Youngstown State Names New Head Coach

Youngstown, Ohio (AP) - In hopes of reaching the next level, the Youngstown State Athletic Department has released coach Chris Stapleton and has hired Morgantown, West Virginia native Brad Congelio.

Congelio, a recent graduate from West Virginia University with a sports coaching degree, is a surprise hiring for the job as first sources indicated that Youngstown State was in the hurt for a more seasoned, vetran coach.

"Brad seemed to fit the job perfectly," says Tim Reynolds, the athletic director of Youngstown State. "He may not be much older than some of his players, but the kid has enthusiasm, which is going to be needed if we are to bring this team back to life."

Congelio seemed destined for high school glory, applying early for Brooke High School's, his alta mater, coach opening. Soon after, Youngstown State wiped it's slate clean and annouced the opening. And the rest, my friend, is history.

"Words cannot describe how honored I am," Congelio annouced to Youngstown State's student body at a recent pep assembly. "I cannot gaurentee instant glory, but I promise that you will see a team with a little extra bounce to it's step once the season gets going."

Congelio has yet to name any assistant coaches.

Youngstown, Oh. (AP) - Hours after moving into his new office, Youngtown State's new head coach, Brad Congelio, as annouced his assitant coaches for the 2004 season.

Karl Goodson, from Milford, CT. will be filling the shows as Congelio's go to man.

"Karl," Congelio said, "is a good offensive minded coach. I expect him to take a big part in the training and growth of our players."

Also hired is De'Angel O'Bennett.

"De'Angel," often referred to as Angel by Congelio, "is a great teacher on the court. He and Karl are going to make quite a team. Angel is also a great tactician with a very solid court sense. He is also a solid defensive coach and can really get recruits into the shape they need to be in for our fast paced, break out type game.

Congelio Annouces Starters

Youngstown, Oh. (AP) - As the anticipation for the season grows, Coach Brad Congelio has finally released this year's startes.

Darell Austion - 5'11'' 170 FR PG
Tom Cooper - 6'3'' 179 JR SG
Ron Evans - 6'6'' 215 SR SF
Ron Curry - 6'7'' 242 JR PF
Brian Taylor - 6'8'' 250 SR C

"I admit," Congelio told today's press conference, "that I'm concerned with our lack of height. No offense to Brian or Curry, and even Evans, but I liked to play the type of game where we can run the ball down the court, feed it into a 7'2'' monster and let him have fun with it. But, with God as my witness, we'll make this work somehow."

Hmmm, this is odd. I went to play the first game of my season. And everytime it went to the load screen, the game messed up. It kept on going on a loop through the ESPN logo, to the team match up, to the team logos...then back through them again. I simmed the game and tried the next one, and it worked fine.

So, sometime tomorrow I'll get on and write out what happened in my terrible, horrible, sickening loss to Toledo.

BTW, I have a job interview for the guys varsity b-ball coach at my old high school tomorrow. Wish me luck all. Haha.

Before I make the next post, I just wanna inform everybody that I use ElPrez's sliders. And, that I also play with 10 minute halves. I do 10 minutes because I have alot to do in life. Job hunting, being a good husband (and soon to be father! WOOT!), and everything else that goes in in everyday life. So, just keep that in mind when you see my scores may be a tad bit lower than all of yours.

Also, because of the glitch...I had to sim my first game...and I lost. So, I'm starting out my official legacy post with a 0-1 record. Okay, I'm going to do it this time...for real.

Youngstown States Gets Demolished

Youngstown, Oh. (AP) - A few days after a season opening loss, the Youngstown State Penguins got manhandled by the Toldeo Rockets.

The game opened up with a 12-0 run in favor of the Rockets. After a timeout, first year coach of the Penguins, Brad Congelio, seemed to get his team focused as they slowly chipped away at the score.

The Penguin's leading scorer, Austin with 19 points, pulled Youngstown State within one with a NBA three pointer with a nice pass from Cooper, but that would be as close as Youngstown State got in the 58-37 loss.

"We got dismantled," Coach Congelio said. "There is no other way to put it. We didn't execute and we didn't follow our game plan. It was obvious that Toldeo was much better prepared and a more seasoned team."

Yes, Toldeo did look like the more seasoned team, but the fact that the Penguins only shot 27.3% from the field didn't help to the cause either.

Congelio continued, "And our shooting was sickening. I know my kids can shoot better than that...I've seen it in practice. When they just horse around before and after practice, they hit shots from all over the court. But, put them in a game, and the pressure gets to them. We'll have to straighten this out."

There wasn't much good to be said about Youngstown's performace. The one highlight of the evening was the play of Taylor, pulling down 26 rebounds.

"I just seemed to be in the right spot at the right time....alot," Taylor said. "I'd rather have 1 rebound and a victory than twenty-some rebounds and a bad loss. This just hurts on the inside. We can play better than this."

Youngstown State gets back into action with Virginia Tech making a visit to Youngstown for a 7:30 showdown.

The Penguins Drop A Heartbreaker

Youngstown, Oh. (AP) - The Youngstown State Penguins threw everything and the kitchen sink at the Virginia Tech Hokies but could not come up on the winning side of the scoreboard.

Youngstown stayed true to it's shooting problems, only shooting 37% frin the field and going into halftime down by 28.

But, Coach Congelio must have said something to ignite a fire inside of Tom Cooper.

After the halftime break, Cooper started to drain threes from all over the court, scoring a team and career high, 34 points. Youngstown State continued to a 14-0 run, bringing them within 3 at 63-60 with under a minute to play.

With timing widing down and the Hokies in control of the ball, Tom Cooper, the unsung hero of the game, made a play for the ball, deflecting it to teamate Darell Austin. Cooper started to streak down court and recieved the pass from Austion with under five seconds to play. Cooper lined up the game tying three. The ball hit the back of the rim and bounced out as the buzzer sounded.

"Cooper played a hell of a game out there tonight," Coach Congelio said. "It is a shame that he was left standing with his head down at the end of the game instead of getting carried around on fans' shoulders."

Youngstown State showed some nice improvements though, especially in the passing game.

"We worked hard in practice setting our plays up better," Congelio said. "And it really showed. We were able to swing the ball around the perimeter, especially during the second half, and get some open looks. Now all we gotta do is be able to capitalize on those open looks. We are making small strides as a team."

The Penguins (0-3) make a return to the court at Army (1-1) this Monday, December 1st.

Great Dynasty and keep up the awesome work. Too bad you lost that close game, and hopefully you can pick up your first win, too. :D

It kept on going on a loop through the ESPN logo, to the team match up, to the team logos...then back through them again. I simmed the game and tried the next one, and it worked fine.

The same exact thing happened to me, except I won when I simmed, but still I lost all the stats for the game, and its really annoying. I hope it doesn't happen too often.
