NEW NCAA COACH FINDS HIS WAY TO FORDHAM

February 27,2004: Topping the sports headlines today as fordham's old coach get's the boot, Bud Webber get's the promotion. Bud, formerly a high school head coach led his high school team to 5 state championships out of the last 6 years. It was clear the second he became a high school head coach, a legacy was started. Fordham's former coach, though getting fordham to a decent team, clearly was not getting the job done as fordham's athletic director would have liked. We caught up to Bud and were able to ask him a few questions.

Larry: Well, you're Fordham's new coach, how does it feel to be moved on up to the college ranks after clearly being a great high school coach, leading your team to 5 out of 6 state championship games, winning 4.

Bud: Well it feels great, I have been following fordham, watching them develop. What an opporitunity for me to be able to coach a team with so much potential.

Larry: You have 3 very solid point guards in Matthew Perkins, Marius Roberts and Brandon Cooper. You also have Glenn Bates, a 7'1 center who I feel is very underrated.

Bud: Yes, all 3 I would love to play as much as possible. Each have something to bring to the table. And your right about Glenn, he is very underrated and look for him to make an impact this season. Him and Mustafa(Yates) should both be getting good playing time. This is just such and all around great ball club.

Larry: Thanks for your time Bud.

Bud: Thank you.

And now on to the 2 main assistant coaches. Fab Chenning is a very solid all around coach. Probably capable of being a head coach but is willing to work under Bud Webber as an assistant. Trent Reeves is great with the court aspect of coaching. Also a great recruiter willing to go for the big boys. Trent is also very good at just about everyone else, another great coach. This season is looking promising for Bud Webber and the fordham Rams.

RAMS CHALK UP A LOSS. IS BUD THE ANSWER?

February 26,2004: The fordham Rams faced a difficult loss tonight. The Memphis Tigers seemed to be playing better the whole game. Every time it looked like fordham might make a run, the tigers would hit a shot. It seemed like they could not be stopped. While the rams picked up their game late in the first half and through most of the 2nd it was not enough due to their sloppy start and finish. Matthew Perkins(Starting point guard) fouled out with a few minutes left in the game. Although it was only one game, some are starting to question Webber's credibility as a NCAA coach. I personally think he will pull it together. It is his first game as an NCAA head coach and playing a solid Memphis team.

Jane: What would you say to those that are already questioning you, after one loss?

Bud: I would say give it time, it will come. I can sort of understand their complaints, that game was not pretty. But I am new and it takes time to get used to a new system. Also it is a big jump from high school to division 1 ball.

Jane: Overall, what would you say of your team's performace and what you think they're capable of?

Bud: I would say we definately started and finished slow. We had some great play in the middle. However, it is not enough. We NEED to play that way the whole game to be able to chalk up a win. There were some good spots however, we forced some turnovers, and had GREAT bench play. We did not get it in the paint at all like I would have liked. Only 4 points I believe down low, that is not what you want.

Jane: And before I let you go, speaking of that great bench play, could we see a linup change?

Bud: Well I doubt next game. After we play Siena next week I will evaluate all of the players and we'll see, don't get ahead of yourself now.

Jane: Ok, you heard it from the best scource out there, Bud Webber, head coach of the Fordham Rams. Thank you for your time coach.

Bud: No, thank you.

Well, there are Bud Webber's post game quotes. Now we'll leave you with gametime stats.

Player of the game: Steven Cooper of the Memphis Tigers. He racked up 21 points, 2 rebounds, 3 assists, 1 steal but had 1 turnover.

And player of the rams, picked by Bud Webber himself: Glenn Bates came off the bench to get 8 points, 9 rebounds, but had 1 turnover. He may be a player to get changed in the lineup. Another player that may get brought up is John Blackwell who had 16 points off the bench.

Now for the team stats
Rams Tigers

"IT'S HARD TO BELEIVE, AFTER SUCH A GREAT GAME"

Feb. 28, 2004
Those are the words spoken by Bud Webber after a heart-breaking defeat by Siena. Once again, fordham started out on the road looking a little sloppy. Giving Siena an 8 point lead early. They picked up their game pretty soon though, getting themselves a lead through most of the game. Siena picked it up at the end, got a lead. Then Fordham fought there way into a tie game. Siena made the bucket, getting a 2 point lead with 12 seconds. The guards playing hot-potato, refusing to get the ball down low to the big men for the easy bucket to send it into overtime. Matthew Perkins crosses his man over goes up..... Well, you're gonna have to read post game quotes to find out what happened in this one.

Jeff: You and John passing it back and forth to finish it off, not looking down low. Was there any reasoning behind that?

Matthew: Well, definately not. We should have looked down low for the easy bucket. Umm... that is something that should come in time. Coach is stressing the 3 ball a little bit more, trying to get us guard involved.

Jeff: Well, you got the crossover. Just missing the bucket, actually that was right on. It just rimmed out. What were you thinking at that point?

Matthew: Well you know, I looked up and there was I think 5 seconds left. I did a little through the legs pull up. I looked, saw it hit center rim, I started to grin, everyone put their arms up in a little field goal, aaaaand it came out.l

Jeff: Ha, nice description of events!

Matthew: Thank you

Well, there you heard Matt Perkins, starting PG for the Fordham Rams. Now quotes from Bud Webber, let's hope he didn't get grilled to bad....

Jeff: You get another loss, you can't feel real good about your teams play as of yet.

Bud: Actually, I feel they played very well tonight, fixing the problems I wanted them to fix, I told them all it was a great game in the locker room afterwards.

Jeff: What is going through your mind, Fordham giving you a chance to step up, and you lose two straight.

Bud: Ha Ha Ha, well you know, I can only hope for my job....(grins) but um. You know it's hard to beleive, after playing such a great game, that we can come up with a loss. You know, I told them they needed to improve there outshot shooting, end up shooting 40 something percent from the ark. Last game we only had 4 points down low, this game we had a whopping 52.

Jeff: Wow, it's nice to have a coach with such a positive attitude. Before I head off, do you think this emotional loss is going to effect your teams play? And also, you've been asked it before, how's the change of lineup coming along?

Bud: I knew that was coming. I would have to say it will effect our play, but for the better. Right now these kids are hungry for a win, and they're going to go out and get one next game at Manhatten. And, yes I have made some line-up changes. Whether there will be a change in the starting linup i'm not sure, but there will be a change in the kids minutes. And I have a couple set linups to have some come off the bench. A big lineup, and a little one.

Jeff: Alright, i'll be looking for a win.

Bud: yea yea, me too....

Wow, Webber really does feel good about that....loss? Ok now to the stats

IN THE LOCKER ROOM AT HALFTIME

Bud Webber: YES, that's what i'm talking about, and you know what linup i'm talking aboout too. I must admit, a loss was running through my head until you guys came in.

Whole team: (claps)

Bud: So, yall think we're gonna win?

Whole team: YEA!

Bud: Alright, we're up 35 29 at half. Don't force three's, but take them if you're open. Mustafa(smiles) nice 3 pointer. Don't do it again...

Mustafa Yates: Yea, I don't know coach, I just put it up for some reason. Hey, I made a few in practice yesterday....

Bud: True, true. Now listen, even though we have a lead at halftime, don't get overconfident. It's only 6 and they're a good team. It's funny, a couple days ago a reporter asked me if I had any lineups planned. I told her about the big lineup, that's right you guys who saved us the beggining of a blowout at halftime. You know who's starting the second half, right.

John Blackwell: The starting linup.

Bud: No, the BIG lineup.

John: Coach, aint you gonna give me another chance, I mean I started.

Bud: Well so did Mark, he's not complaining. Don't worry you'll get your time.

John: (Walks out of the locker room, head hanging)

Bud: Don't worry about him, it won't affect our chemistry. He will still play, he's just frustrated. Alright bring it in.(Starts clapping)

Whole team: (Brings it in, heads hanging)

FORDHAM STEALS A WIN ON THE ROAD

Feb. 28, 2004
In order to gain a win, especially on the road, you need at least solid play from all of your starters, right. WRONG! Fordham informed me, Jeff, a couple of days ago that he had a couple of lineups planned to come off the bench. I now know that it is known as the BIG lineup. This lineup consists of Steven Cooper(or Matthew Perkins)at the point, Drew Williamson at the shooting guard, Michael Haynes at the Small Forward though he starts at Power Forward, Mustafa Yates at power forward(Starting Center) and Glenn Bated at the center. Tonight John Blackwell started over the usual, Drew Williamson. John did not show the explosiveness he usually does while coming off the bench, and Drew Williamson came up huge scoring wise off the bench! Glenn Bates is a 7'1 center who comes off the bench. He has been playing great these first few games. He came up big today. Well, you know what's next, it's post game quotes from me, Jeff.

Jeff: Finally snagged a win, third one on the road. How are you feeling right now?

Bud: Wow, I could not explain to you the emotions running through me right now. My first win as an NCAA head coach. I just, wow.

Jeff: I have just been itching to ask about that 3 pointer by Mustafa Yates. No need for it, clock not running down, not open, and he's your starting center who I don't think i've ever saw hit a 3. What was up with that?

Bud: Ha ha, well I talked to him about that at halftime. He basically said his instincts told him to shoot. Also yesterday at practice he hit a couple, I guess it's just cockyness.

Jeff: Well you spoke of your lineups coming off the bench, and I saw one of them, the big lineup, go to work. Any chance of them starting next week?

Bud: Drew(Williamson) normally starting, coming off the bench today coming up big. He scored somewhere in the 20's and yes, there is a chance of that lineup starting next game. I'll tell you what, Glenn'll be happy about that!

Jeff: Now let's talk about Glenn Bates. Coming off the bench again tonight, winning player of the game awards. It seems like the best player on your team game by game always comes off the bench. I could easily see him in the starting lineup, great talent.

Bud: Yes, he is definately a great talent! Our bench goes so deep, I will definately tell everybody at home the starting lineups the day before the game. There may be a pretty big change.

Jeff: Looking forward to it.

Bud: Me too, we'll c-ya.

Jeff: Ok, buh bye.

And now for the stats!

Points: 68 64
field goals: 33 for 59 56% 26 for 50 52%

I like the locker room aspect as well. I don't think anyone has done this take on things and that's saying something because a lot of angles have been covered when you look at all the legacies

Now I have discovered hotshot's roleplay sliders...... I can't put the game down now!!! I am restarting my legacy now with the same head coach, using role play. I will only play the point guard at all times. To tell you the truth with my old legacy when I thought I should lose and I was killing the teams, I would let up. That led to my first 2 losses, then I thought I should win and I won. You can't control winning or losing with these sliders, you just have to try as hard as you can for realistic wins or losses. It's just I have been playing ESPN NFL football and I got bored with this game cuz when I tried as hard as I could I would win, not anymore...

http://www.fordhamsports.com/images/sport_specific_logo/softball_small.gif FORDHAM ANNOUNCES NEW HEAD COACH

Today Fordham announced the firing of last year's head coach Dereck Whittenburg, in return getting first time college coach Bud Webber. There is no doubt coach Whittenburg helped turn fordham into a very respectable program. Executive Director of Athletics, Frank McLaughlin, just felt that coach Bud Webber could some day turn this squad into one of the nations elite teams. Here's what he had to say.

"Dereck(Coach Whittenburg) was a great coach. He is definately going to be missed. I'm sure he will find another head coaching job, a great coach. We just felt that he would never take us to the top. Bud (Webber) is an unbeleivably talented coach. He has never coached college basketball but has definately worked up quite a high scool record, bringing his team to 5 state championships, winning 4. Overall we are very happy with our new head coach and we are confident he will bring us success.

Coach Whittenburg will most definately be missed. But with the new addition of Coach Bud Webber I know fordham will be a real force in college ball. Athletic director Frank McLaughlin seems to feel the same way. Well, we wish coach Whittenburg the best of luck, and we'll see you come opening day.

http://www.nba.com/media/playerfile/herb_brown.jpg WHAT BUD HAD TO SAY

This has certainly been a busy time for Bud Webber. After just winning another state championsip he gets a call on his cell phone on the way back. It is the fordham athletic director offering the job. Bud called him back just a week ago and now it's official, Bud Webber is officially your Fordham Rams head coach.

"(laughs) Wow, i'm still catching my breath, I tell ya. Just a week or two ago I was riding back home after winning the state championship, now i'm sitting here, talking to you as fordham head coach. Look for me to possibly make some changes, doing what I feel is neccesary to turn this into a top team. I will be hiring new assistant coaches, and i'm going to try to get as good of recruit class as possible after this season. I am going to expect all players to keep there grades up, or they will not play. I must admit I never thought I would be coach of a college team, especially one as great as this."

Well he sure seems confident in what he is going to bring to the table. Looking forward to seeing what he does with this program. But you gotta know he's modist, 4 state championships in 6 years, that has college coach written all over it.

MEET THE ASSISTANT COACHES

Dennis Buggs http://aol.nba.com/media/playerfile/del_harris.jpg

We asked Dennis what he hoped to bring to this program.

"Well I feel I could be a great scouter and help coach out to bring in the talent where needed. I also put together a pretty mean gameplan and have a good court sense, especially on the defensive side of the ball."

Former head coach of the 2001-2002 Kentucky state championship team should bring us Rams a solid recruiting class with the help of coach Bud Webber.

Billy Armstrong http://www.mgoblue.com/images/basketball-m/03-04/mugs/ramsey.jpg

We asked Billy Armstrong the same question. Here's what he had to say.

"I run a good offense. I will also help out in the scouting area. I just have a feeling this is gonna be a team to watch out for. Coach Webber is a very talented coach. Add me and Coach Dennis I feel that's a dangerous combination."

This is looking like one of the best fordham coaching staffs we've seen in a long time.

RAMS FALL TO TIGERS 70 TO 55

The Tigers started out hot outside scoring their first 6 points with ease. Then Fordham started playing solid defense. Fordham closed the gap down to 1 but couldn't seem to get the lead. Towards the end of the half Fordham went on an 8 to 2 run. Then it went back and forthe with the halftime score being Tigers-35 Rams-30. Starting the half both teams made 4 consecutive field goals. Memphis got theirs off of making crazy shots, Fordham off of good ball movement. The game stayed pretty close up until Memphis went off, gaining a 9 point lead. With 2 and a half minutes left the Tigers had an 11 point lead. After that Fordham had to force bad shots and foul. The Rams fell to the tigers 70 to 55. Here are game stats.l

DREW WILLIAMSON LOSES STARTING JOB

http://www.fordhamsports.com/action_shots/MensBasketball/Williamson-SJU.jpg Drew Williamson's teacher informed coach Webber that Drew was slacking off in class. Drew had just failed a test. Although he still has a C+ and holds a C average Bud feels he does not deserve to start.

"He's a great player. Can hit his jumpshot and play some nice defense. Although he is still holding a C average we don't feel he should start. He will still play we just want him to know that grades ARE important. I told you guys right from the beggining that I would NOT tolerate grades slipping. If he starts putting a little more effort into his schoolwork he should start next week."

This is getting ridiculous. I know grades are important but come on, Drew is still passing and holding a C average. I'm glad he's still going to play but let the kid start, wait until if he fails, that's when you take him out of the lineup. I guess he feels above average grades are neccesary. If they lose next game at Siena I know he is going to get grilled about not letting Drew Williamson start. I guess we'll just have to see how it turns out.

John Blackwell will be starting next week.

Bud Webber: No, John'll get the job done. Coach Buggs, take the big men down to the left side of the court for some defensive drills. Billy, bring the guards down to the right side for some shooting drills.

Drew Williamson: ( After Practice) Yo John

John Blackwell: Wussup?

Drew Williamson: You know I beat you anyday in a shootout

John Blackwell: Yea, ooook

Drew Williamson: Let's go, all around the world, same spots from practice.

John Blackwell: Whatever, let's go

Drew Williamson: You have no skills!

They shot all 10 shots 5 times. John Blackwell went 40 for 50. Drew Williamson went 29 for 50.

Drew Williamson: 1 on 1, unless you skurred

John Blackwell: What's your problem?

Drew Williamson: Let's go!

John Blackwell beat Drew Williamson 11 to 7. Drew Williamson gave John Blackwell a little shove and threw the ball at him. Then he walked out of the gym.

Fordham http://www.fordhamsports.com/images/RAM-Logo.gif Siena http://www.siena.edu/athletics/images/dog.jpg
Both teams came out hitting a nice three with their SF. Siena went on a 7-0 runand were up 12 to 5. John blackwell(replacement for Drew Willliamson) stopped the run with a long mid-range shot. John Blackwell also hit the fast breakd fadeaway to give Fordham their first lead. Drew Williamson comes in for the first time almost halfway through the first half. Coach Webber puts in a three guard offense, letting Drew Williamson and John Blackwell play together. Right away John Blackwell hits a three. Drew Williamson then had a miss. It was tied 34 to 34 at half. Early in the second half Drew Williamson hit a beautiful three through double coverage. With 2 minutes left your Rams were down 57 to 61. Drew Williamson BLACKS the shot leading to a Marius Robers fast break bucket. Blackwell makes a fast break bucket to bring it to 2 with 1 minute
