year who gained the second-most rushing yards in league history last season with 2,066 yards, has pleaded innocent to helping arrange a cocaine deal in 2000 for a childhood friend in Atlanta.
"We're very proud of the human being that Jamal Lewis is today," Billick said. "I have no doubt that he will fight his way out of this difficulty."
General Manager Ozzie Newsome said Lewis' legal trouble will not affect the team's approach to free agency, which begins Wednesday, or the draft April 24-25.
"We stand by Jamal," Newsome said. "Nobody knows Jamal as well as we do, but, right now, that hasn't altered our offseason plans at all."
That shows alot of trust in a player.....I didnt say there wouldnt be any dropoff....i just said Musa Smith can be a great back......

Of course it sounds like trust. They are not going to come out and say they think the guy is guilty...even if they did believe he did it.
I kind of think the players assocation would be at the Ravens door with legal action of their own. The NFLPA has a lot of power in the NFL. Plus, if they said, "We think Jamal is quilty." If Jamal was found innocent they would have to deal with a guy who would be extremely unhappy with his team.
Like i said, there would be a drop off at the position bc jamal is one heck of a back, but the Ravens did go to the playoffs three years ago with a over-the-hill Terry Allen.

this is true...but i think the amount of trust is something special...there not going to sign a Running back for insurance..i think that is cool...just my opinion though....I dont think many teams would be as calm as the Ravens are about this though...peace!!

I would have to agree with you on that. Last year the Buccaneers were faced with the same problem with Pittman and they went out and signed Thomas Jones.
One thing i will give billick, he is cocky enough to think he can win with anyone on the field...and for the most part he has been right. I still cant believe they made the playoffs two years ago with Terry Allen and Elvis Grabac. Also, he came into the season with a rookie and expected to win...
