Coach James Announces Lineup

Coach Eric James of the Missouri Tigers has announced his intended starters for the 2004-2005 opening game against Southern Methodist Univeristy. Coach James was successful in his first year as the Tiger's coach, he led them to a 26-7 record and a trip to the sweet 16. "My goals for this season are simple, win the conference, and win the NCAA tournament." Said James. With expectations so high let's hope that the Tiger's are able to live up to them. Here is Missouri's probable starting lineup and a little bit about each player:

PG: Dan Stallworth- 6'1, 170 Ilbs, SO , Shawnee, KS
Dan is a Pure shooter who lacks some ball-handling skills. Despite this he is an excellent passer and should rack up plenty of assists.

SG: Aras Turner- 6'5, 210 Ilbs, SR , Champaign, IL
Turner is also a great outside shooter, he is also the quickest player on this gaurd filled Mizzou team. He is a solid defender, and will gaurd the other team's best player on most nights. In addition to all that this kid can jump. If you like exciting dunks Turner is one kid to keep your eye on.

SF: Chris Elliot- 6'8, 213 Ilbs, FR, Colombia, MO
Elliot is very young and inexperienced, but he will get plenty of playing time due to Mizzouri's lack of depth at the forward posistion. He is very smooth around the basket.

PF: Drew Spencer- 6'10, 261 Ilbs, SO, Franklyn, TH
Drew is by far the team's best post player, bost on offense and defense. Not only can he play in the post, but he can also step out and knock down the outside jumper. Look for this kid to have a breakout season.

C: Chris Bryant- 6'10, 245 Ilbs, SR, Romeoville, IL
Chris is on the floor for two reasons defense and rebounding. He struggles on the offensive end, but should pull down about 10 boards a game.

After jumping out to a 10-0 lead SMU seemingly had nothing left. The Mustangs jumped out to this surprising lead after a pair of 3 point field goals by their star point gaurd Daryl Dixon. Part of the Tiger's slow start was due to starting point guard Dan Stallworth picking up two fouls in the first two minutes. Missouri called a time out and whatever Coach James said seemed to wake up his players.

Led by senior Aras Turner (28 points) Missouri (1-0) went on a 14-2 run to take a lead it would never relinquish. The Tigers led by as many as 18 in the first half, but a late surge by the Mustangs (0-1) left them only 8 points back at the half. Both Turner and Drew Spencer had 14 points at the half.

Missouri came out running in the second half and jumped out to a 14 point lead within the first 2 minutes of the half. The Tiger's never looked back as they went on to the 111-89 win. 45 of the Tiger's 111 points were on fast breaks, and 88 were scored in the paint. They only shot 3-17 from three point land, but Spencer was a monster in the post, with 30 points.

When asked what he told his players during the timeout early in the first half, Coach James replied " I just told them that our next practice would be pure hell unless they picked it up. They responded and that's all that matters. I just hope that we can play like we did in the second half all the time. That's the way this team plays ball."

Players of the game:

Aras Turner: 28 pts, 13/22 fg, 2/9 3pt, 4 reb, 5 ast, 3 stl, 3blk, 0 TO

Drew Spencer: 30 pts, 79% fg, 8 reb, 3 ast

Missouri plays North Carolina A&M, 79-74 winners over UC Irvine, in the second round.

The Friars of North Carolina A&M (1-1) never held a lead against a very determined Missouri Tiger (2-0) team. The closest they got other than the start of the game was on a four point play with 12 minutes left in the first half. Missouri ended the first half on a 18-4 run and led 59-35. Aras Turner had 11 points, 8 assits and 4 rebounds at the half.

Turner is starting to emerge as the Tiger's star player. He has the ability to shoot on the perimeter and drive hard to the hoop. He also is a great defender.

The second half began and the Tiger's showed no signs of slowing down. Once again however, sophomore Dan Stallworth was plagued by foul trouble. Luckily, Missouri has one of the deepest backcourts in America. freshman Bill Gatling and senior Rasheed Soson played solid coming off the bench for the second straight game. Coach James said of his bench play "Those guys are great. They would be starters on a lot of the teams in this country, but they understand their role on this team, and are great team players. We need these guys if our season is going to be a successful one."

As for Stallworth this is what he had to say about his early season foul trouble, " I think I can be to aggressive defensivly. I reach in a lot to try and get a hand on the ball, and when I miss I get a foul called. It's not that big of a deal, I'll figure it out."

The Tiger's went on to a 96-77 victory.

Game Stats

Missouri: 48/82 58% FG, 4/16 25% 3's, 47(11) REB(OFF)

PLAYERS OF THE GAME

Aras Turner: 26 points, 13 assists, 6 rebounds

Drew Spencer: 19 points, 11 rebounds, 62% from the field

Chris Bryant: 13 points, 9 rebounds.

Turner Drops 51 on Lafayette

http://ak-sports.espn.go.com/f/1917/8668/6H/espn.go.com/i/ncaa/clubhouses/logos/142.gifMissouri (2-0) Vs. http://ak-sports.espn.go.com/f/1917/8668/6H/espn.go.com/i/ncaa/clubhouses/logos/322.gif Lafayette (1-1)

Aras Turner may not be human. The senior Shooting Gaurd scored a career high 51 points, and set a Missouri record, hitting 10, thats right 10, three point field goals. He had 21 points at the half to go along with 4 rebounds and 4 assissts. "I just felt it tonight. It's that simple, I thought every shot I took was going to go in." Turner told reporters after the game.

As for the actual game it was a blow out. Mizzou won 101-65. Lafayette never got closer than 12 in the second half. The first half was extremely sloppy, both teams combined for 24 turnovers. In addition to the extraordinary game by Turner, Chris Bryant broke out with a 22 point 12 rebound double-double.

When asked about Bryant's surprising scoring performance coach James said this, "To be honest we all kind of expected it. He had a fantastic week of practice, and I think that it translated on to the court tonight."

Lafayette was led by point guard Darius Cooper (24 points, 9 asssists), but his performance was not enough to slow down the Turner and the Tigers. Missouri faces thier first real test next week against St. Joe's.
