I've just recently been following football closely, and I don't really understand what a player at a certain position has to do/what's his task is. This goes especially for the defense.
If someone could explain/help me...

Wow. That's going to be a mouthful. It really depends upong the defensive alignment, and whether you're running zone or man coverage.
That being said, I'll super-generalize this for you.
Defensive Line - Nose Guard, Tackle, Defensive End
Primary tasks are backfield penetration (get to the quarterback) and run containment. If getting to the QB fails and it's a pass play, get your arms in the air and try to bat down the pass, or if you're lucky, intercept it.
Cornerbacks
These are the two outermost defensive backs. I generally think of them as protectors of the flats out to about 20 yards downfield, beginning in the area with the defensive end's coverage ends, out to the sidelines. Primary task is pass defense in this zone, and to get in on run plays to the outside.
Linebackers
This is going to vary HUGELY depending on your defensive alignment, but the two general rules are run defenise 'in the box', and pass coverage over the middle of the field (again, super mega ultra over-simplification). Depending on the alignment, this could be from directly behind the defensive line all the way to 30 or 40 yards downfield.
Safeties
These are the two players deep in a defensive set. As the name suggests, they are the last line of defense before a touchdown is scored. You generally have two - Free Safety and Strong Safety. General rule is that the Free Safety goes where he feels he's needed ('free' to roam) and the Strong Safety aligns himself to the 'strong' side of the field, or rather the side that the offense loads with the most players. If they line up balanced, he'll start dead center of the field.
There you go. But again, you need to learn your defensive sets for that info to be truly useful.

It's the same in both... Well 95% anyway, I guess they're working on 100% for next year... we hope.

well that is basically what a safety does cause I play for my highschool and that is what a safety does is run to where he is needed unlike the strong safety, that person is to watch the ball for a run a watch the corners in case the off. is in twins then they wil man up

I was talking bout the real game, i'm from the netherlands, so it isn't all too obvious for me.
When u create a player, u can choose a position, but that name doesn't always match to those in the tutorials.
But i've been helped quite good, but if u got somethin' more to say, all info is welcome...
