View Full Version : Hangs on loading after first Franchise game - grrr!

Ok, so this has happened three times in a row.
Time to call it a bug.
I play my first Franchise game and when I exit the status screen to go back to the Franchise menu, I get the 2KSports logo and "LOADING...". The dots on loading are scrolling, and I decided to let it run for a while to see if it just takes forever or something. It's been 45 minutes and nothing.
Anyone else having the problem? Maybe a few of you could try and see if it affects you as well.
Disappointing. I was planning on eating some turkey and taking my Sharks through the first few weeks of their season...
And I paid $60 for this? Looks like I'll have to head back to original XBOX lo-rez land. Was hoping that the orig-xbox 2k6 would work in emulation on the 360. SOL on that one too :(
Devs???

Oh - thought it would be helpful to mention that I can hit the X-menu button and it brings up the dashboard status screen.
So, the box isn't hanging, just the game.
jmann2k1
November 24th, 2005, 07:29 PM
That the 2K games don't like it if you're messing with the X-menu while they're loading and such. Also, they don't like it if you go into them while a video is playing off of the Hard Drive. It's like the video is still trying to run in the background or something, you just can't see or hear it. I found this out by trying to load up hockey while the stupid titanic video was playing and then it tried to load my settings, profiles, etc... and it seemed to lock up, but it didn't. it just Took FOREVER to load those tiny tiny files. Try rebooting and seeing if this works for you. Don't mess with the HDD at all while it's loading. This seems to cause lockups.
Hope it helps,

Nope, never messed with the X-menu thing until I noticed that it was stuck on the loading screen.
I just used the button to make sure that the box hadn't totally crashed...

I get the exact same problem. After every game when the load screen comes up it freezes. I'm gonna take it back and get another copy.

Same with me. This really bites because it only does it in Franchise mode. I have tried playing about ten games and it hangs everytime.
One thing I also notice is that the highlight reels don't play between periods or after the game.
This seems to be a huge problem. Perhaps it has something to do with the default settings in the dashboard?

I'm having the same problem. I'm going to take my copy back and hopefully EB will exchange it. Hope that fixes the problem. I really like the gameplay, which really makes it disappointing and so frustrating. I get the general feeling that this game was really rushed to make it out for the launch.

I am having the same problem, no matter if it's in a quick game, franchise or season. I can take a buggy $20 game, but I am furious about an unplayably-buggy $60 game!
I really hope they release a fix, and fast!

It's happening to me after every game in every mode now. Even if I quit during the game.
The highlights won't play in between periods or after the game either.
I tried erasing all profiles and saves and still no go.

wait for a patch or exchange the game ?
i get the same problem as emandoc and it makes the game unplayable.

Well I just exchanged my copy for another one and it still does the same thing. Tried deleting all my files, and creating a new profile, that didn't solve it. The weird thing is it worked for almost 2 weeks with no problems and now all of a sudden it won't work. Hopefully its a simple fix, but my fear is it is not going to be.

December 6th, 2005, 07:11 PM

Is 2ksports will do something about it ?

Same here. Sunday night it hung twice while playing online and got two negative feedbacks because of that. After that, whenever exiting from a local game to the menu, it hung. I thought it was my disc too. But, after exchanging a brand new one from EB, the same thing happened.
Finally tried removing the HD, it started working again. It brought me back to the "Save profile" screen. If I put the HD back, the same problem happened again. Seems like it got stuck going to the HD to search for profiles. However, other times it has no problem loading profiles.

Sounds like it has something to do with the harddrive.
When I first started playing nhl everything worked fine. After playing many other games and downloading stuff to the hd, nhl freezes.
If I didn't have so many games saves I would try deleting everything on the drive.

I tried with moving everything to the memory card and still got the same problem.
I notice that if you just put one profile and saved setting the game work.

I just tried that and it works. One thing I hadn't tried was saving the settings before starting a franchise. I have to go to work so I can't test this any further, but I entered and quit out of a Quick Game with no hang.
Will test more when I get back.
Thanks Zlat.

I tried having only one profile in the system, it (after a Quick Game or Hit the Ice) still did not work. The only time I can get it to work is when the HD is disconnected.
Did anyone also downloaded the EA Madden demo before having this problem?

I think I tried creating a new profile and saved it before going into a game, same problem.
I think whenever there are profile or settings changes (e.g. new achievements) that need to be saved after a game, it will try to access the HD and fails.

Just got a reply from 2K tech support. Did not help. I sent back the following reply:
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hi,
The problem happens while I am not using the guide button.
1. I have no 3rd-party controllers or devices. There is only the wireless controller that came with the console that is connected.
2. The console and the power supply are both cool and well ventilated. The problem happens even when the machine is used for the first time in the day.
3. Already tried deleting all the saved files. Did not help. I cannot go online or make any save if I remove the HD.
4. No, I don't have two Xbox 360 systems. But, my three other games work on the console. Of course Microsoft would tell me to contact the game developer.
The game is practically unplayable now.
If the problem is corrupted save files, how can I clean it up. As I mentioned, I already tried deleting all the NHL 2K6 files in all my profiles.
Please, please, please help!!!

At this point in time we suggest to refrain from using the Xbox 360 guide button while loading any portion of this game to avoid this freeze issue. If the game continues to freeze even though you are not using the Xbox 360 guide button then try the following:

So if we reformat the harddrive, losing all of our save games in the process, whos to say it won't happen again? That is a terrible solution. The harddrive was fine to begin with and no other game is affected.
I don't know what to think, say or do.

I will buy a mem card and backup all my saves. I will then reformat the hd and, one by one, put the saves back on the hd trying the game in between to see if I can locate which game save or download is corrupting the drive.
That is something the testers at 2ksports should be doing.
What game saves do you guys have on your hd's right now?
Mine = PDZ, COD2, Condemned, Halo2, NFS, Kameo, Amped 3, Quake 4.
I also have downloaded Madden demo, Nba Live demo and Smash TV demo.

I tried deleting all the 2K6 data on my hard drive before, but it did not help.
I think when you are using the mem card profile, after the game it will just go back to the same profile on the mem card and ask you whether you want to save it. It does not have to access the hard drive in this case, so no problem. Now, if you move the working profile from the mem card to the hard drive, would it choke on something on the hard drive?
Can you go back to using the hard drive again? Or do you forever have to use mem card with this game?

That might be the problem since i had a core version (no premium available) i bought a memory card to save everything on it and last week (thusday) bought the hard drive and move everything to the hard drive the game was still working after this.I downloaded allmost all the live arcade demo and downloaded need for speed and nba.My game was still working.
Downloaded madden, kameo and i starting having problem.I tried many thing like using only the memory card but i had the same problem. It seem it's a profile error and since it can't locate a profile the game stays stuck on loading like chaos said.

I read this in another forum and so far it has worked.
First, I put my roster file on the memory card and reformatted the hard drive (but I'm not sure that was really necessary).
Now here's what seems to have worked (3 season games in a row without a freeze):
Edit your roster file (I selected a player and changed one attribute) but DO NOT SAVE the roster file. Instead, use it to start a new season and save the season.
I then took the roster file off the hard drive and moved it to the memory unit, so that all I have on the HDD is the season file, one profile and settings.
I don't understand why that seems to have worked but so far it has.
Give it a try, nothing to lose everything to gain!

Before everyone goes and reformats their hard drives, know that you can't recover the game Hexic once it is deleted.
I would imagine all the other content that was included with the HD would be gone for good as well.
There must be a way to fix this without reformatting (which I still don't know if it works).

After I reformatted I copied the roster file back to the HDD then I modified it and started a season.

For some reason when you have a roster save present, it causes all the problems.

Here what i got after trying all the solution 2ksports technical support gave me.
If you have tried all the solutions I gave you, then you should be able to determine if the error you are experiencing is due to a corrupt save file on the hard drive/memory card, a defective Xbox 360 console or a defective disc. If you have a hard drive/memory card issue, you may need to erase all the files off of your hard drive to correct this issue. If it is a disc issue, we suggest exchanging the disc out and if it is a console issue, you should contact Microsoft to have them check out your console.
Is there any good games on 360 beside since i think if this continue like il exchange the game since i know the 360 is not defective and i tried playing only with a memory card it wouldn't work. And if the game can't support well the hard drive why should i delete ll of my file for 1 defective games.
The only solution i can see is playing without the hard drive and using a memory card when playing 2k6 and putting the hard drive back when finish 2k6 or playing other games.
Everything was working well and suddenly the game doesn't work ? If it's a corrupted file is it a profile a setting or a downloaded roster. And if you have more than 1 profile which one of them.Usually 2k6 as better product than ea but this time they are really are unbeatable for the most stupid error a game can have.
Il continue to try to find what the problem is though.

To fix the problem, I had to delete all the "Gamer Profiles", not just the NHL 2K6 profiles, but the Xbox 360 System user profiles that contain saves for all the other games as well.
If i move the gamer profile to a memory card and if one is corrupted il have to delete any way since 2k6 will have problem again.
No, you don't want to restore the corrupted profile ever again. Delete it for good. Don't bother saving it to the memory card.
I don't understand why 2k6 have problems and all the other games i have work perfectly.
It must have created a corrupted 2k6 file within the Gamer Profile that only 2k6 would know about it and try to read it. Who knows!
If you have a memory card, I'd recommend that you back up you "working" Gamer Profile frequently until 2K have a patch for the problem.
Zlat
December 12th, 2005, 03:50 PM
If they release a patch or else the game will never work unless you delete a file of another game and this is not a good solution only if you don't care about the other files but some people spend hours on a game and now you have to delete another game save for 2k6 to work.
2ksports has do to something.
thanks for finding the problem.

December 12th, 2005, 05:57 PM
I believe there may be one serious complication with regards to 2K creating a patch. I'm not sure that the company is recognizing there is even a problem. When I first detected this same issue, I sent a couple of e-mails to tech support. Unfortunately, as of a week ago, they were saying that it was most likely a console issue. This is even after I explained this occurred with multiple copies of the game.
The most frustrating thing is that it seems as if all of the tech support for this game is handled by the same individual. Both the e-mails and the phone calls to the number listed in the game manual go to s Christian Scatena at 2K Sports. It seems as if he's the individual who has to be convinced that this is a real issue.

I got a reply from the same guy and he said to format my harddrive as his only solution. he said they are looking to see if its a file that has been downloaded off the net.
I have two 360 gamer profiles and they are both wrecked... when one went, they both went. So I cant see it being a corrupt gamer profile. It started happening after I downloaded the November roster and started a Franchise. After my first game is just stayed on the load screen.. it did it in quick game and it even did it in the pregame demo mode. I erased stuff, moved stuff. Tried everything I could think of.
No one knows how to really fix this yet I guess without using a memory card or erasing everthing?

I have the same problem as well, and this is the only game at launch that's given me troubles. I've tried all the "solutions" and none of them have worked. To suggest that someone format their hard drive is foolish IMO. I've got PDZ, COD2, Quake 4, Madden, Zuma, Spades, Billiards, Hexic, and Hearts saves, so there's no way I'm formatting the hard drive and getting rid of saves for other games for this one game.

It seems as if the greatest challenge now is to get 2K Sports to acknowledge there's a problem and that it is most likely associated with the most recent roster update.

Anyone tried deleting this last roster save and going back to the October one or the default one to see if it works? Just Curious

If your gamercard were corrupt, then shouldn't this be showing up in other games as well? I've had zero problems out of my other games (except for Spades locking up and MS knows about that)

Its obvious to me its the November roster update. Everyone who says they have this problem has also downloaded the roster and can either confirm it happened just after or just arent sure, but no one has said they downloaded it and it worked fine after. How much more do they need before they say "Hey guys, your right, its an error with the roster update and we are working on a fix"
Its very dissapointing to know they dont really care about the consumer.

I really don't know how they're gonna fix it if the file has somehow corrupted your gamer profile. I'm gonna give em a couple more days then I'm either trading it in while the value is still 20 something or I'm selling it on EBAY.

create an offline profile, move all your saves over, erase your live profile... recover it.. then copy your saves back over and see what happens...

I did almost the same thing to fix mine 5 days ago, and it is still working. Only difference is I don't have a memory card to move the old saves over. So I lost all my saves.
I deleted all my Gamer Profiles on the system, and then recovered my Xbox Live account. I don't have a memory card, so all my game saves are gone forever. Started the game up and recreate a new profile in NHL 2k6. Played a Quick Game and then quited, no problem. Played a Hit the Ice and then quited, no problem. So, my problem was caused by a corrupted gamer profile.
Don't know how long this would last before the Gamer Profile get corrupted again.

What I did... I had my xbox live gamer profile and then I had one that wasnt connected to live that I use mostly...
If you dont have a memory card... just make an offline profile... move the game saves over. I just had my profile settings and a roster, no franchise or season or anything else..
anyway.. once the saves are in an offline profile.. delete your xbox live profile. Then go to join xbox live and choose recover your account... once you recover it.. turn your machine off.. then turn it back on and use your offline profile for your game.
This is just what I have done, and it has worked for me.

I've just had this problem for the first time. I'm about 4-5 games into my franchise and it is now hanging up at the Loading... screen after the game. It's weird, when I first got the game, it was quick to get to the save screen when I wanted to save something. For the past couple hours when I went to save something, it would say "Checking harddrive" for a few seconds before it got to the save screen. This is horrible, it may ruin the game for me altogether.
On a side note- In NBA 2k6 there have been many people (including me) that have noticed something weird. At halftime when they are talking about key players, it usually runs a highlight reel. After a few games, it stopped doing that and just showed still shots of the players. Weird stuff. 2ksports you are starting to worry me.

Nothing was working for me so I backed up my game saves and went ahead with the reformatting. I lost my PDZ saves, but that is not a big deal because the I wasn't that far into it.
So far, so good.
The only thing that bothers me is if I try to copy a game save from my mem card to the hdd, I get a message stating that I won't be able to get anymore achievments from the games if using these saves.
The only solution is to play the games using the profile from the memcard.
Will I have to unplug the hdd everytime I play a game from the memcard to avoid corrupting my hdd profile?

Try using a gamerprofile that isnt connected to LIVE. Thats what I have done and it works for me. You can probably still play other people with your other gamer profile but for actually storing game saves and stuff...
This is just what I did.. I used an offline profile for everything.. then I thought I would use my LIVE gamerprofile to download rosters and start a franchise and thats when the game konked out on me.. so try using an offline gamer profile for all your main hockey playing.

I've got the same issue. The screen hangs at the 2k6 Loading screen. I don't have any 3rd party hardware attached. The xbox is cool and well ventilated. I'm not hitting any buttons at all at the time. I've attempted to remove the save files and create new ones upon starting NHL 2K6.
I feel quite disappointed that suge a huge issue could get past the 2kGames QA people. I mean I know they're pushed to release by a certain date but come on. This is unplayable except as an arcade type game since it crashes (and thus fails to save any progress) after EVERY game!
Disappointed!

I,ve tried 3 brand new nhl2k6 game discs and they all do the same thing ...hang on the loading data screen....Its not the game its the dvd drive in the 360 the optical lens is really senstive and has trouble reading the data so it just hangs there.I was told this buy a guy who works for microsoft and works on the 360 console he told me to return it and get it repaired.so I called microsoft and they told me that it is becoming a common problem and they were going to send me a brand new console after they recieved mine...the rep told me that the most common problem they are getting with the console is it is freezing and locking up...Its not the game ...to note..Ive played and finished 3of the five games I have and didn,t have one problem with any of the other ones..so If you are getting the same problem I had maybe you should send yours back before your warranty runs out!!!

Had mine exchanged last week, what it is is the laser is burning game discs. I bought it @ EB they happen to be getting unreserved core systems coming in. All I had to do was exchange the console itself, I kept everything else all you have to do is re program the wireless controller. The only thing I lost was the silver drive drawer plate woo ptee doo!
I prefer to have a console that works properly! One of the staff memebers is aware of this problem and like he mentioned there were problems with the original xbox when it came out as well. So if it happens again I will get another replacement. As long as I dont have to fork out extra cash no biggie and it does not affect the files themselves. I still was able to carry on my franchise. Since all they had to do is transfer my original HD.

I finally found a solution that works great. NOTE- This "fix" will NOT allow you to play on Xbox Live, only good if you want to play a glitch free franchise mode/non xbox live mode.
I guess the problem is with SYSTEM profiles that are linked to Xbox live. Simply make a new profile (system profile, not on the game) and use that whenever you play. I've tried this and I'm 13 games into my franchise, the game never has had a problem contacting the hard drive, the replays are working during intermission, and it has overall been glitch free. Good luck guys.

I have the exact problem. I guarantee it has NOTHING to do with the the xbox laser "burning" the disk or anything to do with the xbox at all. I can't believe that 2ksports' BEST advice it to reformat your drive. Imagine....you get NHL 2K6 for you PC and it is bugged like this title......would they tell them to reformat also? Ridiculous. They need to fix this or at least address the problem. I would bet big bucks it is DIRECTLY related to the roster download in some way.

I sent 2ksports this email. I'll let you guys know if I hear anything. Personally, I will be keeping this topic bumped so that anyone who visits this forum to check out the game sees this topic right off the bat.
****o,
My NHL xbox 360 game no longer works. It constantly freezes after ALL game modes (except party mode) when exiting the game. As a result, I cannot save any progress in the game. If you take a moment to visit your forum, you will see a 10 page (and GROWING) thread about this problem. The first post recognizing this problem was posted on November 24th! Almost a month and a half ago. I have NO problem with any of my other titles. (Tiger Woods, Quake 4, Call of Duty 2, Perfect Dark Zero, Dead Or Alive 4, Project Gotham Racing, Condemned, King Kong) Your game has somehow screwed up the way it deals with my gamercard. I downloaded the roster update and I believe that was when things started locking up. My 360 is well vented, I have no 3rd part controllers. Your suggestions to others to “reformat” the drive is, in my opinion, ridiculous. Surely there must be a way for you to address the problem or at least let us know if you are going to try to address it. It seems that this is the ONLY game out of the 9 games I own that has any difficulty of this type. So, if the suggestion that I wipe all of my game data off my drive for 8 other titles to stop your game from locking up is the only solution you have, I assume you are working to come up with a better one. Could you take a moment to inform me as to the progress with this issue? May I also suggest that you drop by the forum and let the numerous other people who are having this problem that you are actually aware of it?
Please advise,

the same thing happened to be to i've ended up calling microsoft and the only way to fix it was to format my harddrive, i knew it wasn't the xbox because all of my other games worked with no problem, i can't recall when it happened though but i did get through a full franchise season i also downloaded the roster updates and i had two profiles one for offline and one for online.since i have formatted my harddrive i've had no problems i only have one profile and i didn't download the roster updates.so for those of you still having problems i can tell you the only way to fix the problem is to format your harddrive, and start all over again.

My 2K6 was working perfectly for the first month or so. Recently, however, it starting to, as well, hang up after a quick game, or season game, at the Loading screen. It never does load. I can also get access to the dashboard to shut down and re-start the game. I thought at first it was the disc, took it back to Toys R Us, and got a new one. Got home, only to find the same problem ocurred. I have deleted the profiles, all tournament info, etc, and saved data, and it still has the same hanging problems. I have no problems with any of the other games that I have such as King Kong, Kameo, PGR, Perfect Dark, etc. I just want to know once and for all if it is a software glich in 2K6, or my XBox360. Does anyone have a definitive answer? Where is 2Ksports.com in all of this? I have called and left messages 3 times now with no response . . .
getting very dissatisfied that I may start an e-mail petition stopping anyone from purchasing this game!

OK EVERYONE!
Just got off the phone with a Christian at 2KGames. After explaining to him the freezing problems on the loading screen, he has suggested the following:
1. upon loading a game, do NOT touch the glow button at all as this has been known to cause problems.
2. If 1 above still does not fix the problem, then remove the hard-drive, and re-start the game with the hard-drive removed. Play through a game, and go to the load screen. If it then works, we now know that there is a file on the hard-drive that 2K6 does not like. Finding that file, though, is difficult.
3. Final suggestion was to re-format the hard-drive as he has had other people finding success when they do this. Unfortunately, you need to walk through this with Microsoft AND you will lose all data from other games. This is not to say that you won't encounter the same problems once you play those games again, and re-create the so-called phantom file!
Coming from a computer background, and deeply involved in programming major systems for manufacturing companies, I am shocked that this software was released with so many shallow errors. It is evident that the basic error event routines were not written in the code. Very dissapointing!
Craig
ps. anyone out there already try the suggestions above? Success or Failure?

It seems like the problem is related in some way to the IN GAME user profile (not the 360 gamer profile). The same thing happens to me (system hang on exit of a game) but when I deleted my NHL profile and restarted the game it asks me to create a new profile with favorite team. I did but when it asked to save it I said cancel.
Everything worked fine after that as I started and exited every game type (even franchise) and it worked. However, just when I thought it was fixed I played a complete franchise game and the same thing happened AFTER I began unlocking challenges on the profile that I did not save. So something at the point of where NHL 2K6 goes looking for the in game profile in order to save these achievements is making it go screwy.

SO I have tried everything short of formating my Hard Drive, as I believe that 2k should find a solution other then telling us to go to MS for an issue created by 2k's save problems. I only have 2 solutions left, and they both involve a memory card. I thought I would post them here in case anyone has access to the tools needed.
If you have a memory card and a local friend with a functional 2k6 profile (ie does not have any symptoms) GO and copy their 2k6 profile and place it on your hard drive. There are 2 things to try on this troubleshooting. First, I would make sure the profile has the same name as the **** one on the trouble machine and just overwrite the bad profile. From what I have read, and experienced, it is the game profile and the game itself accessing a corrupted portion of the HDD that causes the freeze, so if we can fix the profile, we can fix the problem. The second thing you can try, is copying your friends profile to a vigin game idrectory, which I don't know, but you'll likely have to have one save file in place, like a setting file or possibly a screenshot. (DO NOT use a roster, as I believe the 2k roster update are also a cause of corruption) I will post an update in a few weeks when I can stomach the purchase of a mem card just for this issue.
FOr those of you that still have faith in 2k trying to solve this issue, I will give you this link (http://opm.1up.com/do/my1Up?publicUserId=5545842), (be wary, there is a profane word at the end of that page)it is only one case, but I can't believe how close minded the ONE tech support agent is to this problem. Sure, formating your HDD will resolve the issue, but what if it happens again? Are we supposed to just accept that your product is flawed and get suckered into 2k7, all we are asking for is some REAL support!!!!

i have formatted mine about a week ago, i've had no problems with the game after that i only have one profile for online and offline ive even created my own team and started a franchise . i think the problem was with multiple profiles on your harddrive and the game would hang on the loading screen because it didn't know which profile to save to. i did not download the roster updates either. anyone else think that was the problem. you guys can keep complaining here on the forums about the freezing or do what i did its up to you. i'm happy with mine now. or you can buy a memory card and remove your harddrive everytime you play the game, sounds like a pain in the butt to me.later

what's really strange is that it appears to be different things for different people... for example, i was having the freezing problem after about 16 games into my season. i tried the whole online and offline profile trick and it still did it, i went out and bought a memory card and tried that method and it didn't work, and of course i tried the "delete everything and start over" method, all with the same exact result of it still freezing. then i heard someone say that it could be due to editing your lines. sure enough, if i started a seaon and switched anyone on my lines it froze up. if i left them the way they were it didn't. and this is with the most recent roster update as i had already figured out that wasn't causing the problem. even when i had an injury and it asked me if i wanted to have the cpu auto-adjust, if i let them do it it was fine. if i did it even just replacing the injured player it froze up on me. so basically, i'm using the same original profile i had before (i had transferred it to the memory card and went ahead transferring it back) with the latest downloadable rosters and it works like a charm. just don't ask me to edit my lines... lol

I know this is a bit frustrating and you ask yourself why you paid good $$$ for a game that has such a nasty bug, but I have a solution for this bug but it will cost you a bit more $$$.
Follow the following instructions:
- Purchase a memory card
- Insert mem card
- Create a new log-in and do not use your old log in
- Transfer all your NHL 2K6 files onto your mem card with the new log-in
- Once all the files are transferred turn off the console
- Remove the HD but leave the mem card inserted
- Turn on the console
- Load the files using the new log-in. Remember if you don't create a new log-in then you won't be able to load the save files from your mem card
- Now load your franchise file
- You should now be able to play franchise mode without the hang
It's a pain to keep removing the HD but it's better then reformatting it and not knowing when this bug will happen again and reformatting your HD will erase all other files and downloaded content which can be a pain to re-download.
As for the online hang I have not encounter it yet, but lets hope 2K Sports can come out with a downloadable patch for this bug in the future.
I hope this helps folks.

Yes, that will work too. It seems the only sure way to fix it is by getting a memory card. I solved it the same way just the other way around. I posted the solution in another thread but since no one seems to be reading it I will post it again here:
I, like many others, have experienced the dreaded franchise freezing at the end of a match. I think I have found a fix, albiet a $39.99 one:
First of all, the following taboos I have proven:
It is not:
-a HDD issue
-a "corrupt" gamer profile
-a bad roster download file
-an issue with pressing the XBOX guide button during NHL 2K6
-the XBOX 360 overheating (a common cop out)
That said, it appears to be a bug within NHL 2K6 in that it is unable to recognize multiple XBOX gamer profiles (the profiles created at the dashboard). Most people probably only have one gamer profile for theirselves and that is it however I have about six people that play on the 360 and each person has their own gamer profile so I cant just simply delete them all.
I solved the issue by purchasing a 64mb memory card and moving all the other gamer profiles (except mine) onto the memory card and left mine and NHL 2K6 files on the HDD. I then started the game up and played it and it played just fine. The highlight replays even worked. It even accessed the XBOX guide blade that asks me to which device I wanted to save my in game profile when I... drum roll... actually completed a match!
Also, I should mention that after I moved all the other gamer profiles over to the memory card I left the memory card plugged in and it still had no problem. I didnt have to do any further madness like unplugging the card or disconnecting the HDD and playing it from a solitary profile on the memory card (although I suspect that would work as well).
What I may try next is exactly that. I will probably create a single profile on the mem card and move my NHL files over to it and just play it from the card instead of the HDD. As it seems that as long as you isolate one gamer profile to a save device it should not have any confusion deciding where to save.
So from the looks of it, it seems that the testers may not have taken into account that more than one GAMER profile might have existed on the 360 when they were testing it. Sounds like an easy mistake to make. I agree already that spending an additional $40 to fix the issue by getting a memory card is a bit... extreme but I kind of needed one anyway to move my stuff to another 360.
Anyway, this stuff may already be known but I am just trying to help my fellow gamers out. Let me know if there are any other solutions.

Look, I like a good hockey game as much as the next guy, but this load screen hang-up issue is absolutely INSANE!
I cannot believe that there are people out there willing to re-format their HDs for what is OBVIOUSLY a problem with NHL 2K6!
What we need is a response from 2K, not to re-format our drives.
I dunno about you, but I will be keeping my eyes open for an update or patch. If I don't see one within a few weeks then this one will be going in the GARBAGE.... period.
2K saying this problem is not thier fault does not make it so.
Insulting... This is how we are treated for supporting their products. And to think that I am one of the suckers who went ON AND ON about how 2K was "all about the gamers" when EA put the dagger in NFL 2K. I feel like a sucker....

^ EXACTLY. This is obviously some kind of glitch within the game itself, and I'll be ****ed if I'm going to format my HDD because 2K can't effectively test their software before selling it to suckers like ourselves for $60.
I changed NOTHING from the time it was working perfectly to when it started freezing up. But I guess it's my fault, or the HDD's.
Whatever 2K... I've already lost faith in EA, and the shoddy customer support and pathetic cop-outs are quickly making me doubt 2K as well.
This is absolutely absurd that a product could be released with a bug like this. What is even more absurd is that NO ONE from 2K will respond to this thread. But apparently they are more than willing to take their $60 "coaster" and shove it up my rear end unlubed.

All,
I have tried everything but re-format my HDD, and I will not do it. I will not delete my other profiles either. This is the second disc that I tried and it has the same problem.
I SUGGEST WE ALL SEND OUT A MASS E-MAIL TO ALL OF OUR FRIENDS, ETC TO BOYCOTT ANYONE FROM PURCHASING THIS GAME OR ANY OTHERS FROM 2KSPORTS. THE LACK OF SUPPORT CONCLUDES THEIR GUILT IN PUTTING OUT AN INFERIOR PRODUCT. IF THERE ARE ONLY 10,000 OF US EXPERIENCING THIS PROBLEM, THAT IS $600,000 IN SALES FOR A BOGUS GAME.
I AM TAKING BACK MY GAME FOR THE SECOND TIME. THANK GOODNESS I STILL HAVE THE BILL. I CALLED TOYS 'R US, AND THEY ARE WILLING TO EXCHANGE FOR A DIFFERENT GAME. NOW THAT IS CUSTOMER SUPPORT.
LET'S TRY THIS MASS E-MAIL:mad:

This is absolute ********. I really want to play this game, and I CAN'T and I probably never will be able to again. I don't want my money back, I just want to enjoy my god **** hockey!
I was about game 15 in my first franchise year and it just randomly happened.
The word 'Loading...' is permanently fried in my eyes. The biggest kick in the *** is that 2K won't claim responsibility for their shoddy programming. Everyone knows this is a pretty port of the original XBOX game, and they obviously overlooked a couple of things while porting it over.
I don't know how easy a patch would be to create to fix this problem, but by the sounds of it, they aren't even addressing the issue, which REALLY ****es me off. What am I supposed to do with this game? Stare at it, wishing it worked? All the while getting more and more ****ed off and, god forbid, looking forward to EA's NHL 2007.
Way to go 2K, you've lost yet another future customer, and with stiff competition, even 1 person makes a difference.

Look, I'm all for 2K Sports coming up with a solution. I'm still ****ed that I had to back up my profiles onto a memory card that ran me another $40. But, if you want the game to work right now, you have to format the HD and put only your main live profile on there. If you get a flat tire, are you going to drop a few bucks to get it fixed then go after goodyear or are you going to sit on the side of the road and throw a temper tantrum until goodyear decides to come fix your issue? It's that simple at this point. The problem is definitely with the game and how it handles multiple profiles on the hard drive. Just moving the profiles off doesn't stop the problem. Formatting then restoring your main profile from XBOX Live seems to fix the issue.....

I'm sorry, but there's no excuse for me having to format my hard drive.
If I bought a tire from Goodyear that blew 15 minutes after I bought it, you're **** right I would throw a temper tantram, and THEN I would get it replaced with one that was fine. In the case of NHL 2K6, getting a new one won't make a **** difference.
I'm ****ed and I will STAY ****ed until this issue is resolved. I'm not deleting anything off my hard drive.

****o, *edit* (ok Hi...can I say Hi?)
I own this game as well. I share the same issue that every one else is experiencing as well.
Someone has already mentioned that a Class Action Law suit does not really pay anything to the consumer, and that is correct. However, a CAL is something that an attorney will pursue since it does benefit them financially. If the case seems to have sort of argument then they will pursue it.
Part of my benefit package at my place of employment is free legal service through a company called Hyatt Legal Plan. I simply pay $15.00 per pay period for this service.
Monday I will be contacting them to set up a time to meet with an attorney about the matter. Heck, why not? It cost me close to nothing to look into it. Hopefully the law firm I meet with will see some sort of dollar signs and pursue this case.
I think this is the only real way to get 2K Sports to start giving us some feedback and answers.
I'll follow up here when I have an update.

Chad

This is retarded. Either I have to format my HDD and lose Hexic forever or spend 40 dollars on a memory card and have to constantly remove my HDD...
There must be a way for 2K Sports to fix this. I'm a loyal 2K Hockey customer since 2K3. I even bought 2K6 twice... I remember one year EA replaced all the Madden discs because you couldn't import your draft class. Clearly not being able to play at all is much more severe than that.

Okay this is strange I removed my hard drive and played a game and it worked fine. Which I suppose is the expected result. So I shut down my 360, put my hard drive in and tried it again and I played 2 franchise games without it stopping at the loading screen. Perhaps that would work for someone else?
Here's what I did:
1)Remove Hard Drive
2)Boot up 2K6
3)Put game on 1 minute periods and complete an exhibition game.
4)Shut Down 360
5)Put HDD back in
6)Boot up 2K6 and it worked properly...

I for one am not about to take all those steps. It just shouldnt be neccesary. The game should be fixed properly or recalled and refunded, bottom line! I want my money back and my copy of 2K6 for Xbox1. Has anyone ever seen one messege from Take-Two or Kush games in reguards to these issuse? I havent, are they just simply ignoring it?

Just wanted to mention, that if you are playing any game that relies on the clock in your 360, removing it will force you to re-set the clock every time you re-insert it.
The fact that 2K is ignoring this is insulting. They are no better than EA. At least EA would have offered me my money back by now.

Well, after reading these "loading screen freeze" posts for months and thanking my lucky stars that I was not seeing this problem, it finally happened to me. I got my system and NHL 2k6 around first week of December, and I have played the heck out of my system and this game especially (I'm a hockey freak and love my NHL 2k). I'm at game 72 of my season, and it has just been fantastic, with realistic stats, great playoff race, etc.
I noticed about a week ago that when I would go to save files, whether it was a profile, franchise, roster, etc...it was taking a little longer than usual. I thought at first that it was probably just a result of my internet connection, as it seemed to not go slow when i unplugged the ethernet cable from the system. Well, about two days ago, I finished a franchise game, went to exit, and it froze at "Loading......."
I immediately knew I had fallen victim to the same **** that everyone else on here had. I tried an exhibition game, played it, went to exit....same freeze at loading. I rebooted my system and it worked for one game, then started doing it again.
Somehow I managed to go alot longer than most of you without having this freezing problem, but it seems it has taken me down as well. Frankly, I can't believe anyone would resort to reformatting their HD to get the game to work....that is completely absurd and its pretty unreal that 2ksports tech support would suggest you do that. There's NO WAY i would reformatt my hardrive just to get this game to work, as it is obviously solely a problem with this game.
Anyway, I'm at work, but I was thinking that the only thing I have that could be an issue is that I have two profiles (one xbox live profile and one non-live). I never use the non-live one, as it was the one i created before I recovered my live account....I'm wondering if I only play under the non-live account if things will work...I think someone mentioned it worked for them earlier.
I will check when I get home. I'll try my best to try and isolate what this problem is (which as someone said earlier should be the job of someone at 2ksports, not us..). I WILL NOT reformatt my HD, I'll tell you that much.
I'll update soon.

Guys,
So I just messed around with this for about two hours, and basically tried everything short of reformatting my hardrive...and, of course, no results. I consider myself pretty knowledgeable about computers and technology, and quite frankly- this bug boggles my mind. I cannot understand how this happens, why it happens, or what it is linked to. The fact that it worked fine for 3 months then suddenly one day stopped working is insane. I haven't changed anything recently with savegames, downloads, etc....
This is pretty unacceptable really. What makes it worse is that this is a definite pattern with this franchise. Every year has some sort of horrible, show-stopping bug hidden in it. 2003 had the "injury bug" (where so many injuries would occur in franchise that it would actually freeze the franchise menu), last year had the famous "franchise freeze" (where the game would inexplicably refuse to go any further in a franchise once it got to a certain point, causing you to have to delete and restart), and now the "Loading..." bug.
This is sad. I know its only a videogame, but I completely adore hockey, and the NHL 2k series is the love of my life. Its so superior to the competition that its a joke, and its easily been the game I have played the most over the past 4 years. But eventually enough is enough....

 I too experienced these problems like the rest of you and got the standard response from the 2k Sports cust service dept, Christian. Blaming the using the Xbox guide button during loading, bad hard drive, non supported controllers, etc.... Basically blame everyone but themselves. I have a brand new Xbox, only microsoft Xbxox 360 wireless controllers, and a brand new hard drive. I never used the guide button during loading and my other two games work perfectly, Madden 06 and Tiger 06.
I just filed an online complaint with the better business bureau and I encourage all of you to do the same. Kush Games, a division of 2k Sports, is the game designer. They are located in Camarillo, CA. PLEASE follow thru and take the 5 minutes to file this complaint. Trying to sue them is not going to work, best bet is get the BBB breathing down their backs and make them make things right with all of us who spent $60.00 and expected a quality, working game. Just search the better business bureau under yahoo or google, it will pop right up.

I am having the same problem as well I was hopping for a fix but after 4 months with no fix yet I doubt I we will ever see one. I have bought every nkl 2k game since it was released for the dreamcast and if 2k sports does not make this right EA will be getting my money this fall.

Everytime I Try to save my franchise IT Locks Up and the screen says ALL my Saves are Corrupted.. ...
Everyone Else I know has this problem and the work around is to remove the HDD completely.... and using a Memory Card..
I shouldnt have to Pay another $40 to Play an Laready $60 Game...
2k Keeps Telling me to Reformat My HDD when nothing is wrong with it.. its a bug in their Title... and there've made no apparent effort to fix it.

Hi All,
Check out my thread for a working solution to Franchise freezing on loading screen:
http://www.2ksports.com/forums/showthread.php?t=79408
I'll paste it here for the lazy ones:
Hi All,
Just thought Id post my solution to the annoying lock-ups in franchise mode.
This has been a problem with the last 2 2K Hockey titles that were released.. I'd previously used the solution with prior versions.. so if you were experiencing this with another 2K title the solution may work for you as well.
PROBLEM:
The lock-ups are nearly 100% of the time caused by an invalid roster on a CPU controlled team. Go to FRONT OFFICE, ROSTERS, then cycle through the teams to find out which team has failed to fill their roster (totals are at the bottom of the screen I think).
SOLUTION:
The only way I have been able to force the offending team to fill its roster has been through trades. Go to the free agent list, pick up 3-4 lvl 70+ players... go to TRADES and drop as many players on that time from the free agent list that are required for them to accept. Make the trade.
Play a game.. and you should find that at the end of the game everything will load properly back to the franchise menu. If you ever have a lock-up again, simply wash-rinse-repeat.
If this is a duplicate post I'm sorry, just wanted to get it out there. If it isn't a duplicate can a mod please sticky this? It makes your franchise mode playable :D

Thanks Diderot,
I am having the same problem with the Tournament Mode..I played the first round no problem..2n round - 2nd game when the game finishes it goes to the loading...... screen and hangs...
Why would the roster be invalid now? (injuries perhaps?) i dont know

You're correct. It's almost always an injury and the CPU doesn't pull up a replacement from the minors or make an acquisition to fill the spot.
Turning off injuries, or following my steps are the only solutions I've found.
Frustrating little issue, considering it's been around for years and 2K just hasn't addressed it. You'd think their tech support would be able to provide this as a solution instead of the other responses I've seen some of you post.
Best of luck.

Iv had my 2K6 since day one, no problems until Saturday night. My buddy came over for a few games of hockey and oh my...the loading screen. Never had that problem before and we have played hundreds of games, so its not just happening in franchise. I havent even started a franchise yet. I definately know it has something to do with the rosters. The game worked fine up until they were downloaded. After that...nothing. BS man
This is absolute ****. After supporting 2K since dreamcast, and bashing EA every step of the way, we dont even get a response from 2K or Kush. Nice customer support.

Well, I just tried that solution that diderot posted and its no good, all teams in my franchise have full and proper rosters, and still it froze after my game i just played... It really is such BS, i too have loved 2k the whole way, making fun of all my friends who claim EA is way better, and now this happens? and after 14 pages of complaints they havnt bothered to find a solution????!?! In my version for my original xbox there was major glich that did not allow me to get past the 2nd game of the 2nd round of the 2nd year of my franchise, my buddy had a similar problem with his game too and there never was a solution... really ****ed, my team is so good I have Ovechkin and Kovalchuk and the same line and i cant even use them...

I can work around this issue by removing my hard drive. I have all my game saves on my memory unit. Make sure to power down your 360 before removing the HD.
Also, playing 3 different games before playing NHL 2K6 may work too. I have not tried this but it has been suggested.
