New York Rangers captain Mark Messier will be latest player to face NHL disciplinarian Colin Campbell after the veteran centre speared Penguins defenceman Martin Strbak with his stick in their Sunday afternoon game in Pittsburgh.
With the Rangers trailing 2-1 and on the power play, Messier speared Penguins defenceman Martin Strbak in front of the Pittsburgh net at 6:13 of the second period. Strbak remained down on the ice for some time, but did not leave the game.
Messier, given an automatic game misconduct and ejected, cannot return to the New York lineup until a hearing is held on the penalty, according to league policy.
The second-leading scorer in NHL history, Messier has 17 goals, 42 points and 47 penalty minutes in 75 games this his 25th season.
The spear is just one more incident for Campbell to review in what has been a busy weekend for the league. The NHL has already scheduled a disicplinary hearing for Monday for Toronto Maple Leafs forward Wade Belak, who struck Colorado's Ossi Vaananen with his stick Saturday night.
The league is also looking into the game-ending brawl between the Calgary Flames and Nashville Predators on Saturday.
