49ers Hire Logan to Lead the Men's Basketball Team
LONG BEACH (AP) - The Long Beach State University Athletics Department introduced its newest Head Men's Basketball Coach Sunday to lead its floundering program.
Athletic Director Bill Shumard tabbed Brian Logan as its 22nd Head Coach. It was a selection that came easily to Shumard. "Simply put, what Logan has done in the last three years has been outstanding. We look forward to what his teams can do on the court."
The 31 year-old Logan led the Metro State (CO) Roadrunners to three appearances in the NCAA Division II Men's Basketball Finals, coming out on top twice. His three-year record at the Denver-area school was 62-15.
His philosophy is simple, and it will not change no matter the opponent. "We've been successful by focusing on three things: rebound the hell out of the basketball, take good shots and have a blast on the court."
He looks forward to what this year will bring. "Everyone has expectations, but as long as we compete in the Conference Tournament - which to me means at least one win - we'll be successful."

49ers Shake Lineup: Cuts Watson and Benches Two Seniors
LONG BEACH (AP) - If the first couple of days are any indication on how the Long beach State University 49ers men's basketball team will turn out, we're in for a bumpy ride.
Newly hired Head Coach Brian Logan cut a McDonald's All-American and benched two seniors to make room for the new look 49ers.
"There is no room for players unwilling to accept the new way this program will be run. Last year, we were 6-17 and those days should not be duplicated," replied Logan on his weekly radio talk show.
Logan cut sophomore point guard Alvin Watson, a participant in the 2002 McDonald's High School All-American game. Sources believe that Watson violated unspecified team rules.
The 49ers also sent senior point guard Thomas Young and PF Stephen House to the bench, declaring sophomore point guard Kenny Patterson and junior power forward Tommy Cooley as starters.
"I truly believe that Cooley can be an All-Conference player. Patterson simply gives us a better three-point scoring threat than Young."
Regardless of the decision, Logan named Young, House, center Thomas Jackson and power forward Melvin McGee as captains. "To make it as plain as day, these are our captains because they are our seniors. No matter the playing time, this team will respect our seniors. The kids will play for them more than they'll play for themselves."

Long Beach faces SDSU Tuesday - Logan Names Starters
LONG BEACH, CA (AP) - Long Beach State University opens its 2003-2004 season against San Diego State University, beginning a seven-game road trip that gives the 49ers only one non-conference home game before the Big West conference season begins.
"We'll play anywhere and anyone,"stated 49er Head Coach Brian Logan. "We need to play people and take away what every home team should have, and that's a win."
The 49ers will face the Aztecs with a new look, even though LBSU lost only one senior from last year's 6-17 team. Here is a capsule of each of the named starters:
STARTERS

+ Three-point shooting and speed
- Shoots too many times for a PG
? Can he lead this new look team by passing and not shooting?

- Inconsistent outside of 15 feet
? Can he be the outside threat to take some pressure off the inside?
SF - Junior Brad Darag
+ Height and ability to play three positions
- Poor rebounding instincts despite 6'7" frame
? Logan wants him to shoot, rebound and pass - does he want to?

+ Solid offensive player when facing the basket
- Avoids inside and aggressive play due to slight frame
? Can he ever find a chip on his shoulder?

KEY BENCH

C - RS Sophomore Dusty James
+ Aggressive seven-footer
- Poor passer that does not take double teams well
? Can the 49ers afford NOT to play James when getting beat on the Boards?
SG - Freshman Cody Lawrence

Brad Darag - 22 points
Tuesday night
SAN DIEGO, CA (AP) - Brad Darag scored 22 and Long Beach State (1-0) took its first lead with just over a minute left in the game and held on to a 83-80 win against San Diego State Tuesday night in its first non-conference game for both teams.
"We stuck around and executed down the stretch," recalls 49er head coach Brian Logan. "We rebounded really well in the second half, nullifying their second chance opportunities."
The Aztecs (0-1) shot 58.8% from the field in the first half, but went cold in the last eight minutes of the game, shooting 5-24 in that span. 49er point guard Kenny Patterson hit a three-pointer with just over a minute to go to give LBSU its first lead at 81-80.
Thomas Jackson hit two free throws with 22 seconds left to give the 49ers a 83-80 lead. Aztec reserve guard Ronnie Jefferson missed a three-pointer as time expired that would have tied the ball game.

Below is a transcript from the 49ers weekly radio program.
WEAVER: Welcome to KRAI Radio's Weekly Chat with the Long Beach State 49ers head men's basketball coach, Brian Logan. This is Herb Weaver. We'll soon take your calls. Coach, good start to the year, any surprises?
LOGAN: Well, I thought we would certainly shoot better - 44.5% isn't going to cut it in the Big West. Overall, we're finding roles for the players and its starting to come together, but we have a long way to go. This next game against Pepperdine will show us how our progress is.
WEAVER: It seems to me that we find ourselves rushing shots, especially when coming from behind. How are we going to fix that?
LOGAN: Well, it all comes from running the offense. This team could average 80 points a game if we take good shots. Weav, you are right about shooting when behind. We haven't found a good groove. And that comes from not having a proper perspective at the point. KPat knows that.
WEAVER: Kenny Patterson - we all knew he could shoot - but you don't want him to do that, why?
LOGAN: Weav, he's the point guard, he starts the process of what we want to do on offense. Passing the ball, finding weaknesses in the defense, tempo, taking good shots. He knows he needs to get better at all of those things, but he has the tools to be very good.
WEAVER: You were taken to task about benching two seniors, Baker and House, and cutting Watson right away in the year. Has it turned out as well as it could be. Are the two seniors taking it well?
LOGAN: People may have perceived that benching these two men as a sign of weak play. I fully believe in the abilities that they've shown. I just think that their replacements would be better for the team in the long run. The seniors have been great, House and Baker have played at crucial times and have come up big so far, and I expect them to continue that play. We all do.
WEAVER: Your motto - regardless of opponent - is to rebound, take good shots and have a blast on the court. It looks like we've done one, not the other and the jury is still out on the third. What's your take?
LOGAN: First is great, second sucks and the third, you have to ask the players. I'm having a blast. As long as they put in the work, I'm going to let them go during the game. If problems come up during the game, I ususally wait until they are off the court to discuss it.
WEAVER: Thanks Coach, you take on Pepperdine tomorrow. What's the scoop.
LOGAN: People think we need to stop Dan Wilson, their shooter. I say, let himi have 30 points, as long as we keep in check people like Faulkner, their PG, or an unknown player. That second guy cannot have free looks, or score a lot. That's when you run into problems.
Look to see what the other Pepperdine players are doing on the court to judge how we're doing. If they are scoring, then we are in trouble. First off, though, we have to shoot better.
WEAVER: Good luck tomorrow, Brian, we'll see you here next week.

Dan Wilson
16 points
MALIBU, CA (AP) - The Waves were rough Saturday for LBSU, as Pepperdine won 79-69 Saturday night at home. The Waves (3-3) were led by Junior Guard/Forward Dan Wilson, with 16 points. Point Guard Antoine Faulker added 13 and power forward Antawn Watson finished with 11 points and 9 rebounds.
"We still need to shoot better. I was disappointed with the shots we took. We didn't deserve to win," sighed an exasperated 49er head coach, Brian Logan. "We just didn't do enough to get a victory."
Pepperdine took at 35-33 lead into halftime, thanks to Antoine Faulkner 11 points going into the break. "We needed to stop everyone else except for Wilson. Faulkner's points in the first half set the tone," replied Logan, now 2-1 in his first year with the Beach.
Pepperdine stretched the lead to 13 at 51-39, hitting six straight shots, with 10:19 left in the game. Than Dan Wilson kicked it in gear.
Wilson nailed a jumper from the left elbow and followed up with two threes, outscoring the 49ers 8-0 to push the lead to 59-39, too much for the 49ers (2-1) to recover.
LBSU shot only 43.3% from the field for the game, led by Brad Darag, with 15 points, 10 rebounds and 4 assists. "Our lone bright spot," declared Logan. Walter Cooley added 11 points for the 49ers, who face Minnesota next Thursday on the road.

Hey man, good legacy, i've been reading it. Shooting 44.5% is pretty good though, really. Most teams in the NCAA average around that, if not lower. The best team in the country is shooting 52%, and the 25th best is at 47%. Buy anyway, keep it up!

Brad Darag - 15 points
MINNEAPOLIS, MN (AP) - Brad Darag scored 15 points and Walter Cooley 13 to lead Long Beach State to a 59-52 victory at Williams Arena in Minneapolis Tuesday night.
The 49ers (3-1) held the Golden Gophers to 35.3% from the field, including 0-9 from 3-point range. LBSU shot 50% from the field.
Sophomore center Dusty James started for the 49ers, replacing senior Thomas Jackson. Jackson has been cold from the field, shooting 24.1%. "I can't understand it, it's one of those things,' sighed 49er coach Brian Logan. "TJ has been a solid contributor here, maybe he just needs a break. We could do much more, though, to get him the ball in better situations." Logan did not specify how long the benching would last.
The Gophers kept the game close in the first 39 minutes, thanks in part to 1 of 9 free throw shooting by the 49ers. LBSU went on a 7-0 run to open a 55-45 lead with 1:10 remaining to create the winning push.
The Gophers (3-3) were led by Phil Elliot's 14 points and Mychal Richardson's 10. The 49ers also led in rebounds 47-28, with James picking up 15 rebounds to led the squad.
LBSU heads home for the first time, taking on 1-8 Southern Utah University at the Pyramid on Saturday. They close out their non-conference schedule with games at Cal State-Sacramento and Colgate.

LONG BEACH, CA(AP) - Long Beach State University announced today that starting shooting guard Logan Harris will be out for Saturday's game against Southern Utah University with a sprained right wrist. "We are going to need to fill Logan's usual stat sheet with a couple of people on Saturday," said 49er Head Coach Brian Logan. "He does many things for us, from creating offensive opportunities to rebounding."
Harris, a 6-4 junior from Sherman Oaks, California, averages 6.8 points, 5.4 rebounds and 4.3 assists per game. He is the 49ers leading shot-blocker, averaging 2.1 per game. "He does so many things for us that produce points on the scoreboard for us, even though he doesn't score as much as he wants," beamed Logan, whose 49er team has started with a 3-1 record.
LBSU will start freshman Cody Lawrence in Harris' spot. "He will give us some offensive aggressiveness, which is what we need right now. He'll go to the hoop and create opportunties off the dribble."

The Lions closed the first half with a 6-0 run to trim the halftime lead by the 49ers to 30-27, but Lawrence took advantage of the Lions sending four players to the offensive glass to produce four quick layups.

49ers Escape 27-Point Deficit; Win 75-74

LONG BEACH, CA (AP) - Long Beach State took its first lead of the game with 1.3 seconds left with two Walter Cooley free throws to give the 49ers a 75-74 victory over UC-Riverside Saturday night in Big West Conference action.
"Unbelievable," yelled head coach Brian Logan over the roaring crowd. "We didn't panic, hit good shots and didn't expend a lot of energy coming back, even though we needed all of the time there was left."
The Highlanders took a 47-23 halftime lead, and extended it in the second half to a 53-26 lead with 14:58 remaining. The 49ers then went on a 12-2 run, spurred by two Kevin Patterson three-pointers, to cut the lead at 55-38.
The 49ers scored 52 points in the second stanza, and used a 17-4 run to trim the deficit to 4 at 68-64 with 1:35 remaining. A three-pointer by Cody Lawrence got the 49ers (11-2, 4-1) within one at 71-70 with :46 left.
That one-point lead held with 12 seconds left as the Highlanders' Dany Liberty was called for a charging foul with a 74-73 lead. The 49ers elected not to take a timeout. "We knew what we are going to run in that situation. Patterson took a quick look to our bench for the red flag (meaning timeout), didn't see it and he knew what to run," said a relieved Logan.
"We run those situations in practice all the time. Down by 1, 15 seconds left. We run hot options. We wanted to run a double baseline (screen for Cooley), but it got jammed," reviewed guard Kevin Patterson, who finished with 16 points, hitting all four of his three-pointers he took in the second half. We reversed it and gave Cooley a great look."
Cooley took the ball on the right block, pump faked and drew a foul from Pete Ward with 1.3 seconds remaining. "Ohh boy," sighed Cooley, who finished with 20 points to pace the 49ers. "All I needed was the first one."
He ended up getting both and Virgil Murphy missed a half-court shot at the buzzer to give the 49ers an improbable victory.
LBSU (75) - Harris 4-11, 1-2 9; House 1-4, 0-0 2; Cooley 9-23, 2-2 20; Jackson 1-8, 0-2 2; Patterson 6-10, 0-0 16; Smith 6-8, 1-1 13; Lawrence 6-12, 0-0 13.
UC-Riverside (74) - Torris Wolfe 2-3, 2-2 7; Herman Jones 0-0, 2-2 2; Seth Beatty 6-14, 3-3 15; Pete Ward 4-7, 0-0 8; Ivan Rushing 2-6, 0-0 4; Dany Liberty 2-2, 0-0 4; Rod Wells 5-11, 1-3 11; Virgil Murphy 4-8, 0-0 9; Jerry Barnes 3-8, 1-2 7; Tyler Wyatt 1-4, 0-0 2; Jemaicus Urbina 2-3, 1-2 5.

She's an Athletic Trainer for the women's team at the university she works at. They ended up losing in double overtime this past weekend. The seniors ended winning exactly 100 games in their career.
Three years ago, went to the Final Four - lost to eventual champion. Last year, lost by two in championship game (to the same team - which is in our conference - final four were all from our conference), lost this year in regional final to #1 team in country.
Great game, we hit a three with 11 seconds to tie in regulation, same girl hit a running leaner (finished with 24 points) with 7 seconds to tie game in first overtime, then the main opposing team player just took control in second OT - it was something to watch - the player finished with 37 points, 20 rebounds...Our main player had 25 rebounds.

Welcome to KRAI Radio's Weekly Chat with the Long Beach State 49ers head men's basketball coach, Brian Logan. This is Herb Weaver. We'll soon take your calls. Big win against Riverside, thought you would eliminate a 27-point deficit?
LOGAN: Geez, Weav, we needed the entire clock to come back. Taking our first lead with 1.3 seconds left tends to make things tricky. We were very fortunate to get a win.
WEAVER: Put us in the game. You elected not to call a timeout, instead putting the pressure on your players. Were you fortunate with the result?
LOGAN: We run those situations at the last 30 minutes of every practice. Down one - 30 seconds to go. Up three - 15 seconds to go. Down seven - 1:00 to go. All sorts of situations. We need to win the close games to be successful. We have to steal some games. Putting our players through that every day teaches them what to do in those situations as its second nature.
I don't want to call a time out in those situations. I trust my team to make the correct reads out there. I don't want to give the other team time to make defensive adjustments.
Patterson did great. That was the first time in a game where we actaully had that situation. Patterson looked around for second, got his bearings and looked at the bench. If our assistant coach is waving a red flag, call a timeout; no flag, no timeout - you're on your own.
I told the assistant who had the flag "SIT ON IT", after we got it to one. This game was going to be lost or won on the players and their execution. They passed the test and I'm proud of them.
WEAVER: You've had problems with injuries. Are you worried that our depth would be a problem?
LOGAN: I was concerned, but our bench play has been big for us. Baker, House, even Gerard Smith, knew they were not going to get a lot of playing time. Yet it was important for them to step up when they did. They enjoy playing just as much as anyone else on our team, and they've earned the right to be on the court.
WEAVER: Long Beach has had a memorable week, cracking the Top 50 in RPI at 44th. How do you feel about that?
LOGAN: I want to win one game in the conference tourney. If we do that, we've accomplished our goal at the beginning of the year. With the start we've had, we have to amend our goals a bit. If we are thinking about the Big Dance, WE MUST WIN THE CONFERENCE TOURNAMENT. We will not be an at-large team, just see what they did to Utah State. The RPI does nothing for us, except tell us that we will not get an at-large berth. We have to earn it.
WEAVER: Does that say something about the Big West if you know already that you will not get an at-large berth?
LOGAN: No, that tells us about the Committee. This conference does need to get better - it will help all of us when talking nationally. The Committee, though, should take into account the situations each team is in. They did not do that with Utah State.
WEAVER: Tell me about the progress of Darag and Cooley, are they All-Conference candidates?
LOGAN: We have to do a lot more, and they have to do a lot more, to even start thinking about that. We have games to win and our team needs to get better in a number of areas for us to be successful. Brad and W have been key to our success. We look for them to have strong finishes to the year.
WEAVER: That's it from us here. Thanks, Brian, we'll see you here next week.

Thanks all, for everyone's great comments about my legacy - I've had a blast playing it. But something has bothered me for a long time, especially since the conference season started for me.
I'm winning - too much. LBSU is an average team, and I thought moving up to All-American would be the key. In the beginning it was, but now I'm winning too much for my taste.
I'm moving my team to roleplay, playing either my PG Patterson, SF Darag or PF Cooley. I've noted the sliders foosketballin, elprez and HotShot have brought to us. I'm really looking forward to it.
I don't care if I slide and lose a bunch, I want to make it as real as possible. And I'm looking forward to a losing second half of the season. As long as I find it real.
The Utah State and CSU-Northridge games were played last night, and that was the final games the old way. I'm roleplaying tonight.
Thanks for all your legacies and props - its been a a blast!

FULLERTON, CA (AP) - Brandon Cook's follow-up dunk as time expired in regulation pulled Fullerton State to a tie with LBSU, and the 49ers went 2-14 from the field in the overtime to fall short of the Titans, 77-67, in Big West Conference play Friday night.
Walter Cooley hit a turn-around jumper to give the 49ers (17-4, 10-3) a 60-56 lead with 41.6 seconds to play. Titans' guard Ronnie O'Brien hit a three with 22 seconds remaining to pull the Titans to one at 60-59.
Brad Darag took the inbounds pass and pulled away from his defender, but was fouled as he he went in for a layup, and the shot rimmed out. "That was the game," replied Head Coach Brian Logan. "He had a great move - they needed to foul and almost hit the shot. If he did, the game was pretty much done."
Darag hit one of two free throws with 11 seconds remaining before Cook's later heroics. Ryan Howel tried a desparation three with 3 seconds left, and Cook took the carom and stuffed it home. "Unbelievable," replied Logan. "We played good defense, but didn't block out."
It got worse for the 49ers, who only hit 2 of 14 shots in the OT, and Fullerton State (9-11, 6-6) opened the overtime on a 11-2 run, went 6 of 9 from the field and outscored the Beach 16-6 in the extra frame.
The 49ers shot 29.5% (13-44) from the field in the second half, while the Titans shot 57.5% (23-40). With the OT included, those percentages drop to 25.8% and the Titans rose to 59.1%.

Long Beach State University announced today that point guard Kenny Patterson will lose his starting job indefinitely after a poor three-week stretch. "He's played more minutes than he ever has," replied 49er Head Coach Brian Logan. "He might be just tired, because his work on the defensive end is becoming a liability fo rus."
Patterson has fouled out eight times this year, the most in the Big West Conference, and has the 5th most fouls in the country, leading the backcourt by a wide margin. His time on the bench puts even more pressure on a depleted position.
"Since we cut Alvin Watson (HS All-American), we've had a shortage at the point," said Logan. "With Patterson's troubles, we have put a tremendous amount of pressure on Thomas Baker to compete, especially after Patterson fouls out."
LBSU also announced that F Stephen House will miss the remaining three games with a separated shoulder. "He's going to miss some time," explained Logan. "Hopefully, he'll be ready to go by the (Big West Conference) tournament."

POMONA, CA (AP) - Long Beach State survived Big West basement-dweller Cal Poly 81-79 Thursday night. Brad Darag (23 points) hit a fadeaway basket with 7 seconds left to give the 49ers (19-6, 12-5) a good shot at the Big West Conference's regular season championship for the first time in 11 years.
Long Beach leads the confrence with a 12-5 mark. Utah State has already finished their regular season slate, finshing with a 12-6 record. UC-Irvine, currently at 11-6, plays CS-Northridge Saturday afternoon, and a win will run their conference record to 12-6.
An Irvine win and a Long Beach loss will give the Anteaters the crown via tiebreaker, while a loss by Irvine will guarantee a LSBU victory regardless of the LBSU's outcome with UC-Santa Barbara Saturday night, given LBSU's two victories over Utah State. A win by LBSU will give the Beach its championship regardless.
Let's go to the post-game news conference with 49er Head Coach Brian Logan.
Seth Schneider, Long Beach Post: Brian, you were fortunate to get out of here with a win tonight. Do you feel fate is on your side?
Logan: I think we were fortunate to get out with a win. We still have a long way to go before anything's official though.
Schneider: Are you all ready for the Conference Tourney at the Staples Center?
Logan: That would be a big fat no. We have one more game, with Santa Barbara. We have a couple of sets that we need to work on before the tounrnament. All in all, though, we have to work on everything for me to be comfortable.
Linda LaFontaine, KRAI: What has been the most surprising part of your team this year?
Logan: Defense, Linda. I sincerely thought we would have more problems there, but we've integrated the 2-3 zone, which they played here last year. We've weaved in more man-to-man throughout the year. I expect that to continue.
LaFontaine: Offensively, you seemed to click. What do you attribute that to?
Logan: Rebounding - we're the best offensive rebounding team in the country. We don't shoot all that well but we do enough to get the job done.
Schneider: A loss by Irvine on Saturday afternoon assures you the Big West Conference regular season championship, as well as the number one seed. Would you play your regulars if Irvine loses?
Logan: I don't really know. It will be Senior Night, and I want them to play well. We'll make that decision as a team.

BIG WEST CONFERENCE TOUNREY - QUARTERFINAL GAME #4
#1 Long Beach State University 49ers (20-6) against #8 Cal State-Northridge (13-15)
LOS ANGELES, CA (AP) - The Long Beach State University 49ers defeated the Cal State Northridge Matadors, 78-71, in the quarterfinal round of the Big West Conference Tournament at the Staples Center.
The 49ers (21-6) were led by Walter Cooley's 25 points and seven rebounds, but LBSU Head Coach Brian Logan was inspired by the unselfish play.
"We've put in some new sets that force assists and interior offense," said Logan, in his first year with the Beach. "With four players with 5 or more assists each, that means were passing the ball well."
Northridge, which finishes the season with a 13-16 record, got as close as 59-57, due to an 8-0 run with 9:46 remaining in the game. The 49ers responded with an 8-0 run of their own, with four points coming on successive dunks by senior center Gerard Smith.
"Our seniors started tonight, played great and will continue to start the rest of this year," said Logan, who faces 5th seed Fullerton State tomorrow. "They deserve to start the last game of their career. Plus, they all played damn good."
Seniors Thomas Baker, Stephen House, Gerard Smith and Thomas Jackson all started and played significant minutes for the 49ers. Baker had 5 points and six assists. "He played great and was an integral part of that 8-0 run to close them out," said Logan.
House finished with 6 points and 5 rebounds. Jackson recorded a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Smith finished with 14 points and 8 rebounds.
The Matadors were led by Charlie Giddens' 10 points.

BIG WEST CONFERENCE TOUNREY - SEMIFINAL GAME #2
#1 Long Beach State University 49ers (21-6) against #5 Fullerton State (14-13)
LOS ANGELES, CA (AP) - Long Beach State earned its 76-69 win Friday night against Fullerton State at the free throw line, but it took all they had to get it done.
LBSU (22-6) hit 19 of 23 free throws to Fullerton's 6 of 7, and the 49ers used a 12-1 run to change a 53-51 deficit to a 63-54 advantage with 1:21 remaining.
"Those two late threes (by Patterson and Lawrence) were huge," said head coach Brian Logan, "...it stopped them from building a larger lead, when they were down by 12 at half. If Fullerton ran away with a couple of more baskets - we probably wouldn't be talking like this."
Walter Cooley continued his fine play, scoring 28 and grabbing 8 rebounds. Gerard Smith also continued his fine play, finshing with 11 points and 11 rebounds. The 49ers ourtrebounded the Titans (14-14) by a 49-26 advantage.

BIG WEST CONFERENCE TOUNREY - CHAMPIONSHIP GAME
#1 Long Beach State University 49ers (22-6) against #2 Utah State (16-12)
LOS ANGELES, CA (AP) - There is no doubt that the upcoming Championship game between the Utah State Aggies and Long Beach State University 49ers is big for one reason - the one spot in the NCAA Tournament.
"There is no way we are going to get two teams from this conference into the Tournament. This conference needs to get better for us to compete on a national scale," said 49er head coach Brian Logan, surprising many with his openness.
"We don't play the top teams - they certainly don't want to face us. There is no gain for them," replied Logan. "We need to get better - top to bottom - to ensure we get two or three teams later down the road."
"I think Brian is a bit overdramatizing the situation," said Utah State head coach Bruce Demanby, who is making his third straight appearance in the final game, winning two. "That LBSU team is pretty solid, and if we win - they would be 4-1 against teams making the tournment."
Logan remains adamant. "We've lost to some teams that do not scare the country - nor respected. I hope that will change."
As for the game, there are two players to watch for. Darian Austin of Utah State has had two 15+ points/10+ rebound games. Walter Cooley is averaging 25.5 points and 7.5 rebounds in the tournament.
"We must control him (Austin)," said Logan, whose 49ers have stopped Austin in the two previous meetings between the teams, each resulting in LBSU victories. "By the same token, we must control the second and third scorers for this team as well."
"Cooley is a tough offensive player," replied Demanby. "It will be difficult to match up with him and their outside game. They have a pretty good punch going right now."

LOS ANGELES, CA (AP) - The Utah State Aggies overcame a 12-point deficit in the second half and defeated top-seeded Long Beach State, 79-71, in the Big West Conference Tournament Championship Game Saturday night.
The Aggies (17-12) got 24 points from Blair Foster and 19 points from Pete Sheridan. Utah State shot 75% from the field in the second half (25-33).
"We got some great looks," exclaimed Darian Auston, the Tounrment MVP, who finished with 10 points and 10 rebounds. "We're going to the Dance!"
A three-point basket by Brad Darag gave LBSU a 49-37 lead with 15:56 remaining. A 20-6 run by Utah State with 4:49 remaining in the game gave the Aggies its first lead since the early minutes of the first half. THe lead grew to 73-67 with 1:46 and the 49ers (22-7) could get no closer.
"We had our chance to put them away, but we seemed tentative in the middle part of the second half," said 49er Head Coach Brian Logan. "We seemed to be content with the lead, and that darned zone killed us."
The Aggies switched from their normal man-to-man to a 2-3 zone with 6:13 remaing, down 54-46. "It paid off," said Foster. "We were struggling defensively and the zone seemed to take them out of their rhythm."
"It was a good switch on their part," said a winded Brad Darag, who led the Beach with 20 points, 16 in the second half. The loss still gave LBSU its best record in 23 years.
"We're excited about the year brought," said Logan, "but I believe we should be in the tournament. We are 4-1 against automatic qualifying teams in the tournament and we're 37th in RPI. The players have earned the right."
The Committee will decide Sunday who's in and who's out of the Big Dance.

Didn't make the tournament.
1) Finished 37th in RPI (Southwest Missouri State finished 34th - top team NOT to make tourney)
2) Records of lower at-large bids
Texas Arlington (Southland) - 15-9
Utah (Mountain West) - 19-9
Tennessee (SEC) - 19-10, 8-8 in conference
3) Went 4-2 against tourney teams
Utah State 2-1
Pepperdine 0-1
CSU-Sacramento 1-0
Southern Utah 1-0
I kind of knew that I had no shot at an at-large bid. TX-Arlington surprised me though.
