The injury-riddled Philadelphia Flyers lost another key player Thursday when defenseman Vladimir Malakhov suffered a fractured jaw during a 3-2 loss to the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Acquired from the New York Rangers on March 8, Malakhov was injured when he deflected a point shot that rose off his stick and struck him in the face late in the third period. The 6-5 Russian was helped to the locker room, leaving behind a puddle of blood.

A metal plate will be inserted Friday, when a return date will be determined.

Malakhov joins fellow defenseman Eric Desjardins, centers Keith Primeau and Jeremy Roenick and right wing Radovan Somik on the sidelines. The Flyers entered Thursday's contest with 217 man-games lost to injury.

In five games with Philadelphia, Malakhov has one assist and two penalty minutes. He has three goals and 16 assists in 61 contests this season.

Sami Kapanen will be playing defense for him...Interesting move by Hitch. Sami hasn't played D since Junior, although he did play it on the PP and four on four situations when he was in Caroina.

I read an article and he seemed pretty happy to be on the point. He felt he was more productive on D than he had been all season playing forward!

Interesting stuff!
