Charleston, SC (AP)--- A new beginning for the basketball program at The Citadel has begun.
After the release of former basketball coach Pat Dennis over the summer, The Citadel AD hired Zack Litchfield has their new head ball coach.
When asked about the new hiring the Athletic Director had this to say, “I think that Coach Litchfield’s philosophies on the game and his coaching skills are what this team needs to get it to national prominence. I have faith that within a few years our program will rival any that wishes to play us.”
We also got a hold of Coach Litchfield for comment on his hiring at The Citadel who went 8-20 during the regular season in ’02-‘03. “ I am glad that I will get a chance to build this program up and lead it to where it needs to be, the top” Coach Litchfield was formerly the coach at a small jr college, St Johns Community, in Florida. He led them to a couple Mid-Florida conference titles. Coach Litchfield also brought along his two assistants at St. Johns, Dominic Fisher and Anthony Taylor.
The new coach will get his first challenge at the Div-1 level when he leads his team against SW Missouri St at the Coach’s Classic on Nov 16. His line up this year features a few good 3pt shooters and is young at two FR, two SO, and one SR starter.
The starters are:
PG-Bernie Whitaker-SO (75)
SG-Shawan Price-SO (71) Best 3 ball shooter on the Team
PF-Cheyne Richardson-FR (73)

Thriller in Coach's Classic, Citadel Beats SW Missiouri St. 87-84
By: Rodger Allsburgh
Columbia, MO (AP)--- The first game of the 2003-2004 Coaches Classic ended with a bang!
With just seconds to play in the overtime period, Shawan Price (30pts, 8rbs), of The Citadel hit a clutch 3 pointer to put his team ahead by 3 in the final seconds as they pulled off an close one against SW Missouri St, 87-84.
The Bulldogs were down by 9 at the end off the second half when both Price and Cheyne Richardson collected 3 fouls a piece early. SW Missouri St was led in this first period by their PG T. Jay Freeman who had 10pts in the first half. The Bears shot an amazing 73% during the first half and held Citadel to only 19% shooting.
At the beginning of the first half the Bears got a 11-3 run and were ahead by 17, 47-30.
That’s when the Citadel Bulldogs shooter began to heat up. Price hit 3 three pointer in a row and Richie Cooper had a 4 point play to cut the SW Missouri lead to 4. After the hot streak though SW Missouri took control of the game and made the lead 15 after going on a 21-10 run that ended around the 3 minute mark.
The newly hired head coach at Citadel, Zack Litchfield, put in his 3 point shooters consisting mainly of Price and Cooper, who both lit up the score board during the last 3 minutes splitting 5 threes a piece and taking the lead when PG Whitaker hit a three with just 30 seconds left in regulation, but The Bears wernt out yet. With just 3.2 seconds left T. Jay Freeman hit a 2 pointer and got fouled to get one shot at the line witch he made tieing the game up at 71. Price tried a desparation three but fell well short as time expired and sent the game into an overtime period that see-sawed back and forth until Price hit the game winner with just 7 seconds to play.
After the game I caught up with Coach Litchfield to ask him his thoughts on the close game. “Well after the first half our boys were really down and the run they got at the beginning of the second didn’t help much but they hung tough. During those final minutes Shawan (Price) and Richie (Cooper) came through for us and led this team to victory. Im really proud of all the guys on the team and I wish SW Missouri luck through out the rest of the season”
The Citadel Bulldogs will face the TN-Martin Skyhawks in the Semi-Final of the Coaches Classic. Tip off will be at 5:45 Today.

Bulldogs Flyby Skyhawks, Win Easily 82-63
By: Rodger Allsburgh
Columbia, MO (AP)---- If it wasn’t for two huge and awesome comebacks mastered by their two best three ball shooters the Bulldogs of Citadel (2-0) would be winless.
The first 6 minutes for the ‘Dogs were just plain bad. They let the TN-Martin Skyhawks (1-1) get out to a 25-2 lead and it just looked like the skyhawks would just continue to pound on Citadel with there inside game. But after a time out just, after the half waypoint in the first half the three point shooting combo of Shawan Price (28pts/6rbs) and Richie Cooper (19pts/8rbs) began to heat up there was not stopping them. After Price hit four triples and Copper added 2 more the bulldogs had cut the lead down to five. The skyhwaks just looked demoralized as the Bulldogs began to run away with it when Clifford Sparrow (12pts/2rbs/9ast) added two threes of his own and Bernie Whitaker (8pts) hit a couple of twos the Skyhawks watched helplessly as there 23 point lead vanished and became a 7 point deficit.
Halftime Score: Citadel 32-TN-Martin 25
After the break the Bulldogs continued to shoot the lights out with there stars Price, Cooper and Sparrow who got them off on a 16-0 run to start the half and enlarge there lead to
48-25. Once the Dogs had a lead this large, Coach Litchfield pulled out his starters and gave his bench some playtime. Even with this merciful move the ‘Dogs continued to sore points through Greg Mills and Oumar Matthews. Towards the end of the second half, though the skyhwaks made an attempt at a comeback but just could not out score the viscous Citadel offense.
When talking with the coach of Citadel, Zack Litchfield, about the beating he put on TN-Martin he had this to say, “The kids just played a spectacular game. Again, Shawan led this club with his 3-point ability and tough defense. Mr. Cooper also did a great job from outside the arc to complement Shawan. Also in that second half our bench played great and I was glad to be able to get them in for some playing time.”
When I had written this article the game between the Richmond Spiders and New Hampshire Wildcats had not been played. The Championship game will have the winner of Richmond/New Hampshire and The Citadel. Tip-off is at 8:00 CST on ESPN+.
Final Score: The Citadel 82-TN-Martin 63

Heartbreak in the Heartland, Citadel drops shootout 78-76
By:Rodger Allsburgh
Columbia, MO (AP)---- Another comeback was just not possible for the Bulldogs during the week. Citadel (2-1) was mounting a comeback in the final minute but just ran out of time as they dropped their first game of the season to Richmond (3-0).
The first half of the game saw the lead teeter back and forth basket after basket. First Richmond then Citadel had the lead. Citadel’s leader so far this season and also in this game Shawan Price (18pts) had two quick fouls witch left the game on the shoulders of there other 3-point man Richie Cooper (15pts, 6stl). The game was tied with one minute in the first period when Richmond went on a 6-0 run that cost Citadel ground they would never regain in this fierce battle.
Halftime score: Richmond 42-Citadel 36
The Second half featured the return of star 3-man Price to the lineup. His addition to the lineup along with the power play off there starting center Bill Willis (11pts, 8rbs) could not make up the 6 points they lost to Richmond in the first stanza. Led by there PF Brian Wright (16pts) and helped by the rebounding prowess of Howard Lett (4pts, 11rbs) held off the attacking bulldogs.
Citadel was not to be cast out of this fight just yet. With less than a minute to play and down by a game high 11 points Price hit a deep three form about 22 feet and then got a steal an another 3 to cut the lead to 5 with just 30 ticks left on the clock. However, tonight was just not to be for the Dogs as Price fouled out on the inbound pass. Richmond took the ball down but it was stolen by Cooper who put a desperate three from half witch sank but wasn’t enough to tie the game as the buzzer sounded loudly in the ears of the fan and players of Citadel. *ERRRRRRR*
I got a chance to speak with Coach Litchfield of Citadel after the game and talk about this heart-wrenching loss. “ We just got outplayed tonight. Richmond is a good team and I wish them the best of luck through the rest of their season. Price and Cooper lead us again with their three point shooting but it just wasn’t enough to clinch the game, especially after we lost Shawan’s defensive presence to foul trouble.”
I also asked him what they were going to do to prepare for their next game @Jacksonville
“We are going to practice hard this week and watch some films of Jacksonville’s games to see what we need to do to stop them and not turn this loss into a losing streak. I believe that this team has potential to get to the big dance this year.”
Citadel’s next game is against the Jacksonville Dolphins (0-0) in Jacksonville on Sunday.
Tip off is at 2:30 pm EST and the game will be broadcast on radio stations WAPE in Jacksonville and WCIT in Charleston.
Final Score: Richmond 78- Citadel 76
** Personal Comment on the game--->> I thought i had tied it up at first cuz my TV is a little blurry round the edges but when i seen the score come up i was shocked. I actually had thought the Buzzer shot by Cooper tied the game up. I was stunned. Losing sucks man lol**

Charleston Daily Register- Citadel Sports Report
Coach Litchfield has designated a new starting line up for Sundays game in Jacksonville, FL. After the showing put on by Richie Cooper out in Columbia, the coach has decided to add him to the starting lineup as our Point Guard. This will move current PG Bernie Whitaker to SF and will move Daniel Gamble to sitting the bench.
I asked to coach why he made this move. “ Well I was hoping that by adding Mr. Cooper to the starting lineup that he would become a little more productive and we would score a little more. But I am worried that this move will make us to small and we wont get the rebounds we need to get some second chance shots. I guess we will just see how it turns out on Sunday when we play Jacksonville.”
Our beloved Bulldogs’ next game is in Jacksonville this coming up Sunday. It will be broadcast on radio station WCIT 89.9 Home of Citadel sports.

Citadel not rattled by loss, Tear up 'Fins 104-48
By: Paul Garners
Jacksonville, FL (AP)---- After a close loss to Richmond just under a week ago, the Bulldogs of Citadel (3-1) took out their anger against the helpless Jacksonville Dolphins (0-1). Amazing shooting and killer defense from their stars Price and Cooper, just dominated Jacksonville in a game that was never close.
The first half in Jacksonville showed a Citadel team no one has seen this year. They had a 6-0 run to start the game and then another 16-9 run towards the middle of the first period of play.
Both streaks were orchestrated by the shooting duo of Price and Cooper. Moreover, they were not the only ones scoring on a horrid Dolphin defense as the team shot an amazing 61% in the first half.
The unselfish play of Richie Cooper and Cheyne Richardson also helped in this easy first period, as they ended on a 17-3 run to close it out.
Halftime Score: Citadel 51- Jacksonville 28
The second stanza was even worse for the lowly Dolphins as they continued to get beat by whomever Citadel coach, Zack Litchfield, put on the floor. In the second half the 'Fins were battered by the Bulldogs bench by allowing 34 of the bench’s 57 points in that game. At one point Citadel was on a 32-3 run which iced the cake for the Bulldogs to win their third game of the season in a blowout.
The Bulldogs had a total of six people in double figures and C Bill Willis had a double double with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Shawan Price had a game high 17 points as he only played in 12 minutes of this blowout. Also leading the team in scoring was JR Oumar Matthews with 13 and Clifford Sparrow with 13 as well. The Dolphins’ leading scorer was Alvin Carr with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
I asked Coach Litchfield what he thought of his bench performance in this huge blowout.
“The whole team played great but the performance of players like Oumar (Matthews) and Clifford (Sparrow) and the rest of the bench really won this game for us. I am very pleased that I was able to play the whole team because all of them are great players. I was also relieved that our boys didn’t get down after that tough loss to Richmond. I’m very proud of all of them.”
Final Score: Citadel 104- Jacksonville 48
The next game for Citadel will be an early conference match up at home against Appalachian St. Tip-off is set for 8:00 PM on December 1. The game will be broadcast locally on channel 57 in Charleston.

I've lost a game like that on ESPN NBA when I played the Kings. Up by two with less than 5 seconds left and Mike Bibby launched one from his free throw line to beat me by one
I imagine the euphoria if you thought you'd tied it on one of those and then the feeling when it didn't count
Man, that would bite...................

Charleston Daily Register- Citadel Sports Report
This week’s game is the Bulldogs first against a conference opponent. Appalachian St. will be entering the hostile grounds of McAlister Field House. The Mountaineers 0-2 this season has not been looking very good whereas the pride of Charleston has gone 3-1 this season including a 104-48 smashing of Jacksonville.
McAlister Field House has only sold out three times since its renovation in 1989. (Duke-1989, South Carolina-1997, Charleston-1999). The Stadium is expected to sell out for this year’s opener and for Coach Litchfield’s first game at McAlister.
Tomorrow is also fan appreciation night all the fans get free Citadel T-Shirts and the first 1,000 get free Citadel Posters with pictures of this year’s team and this years Schedule.
Tip-off is at 8:00 tomorrow and the doors will open at 7:00 to see player warm ups.

Bulldogs march over Mountaineers, 95-64
By: R.P Clover
Charleston Daily Register- Citadel Sports Report
The Bulldogs were just unstoppable from the floor last night as they scored a total of 95 points on their way to another blowout win. Vs. the Appalachian St. Mountaineers.
Led by the 3-point shot of Richie Cooper who had a career high 32 pts and the excellent defense of Shawan Price who also had a career high 15 stl. The full court pressure defense of Coach Litchfield and his Citadel team just dominated the Mountaineers all night long.
The first half featured an amazing demonstration on how to shoot the trey ball by Cooper who hit 6 of 11 from behind the arc. School wasn’t out just yet, as Price gave the Mountaineers a lesson in how to play defense as he had 12 of his 15 steals in the first half. At the break, the Bulldogs had a 55-30 lead over the visiting Mountaineers.
The second period featured the unbeatable bench play of the Bulldogs as the bench led by Oumar Matthews put together 31 points in the victory. The game showed the depth of this Bulldog team, a depth that could get them to the big dance this year.
I spoke with Richie Cooper and asked him his thoughts on his career night. “ The basket just looked huge to me, I didn’t think I could miss. I was just feeling it tonight, but I can’t take all the credit for myself. The defense by Shawan (Price) helped me get the ball. The whole team played great, I am just glad I’m here to help them win.”
The Bulldogs will get just over a week to prepare for their next match up against Drake on December 9. The bulldogs will be traveling there before coming back home for four more home games. Tip-off for the game is at 2:30 PM.

Citadel takes bite out of opposing Bulldogs, Win 100-72
By:R.P Clover
Des Moines, IA (CDR)---- A close game in the first half became a blowout in the second as the Citadel Bulldogs out shot the Drake Bulldogs 55% to 43% during the game.
Led by starting center Bill Willis who had a season high 17pts and Cheyne Richardson who also had 17 points in a game that Citadel was losing at one point 28-34. The fist half saw star SG Shawan Price go 0 for 9 and PG Richie Cooper shoot a dismal 3 for 8 in the first half. The defense that had become a mainstay in Bulldog basketball this year was missing just a game after Price got a career high 15 steals. If not for the pure domination by Willis in the paint, this game might have become a blowout in the other direction.
Halftime Score: Citadel 42-Drake 39
A scoring run of 13-0 at the beginning of the second half is what secured the victory for Citadel now 5-1. Price continued to be ice cold from the field as he eventually went 1 for 16 from the field and 2 for 6 from the line. The bench again came through in this game for Citadel as they racked up another 46 points this season. The domination of the paint by the Bulldogs who had 76 of their 100 points form inside and an extravagant 40 rebounds throughout the game just demoralized Drake. A run of 16-2 at the end capped a game that at one point was close.
Final Score: Citadel 100- Drake 72
I was unable to get a comment on yesterday’s game from Coach Litchfield or any of his players but I was able to talk to the coach of Drake, Tom Davis.
http://www.drakebulldogs.org/mensbasketball/images/Davis_Tom.jpg
“ They (Citadel) came in here and gave us a beating. The center for their team was just a monster inside the paint. The only plus side for us in the game was that we were able to stop the hot shooters on their team. They have a wonderful all around game and their bench is almost as good as the starting 5. I hope they know what size dancing shoes their players wear ‘cuz they will be dancing this year.”
The Bulldogs of Citadel will now travel back home to Charleston to play visiting Portland St on the 19th and Georgetown on the 22nd. Tip-off for the Portland St. game is set for 7:30 and tickets are still available for both games.

Bulldogs take bite out of Big East, Thrash Hoyas by 15
By: R.P Clover
Charleston, SC (AP)---- A big time game against a big time opponent ended happily for the Bulldogs of Citadel. Led by thier big man, Bill Willis
(21pts-6rbs)and SG Shawan Price(12pts-6rbs-5ast-5stl), the dogs rolled over thier foes at home.
In a first half that featured an amazing 25-8 run in the middle of the half and another display of the now vaunted press run by Coach L and his Bulldogs, Citadel swept by the opposing Hoyas and left them stunned as Cooper,Price, and Willis combined for 40 of Citadel's 52 points. Also 42 of the 52 first half points came from inside the painted portion of the court.
Halftime Score: Citadel 52- Georgetown 30
Turnovers played a crucial role in the second half which featured Citadel's amazing depth as Georgetown turned over the ball 24 time compared to only 3 for the Bulldogs. Bench play led by Oumar Matthews (7pts) scored 30 of Citadel's eventual 92 points. Only the play of Georgetown's Jermaine Eaton (18pts-14rbs) and Ramod George (19pts) keept the Hoyas close. The domination of the inside by the 'Dogs was just to much for the Hoyas to overcome as Citadel had an unstopable 70 points at the final from inside.
Final Score: Citadel 92- Georgetown 77
I spoke with Coach Litchfield after the win over a big name opponent. " I am just glad that we could get Georgeton to come here and play us. The fact that we won the game the way we did make it even better. This win shows the this program is ready for the next level and i think validates us as a team to watch out for."
The Bulldogs stay at home for their next game against High Point.

Shocked Bulldogs Score 62 in Second Half, Demolish High Point
By: R. P Clover
Charleston Daily Register-Citadel Sports Report
After a shocking first half of play the bulldogs, led by the 3-point shot of Shawan Price and Richie Cooper, blew out High Point.
During the first half Citadel shot only 38% from the field while High Point shot a killer 64% from the floor. Price the teams leading scorer for the year hit only four shots in the first half but all were from behind the arc. Terrific defensive pressure from Citadel still couldnt stop a high powered High Point offense.
Halftime Score: High Point 42-Citadel 39
Coach Litchfield and his staff must have sent a message to thier team because they came out and just dominated the visiting team from High Point during the second half. Starting with a 25-7 run that started with 2 trifectas from Cooper and gave the Dogs their first lead of the game 64-49. This run just cut the High Point's players' legs right out from under them. Two more runs of 22-7 and 15-4 finished off the High Point team that only scored 18 points in the second period.
The Bench play again helped the Bulldogs with 38 points and the inside game was excelent led by Bill Willis who had 18 pts and 11 rbs.
Final Score: Citadel 101- High Point 60
The next game against Army will be televised on channel 57 in Charleston.
Tip-Off is set for 9:00pm. I would also like to wish a Happy New Year to all of You who are Citadel Bulldog fans.

Bulldogs protect "The Pound", Win again at home
By: R.P Clover
Charleston Daily Register- Citadel Sports Report---
A slow paced first half became a high scoring second as Citadel (10-1) rolled over the Black Knights of Army (2-10). Army led by their SF Rodger Valentine who had 16 points in the first half didn’t let the Bulldogs get a lead until 3:02 left in the first half. Shawan Price who hit the three to get the lead also started a 21-2 run to end the first half with the Bulldogs on top.
Kept in the game early by the inside play of Bill Willis who had 17pts and 4 rbs and the outside shooting of Price who went 3/7 from behind the arc and 4/9 from the field, during the first period.
Halftime Score: Citadel 43- Army 30
Another big run to start the second half put the game out of reach for army as they fell to an insurmountable lead down by 25. The great play inside by Citadel who had 78 points form the paint and cleaned the glass for 43 rebounds during the game. Army was hampered by the fact that they turned the basketball over 32 times compared to Citadel’s two. Citadel also shot 60% during the game in route to their sixth game of 90 points or more this season.
Citadel posted four players in double figures (Richardson 10pts;Cooper 17pts;Price 16pts-8stl;Willis 19pts-8rbs) and Mills who was one point shy with nine. Army also had two players who had double-digit scoring nights (Rodger Valentine 24pts; Kenneth Madison 13pts-10ast) and Karl Swift who had an awesome night on the boards with 15 rbs.
Final Score: Citadel 98- Army 65
After the game, I had a chance to speak with Coach Litchfield about tonight’s performance and their sixth 90+ point games. “We started out slow not getting our first lead until the 3 minute mark but when they went cold we got hot and got that great run to get some momentum going into the half. Bill and Richie both played great during the game and the great defense of Shawan really helped us keep the lead that we got at half. Number 13 for Army was a real challenge for us to guard but we were able to keep his shooting under control in the second part of the game. I am really happy with the performance of our offense this year and I am glad that we are able to score almost at will. I think our next game against NY Catholic will be interesting because they can score almost whenever they want.” (93.6 PPG for NYCA).
Tonight’s visit to Queens to play NY Catholic Academy will start at 8:00pm. Tonights Game will be televised on ESPN 2. The nation’s 6th leading scorer James Schmidt who averages 22.3 ppg will lead NYCA against Shawan Price and Richie Cooper and the Citadel Bulldogs. This trip to NY will be the first in a road trip that also takes the ‘Dogs to conference opponents Davidson and Ga. Southern.

Penguins Put on Ice by Bulldogs, Lose by 15
By: Quentin Bradley
Queens, NY (AP)---- Yesterday the Bulldogs proved that to have a good offense you have to have a good defense. The stingy defensive play of Shawan Price and the rest of the Bulldog squad effectively shut down the high-powered offensive attack of NY Catholic.
The Bulldogs tenacious defense led to a whopping 41 Penguin turnovers and led to a huge win over a quality opponent. Turnovers were the key in this match up as the Penguins turned it over 36 more time than the visiting Bulldogs. In addition, a great shooting from the field by Citadel led to their seventh 90+ point game of the season. (66% CIT- 54%NYCA) The defense of Citadel held James Schmidt to 10 points in the first half. Great play from the entire team was seen as 10 of 12 Bulldog players had scored. Only the dominant force of the 7’6” Errick Hill kept NYCA in the game (12pts, 9rbs, 4blk).
Halftime Score: Citadel 43-NY Catholic 38
The defensive attack of the first half carried over into the second half as Citadel had four consecutive steals that resulted in 11 points and helped to demoralize the home town Penguins even more. Amazing shooting from behind the arc by Cooper in the second half (4/6 3pt-20pts-8ast) helped Citadel extend its already decent lead. The 15-3 run at the start of the game was just too much for the Penguins to overcome. Another exemplary showing of depth by the Bulldogs, now 10-1, helped propel them to the victory. The scoring attack of Schmidt was held in check in the second half as the ‘Dogs only allowed him 8 points. The 18 points scored by R.J Adams of NYCA helped compensate for the lack of offense by Schmidt.
Final Score: Citadel 91- NY Catholic 76
The Bulldogs next game is their second conference game and second in a 3-game road stretch. They travel to Davidson and will try to keep their conference record intact. NY Catholic, now 8-2 will stay at home to face Central Connecticut. Tip-off for the Citadel-Davidson game is set for 9:00pm on January 6. The NY Catholic Penguins will tip-off against the Central Connecticut Blue Devils around 6:30pm at St. Peter Court on the NYCA campus. The next televised game for the Bulldogs is on January 26th VS Las Angeles Christian on ESPN+.
