LEGWAND, GIGUERE STAR AS FLYERS ROLL PAST LEAFS, 6-1

David Legwand got a hat trick, and JS Giguere made 50 saves as the Flyers beat Visiting Maple Leafs 6-1.

The bad news in this game is that Chuck Hayes susained a hip injury that may keep him out until the all-star break.

FLYERS AND ISLANDERS COMBINE FOR 12 GOALS

The Flyers were sloppy in the first 10 minutes of the game, giving up 2 easy goals. But they got those two back, with a one-timer blast by Legwand from the point, and a goal by Hossa which was preceeded by a pass through a wall by Sharp.

After they tied it up at 2, they weren't done. Defenseman Jiri Fischer came in in the center position on a rush Connolly moved to the Left Wing position. It was a cross-crease one-timer which put the Flyers up by one.

New York had a chance to tie it with the powerplay, but when a pass to the point was intercepted by Hossa, he broke away and was all alone for the Shortie.

But that would not stop the Islanders. They got 2 goals in the 2nd. This forced the Flyers to make a move, Giguere came out with a dreadful performance, giving up 4 goals on just 14 shots. Kovalchuk scored later that period, and Philadelphia went into the lockeroom up 5-4 after 2.

The Flyers seemed ready to go in the third. Kovalchuk got another goal, and Sharp gave it to Legwand for a tally. 7-4 was a lead the Flyers wouldn't give up, and Robert Esche seemed to be 'The Answer' for Philly, stopping all the shots he faced.

David Legwand got a breakaway and scored to get a hat trick for the 2nd game in a row. But he wasn't even the first star. Marian Hossa was, getting 2 goals and 4 assists. David Legwand is doing more than he's supposed to as a backup for the Injured Vincent Lecavalier.

The Flyers have now won 43 of 44, and tying the one where they didn't come out on top.

FLYERS SHOW TEAM EFFORT IN WIN OVER THRASHERS

Philadelphia had dawned the alternate jerseys for ESPN's Thursday Night Hockey. And why not put the Flyers on? They are on the longest unbeaten streak of all time, and have been on it since the season started. 44 games counting..

Both teams were playing well as soon as the puck had dropped. If you didn't have a calender, you might think it were a playoff game. Halfway through the opening period, Shawn McEachern somehow walked into the Flyers zone. it was a 2-1 with Jiri Fischer and Slava Kozlov to his right. Knowing that Jiri would most likely dive to stop the pass, he did something not amazing, but still, none of us had thought he would. He passed it behind Fischer, and Slava Kozlov beat Esche to give visiting Atlanta a 1-0 lead.

Less than 5 minutes later, a long pass from former Thrasher Ilja Kovalchuk to Marian Hossa tied it up at 1. The first period came to an end with most of the stats even.

The 2nd period looked just like the first, but this time it was Philadelphia who scored halfway through on a goal by Tkachuk with nearly no angle on the shot. But the pass by Guerin which went through 6 legs was the 'wow' thing about this goal. 2-1 Flyers after 2.

The third period came, and the Flyers were sufficating the Thrashers. It started to show when Nash took a Philly dump-in, skated to center, did a cross-body pass to rookie Zac Yalangi (who scored.) Continued with a Thrasher charging call, which lead to Jason Sharp scoring a powerplay goal. Then Atlanta gave up a turnover, Marleau broke and scored.

David Legwand, who had gotten hat tricks the last 2 games had yet to get on the board. He erased my last sentance when one of his shots snuck in at the 2:00 warning.

Esche made 36 saves on 37 shots, the Flyers had recorded 101 body checks, and had won the game 6-1.

The Flyers go to Edmonton in 2 days, and face the last team they beat for a cup. Edmonton is 23-13-6-2. The Flyers are now 44-0-1-0.

FLYERS BEAT OILERS 6-3 IN PHYSICAL MATCH

Kyle Mclaren was back for the Flyers, and they would need him against Edmonton. The scoring started when Esche gave up an easy rebound, and Ales Hemsky put in the PP goal. It continued when Jason Sharp turned it over to Berehowsky, for a PP goal and Oilers 2-0 lead in Edmonton.

Later in the first, there was a delayed penalty. Kovalchuk took it in, around the net, passed to 22-year old defenseman Randy Miller, who shot it. Salo made the save, but was down on the ice. Zac Yalangi took the rebound and put the Flyers on the board. Just 1 minute later Rick Nash scored to tie it up at 2. Then the presence of Kyle Mclaren was felt, everybody on the ice was taking and giving hits. about 30 total in the final 2 minutes of the first.

The hitting carried on into the 2nd. The Oilers were taking a lot of hits. It disrupted their play, and you could tell, because Bergeron put it in his own net! Kovalchuk got credit. And then Jay Bouwmeester looked faster than he was, and scored to put the Flyers up 4-2. It would stay that way until the third period.

Kovalchuk used some fancy footwork to get into and around the zone, then a backhand pass to Hossa, who scored to give Philadelphia a commanding 5-2 lead. The Flyers continued hitting Edmonton.

The Flyers aggresive game plan backfired for one point, when Dvorak was left wide open for a goal with just under four minutes remaining. With 1:26 left, Oilers figured "What the heck" and pulled Salo for the extra attacker. As soon as he went on the bench, Tkachuk had the puck, and an empty net in front of him. But he was genorous, and gave the puck to Patrick Marleau who put it in the net to wrap up the Flyers win.

Salo made 59 saves, but it wasn't good enough because Philadelphia recorded 65 shots. How physical was this game? 165 combined hits physical.

Ironically, Kyle Mclaren went back on the Injury/Reserve. He is day-to-day after hurting his neck.

FLYERS READY FOR SHOWDOWN VS FLORIDA

After a tough win against Edmonton, the Flyers will head to the Office Depot Center and take on friendly rival Florida Panthers.

Florida is 2nd overall (only worse than Philadelphia) with 59 points, and 25 wins. Luongo is a top netminder.

The game is about to begin, and Blackburn will get the nod for Philadelphia.

FLYERS MAKE PANTHERS LOOK SILLY IN BLOWOUT

It started when Legwand scored just 27 seconds in. Continues 10:00 later when Connolly scored unchallenged. Then with 1:28 left in the opening period, Legwand chalked up another.

The game was anticipated to be a great, close matchup. It was anything but that after 1. Kovalchuk blasted a one-timer in 2:34 into the next period. Out went Luongo, in came Hurme. Luongo totaled 16 saves on 20 shots, Hurme stopped 34 of 35. The one goal was the Panther defense's fault, when they didn't even touch Hossa. Flyers won 5-0

There was bad news, Legwand suffered an injury which stopped him from getting a hat trick, and the Flyers will have to be without him for 1-2 weeks.

Now the Flyers will go back home and take on the Penguins.

Robert Esche will be in goal for January 26th's (today's) afternoon game against the Islanders.

HAYES GOES DOWN, BUT FLYERS WIN AGAIN!

The last meeting between the Flyers and Islanders was a shootout, which Philadelphia won 8-4. But the Flyers have home ice in this match.

Scoring started when Tim Connolly intended to get it in the zone for a line change, he blasted it from center ice, it went off DiPietro's shoulder, and into the net. Exactly 8 minutes later, a Roenick-Tkachuk one timer off the faceoff resulted in a rebound, and goal for Tkachuk. The Islanders got on the board with :25 left in the first on a goal by Scatchard.

Jason Sharp, Mattias Weinhandl, Ilja Kovalchuk, and David Legand all scored in a 1:58 time span. The Flyers led now 5-2. We waited an agonizing 3:45 for the next goal, which was a power-play goal for Rotislav Klesla.

Marian Hossa put the "!" in the headlines with a goal to make it 7-2. He got another, as did Connolly. But both were denied of a hat trick.
Everything was going good for Philadelphia, until Chuck Hayes who had just healed from a hip injury went down in the final minute of play. You could tell this bothered the Flyers, because they let a late one in. Hayes will miss the All-Star game for the first time in his 6-season career.

Final Score is Flyers 9, Islanders 3

FISCHER'S MISTAKE IN OT ENDS STREAK

Yes, it has come to an end. Before we start talking about the streak, let's talk about the game.

Flyers once again dawned the alternate jerseys for ESPN's thursday night hockeyIt was a great match, goose eggs after one. Just about 5:00 into the second period, the Leafs gave Tim Connolly some room... It proved to be a bad idea. The Flyers would lead 1-0 until halfway through the 3rd period. Owan Nolan tied it up with a goal from point blank.

At this point, the Leafs had gotten the momentum of the game on their side, and the Flyers just wanted to kill off 5 minutes of OT. The Leafs won the faceoff, some passing lead to a Mogilny-Fischer 1 on 1. Fischer went for the hip check, Mogilny went around him... Esche had :00 to react, and the Flyers 54-game unbeaten streak ended.

The bad news kept on coming, Rick Nash called in with an injury early the next morning. The city of brotherly love turned into goth town, everyone was completly despressed. The last day of January did bring some good news. Some very good news. Ed Jovanovski felt ready to go, and he got the official word from the docs.

There is also the All-Star Game (and not to mention a skills competition the night before.) Flyer fans will take a step back and be hockey fans for about a week, as the All-Star Game is the only hockey activity from January 28th to February 10th.

EAST LOSES SKILLS COMPETITION, BUT WINS ALL-STAR GAME

The Skills Competition's 2 biggest occurences were Joe Thornton hitting a 104mph slapshot, and Peter Forsberg going 4-4 in the accuracy shooting.

The Eastern Conference All-Stars had 9 Flyers-Ilja Kovalchuk, Marian Hossa, Jason Sharp, Jay Bouweemester, Kyle Mclaren, Jiri Fischer, Rotislav Klesla, Jean-Sebastian Giguere, and Dan Blackburn.

Giguere once again won an award-the All-Star MVP. He stopped all 45 shots, including 7 on the breakaway. The East won it 3-0.

"I wanted to put in Blackburn for the third, but Giguere was having such a great game."-Eastern Conference Head Coach Ken Hitch****

Two of the goals were scored :41 into the second, and 1:07 into the second. The third came with 4:56 left in the third.

TRADE RUMORS SPARKED BY END OF UNBEATEN STREAK

The Flyers continue their season against the Bruins on monday. Somewhere along the lines of talking about the loss against Toronto, trade rumors sparked about Tim Connolly possibly being traded. Reporters came up with all kinds of different stories-Connolly for a defenseman, Connolly for scorer, Connolly for draft picks...

When asked about the rumors, the Flyers GM Bobby Clarke had nothing to say.

FLYERS PICK UP DAZE FROM CHICAGO

There was lots of activity by the Flyers on Sunday, the 8th of February 2009.

First, C Tim Connolly was traded to Chicago for LW Eric Daze and draft picks. Daze is currently tied for 4th in the NHL in goals.

With only 3 healthy centers, Jason Sharp made a big decesion, he's moving back up to offense, playing the center position.

The Chain Reaction continued, the Flyers only had Randy Miller and Eric Cairns for the 6th spot. With more budget open, they traded draft picks to Dallas for Alex Semenov. Semenov is a 6' 6" guy with an incredible slapshot.

With still more budget open, the Flyers re-accuired Matt Johnson in a trade for draft picks. The Flyers originally lost Johnson in the Pronger-Hossa trade.

The Flyers finished their day with the sigining of Free Agent Jody S****y

Philadelphia will stage a press conference today (2/9/09) at 3pm ET.

PRESS CONFERENCE-2/9/09

We've picked out a few sections of the press conference for you;

GM Bobby Clarke is asked why he made the trades
"Well, Tim was supposed to be out 2nd Line Center. However, he was not performing to the level he is meant to. Daze really stuck out. The other players were on playoff contending teams, who would not give those players up. The others we could've gotten cost too much.
When Sharp moved up to fill the empty center, we needed a defenseman. We saw Alex (Semenov) had intimidating size, and that great slapshot. He was also cheap. I picked up Matt (Johnson) and Jody (S****ey) because we don't have enough policeman for the nights we'd need them."

Jason Sharp talks about himself
"With a hole at center, I had to move up. It is my job as Team Leader. The Center is a position for an all-around player like me. Plus, we need more faceoff wins."

Daze talks about being a Flyer
"When I got the news, I thought it was a joke. I knew it could happen, because we (the Blackhawks) weren't doing good. And when a bad team got a good player, He is usually moved. There is no team I would want to go to more than the Flyers, so I am very excited to be here. I will do the best I can to make myself welcome in Philadelphia"

Ken Hitch**** is asked what he'll do with the lineup
"Well, I'm obviously just changing a few partners, and plugging in the holes. The only position changes will be either Daze or Gagne going to right-wing. Usually the right side is the better fit for a scorer, so I am leaning toward putting Daze at Right-Wing."

Matt Johnson gets the microphone
"It is good to be back here, I like being on the Flyers. Me and Jody were brought here to be policemen, and that is what we will do."

Fischer is asked how his mistake in OT ended the Flyers streak
"Robert (Esche) told me I was screening him, So I had to do something. I had no other choice but to go for the hit, if I dropped to the ice he (Mogilny) could have easily skated around me. Even if I hit the puck away, he would have gotten it back. It was partly my fault for missing the hit, but you have to give them (Toronto) credit, they made us look flat-footed on the play."

THREE FLYERS GET TRICKS AS BRUINS ARE SHUTDOWN

Jason Sharp, Ilja Kovalchuk, and newest Flyer Eric Daze scored hat tricks as Philadelphia blewout Boston 12-0. Daze scored the first 2 goals of the game, then Sharp caught the Bruins on a line change. It was 4-0 Flyers when Andrew Raycroft came in, and did a "good enough" job just giving up 2 goals.

Daze was looking for a hat trick when the third period started. But everyone's mind went on one thing, that happened just 49 seconds into the third period. Joe Thornton picked up the puck, and passed it to the point. Thornton then tried to make a U-Turn when Jay Bouweemester checked him into June. It was a perfect hit, but unfortunatly Joe Thornton won't be back until the Eastern Conference Finals (if the Bruins make it that far.)

The stunned Bruins played even sloppier after that, giving up 2 goals to Sharp for a trick. Then they let rookie Zac Yalangi get on the board with his 11th goal of the season.

The Thornton injury had 2 big effects 1-The Bruins weren't mentally sound 2-They missed the abilities of Joe.

Kovalchuk scored 2 for a trick, and then, finally, Eric Daze got his third. It would be the last goal of the night, as Robert Esche continued to stop the puck. He made 41 saves.

"I wanted to do something to make the fans like me, and I think I've made a good first impression"-Eric Daze

ZAC "ANGIE" YALANGI IS THRILLED TO BE HOME

We got permission from Ken Hitch**** to do an exclusive on rookie Zac Yalangi.

"My dad was a hockey fan his whole life, when the NHL gave Nashville an expansion team, it was the greatest moment of his life. He instantly became a die-hard Predators fan. He raised me as one too.

About a week before their first game, there was a tractor-pulling incident where he lost his right arm, and his vision. Life just wasn't the same after that. We stopped exercising, he lost all enthusiasum for anything, it was like he went away with his arm and eyes.

Then one night, the Preds lost by 5. He got really mad. He drank alot.. And forgot to take medication. He went to sleep that night, but never woke up...

After that, I spent all the free time I had practicing hockey. I hoped one day I would win a cup for him, and he'd wake up.

Now we're going to my home, I'll have a lot of support there. Me and my friends always went to their games, we bougt the cheap seats where you actually had to look around the flags to watch the games (it was all we could afford.) Every time we went I dreamed of one day I would playing there. (Of course, I dreamed as playing for Nashville, not against them.)

It will be a dream come true tonight, I just want to make my mom and dad happy."

YALANGI SCORES IN FLYERS BLOWOUT

Eric Daze scored his 41st, Ilja Kovalchuk got his 40th in the first period.

In the second, it was sloppy play with the man advantage for Nashville which led to two Hossa goals.

Jason Sharp continued the Flyer domination with his 37th goal of the season.

But the story all along had been Zac Yalangi fufilling his dream of playing in Nashville (his hometown.) He finally got his goal with just 4:12 left in the game.

Hossa finished the scoring with a goal in the final minute to give him a hat trick. Flyers win 7-0.

Eric Daze got injured, but the Flyers will be fine, because Marian Gaborik is now listed day-to-day.

The Flyers traded LW Jody S****y and D Eric Cairns to Detroit for D Derian Hatcher.

In roster moves that have no other teams in it, the Flyers got RW Marian Gaborik, LW Rick Nash, and D Jay Bouweemester off the injured list.

It was another big day for the Flyers front office. To put it all together, Philadelphia gave away Lecavalier, Tkachuk, Guerin, S****y, Cairns, two 1st round picks for Heatley, Stefan, Ragnarson, Hatcher and one 2nd round pick.

For the player status, Marian Gaborik replaces Georges Laraque, Rick Nash replaces Matt Johnson, and Jay Bouweemster replaces Alex Semenov.

PRESS CONFERENCE-2/17/09

Flyers GM Bobby Clarke talks
"You are obviously looking for an explanation...

We liked Vinny and his amazing abilities, he had great leadership and always came through. However, with 4 great centers there was no room for him. Right Wing was the only area where we weren't overloaded. We got rid of Tkachuk for the same reason as Vinny. We got Kovalchuk, Gagne, Nash and Daze. Guerin wasn't really doing much for us, plus he'd be extra. Georges Laraque is good enough to be a backup.

The trade for Hatcher was a result of the budget room."

Dany Heatley says first words as a Flyer
"This is great.. everyone dreams about playing for the Flyers, obviously because they get the cup every year.

Also, in Atlanta I was the team, everyone was counting on me. In Philadelphia I have not only 1, but 2 superstar right-wingers who will perform excellent when I'm having a bad game. It makes me feel relaxed. I also always have 2 extraordinary linemates. This should be fun."

Flyers Captain Jason Sharp gives us a piece of his mind.
"Vinny was great, but there would be a problem if we had 5 superstars, and only 4 spots for them.

I was the one who recommended Heatley to Bobby (Clarke.) He has a great future ahead of himself. I don't know how Hitch (Coach Ken Hitch****) is going to set up our lines, but if I'm on his line, I'm gonna do everything in my power to make him comfortable in Philadelphia."

FLYERS DOMINATE DEVILS IN NEW JERSEY WITH 9-0 WIN

It was a scoreless first period. The game looked like a great battle. But looks can be deceiving. The Flyers had some great passing which paid-off when Jason Sharp scored the first goal of the night. Then David Legwand made a beautiful turnaround pass to Dany Heatley, who scored his first as a Flyer. Ilja Kovalchuk scored his 300th career goal in the final minute of the second to give visiting Philadelphia a 3-0 lead going into the third period.

Jason Sharp scored just 19 seconds in to make it 4-0. 20 seconds later Marian Gaborik got his first goal coming off the long injury. Then 10 seconds after that, Jason Sharp scored his 3rd. All three goals were a result of the amazing speed of Jason Sharp and Marian Gaborik.

Newly aquired defensive weapon Derian Hatcher got a goal as well. Marian Hossa (one of the many Flyers big-time scorers) got his 42nd goal. And for the 2nd period in a row the Flyers scored in the final minute. This time it was Legwand on a PP goal with just .7 left.

Dan Blackburn made 43 saves in his 7th shutout of the season. The Flyers have not given up a goal since the Mogilny OT winner that ended the streak. Sharp stole the first star award with his 3 goals and 3 assists.

The daily 1-2 week injuries went to Gaborik and Klesla. Jay Bouweemester also is day-to-day. The Flyers will now head home to take on the struggling Washington Capitals.

RAGNARSSON TRADED FOR RADIVOJEVIC

"Chuck Hayes and Jay Bouweemester are back, which means we were overloaded with defenseman. We could use another forward, and rightwing was the place to go. We like Rad, he also fits into our budget."
-Flyers GM Bobby Clarke's statement

In a bit of irony, the Flyers play the Sharks tommorow night in San Jose. Radivojevic and Ragnarsson will be on the ice in their new uniforms. Coaches are hoping they remember what team that they're on.

For the Flyers, The addition of Radivojevic provides a sense of comfort for Ken Hitch****, knowing he'll always have players at every position. Only position where they don't have a lot of security is the Center.

Don't be surprised if Philadelphia trades a defenseman for a center some time soon. Actually, you should be surprised. Hayes, Jovanovski, Bouweemester, Fischer, Mclaren, Hatcher, Klesla Semenov, Miller. None of those names are names you want to ship off. The one who would most likely go is Hatcher due to his age. But he has done everything the Flyers have asked. So no defenseman should be going.

Once again, the Flyers next game is in San Jose. Ragnarsson and Radivojevic switch uniforms.

FLYERS ROUT SHARKS WITH HELP OF 12 POWERPLAYS

The score had been 0-0 after a period. How many times have the Flyers won big after a scoreless first period? A lot.

Marco Sturm scored the NHL's 2nd best 45th goal to put San Jose up 1-0 on home ice. Then the Sharks started their unintentional self-desctruct. They were down 2 men, and gave up a goal to Heatley (his 38th.) Then some more penalties led to Sharp scoring twice on two 2-Men advantages. Those were his 42nd and 43rd. Newest Flyer Branko Radivojevic gave himself a rebound, and wide open net to get on the board against former team.

In the third period, Ilja Kovalchuk put it away with his 44th. Then it was only fitting that the Flyers ended the scoring with a power-play goal. It was Jay Bouwmeester finishing it off.

Chuck Hayes reported yet another injury that will keep him out 1-2 weeks. Almost simutaniously, Rotislav Klesla stated he was ready to go.

SPEZZA SCORES AND FLYERS WIN 4-2

Jason Spezza started the scoring 1:30 into the second on a powerplay goal.

Jeffrey Fritsche continued it when he caught the Flyers on a line change, he was hooked. That resulted on a penalty shot, which he scored on.

Marian Gaborik knocked in a powerplay goal, but the worn out Flyers PP squad gave one up.

The first 5 goals were all scored on a Philadelphia powerplay. The last of those 5 was by Jason Sharp. He is tied for the NHL lead in goals with 47.

The most exciting play of the game put it away, Gagne had an incredible hit on Cleary. He took the puck all the way in and scored.

Flyers beat Coyotes 4-2 in Philadelphia.

SHARP GOES FOR RICHARD TROPHEY TONIGHT

The Philadelphia Flyers will face the Florida Panthers tonight. Jason Sharp has 56 goals. The league leader is Pavel Demitra, with 57. Sharp needs two goals to get his 3rd Maurice "Rocket" Richard trophey, which is given to the NHL Leader in goals.

The Panthers have been a challenging opponent for the past 2 seasons. They have really stepped up. Florida is 2nd in the east. They have nothing to gain or lose, but there is no doubt that they would love to prevent Jason Sharp from scoring those 2 goals.

The Panthers are a freindly rival to the Flyers, but if they stop Sharp tonight, freindly may turn bloody. Everyone picks Florida and Philadelphia in the Eastern Finals.

UPDATE

Sharp did not get the Richard trophey. He had an injury bothering him the entire game.

In the opening round, Philadelphia won the battle of Pennysylvania by sweeping the Penguins.

They got revenge against the Maple Leafs for ending their 54-game unbeaten streak in the regualar season by eliminating Toronto in the second round.

The Flyers have a 3-1 series lead on Florida, and look to win the Prince of Wales in game 5.

ROENICK SCORES IN OVERTIME TO WIN THRILLER

It's Close To Midnight And Something Evil's Lurking In The Dark
Under The Moonlight You See A Sight That Almost Stops Your Heart
You Try To Scream But Terror Takes The Sound Before You Make It
You Start To Freeze As Horror Looks You Right Between The Eyes,
You're Paralyzed..

'Cause it was a thriller game 5 in Philadelphia.

Like we said, if Florida stopped Jason Sharp from winning the Rocket Richard trophey, the Flyers-Panthers rivalry could go from freindly to bloody. And over this series, it has.

Right off the opening faceoff, players were trying to check people out of their skates. Some were nearly succesfull. There were 3 fights in the opening 5 minutes, and over 50 body hits. Players were going at it like gladiators.

In between all this, the only goal of the first period was scored by Jason Spezza 4:04 into the game.

In the second period two early goals put Florida on top. Then Bure gave them the 2 goal cuishin late in the second.

Flyer captain Jason Sharp scored 2:28 into the third to cut the deficit.
The third period was the greatest period of the year. Neither goaltender would give up a goal. Luogo stopped 61/65, and Giguere stopped 48/51.
With 15 seconds left there was a faceoff right outside the Flyers defensive zone. The Flyers won it, they worked it to Gaborik who walked in, shot and scored to tie it just 9.1 seconds away from the buzzer.

He then scored off the next faceoff but was .04 seconds late, he got beat by the buzzer.

Neither team wanted to lose. The Flyers were looking to go to the cup finals, and the Panthers wanted to live another day. The thriller was living on.

Both teams were tired due to no commercial break when Jeremy Roenick got a break... and scored.

"There's no better feeling than the one you get after a come from behind victory like that."-Jason Sharp

"Hitch nudged me to get out there, I couldn't let him down. I worked harder in those last 15 seconds than I ever had."-Marian Gaborik

"Everyone was tired, even me. But as a veteran, and one of the team leaders, I just had to step up. That's what drove me to score the goal."-Jeremy Roenick

AVALANCHE EMBARRASED IN GAME 1

The only way you would know it was a Stanley Cup Finals game is by reading the logo painted on the ice.

The Flyers were seemingly overwelming the Avs the first 5 minutes of the game. They scored 2. Then they took a 3-0 lead on Ilja Kovalchuk's PP one timer goal.

Colorado got on the board with a cheap goal 51 seconds after Philadelphia's third. But that wouldn't stop the Flyers, or the embarrassment. Jason Sharp scored a goal, and he said "That was easy."

Colorado was doing awful.

In the second period, Gaborik added to it. The score was 5-1 not even halfway through a Stanley Cup Final game. What made it 6-1 was a goalie misque by the Avalanche.

That forced us to put away our pens and paper... It was just too much.

FLYERS EASILY TAKE GAME 2

The Avalanche team needed to rebound from an embarrasing Game 1. They got on the board early, just 1:06 in. But just 18 seconds after that, Patrick Marleau tied it. Then Ilja Kovalchuk got a goal.

In the second period, the 2 goal lead came 1:17 in. This was Kovalchuk's second.

Later in that period, Giguere gave up a big rebound, which made it easy for Colorado to cut the deficit to 1. This put Jiggy on the bench. Out went Blackburn. Jiggy had only made 12 saves on 14 shots. Dan Blackburn came in and shut the Avs down, stopping all 25 shots he faced.

The only goal of the third was by Patrick Marleau, 4:56 into the final period.

This game was more boring than this report. Game 3 is in Philadelphia.

FLYERS TAKE COMMANDING 3-0 LEAD IN SERIES

The series has shifted to Philadelphia for Game 3. The Avalanche, after being embarresed for two games at the Pepsi Center needed an answer.

They thought they had gotten one with a powerplay goal. But they hadn't. Yalangi's picture-perfect pass set up Gagne's one-timer to tie it going into the locker room.

What Colorado's coach said in the first intermission did not effect their play. They gave up a goal to Heatley.

Knowing if they held on to this lead, they would need to win just 1 of the next 4 games, the Flyers would not back down.

Daze poked in a puck that Aebischer couldn't find. Gagne intercepted a puck and scored the touchdown. Marleau sealed the deal wth 2:37 left on the clock. He added #2 a minute later to give the Flyers a 6-1 win in game 3

Philadelphia is 1 win away from their 6th consecutive Stanley Cup.

PHILLY CHEESESTEAK...BREAKFAST OF CHAMPIONS

Game 4 is history...

In front of a roaring orange crush, the Flyers ran away with it in the 2nd period.

It had been a close game until Patrick Marleau blasted in a one-timer on the powerplay. Later on in the second, Jason Sharp made it 5-2.

The Avalanche had to give 350% in the final period, desperation would not be enough.

They did give 350%, and they were seemingly outplaying the Flyers. But then there was a brickwall in the Philadelphia net called Dan Blackburn. He stopped everything that was thrown at him. Time winded down. Now the Avs needed an explosion. Time ticked down under 7:00 The Flyers got the puck and worked it to their MVP of the playoffs, Patrick Marleau.

6-2

Explosion turned to Miricle for what Colorado needed. 4 goals in 6:24 against the Philadelphia Flyers.

Miricle would not come, Explosion would not come, single goal would not come. What did come was

"Thirty seconds left to go, passed up to Sharp. Sharp has it, shot in Sauve the save and he'll hang on.

It has been another remarkable season. The Flyers earned 152 points this season. They Scored nearly 400. They gave up just over 100. They had 3 solid goaltenders. Another record will be broken, it is the 6th consecutive year the Philadelphia Flyers will hoist hockey's holy grail.

Faceoff won by Colorado, Passed up, OH there's a nice hit, the Flyers take control in their own zone...10 SECONDS LEFT TO GO!

Ladies and Gentleman, The Philadelphia Flyers are going to win the Stanley Cup! The Flyers win the Stanley Cup! The Flyers win the Stanley Cup! The Philadelphia Flyers have won the Stanley Cup!!"

ROENICK ANNOUNCES RETIREMENT

http://www.philadelphiaflyers.com/images/players/ActionShots/Roenick_ActionShot.jpg

After 21 seasons, JR has left the building. He's hung up the skates. He's done every other phrase that means, He's retired.

Number 97 left the game as a champion.

Jeremy had three great seasons from 1991-1994. In the 91-92 season, he scored a career high 53 goals. The next 2 seasons he recorded 107 points (each,) with 61 assists in the 93-94 season.

"I've played the game for 21 years. I'm 40 years old, it was time. Leaving the game a champion is what I was sticking around for. I kissed the cup, that's enough for me.

Now I have time to spend with my wife and kids. I will certainly miss the game of hockey, I love it. But I can now spend all the time I want with my family."-Roenick

The Flyers had seen all they wanted from JS Giguere. He was superhuman in the net.

But

He was not the kind of guy who wanted to play 30 games a season. He was a starter-caliber goalie. The Flyers gave him what he deserved, a starting role. And what they got back wasn't that bad.

No press conference has been announced yet.

"He is just like Zac (Yalangi.) I can't tell if he's better, but we know he's bigger and younger. Like Zac, he is already spectacular, which means that he is overloaded with potential. He makes our future very bright." Clarke added

Marco Sturm scoring one of his 54 goals last season

Bobby Clarke kept making big moves, and made an offer to Wayne Thomas that he just couldn't resist.

Eric Daze, a first and second round draft pick for Marco Sturm was the offer. With this trade, Thomas loses nearly 50 goals. But he also cuts payroll, and aquires prospects/youth.

"We said right after we made the Daze trade at the deadline that we would get rid of him after this season. We all know that Eric was just having a great season, a career year. We knew Marco Sturm was just warming up."-Bobby Clarke

"That one game we played against the Sharks last season, we won 5-1... Sturm scored the only goal for them. Our defenseman kept coming to the bench saying 'Number 19 is tough to contain, we're having trouble.' I looked at tape from that night, and noticed he had incredible speed, and was a smart hockey player. I knew if we ever got him, it would be a huge addition"-Ken Hitch****.

SEASON SCHEDULE RELEASED TODAY

The Flyers will play Colorado in Colorado for the season opener. It will be a rematch of the Stanley Cup Finals.

Then the Flyers will head to St. Louis to take on despised Blues. The Philadelphia-St. Louis rivalry is bloodier than ever.

Since they only play each-other once a season, this game should be overloaded with s****s. The last match had 22 fights. That is twice the previous record.

We definitly have not seen the ugliest yet, because in the final minute of the last game, Jamal Mayers jumped Chuck Hayes.

That game will be a game of revenge.

FLYERS DOMINATE AVALANCHE IN "GAME 5"

http://hometown.aol.com/pureathlete16/images/phi-col.jpg
Selanne shoots it by Eric Brewer

For opening night, the Avalanche wore their third jerseys. The ones that say "Colorado" diagonally across the front. The maroon ones. They were hoping the jerseys gave them some luck.

Nobody knows if it were the jerseys, but what the Avalanche had that night was anything but luck, as they lost a 5th straight game against the Philadelphia Flyers.

Philadelphia was lead by David Legwand's hat trick, and the solid goaltending of Dan Blackburn.

http://hometown.aol.com/pureathlete16/images/hat%20trick2.jpg
The Lone Hat

Legwand scored the first Flyer goal of the season, and later on in the first he ended a good play by Philadelphia by shooting the puck into the back of the net. What he is best known for, his speed earned him a breakaway, which ended in his third goal. There was only 1 hat thrown. It was in Colorado, but still-you would expect more than 1 hat to come down.

http://hometown.aol.com/pureathlete16/images/blackburn1.jpg
Dan Blackburn stopped all 43 shots, earning the shutout

Dan Blackburn was the new starting goaltender due to the trading of Jean-Sebastian Giguere (better known as "Jiggy") to the New York Islanders for Rick DiPietro in the offseason.

Blackburn would not let the puck go by him, he was being the brickwall he was in the Cup Finals. The Flyers made several mistakes, but thanks to Dan Blackburn, nothing went in. He got the shutout.

Also scoring for the Flyers was Ilja Kovalchuk, Jason Sharp, Marian Hossa, and last year's Calder Trophey winner Zac Yalangi.

Kovalchuk scored 2. His first came off Jason Sharp's rebound, the 2nd (who would've guessed) on the breakaway.

The final score -Flyers 8, Avalanche 0

COLORADO LOOSES FOOTE FOR 2-4 MONTHS
http://coloradoavalanche.com/images/Gallery/Actionshots/ADAMFOOTE.jpg
Adam Foote

"First I got hit hard after a clear, and doc said I could play the rest of the game, but I might have to take a day or two off if I did.

At the time, we were still in the game. And I'd rather beat the Flyers once than play twice anyday. In the 2nd period my leg hurt when I did a hard stride. But I stayed in the game, because it didn't feel too bad.

But I should have left then, because Jason Sharp came in on the forecheck, and he hammered me into the boards, I fell on my knee, it was one of the worst feelings ever."-Adam Foote

Foote is one of the Avalanche' top players. He is a big key to success for them. Colorado will definitly miss this blue-liner.

In other injury news, Chuck Hayes is day-to-day with a bruised forearm.

ONLY 10 IN THIS ONE... FLYERS WIN

http://hometown.aol.com/pureathlete16/images/phi-stl%20fight.jpg
1 of the 10 fights

After 22 fights in the last game, one of which Jamal Mayers jumped Chuck Hayes, you would expect a lot more than 10 fights. However, the Flyers and Blues were satisfied with what they got. The Flyers more so, they won 9 of the fights.

Meanwhile, there was a game that was going on, and the Flyers won it 8-2.

After initially being dominated in the first period, only being down 2-0 though... Their 6 goal 2nd period was good enough for the W. Legwand was once again the first star of the game, being the only player who scored multiple goals.

KOVALCHUK OUT 2-4 MONTHS WITH BROKEN LEG

http://hometown.aol.com/pureathlete16/images/kovalchuk.jpg

The Flyers' best Left Winger went down in the 3rd period with a broken leg.
He will be this season's Marian Gaborik... Out 2-4 months due to an October injury.

Kovalchuk is a 100-point man, and the Flyers will miss his offensive numbers, as well as his defense. However, last season they went without Ed Jovanovski and Marian Gaborik. So this is nothing new for Philadelphia
